Required and tonight's talk is by Simoni Matarazzo he's a chartered civil structural engineer and works for for Arab and tonight he's going to talk about the new Dubai building code in particular any new requirements for structural design and also sustainability if you have any questions just feel free to type them into their q a box and we'll we'll Raise the questions which Simone at the end of the talk so I'll pass it over to you now Simoni you can start the presentation thank you yeah good evening everyone I hope you can hear me right can
you hear me yeah yes we can hear you okay very good I'll switch off my videos with uh so thanks to SRT first of all just to give me the opportunity to talk about to Bubble Nikos the the whole project and thanks you guys for joining us tonight So uh just to give you a quick introduction by myself uh my name is I'm [Music] came to Dubai in 2007 for three months the convent which became a 16 years uh stint um I joined I came here with Atkins as uh working on the Dubai Metro project
and then um start I did a few more from Metro project and switched to buildings and now we work with Arup since uh 2019. Um so the Bible decode was probably one of the most uh challenging for some aspect but also most rewarding project uh so you can see probably through the presentation uh it's very unique you know it's something that is not really another very common project for for us as a structure engineer so the to the public court was released actually on 2020 yes and is available on on the Internet is free you
can access Freely and then it's uh it was a commission to rupai the Dubai code building code committee it was mainly um as I'll show you later um based on uh Dubai was a branch by Missy Barn effectively um so just if before we start to talk about the diving liquid I just give you a few slides just to show so what the first question that we would ask is what is the code basically why is now Standard so we we Define with the code because basically uh the main requirement just to to assure the
safety of the people and also because as I can show you later internal hierarchy the code is probably the highest circuit and uh below the code that I like the the international standard and International International guidelines and it's got also a legal the bubble code is called illegal legal Authority itself So the the main challenge that we as you you're probably familiar with the structure design or civil design in Dubai before the Dubai building code was issued we had quite a lot of documents different sources different government departments coming in with different guidelines uh circular
and so on so there was a quite uh wide number each number of documents that every designer need to go through so one of the first objective was Probably was to define a single Unified source of information so a building code just one document that you can use as a starting point for your design then from there you can just dig into the different references and different guidelines that are referred into the the code the second the second also important aspect to us to optimize uh the cost but not just the cost itself but basically
to improve Their sustainability and aspect of the design itself which then will drive also the cost down and then also the easy to use the code was yeah it has to be very easy to use and that's why you will see that uh with the collaboration was with Arup with Bridges standard BSI so they can help they help us actually to to make the code easily accessible quite simple in in the format you know just enough to be too too complicated And convoluted so as I mentioned so there is the code is under a legislative
framework so it's got a legal power um and um the building code then it refers to as the hierarchy to other technical standards and the industry Guidance the same hierarchy is defined in the code itself so you will see that when you talk about uh We call about essential references the part of the code and then there's also guidelines which is not really the structure requirement so they don't really like a requirement in general so that they can use also to to support your design uh in terms of how did we did Hadoop work with
within the um it was not just a one I want to say here is that obviously the code was not developed by Arup poly it was mainly driven by the Dubai building called committee so within the Dubai committee we had the authorities like DCd trackies Dubai municipality RTA DDA and basically harup work in collaboration with British standard BSI and Gessler guess that they were looking after the architectural part and the narrow to be looking for the rest of the code and also it's like actors also as a project manager And then the process was not
just um a discussion with within uh the consultantsi and Authority but we also had several workshops with the stakeholders permitting authorities like service providers like Dua it is a lot developers we talk to people like Mr the Mark we try to gather all the different requirements different uh information requirement in general specifically from All different pasties within within Dubai we have several workshop and then basically we we try to to um get to this unified document that has been that he is accessible on the internet but the few things that you need to clarify is
that we didn't change anything in approval process to our process is is um it depends on on the authorities that you that you're working with We didn't change any content there was um already provided by the guideline the documents already available unless I mean there was something that was not required and then as I said the main objective basically was to Define this uh unique document with one style and to without any Gap or inconsistencies because the one the first task that we did actually was just to gather all the documents and Compare all different
documents one line by line distributed by this and across different um uh sections and just to make sure that there was no inconsistency and then we highlight the good content that could be part of the of the Dubai building code so that's why we actually we end up reviewing like almost 500 documents and then we funnel intellect 90 some some something like about 90 documents which then be Merged into one single document so there was quite a lot of stuff there was not it was really really available and uh the the authorities that is actually
