previously on patrick h willems this is charles total global fame we don't even know who you are what did you do to patrick i didn't do anything because that's not your patrick this video is brought to you by curiositystream and nebula [Music] this is my favorite bar in the multiverse i know no matter what earth i travel to i can always count on subject to be there look obviously subject is a wonderful bar with a great atmosphere and the best cocktails in town but right now we need answers okay the patrick willems you both know your friend from high school is not the patrick williams you've been working with the past year that patrick is from another universe about two and a half universes away from here on his earth he's a youtube star who tried to dodge the irs and got thrown in the slammer wow dodging the irs i guess he couldn't make it as a real director anywhere wow this is wild so you're me from another earth except on my earth everything is 10 years in the future after i got rejected from carnegie mellon school of music i got into interdimensional crime busting probably a lot more career options so this passed from two and a half universes away what's jake doing there i don't know probably struggling to pull open a push door because he's such a dumb [ __ ] baby geez i'm sorry i told myself i wouldn't do that you see in every universe i travel to in my quest to destroy charles i invariably encounter a jake and every jake turns out to be a useless dum-dum who only gets in my way it's gotten so bad that i've started putting them all in a separate universe i found i call it the upsell jake universe whoa a universe filled to the brim with me uh okay so if this patrick isn't our patrick where is our patrick that i don't know i'm sure the imposter would tell you if you held his feet to the fire yeah fire hurts when you touch it that's a good plan look i haven't even told you guys why i'm here and we don't have much time and upload it all right i'm pretty happy with this one definitely worth all that lost sleep hey charles have you seen my phone i keep getting distracted but when the muse strikes one must answer its call you know charles are you all right you should be thrilled another video in the can my coconut patrick i think i may have found your phone it seems your vice chancellor of content is up to something something no good i suspect but you couldn't ask for a better lackey he would never do something to hurt the channel perhaps he wants to take over the channel himself perhaps he wants to steal your thunder your clout perhaps we should pay jake a little visit look i know i only got here about a year ago but jake's been with this channel since the beginning he's known other patrick for like 15 years and now he's conspiring against me slash him [Music] maybe you're right charles maybe it is time to cut him loose it's always so hard to end things especially when they've been good to you it's like movie trilogies they always start out so well you walk out of the theater on such a high all you want is more of that feeling and then you get it then the ending is almost always a disappointment and why patrick as much as i love your go-getter attitude we really can't do another video where you like explain why a mid-tier film is better than people think charles not now the muse is striking and striking hard [Music] it's patrick's show take my hand [Music] [Music] just don't call it content tell me if this sounds familiar it's opening night of the final installment in a movie trilogy the first movie was an instant classic then the second one came along and somehow topped it taking the characters in unexpected new directions and deepening the emotional complexity of the story and now everything is teed up for a home run finish it's time to bring it all together and tie it up with a nice bow and then we skip ahead two and a half hours you sigh and exit the movie theater shoulders slumped it was not a home run it wasn't even a base hit it was bad i know it's been over a year and we're just now starting to get over the pain of the rise of skywalker but let's be real maybe we should have known it was going to disappoint us i mean how often are endings of trilogies actually good cinema history is full of hugely hyped final installments and trilogies that just ended up as big disappointments the godfather part 3 the matrix revolution spider-man 3 x-men the last stand d3 the mighty ducks at their best third installments tend to be just fine an entertaining movie that's nowhere close to being the best of the trilogy not many people would tell you that the dark knight rises back to the future part 3 our pirates of the caribbean at world's end are their favorite installments in those series and yeah i'll say it even in arguably the most beloved movie trilogy of all time the original star wars trilogy the third film is a noticeable step down in quality from the first two and it has nothing to do with the ewoks now i'm pretty sure everyone watching disagreed with at least one of the things i just said and that's fine i like some of those movies too every movie has its defenders but in terms of general audience consensus the majority of these third installments are viewed as letdowns so the question is why why is it so hard to end a trilogy great question patrick and you know what right now i don't actually have an answer so let's accomplish what none of these movies could and come to a satisfying conclusion i think we can do it and to start we're gonna need to ask ourselves a different question why are we all so obsessed with trilogies why not quadrilogies a word that seems to only exist in boxed sets of the alien franchise well the answer to that lies all the way back in ancient greece and the foundations