[Music] chapter four a Frankenstein begins once stormy November night as Victor succeeds in bringing the creature to life when he looks upon his creation however yes he rushes out of his laboratory and paces back and forth in his bedroom physically and mentally exhausted he collapses in a nightmare he kisses Elizabeth who then dies and transforms into his dead mother he wakes up with the monster at his bedside and runs off the next morning Victor goes into town and walks endlessly through the streets to his relief he runs into Henry Clerval who has arrived to begin
his own studies they go back to Victor's apartment and Victor is relieved to find that the monster has fled but weakened by months of work and the shock of seeing his creation Victor falls ill through the winter Henry nurses Victor back to health during this time Victor raves relentlessly about the monster henry convinces Victor to write to his father reassuring him that he is fine once Victor recovers Henry gives him a letter from Elizabeth that had arrived during his illness this chapter is jam-packed with gothic elements a spooky setting a tense fearful mood the appearance
of madness or illness and a grotesque dead undead monster some critics claim Frankenstein is the first example of science fiction dealing with technology and the potential results of scientific experimentation in the narration Victor does not describe the process by which he creates the monster for Victor this is because he does not want anyone to replicate the process for shelley however this becomes a great way to avoid slowing down the novel and helps to maintain the veneer of realism furthermore Victor does not name the monster he simply refers to it as the wretch and the creature
further stripping it of any identity or sense of belonging ironically in popular usage the monster is often referred to using Victor's last name reflecting the duality of creator and creation [Music]