a great job before we came on board to uh to to provide some uh sort of highlight or guidelines within the of what was to be supposed to be that the idea of the building code itself then the other aspect was also to have a Benchmarking study with other other codes so we did comparison with other code in Hong Kong Singapore Abu Dhabi or Euro code American code in general then we um we're basically trying to define the the content of the code and that was obviously agreed with the with the different stakeholder and authorities
and The the concept is like basically the building just a single system and then it needs to be designed and such so we need to have a unified approach also across the whole discipline now to avoid any miscoordination in general so what we end up then we agree to Define the we agree with when you supply it to Bar building committee to stand uh 10 different parts You will notice for example here there is no file Life Safety because then we we are already the UL UAE file Safety Code uh but obviously there is a
direct reference to it uh then there's the first part is the general pathway as a definition of the part hierarchy uh sorry definition of of the of the code and with the hierarchy how it how the code Works in relation with that International standard of other documents Um architecture accessibility then VT vertical Transportation building envelopes cladding and facade structure utilities Android environment is MEP security and Villas so in the following slides I'll just go through quickly to the to the different the main aspect of each part and then we'll concentrate on the structure because this
is a nice 30 talk so I don't want to take too much time on on talk about to architecture but it is Relevant just to to have a quicker understanding what other parts contain so if you look at path day is quite actually is quite important because it does Define what Dubai building code can be applied so the Dubai building code doesn't uh doesn't apply to infrastructure so if you're talking about Metro or Bridges you need to send it to the fire to the Earth you need to define the Sorry refer to the RTA guidelines
wiring structure uh whole linger structures temporary structures some stance scaffolding four marker false work and then at the Historical building of special structure where there's a kind of special learning condition uh so that's on the table here you see where the Dubai building code can be applied to um and also on this part is also as I Said it's it's a it's useful to understand how the bubbling code is uh uh is what's the relationship with other local and international regulation there is also possibility of the Republic to have alternative Solutions which are not um
which are not specified or described here in the code is it could be as you can see as we're going to see later could be quite interesting for like for example I want to talk about Concrete mix design there is opportunity to to propose different a more sustainable concrete mix design but obviously the the process is a is a bit uh can be a bit more uh longer because it needs to be go longer he if the process might not be applicable for for a live project you know because it might take more than the
project itself but it's also interesting to to know that there is a possibility to have to Present or to provide alternative Solutions so as I quickly through the other this to the the individual parts so we have part B is architecture there are some definition of the area uh definition also maximum uh height restrictions have been removed um parking provision are quite important they've been standardized there was quite quite a few discussion on that and the building height measurement also Been defined uh the accessibility accessibility with mainly referring to the Dubai Universal Design code you
might be familiar with um so it's not something is it the code the content here is quite um already some new content spots really to the Dubai qdc tudc vertical Transportation also was uh it was a requirement for a specific part uh there is uh what is relevant here there's a two design method one is Prescriptive using some predefined number of passengers the other one is this introduction of performance-based design or forward to transportation building envelope in the envelope here is a wood pretty with the uh there's quite um a few requirements uh in terms
of sustainability in terms of glazing requirements which are related to mainly to health effect which is the Sustainability regulation if you buy all right so we're coming to structure structures uh our topic so the first the first question when we start talking about structure was uh who is if you probably remember in Dubai before the bubbly code we were referring to mainly to ac705 into some ACI code so we there was a common agreement to upgrade you know to Abundant ac705 to more line with SC 716 which is actually now already superseded but okay 716
is really was a big step forward and the there is a bit of a discrepancies here because we're trying to resolve it to get also some U.S code and standards for the geotechnics but anyway there was initial debates but then it was agreed you know the soil properties uh soil properties So if you talk about vdash or volcano r2ka you can Define using pretty standard or you can Define use the American code but then the market and the local um yeah the local supply chain is all based on pretty standard and and the Euro code
so it was felt that you'll be appropriate just to keep it yes and then for geotechnics for soil properties so when you talk about them Concrete design itself you can just refer to the ACI code to American code General so the soil when you start talking about soil properties uh that we soil testing also so we get referred to DBS there was a bit of gray area I want to talk about liquefaction for example where there's a there's a bit of spaces seismic requirement which is uh American code se7 and then is related to The