of theater and dramatic form the earliest piece of literary theory or at least the earliest one that has survived is an essay called poetics by aristotle where he analyzes dramatic structure and genre and basically explains how narrative works this is gonna seem basic as hell but remember someone had to get there first like the adventure of the wheel or the person who posts first in the comments section so aristotle said that in a work of drama there must be a beginning a middle and an end basically he lays out the foundation of what we now call three act structure it wasn't actually until the romans that writers started dividing plays into separate acts and obviously shakespeare used a five-act structure but still no matter what the playwright says the story does always have a beginning a middle and an end so when it came to telling an overarching story across multiple works it was natural to do it in three installments with each installment functioning as an act in the 14th century dante divided his divine comedy into three parts inferno purgatorio and paradiso the concept of the trilogy was born in ancient greece the earliest surviving example is orestia a series of three plays by ice skillus about the aftermath of the trojan war okay i don't need to ramble on any more about ancient greek drama but the point i'm trying to make is that trilogies are just an extension of the most basic foundational dramatic structure they have been a part of culture for thousands of years so there is a precedent here but even if trilogies have existed for that long and there are a handful of examples in the 19th century by writers such as henrik sinkevich are i'm going to butcher this alois jurassic they didn't become a popular storytelling form until the 20th century when a british nerd wrote a long dorky story about a bunch of people with pointy ears hiking toward a volcano lord of the rings and since then there have been a lot of trilogies the ultimate trilogy of the epic trilogy special edition dvd collectors trilogy only one trilogy the ultimate action adventure trilogy obviously trilogies have existed across every art form there's david bowie's berlin trilogy and about 12 million y. a fantasy trilogies but because i would like to finish this video before the end of the year we're just gonna talk about movies but even if we're only talking about movies we've gotta set some ground rules for what movies we're talking about i know i'm still gonna get eight thousand why didn't you talk about this comments but hopefully i can cut off a few of those here we are only talking about third installments and franchises that were designed as trilogies so for instance we are not talking about the sam raimi spider-man since there was supposed to be a fourth movie that got cancelled and so it just ended up as a trilogy we are also not talking about indiana jones or mad max which were trilogies for a really long time because the fact that those are trilogies is totally arbitrary each movie and those series is just one of many adventures that those characters went on there is no overarching story i mean the second indiana jones movie is a prequel similarly no blade no iron man and no captain america none of those actually function as trilogies blade just happened to stop at three movies because people didn't like the third one and in the other two those characters don't get endings until like six marvel movies later the third captain america movie is really just an avengers movie that sets up the next avengers movie the only mcu trilogy that counts as a real trilogy is guardians of the galaxy and they haven't made the third one yet so fingers crossed i really hope that one's good and we are also not talking about thematic trilogies so kieslovski's three colors trilogy are sergio leone's dollars trilogy our edgar wright's cornetto trilogy our park chan mook's vengeance trilogy those do not count and i'm so sorry to say this but we will not be discussing the look who's talking trilogy where's that peepee we're talking about peepee here i need that baby oh no mr toilet man let me be clear here storytelling is not a science and movies are not math there is no one way a story must work and no formula that every good film must adhere to plenty of great movies are great largely because of the ways they buck traditional approaches to storytelling no one is going to tell leos corax that he should have added a save the cat moment to holy motors what we're talking about here are merely as they'd say in the pirates of the caribbean trilogy guidelines actually even guidelines seems a bit much these are observations on storytelling approaches that were reverse engineered from movies that are widely considered to be satisfying and enjoyable this is all subjective what i'm talking about here is based on my own analysis as well as ideas i've taken from writers who are smarter than me okay now as we've discussed by its nature a trilogy falls into a classic three-act structure the first film is the beginning the second is the middle and third is the end so when we ask why is it so hard to end a trilogy what we're really asking is why is it so hard to write an ending and endings are famously hard to write why do you think jj abrams spent decades avoiding them at all costs and look what happened when he finally wrote one and an ending to a trilogy is even harder than a regular ending because you're not just ending one movie you're ending three you may be familiar with robert mckee the guy who wrote the essential screenwriting book story more importantly he was played by brian cox in the movie adaptation and there's one scene where he screams at nicolas cage anyway story is a good book and to me the most useful concept discussed in it is what