soil properties so but it was kind of resolved by using proposing some recommending some method for liquefaction which is like so if it was well there was quite a clear cut between the two so we kept as it is uh the main thing is so here in term of loading requirement we so in terms of wind uh as you know we need to go from AC 705 to 716 there was a different uh loading factor and Different wind speed so we now have when we talk about strength design we can use a loading Factor one
rather than 1.6 as previously but we're referring to the speed is slightly increased but because we're referring also to 700 zero time period but overall when you compare to the previous wind requirements thing uh there you can see that the actual loading overall is decreased for serviceability we're talking about 30 years sorry 10 years of time period that the speed is 30 meter per second and so um the I was gonna say this agreement and the speed uh obviously on the wind speed was a long discussion but they were based on studies they were commissioned
by the client from municipality that were or the committee and they were reviewing internally by the authorities And then they were revealed intended by us through like uh our specialist uh we have some some some Specialists for wind Specialists there they um their work on their on the on their Hong Kong code and uh Australian code so they have experience in in code writing um so there was the agreement of these values based on their own third-party studies the same for seismic seismic Similar approach uh so there was a stainless studies were commissioned to review
it by authorities reviewed by us and then it was a general agreement on the on the values and yeah the main changes like we're abandoning the UBC which is completely superseded and we are now just referring to ac716 and overall as you can you'll probably see uh there is a bit of reduction in terms of of light load Uh um it's um it's felt that it was actually more appropriate than the nearest before other internal structures and other important things to to highlight and then after the end at the end of these slides we can
go through I can go through that the code quickly like page by Page just to highlight the the things that we need to be aware of so here quickly we say that uh The concrete now desired requirement is aligned with acr31819 so the minimum reinforcement might reduce there are some definition also on the robustness against this proportional collapse which is referring to ac716 which also referring to to the UFC American uh uh Armed Force requirement for disproportional clocks before there was like some reference to the BS so it was A bit difficult to incorporate this
requirement when you're talking about when you're using AC Co ACI also interesting is that we we managed to agree with the with authority that uh temporary structure can now be optimized it can be designed as part of permanent system so to react to in theory we can have a basement where we have a permanent diaphragm all or permanent secant piles it's a it's a solution we are trying to Implement already in some projects uh is not as straightforward as you think I think because they're actually they're considering as a permanent structure you require that needs
to be check for crack weed deflection so it is a quite a long process and you might end up with almost a similar similar reinforcement quantity so or member thickness but there are some savings some important Savings of that That can be achieved so it's worth to consider it if uh they are a bit desperate with spies with the space sometimes you know you can save a few few centimeters if you have a permanent structure and then the green concrete mix is also are mandatory in line with the DMC credity you've probably seen it before
and the same circuit has been attached to the Uh structure section here you see a section f11. um done okay utilities here we just mainly the referring to d y and Tra requirements uh indoor environment design MEP requirement to referring to American Medical code again ashrae Security in the referring to Syrah the local regulatory agency and then what is interesting also the The client requested a specific part for Villas because consider the Villa is a big chunk of the uh the property markets in Dubai so they felt the need for specific code which is in
line with the rest of the of the code but it was like a standalone passed and um obviously simplified for some aspect uh it's interesting for structure that in theory we can if we refer to ac716 there is a Possibility that the seismic design doesn't really govern the design the seismic loading doesn't really go into design so there might be uh the wind might open the lateral loot so uh before because I think I was proposing to open so if you click on this link you should be able to yeah yeah yeah you will be
able to Go yeah here this one so this the page the the landing page for the Dual building code so if you open as I said is freely available so for example if you click on any other party you will send you directly to whatever you want to see but that let's look at the structures then I think we are interested so um finish the performance statement definitions okay these are there is some definition interesting for laboratory geotechnic specialist contractor which you can see the useful on the technical section especially when they request who's going
to do the Gir who's going to do the design so it's important to understand Or annotation or reference so when you talk about essential references just for your knowledge these is considered part of the um somebody can I just check I don't think we can see your correct screen it's just as the uh the thank you ah sorry yeah no yes okay no problem thank you I promise so yeah what I'm saying like when you click on the link Or you simply search to buy a building code on Google you will find you will land
on this page it's PDF so there are different um part here you can click on any of this and we'll send you to the right section so uh if you go to structure for example then you're here so performance statement so that's just to definition of the Building what is the building can be defined so definition is that the technical laboratory that can Expressions contracted it can be useful on the digital class section to understand who's going to do what uh notation okay references when I say as I mentioned essential reference I could see the