mckee calls the controlling idea this is in simplest terms the ultimate meaning of the story expressed in the climactic scene it's kind of like a theme but with more to it see a theme is just a word a vague concept being discussed so let's take a movie that we love talking about on this channel star wars episode 8 the last jedi a theme of the movie is failure but the controlling idea of the movie is to grow and find peace one must be able to learn from failure apparently when patty chayefsky legendary writer of movies like network would figure out the controlling idea for a script he would write it on a note card and stick it to his typewriter so that idea would guide every choice he made in the story so here's the thing with trilogies the third installment is the climax of this whole three movie story which means that this is the point where the controlling idea must arrive and this has to be the controlling idea for the entire trilogy essentially the third installment must declare what the ultimate meaning of all three movies has been and this is very hard to do because here's how trilogies are usually made the filmmakers make one movie and are just concerned with making that one movie really good and telling one complete story that has a satisfying ending and then it's a hit and the studio is like hey make some more how about you make it a trilogy people love trilogies and we love packaging trilogies and boxed sets but the thing is the first movie functioned just fine on its own it had its own controlling idea and its own meaning and then you get to the third movie and suddenly you have to give a new meaning to the previous two movies that we had already watched you can't do what petty triyevsky did and write the whole trilogy around the controlling idea because movies are made one at a time usually so essentially the third film has to retroactively deliver a controlling idea that feels consistent with what was presented in the previous two movies this is why when the middle chapter in the star wars sequel trilogy tells us that greatness can come from nothing and we need to move beyond lineage and outdated systems and then the third chapter says actually history and lineage and old systems are what matter it feels so wrong it's totally at odds with the story we thought we were watching okay let's look at the matrix trilogy that first movie is a perfect masterpiece and it tells a beautiful complete story that ends with the controlling idea that a better world awaits when you free your mind and accept your true self it is empowering and triumphant and it kicks ass and then you get to the end of the third movie where the ultimate controlling idea is revealed to be a better fairer world is only possible if we are willing to sacrifice everything at least i think that's it this movie is complicated but basically in the end neo makes the choice to sacrifice himself in order to get the machines to agree to a compromise in which humanity is allowed to have free will it's not even that this is a bad idea or the wrong idea but in this case it is not the idea that most of the audience wanted compromise sacrifice those aren't the cool cathartic ending people wanted and so this kind of soured them on the franchise as a whole and then for the next decade everyone just like stopped talking about the matrix but okay let's look at a time when the controlling idea really worked in richard linklater's before trilogy which is about as far from the matrix as you can get these are three movies each made nine years apart that are just about two people walking around and talking and i would say that based on the third movie the controlling idea is that real true love is difficult and complicated and messy and it's rare so it's worth the effort if you can find it these three movies were not planned as a trilogy link leader and his collaborators actors julie delby and ethan hawke would not even start discussing the next installment until five years after making the previous one but they feel consistent and of a whole this idea expressed in the third film feels true to all three movies and actually gives more weight to the others when you go back and watch them when i re-watched all these movies i noticed something that never could have been planned when the first movie was made in 1994 but now it feels intentional at the start of the first movie what brings jessie and celine together is this middle-aged couple arguing on a train and then in the third movie jessie and celine have become that couple the controlling idea of the trilogy is there from the very first scene it all comes full circle and here's another example in the bourne trilogy the controlling idea of the third film is to find peace and justice we must first reconcile with the events of our past and this works because again it's consistent with what we've seen in all three movies each movie even the ones made by different directors were essentially about the same idea so the conclusion feels satisfying wait no we're only talking about the original trilogy here that fifth movie [ __ ] it all up forget i included the clip let's move on but there's more to a satisfying ending than just one big central meaning michael arndt the writer of movies like toy story 3 and little miss sunshine has this really great video essay called endings the good the bad and the insanely great where he breaks down what makes some great movie endings so effective specifically focusing on the original star wars and the graduate what art says is that the climactic scenes of these movies as in where the controlling ideas are revealed simultaneously resolve three sets of stakes there's the external stakes as in the major goal the characters want to achieve the internal stakes as in