part of the code so these are effectively um part of the the code itself When you say further reading this is something that can be a recommended a recommendation is a guidelines that can be used to support your design upon the no strict requirement um this framework will just say what uh Sparta and at the past how they read this is a a nice reminder for us to what is structure design and what we need to consider when you do the structure design so it's not Just any any concentration on on a structural performance but
we also need to look at Statics you know sometimes we forget sustainability if it's buildable maintenance the moment structure cost so it is just nice summary to keep in mind uh design life design life I recommended uh I think we say recommended yeah yeah recommended value so theoretically a client mask for a Business last 100 years so especially for tall tower the mask for 100 years in my life uh what is important also for the the design life is that if you go beyond 50 years you need to be aware that you need to produce
a design your ability report so I can show you later so it could be quite tricky we need to be careful with this we need to be keep in mind with to the Bridge reports that might take quite a lot of time and therefore to produce [Music] so the robustness against this proportional collapse will refer to the ac716 which then refers also to the UFC this is guidelines from the usmforce then we can use different uh um uh approach to design against collapse yeah yeah durability as I mentioned earlier then It's Project Specific durability design
report should be provided with one of the following condition is met so for more than 50 years you need to be careful because that needs to be the authority will require it and also when you have this kind of a very aggressive soil condition so in my experience I've seen it the probability reports just solely for Metro project Um so far resistance again is according to the far Life Safety UAE code we talk about the material so structure concrete we Define concrete strength the minimum concrete strength so we can have 100 MPA so we don't
didn't put a limit it's what needs to be asparated on it so the requirements for concrete strength and the reinforcement requirement are Stipulated there concrete mixes as I mentioned there is a possibility to have alternative to what has been couples recommend or requests required by DM but you know it might take a bit of time so sometimes we're not as a European if you're a normal project you'd really have a time or budget to have alternative function this is Something for a concrete mix supplier or some Specialists concrete mix designer these are pretty much the
requirements that are coming from the previous uh Department of Civility State class so we can use high percentage GBS for like up to 65 for uh below ground structure very much so as you can see I think on the next page here yeah there is a possibility to have a low carbon Concrete in some cases If you use like a alternative with different um ingredients in the mix models illustration sometimes is a reason for debate so we said okay we specify the value as per asia318 it needs to be tested if he's not uh tested
then we can refer to ACI 363 the alternative values that can be provided but needs to be specified and they need to be validated Section properties it's so okay the telling our enforcement is CI 318 PT will refer to ec318 and the tr-43 guidance from concrete Society so most of the some of the images you see here the structure from the concrete society and obviously all the images here we are not the reference and copyright and then all the entities like ACI concrete Society eurocode they all agreed to have the Images published in the one
building code um this is pretty slow requirement pretty much same as usual I think there was the usual requirement of I'm just trying to remember what it was pretty I think uh mainly the content of this was extracted from the DDA guideline if you remember if you've seen it before And which was based pretty much on uh tr43 summer terminal everything there is a requirement for 10 minutes to go through the columns for example all provided additional enforcement this one uh [Music] uh precast concrete again refer to the PCI design and book and ACI 318
or Precast that there was also some Requirement to provide some sketches for staircase connection so we provided in one appendix here at the end some details that can be useful is not strict requirements that can be used as a recommendation because them it can be quite tricky there's been some incident in the past so Connection structure still stick rates and that's the usual still creates concrete connection will show the different model failure that we need to check misery for misery we pay for Low batting we need to refer to the American TMS code code TMS
for load bearing but you know most of the time we have no low bearings Mastering walls so we can either refer to American or also the Euro code so we add I mean posts like this requirement for American code because because for load betting obviously if you have eluding condition loading requirements per AC seven then we need to follow the same American American code arrangement okay so this one for ac7 in terms of loads which is uh that's probably Interesting for us that load the usual sdl uh there is some requirement for minimum requirement for
walls unless you can do um digital calculation for the low for the walls live load it is from is requires uh similar is basically in line with SC 716 the only difference is they'll load for car parking is 3.5 so It's a bit more than what is required by the code but there was specific requires specifically required by the authorities um soil and electrostatic pressure so here is important that as usual we need to be aware of the groundwater level which needs to be defined by the gar report and then we need to allow also