the characters internal struggles and growth and their inner emotions and then the philosophical stakes the ultimate values and ideas that are in conflict side note michael arndt wrote the original draft for the force awakens which supposedly has a nearly identical first act but then is very different and from what i hear better than the final version of the movie if anyone out there has a copy of this please send it to me this is like my white whale i want to read this thing so goddamn bad that is all moving on so for example let's look at the ending to casablanca a really good movie that most of us are probably familiar with the external stakes are whether rick will help laszlo escape the germans the internal stakes are whether rick will get back together with ilsa and the philosophical stakes are self-preservation versus selflessness and so in the climax rick puts his own bitterness and apathy aside he shoots strasser to help laszlo escape he puts ilsa's happiness above his own and lets her go and he inspires renault to get back in the fight with him in world war ii all three sets of stakes resolved in one scene boom great ending and spoilers i guess sorry the thing with movie trilogies is that the first movie is usually a massive success that audiences love and that's because it tells a really good story with really clear stakes like the first pirates of the caribbean the external stakes are will the heroes escape the ghost pirates that one's easy the internal stakes are will elizabeth and will admit that they love each other and get together and the philosophical stakes this is a little more complicated but also what takes the movie to another level will the heroes live their lives freely or will they just accept who society tells them they are society tells elizabeth that she is meant to marry respectably it tells will that he is only a common blacksmith and it tells jack sparrow that he is a joke and a terrible pirate you are without doubt the worst pirate i've ever heard of and in the end the heroes defeat the ghost pirates will and elizabeth get together and everyone rejects societal pressure and becomes who they want to be elizabeth is like [ __ ] you to all the men who are trying to control her will becomes a pirate and jack gets a ship gains respect and becomes a captain again and then you get to the third movie i know there are technically five movies in the series but the three directed by gore verbinski are really their own trilogy and all i care about now look i genuinely do like the third pirates movie but i like it more for its great directing and visuals and set pieces than for a tight emotionally satisfying story because it doesn't really have one you see pirates has the same problem that befalls many trilogies the internal stakes have already been resolved in an earlier movie so there's nowhere left to go jack sparrow's internal stakes were all wrapped up in the first movie and in the sequels he is elevated to a more central role in the story but also he has no internal stakes his entire story across the second and third movies is fighting davy jones for his own survival and there's some vague hand waving at philosophical stakes about like freedom versus control but it gets really bogged down in mythology about pirate kings and spells to summon goddesses so it never really sticks in the end i still think the movie is fun but it doesn't leave you with that elated satisfied feeling that the first one did this is one of the major recurring issues across movie trilogies the first back to the future has really clear internal stakes for marty mcfly his whole life he's been told that he'll never amount to anything and so he needs to prove he can accomplish something meaningful no mcfly ever amounted to anything in the history of hill valley he has to do that by learning to understand his parents as people and then in the other two movies he's just scrambling to solve the external stakes there's a really half-hearted attempt to give him some growth where he gets into fights whenever anyone calls him a chicken chicken nobody calls me chicken but that plays as more of a running joke than like genuine internal conflict so back to the future parts two and three while fun never feel as meaningful as the first one and the same thing happens in you guessed it fifty shades freed i mean return of the jedi a new hope and empire strikes back are as great as they are because they deliver the full set of stakes in empire there are genuine internal stakes for luke han and leia the philosophical stakes in which the heroes choose love and loyalty over self-preservation are what end up dooming all of them and in return of the jedi it's not quite as well thought out by far the best part of the movie is everything with luke darth vader and the emperor because that's where all the stakes are the internal stakes of whether luke will resist temptation and the dark side whether vader will be redeemed the philosophical stakes of empathy and love versus anger and hate and obviously the external stakes of life or death this stuff is all great and then there is everything else in the movie in jw rinsler's book the making of return of the jedi there are transcripts of the story meetings between writers george lucas and lawrence kasdan where they admit that they've spent so much time figuring out the luke and vader stuff that they just neglected to write arcs for han and leia and so there are no internal stakes there it was all resolved in the previous movie now everything with them is just about the external stakes of accomplishing the mission lando's redemption happened off-screen between movies so when he pilots the millennium falcon in the final space battle there are no internal or philosophical stakes at play and so it doesn't feel as meaningful as luke's death star run in the first movie one of the ideas lucas had in his initial outlines was as he wrote luke and leia have to decide between the rebellion and saving han which would have actually created philosophical stakes that would connect thematically with the whole emperor story but then george decided not to do that again none of this is to say the movie is bad i like the movie but every time i watch it i can detect a drop in my emotional investment whenever it cuts away from luke and uh this is why the exact same thing happens with the matrix revolutions every time the movie cuts back to the humans fighting in the big battle in zion none of them have internal or philosophical stakes they are not growing or changing these people are just two-dimensional characters fighting mindless machines and morpheus's internal stakes have been all wrapped up so like han and leia in return of the jedi he just kind of chills out and hopes they win the dark knight rises delivers a big epic finale with huge external stakes but what leaves it feeling a little unsatisfying is that it never figures out what its philosophical stakes are the dark knight the previous movie was all about the philosophical stakes the whole movie is just batman and the joker fighting for their different philosophical viewpoints and then in rises initially it seems like it's setting up some interesting ideas bane is weaponizing societal inequality the one percent versus the 99 batman loses all of his money and resources the movie is questioning whether peace is worth it if built on a foundation of lies and then over the next couple hours this all gets extremely muddy in the end the villains actually have no real philosophy we learned their whole plan is really just to blow up gotham city to get revenge because batman killed liam neeson in the first movie another thing that should be addressed is that behind the scenes stuff can have a big impact on storytelling movies are absurdly difficult productions to pull together that require hundreds or thousands of people working together for years and sometimes contracts and schedules can screw up plans for the story so yeah it's finally time to talk about the mighty ducks trilogy the main character of the series since the beginning was gordon bombay a man named after two brands of jinn the emotional core of the movie was his relationship with the kids on the hockey team he coached and then when it was time to make a third movie due to scheduling conflicts emilio estevez was mostly unavailable so he only shows up in about three scenes and the main story of the series gets abruptly cut off and feels like a betrayal of that character since he just bails on the relationship we had been invested in for two movies and it's something that the movie is never really able to overcome and then of equal cinematic significance there's the godfather trilogy due to salary disputes robert duvall declined to return as tom hagan in part three and so one of the central relationships of the series between tom and michael corleone is just over the emotional weight that could come from having tom there 15 years later as michael is trying to leave the criminal business behind is just gone a major character in the first two movies gets no resolution and that alone makes it impossible for part three to measure up to the first two the thing with a trilogy a story that we as the audience have devoted years of our lives to is that we want to feel like it all meant something in mckee's book what he stresses as the most important lesson in the whole thing is just the three words meaning produces emotion we want to walk away from the ending having had this big cathartic emotional experience and without stakes and ideas that combine to mean something beyond just plot mechanics we're not gonna feel that so yes it's finally time you can all stop yelling at me it's time to talk about lord of the rings i've been pursuing charles for almost five years now and every time i feel like he's in my grasp he slips away like a slippery little coconut covered in coconut oil okay i know he wiggles and has a creepy voice but what is so threatening about a googly-eyed coconut okay for starters he's not actually a coconut that's just the form he's taken on this earth in reality he is a notorious interdimensional criminal with a stolen shape-shifting module what charles is an acronym clout hungry artificial robotic life form he feeds off of clout and the more cloud he gains the more powerful he becomes he just chose a coconut form because it's cute simple and easily turned into merchandise before this he's been a kiwi a pineapple a large pile of rotting mangoes how would that get him clout it was a really gross universe did you know that coconut this ton of [ __ ] spelled backwards it is tunnel [ __ ] okay that is kind of funny but what's not funny is that when charles becomes too powerful he begins to exert a corrupting telepathic force that poisons the minds of sentient beings imagine the whole human race transformed into mindless charle-obsessed zombies we're talking the entire psychic entropy of this planet so then let's kill this coconut he's already too powerful to destroy by any traditional methods his fame has made him stronger than you can imagine oh well don't worry about that see i've got a fully formed plan here i'm going to shoot an episode of jake's politics corner with charles serving his co-host and then when he least suspects it i'm gonna blast him just like in that movie joker yeah many jakes have tried this they have all failed and leading us into our next section charles coconut here to tell us what it's like to get blasted on camera bullets [ __ ] [Music] that's awful so many universes and they all have the movie joker okay i get it you've spent this whole video shouting at the screen but patrick what about lord of the rings to which i say please stop posting it over and over again in the live chat i saw it the first time okay so let's talk about lord of the rings because yeah it is probably at least in terms of big budget blockbusters the most fully successful and satisfying movie trilogy ever made it ends strongly it has a controlling idea that is consistent through all three movies and it has the full set of stakes resolved at the climax it rules but the thing about lord of the rings is uh it's not really a trilogy in the 1940s j. r.