for climate change title variation and so on the usual There is a requirement for basically the presuming your body water they should be zero plus one and the way can be defined as the Gir and construction load pretty much oh you can affect the c737 is backed load sc716 okay on the thermal induced Force we managed to use to define here some values in terms for that can be useful For the design because sometimes there is a debate who's plus minus 20 25 15 25 so anyway these give can provide some bit of indication on
on the on the temperature that can be used to define the load obviously if you have still directly exposed to the sun is a different case you need to do a specific a specific assessment by this uh steel protected I think we can use we can use this value does the wind as we mentioned and we are Now referring to a716 so we are bonding the 705 um and then the wind tunnel test requirement now there's another sometimes it's not a reason for debate is the interstory drift we're trying to define the value but then
sorry we're trying to be more flexible we say rather than say Hof 500 to give the range between 400 and show 600. Uh motion affecting equipment comforters has been icu10137 ISO but uh uh this one is difficult to justify unless you have specific wind tunnel testing otherwise is uh I never be able to justify uh dumping okay earthquake so that we're referencing 16 this is divided in agreed which give us a bit of better condition Compared to where we are before you with the UBC class okay needs to be defined as per full investigation uh
we Define the values category that's the space cac7 liquid function as I mentioned is actually refined a different section I can show you later performance so we have importance like deflection controllers but ACI so nothing really new here 318. uh steel work a c7360 okay crack crack control we had a lot of discussion on this so um okay first of all we need crack with Jack and it can be there should be performed especi 224 and the maximum crack weight limits are defined here so this you might be familiar with Is uh is actually a
requirement from Euro code it was felt that it could be useful also here so the crack with limit actually very varies with the with the head of water had a metastatic pressure okay that could be also quite tricky sometimes if you have quite deep basement you might end up with a very strict requirement Um not obviously uh not in contact with water at 0.3 this is the element which are in under permanent tension so always under tension then it's the requirement is 0.1 millimeter such as a tension bars which are always in tension um and
then we for okay for shrinkage and thermal um We add reference to AC 89 it's quite an old guide but this is what has been still referred on the ac318 and is actually a bit less stringent you'll see compared to its Studio 766 CMS 766 is something like the people like to use because they have this very spreadsheet attached to it sometimes when you start looking at in detail like uh especially if you have hand restraints such as Base a base lab on pile or something like that you might end up with the very honest
reinforcement requirement so it's also worthwhile to check ACI 89 um drift information but this is pretty much according to uh that's the ACs 117 when [Music] to to check uh the deviation from plums especially During construction for high-rise building for definition of shrinkage values you can defend to ACI 209 here um that's more into this formula directly from the old code including sc7 vibration for still work with to the American Steel code this guidance 354 concrete it's not really relevant unless you have very long span fatigue sometimes relevant for if you have some Special design
for vibrating machinery transfer transfer element so uh uh we see we slightly simplify the requirements sometimes we have somebody who is asking for you know limited deflection to spawn over 1000 but here we just referring to the code whatever is uh it's required by ACI but the most important thing is you know you just have you need to have two direct supports so double transfer is not Really uh it's not really allowed and then we're going to talk about okay and the structure we also have the section as a digital section is based largely based
in the British and the Euro code including the UK National Annex and the third card is like the IC uh manual on uh I'll show you here is it somewhere there I see manual which is called it Remember one second okay we will see that there so this we Define again some requirements which sometimes the this is quite helpful so especially if there's more project to Define how many potholes you require and what kind of testing so that can report for gir so the Jr should be submitted already and this should be prepared by By
the engineer which is basically the uh then you need to find here I think yeah exactly is an execution by qualified to Technic civil engineer um this is the requirement for GR so when you get a gr from from many soil testing agency you need to have make sure that everything is included uh yeah the IC model of detection engineering that's what I mentally So these are the main documents for geotechling is these documents and the Euro code and the UK National Annex pretty much um foundation design foundation design [Music] for design of so when
you talk about soil properties we talked about padding capacity and parameters in general we can refer to the to the British standard and Euro and The Euro code but then when you talk about concrete design like you know reinforcement design we just refer to the ACI 318 so otherwise is trying to find a cutoff line between the two no um here there's some interesting requirements for minimum reinforcement crack weight as well so 0.1 for permanent uplift Um that's also some minimal reinforcement that was defined which is quite less than was less than what was defined
before um stiffness horizontal stiffness practical stiff and stiffness which need to be you know on when you do like a um designed for The piles lab or pile Foundation so to find the the vertical stiffness is quite tricky so we need to you basically here we need to be saying that we need to do a soil structure interact soil structure interaction analysis to validate the spring value that are provided by the GR so gr file is no accepted usually because also they're depending on the on the loads also the stiffness needs to be it needs
to be A bit of iteration modeling done between the structure engineer and the digital engineer so some flux is more than money will be required unless you ignore the the Practical stiffness you provide that pin support shorting and the hair straightening system that's the usual system that we are provided in Dubai so sort the files continuous pile slider Wall that from all sheet piles and that's what is a commonly accepted and as I mentioned on my slides so we have a possibility to design the retaining system as permanent everything system oh there's something new so
it might be is that might be beneficial if you are tied to its space but I might be a bit more tricky for the design so you need to allow a bit more Extra design effort okay as I sell liquid function so here your function is a bit as a gray area because we are in PS pretty standard Euro code territory part with terrifying and find the American Standard so but we uses a there was Dental to check the liquid function we just to use uh we refine today this bullish method That can actually be
done by the within the Gir then within the gr they should just Define the risk of actions some guidelines and ground Improvement this is for execution which technical work is important here to understand the requirement for testing file Foundation something that something on you that we use to have uh some ground Improvement Yeah and then this is just appendix just to see how we Define the what is the reference studies that we use to define the seismic last study was commissioned by yeah by Dubai municipality Okay so background this is directly to bust the blitz
sustainable concrete Baseline there was the instructor from the circular game circular And it was the Precast staircase detail yeah and then the rest is like yeah I'm talking about the other part of the unit Israel and this so uh as I think okay stop here and then remember we can now we can talk about some questions if there's any questions because otherwise you're gonna run out of time yes okay okay uh thank you very much uh some money um you can see that quite a lot of work Went into uh updating the code we have
a few questions I'll just go through them uh one by one uh the first question is uh does the Dubai building code cover intumescent coatings uh it doesn't uh covered directly so there's no strictly there's no requirement for intermission into missing quantity we also a thermal fire protection we refer to the UAE fls code And then there is no requirement to the content can be if you want you can provide other means of protection like uh Fireball protection or whatever is give you like a compliance with the with the fire ratings that yeah stipulated on
the UF files so there's no realistic requirement for that okay thank you Um second question uh can you please elaborate about temperature loading on internal floors basements and Foundations the question may have come in slightly before you you touched on it earlier but yeah we we managed to agree on these values here that that could be useful if you have a normal condition as I said if you have a steel which is exposed to direct sunlight than one second I'm trying to find the Values then it's uh it's a different story but what is it
one second now so for a concrete so you have the full thermal range of plus minus 20 or exposed element A plus minus 15 for basement effectively the same range could be used to use for steel and delay unless it's protected suppose still then is different store You need to do a specific study because you know like we are under 90 degrees on how much you can get so these are the values that can be used as a base as a starting point for like a normal condition but then is it they will also providing
some guidance on variation of the temperature that can be used also if you want to Define understand when the concrete is casted when the concrete Is exposed or still exposed just Define the movement of the structure okay give the next question from Muhammad farazan um how do you find economy of design between euro and ACI code from a UAE point of view and which which do you think is the most appropriate took decision to follow the American code so there's no I don't really have a choice I mean we have a choice we can raise
the case if we want to use if you Want to do design as per Euro code you can still do it but you know it's a bit more challenging because you need to demonstrate you need to start from the scratch basically Define all the partners and agree all the parameters with the authorities unless you have a specific case you can do it so we we have the decision was taken to keep following the American code ACI code AC code so that's what I have to do for soil Properties yeah and as that for geotechnical we
need to follow the previous standard the Euro code perfectly you know it's a course or is the structure is going to be similar for some some aspect probably Euro code is less stringent for other aspects is more stringent so overall um you should get the same design okay okay so it and it's it's effectively based on the on the American Code the the Dubai code yes yes okay um the next question is there any requirement for performance-based design for seismic and wind no there was a long discussion introduced performance design for seismic but there's no
General agreement was not the the authorities filed that in the international code there's no international code really providing a clear guidelines and performance-based design the fault is Still like a it was almost an r d searching development subject so they they prefer to wait to see what's happening with the ACs you know there's some American ic-780 there are some American code they are they were about to be published I don't know if that could be published I didn't follow but uh that's actually one of the top the top of the list topic for The next
revision to buy a building code because the idea is that one ability coin is going to be obviously going to be updated you need to be catch up with the international standards international code um this is one of the the topic that was like okay let's park for this revision but let's see what happened then let's continue for the next revision okay okay thank you um from Mohammed Tariq which method is Recommended for computing a long wind and a crosswind acceleration for occupant comfort uh but it's more like based in my experience to be honest