r tolkien wrote the lord of the rings as one single work a massive novel spanning over 1200 pages and then mostly for financial reasons the publishers decided to split it into three separate books thus making it a trilogy this is not a case where he wrote one self-contained successful book and then decided to continue the story it's just one book and then the same thing happened with peter jackson's film adaptation just as the source material was written all as one text the three movies were made together as one huge production then released one at a time over the span of three years so we can't evaluate lord of the rings the same way as other trilogies with every other trilogy the first installment has to function as a totally standalone movie with a complete satisfying story the godfather star wars the matrix before sunrise they would all be great even if they never became trilogies but lord of the rings doesn't have to do that it announces itself as a trilogy from the start so the first film can simply leave off at the end of act one without resolving anything the three films were always designed to be viewed as one whole piece i think lord of the rings kind of broke everyone's brains despite being written as just one big book the books popularized the idea of telling a story across multiple installments especially in genres like fantasy or science fiction and it created this impossible standard lord of the rings is an anomaly from the origins of the source material to the execution of the movies nothing like that has ever happened before and i don't think we can expect anything else to do it again when other trilogies have attempted to do what lord of the rings did they almost always suffer back to the future the matrix and pirates of the caribbean are the three big cases of trilogies where the first movie was such a phenomenon that the sequels were made back to back in one giant production and then released only a year apart or in the case of the matrix a mere six months apart okay and this might be a hot take but i think in every one of those cases even though i like a lot of those movies the trilogies would be better if each installment had been made one at a time what happens in all of these cases is that parts two and three end up being this one big massive misshapen sequel that happens to be split in half where the middle chapter is kind of this sprawling messy setup for part three the empire strikes back is a middle chapter that tells an actual story can you tell me what the story of pirates of the caribbean dead man's chest is i don't think you can and don't tell me it's about finding the dead man's chest to defeat davey jones because that is also what the third movie is about both back to the future part two and the matrix reloaded ended by playing the trailer for the following movie which i thought was really exciting at the time but as the years have gone on i've come to kind of hate that choice it's turning movies into episodic tv with a preview of the next episode at the end the movie we just watched immediately no longer matters since now all we care about is what's going to happen next time i don't think we appreciate how important it was that george lucas waited three years between every star wars movie it forced the audience to sit with the movies and re-watch them and talk about them instead of immediately just moving on to the next one and i know the movies as tv approach is a major part of the success of the marvel cinematic universe since every movie there ends with a setup for the next one and then the next one comes four months later but honestly and this may be because i'm old i'm happy to wait a bit longer remember james cameron waited seven years to make a sequel to the terminator and then that was it he was done after that hollywood basically tried to make four different versions of terminator 3 since they can never let things go but cameron knew something that i wish more people would learn that it is much much better to make one great sequel than to make a mediocre trilogy okay let's get to the real point here because word is that right now a third paddington movie is in development and folks i'm nervous for all of the reasons that i've talked about here they already made a perfect sequel a movie so great that the world has officially declared it better than citizen kane and it tells a complete story with a great satisfying ending would i like more paddington of course give me all the paddington you got is there a chance the movie could be another masterpiece yes there is but as we have spent all night showing you third movies are very hard i know the word trilogy sounds important and exciting but there's no reason that paddington needs to be a trilogy there are no story threads left dangling after p2 i am perfectly happy if it remains just two great movies don't make a third movie just for the sake of having three movies which is what we in the biz call the hangover approach so to the movie-making people i have just one solemn request that i want to express from the bottom of my heart don't [ __ ] up paddington3 please okay and one more thing patrick this is all very interesting and i appreciate the dedication to the channel making a whole other video in one night but time is of the essence okay but there's just a few more points i need to break down right you do that i'm gonna go grab some fresh air so back in the late 2000s we all thought the trilogy was complete but then came you guessed it shrek forever after all right chloe your destiny is calling don't let it go to voicemail will you help me stop this googly-eyed monster once and for all look we've only just met and you're like a carbon copy of me which is a lot to process and now you're telling me all this crazy stuff like things were just starting to go well for me i can actually afford the fancy cheese at the deli and now you want me to buy into this insanity about an evil patrick and charle being an interdimensional criminal no way but the psychic entropy of the planet all charles ever did was make us mildly internet famous i really don't get why you're so obsessed with killing him sorry whatever you're planning to do i don't want any part in it but thanks for the drinks hey can you venmo me for your drinks oh and also half the appetizers i know it was my suggestion but you did kind of house those jalapeno poppers where is chloe uh she left so it's just you and me did we talk all night i should get home my wife is probably worried sick oh right you're married in this world yeah rachel she's my rock she means whatever i need to get back to my hideaway and figure out a plan to deal with charles so no wait you can't just do this on your own look i know you don't like jakes but i promise you that this shake won't let you down fine maybe we'll get lucky i know we will [ __ ] my child tracker he's on his way we've got to get off the streets fast okay i think i've got it i could slingshot us around a passing dimension and the force of that should get us back into this dimension all the way up town but it could also smash our atoms into a million pieces scattering the dust through the cosmos that sounds terrible it's either that or take the one a local train in midtown at rush hour let's do the dimension thing it sounds less risky he's already here we're too late go i'll hold him off do you want to get yourself killed charles is much too powerful oh ye of little faith i have a secret weapon jake he can deflect bullets yeah this is a hammer please for the love of god oh [Music] [Music] please hammer do hurt him [Music] ah jake you finally decided to turn against me excellent what you see i've been to hundreds of different dimensions oh this is totally new information to me and in every one there is always a pesky do-gooder who gets in my way this will be the 11th earth i've corrupted and i know this dance by heart if this is the best hero this universe can offer this will be the easiest one yet are we gonna keep gavin or are we gonna do this [Music] take your shot if you think out of three can't believe i had to take the [ __ ] g train for this [Music] chloe don't be scared i'm leaving you but there is another another ah i hate these masks brother you must find my brother you must find matt what the hell is matt [Music] hi folks it's patrick and yes you read that text correctly it said to be concluded this whole long season that we started back in january 2020 if you want you can call it the charles saga it's about to end and the ending is not going to be another regular video essay that would be doing charles dirty we're giving that coconut the vip treatment you see the season finale is gonna be an entire short film probably 20 to 30 minutes long we've been building to this for over a year now and we're finally here so if you're like dan slott and think the narrative sections are the best part of the videos then i think you're gonna love this and this part is technically an ad because the finale is going to be available exclusively on nebula you know the streaming platform that i'm always talking about that i helped build alongside a lot of the best creators on youtube see part of the point of nebula was to give us the freedom to make bigger projects outside of the stuff that we usually make on youtube projects like this one this finale is going to have an actual budget and that's because of nebula and our partner curiosity stream look if you've watched this far and have actually become somewhat invested in the story of a coconut with googly eyes i assume you'll probably want to see how it all ends and i want to make this as easy for you as possible so here's all you have to do if you sign up for curiosity stream at the link in the description down there you'll also get a free subscription to nebula it's that simple and look if you want to cancel right after you watch the finale that's fine but honestly i recommend that you keep it because curiosity stream has this massive library of thousands of great documentaries such as the secret world of lego which is narrated by mr brown from the paddington movies and nebula has all these great original series and podcasts some of them featuring me plus all the videos by your favorite creators with no ads and in better less compressed video quality than on youtube which honestly means a lot to me anyway the point is this whole long narrative is about to end and to wrap it all up we're making an absolutely bonkers little movie if you've come this far maybe you're willing to come a little further if you want to see this thing all you have to do is sign up at the link in the description it will probably be out in about a month so thank you for watching thanks for all the support and going with us on this wacky journey i am really really excited for you to see what we're working on r. i.