yeah so we we stick there we provide the the requirements you know that um well this one here so um one zero one three seven here But affected the best method is uh is to do a wind tunnel testing so you do the winning tunnel testing you have the the wind tunnel test to to provide the product confirmation and the acceleration uh this it's uh we we did have discussion here we tried to provide some guidance here but eventually we see uh it's the story here because uh is Something that there is no really a
method that you can use in a calculation unless you do a test okay okay so you need to you need to be aware and sometimes for some special special structure that's one more reason why you need to avoid internal testing yes yeah okay um just a question coming in is there an official website where we can download the code you can go on Google or you can just go Let me see if I can Google here so if you go to buy a building code I think you will find it yeah municipality okay yeah you
just go to one building code on Google you will find it that's what it is it's free don't need to do anything so you can click and you don't need to register anything that was the main purpose of the code you know to be accessible to everyone Okay very good um okay uh is the code for the UAE or only Dubai only Dubai only Dubai okay only to buy so Abu Dhabi is BC and so on okay rice okay uh long question um coming in so uh great efforts thank you very much for the talk
um so first one are there any discussions On mandatory epds or wlca uh regarding sustainability uh we're seeing this being mandatory in some parts of the world to achieve carbon carbon neutrality so uh uh epd has been the uh the material uh being certified yeah yeah I mean there was push to get all this uh the net zero or a discussion at zero discussion on the sort of discussion There uh do we asked do we had this discussion with the authorities but then uh it was felt that might be too honors just to have uh
something like to establish a very high sustainable Market sustainability Target so the the client at the Dubai building committee was also conscious about cost so They were worried and just establishing like a very demanding sustainability targets my factory cost yes but that's something that um so it's not strictly required by the code but it's something that we discuss with uh you usually we have this kind of discussion uh with the type with with the client especially within our company which is just uh it is actually an internal requirement but was not specifically Um addressed on
the Bible in code even though there is a reference to Hearts of fat you know sustainability code towards sustainability code yes yeah yeah and I guess the higher if you're going for a higher lead score or something you'll be your your six seek out the better materials um okay uh regarding the concrete uh it's great great that we have the DM circular mandation replacement of cement Or ggbs with ggbs suppliers are not secure on the long run and their costs are getting higher yeah are there any discussion then using CDW and concrete CDW being the
uh concrete waste that has been um from Demolition uh yeah I think if if you speak to with speak to any concrete supplier they will tell you that there are some some uh some Uh concrete replacement or yeah as a concrete wastage can be reused but it's not been mentioned here on the on the code but we as I mentioned the concrete mix is something that can be discussed with DM so there are uh open to to have a discussion on other means of replacement and uh just be aware that if you deviate a Little
bit from the code then you be required to provide some evidence you know so um we have we have this kind of discussion all the time but then uh we need to be also depends on the projects you know you have your target deadlines and then if you start spending or waiting for for spending time or waiting DM to approve a mix might take a few months then you just yeah If a concrete supplier yeah I know that I'm aware that they're trying to push this kind of alternative alternative mix correct okay okay thank you
um question from sama is when Lord mentioned as a is there a minimum mention of one kPa for for winload no no there's no minimum one kPa or so but if you do the calculation then you will probably end up with that value Products but there's no if you use this the wind speed and then for for normal structures say you will probably end up with the value right okay but okay just don't mention one kPa okay thank you clear um so Mohammed Arafat um can you please elaborate why the crack with limitation is stringent
for the substructure which is a durability issue only the Fundamentals of the code is for Public Safety only yeah I know but the document here is that that the crack with will uh will dictate the durability and eventually uh the corrosion reinforcement the redesign life the the structure so if Dubai as we know we have very aggressive environment Soil and Water condition very aggressive So technology file that we need to reflect this in uh in the code um so that's why we have specifically specifically uh uh mentioned the crack with values but okay uh it's
that very much um pretty much standard values unless you have a specific condition like uh very deep basement where you need to increase Unfortunately they crack with But you can probably when you talk about flexure cracks you can probably manage and the problem is when you're talking about shrinkage cracks um but they are basically the the crack they're gonna go through the structure you know because they are through cracks uh and then when you need to if you go if you start looking as a serious 766 you might have quite difficult uh uh reinforcement quantities
To justify but we we provide in the code reference to the other guidance from ACI which is slightly more slightly less stringent but it's all related yeah to the durability and eventually yeah to the to the um stability structure on the long term okay thank you and um Muhammad is asking why Dubai building Code uses British standards for geotechnical purpose instead of ACI there was a long discussion at the beginning of the code yeah there was a push to try to get everything on the as paramedic Concord to be to their void any discrepancies any
any no but again there was a bit of resistance um because it was filed in you know the local supply chain the local market they're all based on on British Standards and that was the common practice here so it's difficult to change it overnight and again it's okay for this first revision let's keep American code for the super structure for concrete so steel and then for the soil properties since soil properties are soil properties you know K naught is K naught regardless is ACI or sorry American code to BS so for to define the soil
properties you Can just use the uh the the British standard okay okay um so uh next question is there any changes in the stiffener modifier not matching with ACI no Stephanie modifier I think we just referring to DCI so even at the specific close here will be we just referred to the medical code so we didn't have any changes from the I Know there was some discussion in that but then at the end it was that let's follow the code all right okay okay good um Islam is asking is the modifiers for post-tensions lab mentioned
in the Dubai code if not what value should it be formal questions ACI for the modified again so ACI 318 or tr43 for PT slab So whatever is there we just refer to remember 0.5 remember now but that that's what uh we we just refer to ACI so we didn't mention any specific we originally we mentioned it but then we were asked to remove it and say just don't mention it just to refer to the to the code okay right just to avoid to avoid this this kind of uh confusion okay okay Um well the
good news that's the end of the questions on the zoom but we've got some questions coming in on our our YouTube uh YouTube channel so you're not you're not off the hook yes uh it's the money um so uh yeah and it uh Saeed is just asking right thank you for the presentation uh it's a question regarding the Integrity ties in Precast buildings shown in figure 12. um does it require hacking does it require Hackney hacking of the openings in the in the holocore slabs uh figure 12. avoid looking detail ah this one uh uh
stood this is to be honest I need to check because well what is it actually can you Say again um yeah a question regarding the Integrity ties in the Precast building shown in figure 12 does it require hacking of the openings in the hollow core slabs um okay uh depends where the ties are to be honest we didn't uh we're going to discuss this if the ties are within the Slab or I think they should be without they should be within the slab itself so within the the Holocaust rather than on the car on the
on the topping concrete to remember honest I had to check it yeah okay okay no problem um we've got I think one final question uh from from Abdullah so it's regarding the uh for a 50-year design life um yeah there's a seismic requirement of Let's say 10 of dead load based on based on a 50-year return period but if you have to design your building for 100 years um are there changes to these these values uh based on the building will be there for longer so that it may increase the the chance of a seismic
event um it's more like depends on the type of structured because return periods that we're using is up is more than 50 years 100 years so the requirement is more like on the on the category of the structure of the building rather than on design life with 50 100 years you will probably end up with the same value but it depends on the risk category basically uh if it's one two or three then it will change the seismic no the design life itself So if you design for 100 years or 50 years from the check
with the code but I'm pretty sure you can use the same requirement the only problem is uh yeah if you change the category risk category okay okay and so yeah yeah okay um yeah uh one question thank you very much for the presentation how long did it take to develop the how Long does it take to develop a building code a lot all right a long time yes it was it was a long process a few months yeah but actually the next few months and then I took a few more months once we finish it
finished once we said it okay everything is done finished and then one position it took a few more months it was supposed to be like uh kind of quick uh exercise but there was Actually taking longer actually to issued uh I think overall it was about probably six months for to to develop and then six more months or so or less just to get it published issued by uh and there's also our Arabic version as well this is English but this is Arabic uh so this is Arabic translation okay not just later Okay um well
thank you very much for some money you can see by the amount of questions that uh it's a generation uh quite quite a bit of of Interest which is great and just for everyone to be aware that the um the talk will be available on our YouTube channel in the next 48 hours um I think uh I think that brings us to the end uh so we really appreciate you Taking the time to to join us tonight uh Simoni um no problem I hope I hope was helpful and then yeah I mean as I said
for us it was a very exciting project and uh we always ask ourselves if uh to Bible decoys actually use used and useful so we hope is uh actually we really hope it was uh the useful is useful document at least the starting point for the design just clarify the issues and make it like Clear clear path because you we all have experience in the past I think we we did we did have a bit of a struggle at the beginning you know when you start doing a design in Dubai to understand to navigate you
know yes yes okay we'll let the loading oh yeah I can just design the building the Internet it's completely uh useless I know now I think we hope to make some progressing and help the design community in general Yes yes and uh thank you very much and uh from our side here at the UAE branch of the ice truck D um thanks very much everyone and our our next uh our next talk uh will be um in in about three weeks three four weeks Time by Mappy Koreans uh we hope to see you there and
thanks again uh to our sponsors uh hempo so with Dash we'll bring the session to a close and uh thank you very much have a have a good evening Thank you thank you bye-bye
