is that hard times create hard men. Hard men create soft times. Soft times create soft men.
[music] Soft men create hard times. >> We don't back down from anyone. And that's what got me in trouble.
I don't play games. I don't kiss anyone's ass. And I'm a real man.
It's grind [music] season, homie. It's not about today. It's about the future.
You do the work now. do the work now and all of the [ __ ] that you could ever want to do for your family, your kids, your loved ones, it's all going to be on a whole another stratosphere. You have no [ __ ] idea how great you really are because you are using such minimal minimal of what you have.
I don't make mistakes. I'm not just like the rest of you. I'm stronger.
I'm smarter. I'm better. I am better.
I am cold. I am emotionless. I am zen.
At peace, ready for war. >> It's time to stay focused. It's time to decide.
[ __ ] clubs. [ __ ] partying. [ __ ] trying to fit in and socialize.
Rub elbows [music] with everybody so people can stop calling you weird. Drve your [ __ ] nuts. For once in your life, have some ownership, some credibility behind your actions and your words.
Mean what you say, do what you say. >> You can't win. Why can't you change your thinking everybody else does?
>> Cuz I'm a fighter. That's the way I'm made. Adrian, >> people day.
>> The message I try to deliver to people is play to win. Don't play to avoid loss because the things you fear are the things that's going to happen to you. Set that target on something positive.
Work for it. Expect it. If you want to give up, you can give up.
This is your choice. You can do whatever you want. But how you going to give up?
Like so many years we were working together like and you like only 26 years old. But if there's one message I want you to walk away with today, it's this. You have to disappear.
Disappearing means doing the work. It means doing the work in the dark. It means building in private what you don't need to prove in public.
It means doing the work when no one's watching. You stop worrying about what people think [music] and start valuing what you believe. Because a life that looks good or sounds good is nothing compared to a life that feels good.
>> Those times when you get up early and you work hard. Those times when you stay up late and you work hard. those times when you don't feel like working, you're too tired, you don't want to push yourself, but you do it anyway.
Um, that is actually the dream. That's the dream. It's not the destination.
It's the journey. You had nobody anyway, [ __ ] Look around you. There was no [ __ ] team.
It was you. There [music] was no weight loss program or mom and dad waking you up saying, "You can do it. You can be better.
" [music] Trying to build belief. You built belief when you had nothing. Rock bottom.
We're not on this stage just because of talent or ability. We're up here because of 4:00 a. m.
We're up here because of two a days or five a days. We're up here because we had a dream and let nothing stand in our way. If anything tried to bring us down, we used it to make us stronger.
My high school English teacher, Mr Fisk, he had this beautiful quote and he and it read, "Rest at the end, [music] not in the middle. " And I took that to heart. I believe there's time for resting at the end.
But for me, that time is not now. >> Why? We all ask [music] why we should work this hard.
Why take that many classes? Why go to school [music] that many years? You know, why take the notes?
Why read the books? Why work [music] that hard? Why put yourself through the push-ups and the disciplines?
Why? Good question. [music] Why?
Best answer to why, I think, is the second question. Why not? I never looked at things as problems.
I looked at them as opportunities. Maybe look, maybe that's something I can say, you know. So, ah, what she did this and I Well, what an opportunity you have.
>> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah.
Well, the world, you know, because they said this and she said that. Yeah. Well, well, what an opportunity you have [music] to make a difference because you never know who's watching.
But more importantly, you shouldn't do it to be seen. >> I give you the map. You are willing to do that.
>> Yeah. It's [music] the main the main point because everyone wants to be Cristiano but I give you the map. You think you will do it that it's difficult.
It's >> the discipline. >> The discipline is the most difficult thing. Not only in the sports but in the life.
Oh, you know you know the truth. You know the truth. You know the darkness of the [ __ ] dungeons and the [ __ ] demons that fly.
You know and then from there it's like okay you were there. You know this. There was no one there to pick up the rucks sack, to pick up the boat, to pick up the log, to go in there.
It was you. It was you. There was no pat on the [ __ ] back at 300, at at 275, at 250, at 220.
No, that was you. I'm afraid of my shadow. How can [music] I overcome that?
Go in the military, get your ass kicked, do things you hate to do, be uncomfortable every [ __ ] day of your life. [music] Roger that. >> You should never be satisfied with what you got.
Because the the attempt to get more makes you into something better all the time. Don't let anybody tell you, "Hey man, you know, you should just be happy way. " Uh, no.
You should double your business. >> Be the guy who [music] embraces the ugly, the miserable. Um, [music] be the guy who embraces hard work, the grind.
Don't be afraid of [music] being hurt. Don't be afraid of sacrificing some blood. I don't believe in talent.
I'm here because I worked hard my whole life. Without that work, no one in this room would know who I am except my family. So to all the kids around the world [music] watching, paying attention, and aspiring to be like one of us or even on this [music] stage someday, put the work in and watch the magical ride you go on.
It's the what if I can pull [music] off a [ __ ] miracle? What if I can become someone that no one thinks I can be? And just that, just me talking about that, I have the hair growing up on my arms because it makes me just like, what if >> you had to create a human, what would you put [music] them through to make them tough?
>> It probably wouldn't be a really chill life. >> Yeah. >> What would you put them through to make them patient?
[music] You probably wouldn't give them things immediately. And so it's like, we want these traits, [music] but each of the traits has a price tag attached to it. And it's just like, do you want to pay the price tag to get the [music] thing?
And so I think if if people reframe the the period of life that they're going through as the price that [music] they're paying out of their wallet, but the wallet is their time, as the seconds of life that they're trading for it, then I think more people be willing to make the trade because at least when I look at myself, like when I'm 80ome [music] years old and I'm looking back on my life, I want to have these traits, but in order to have those traits, I know I have to go through these things. And [music] I think for me, that's given me a lot of comfort in hard times. >> Pressure changes everything.
[music] Pressure. Some people you squeeze them, they focus, others fold. Can you [music] summon your talent at will?
Can you deliver on a deadline? The consistency of work. Monday, [music] get better.
Tuesday, get better. Wednesday, get better. Right?
And you do that over a period of time, you know, not like one [music] month or two months. I mean, it's three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10 years. And then you, you know, [music] you can get to where you want to go.
>> It's easy to give up. It's easy. It's the easiest thing in the world to do.
I I'm done. I [music] ain't going. >> I ain't going to keep going.
I don't feel like going to work. >> It's easy. It's very easy.
But [music] what's hard is going, "Yo, yesterday I got nothing from working as hard as I could. " Nothing [music] happened from that. >> I'm going to do the same thing again today, but I'm going to try to go harder.
That's the hardest thing in the world to get up every day >> and give 100% [music] and and be in the same position that you were each day. But mentally know that you're trying and [music] trying and trying. That's that's a real that's a real grind.
>> There is no shame to admit [music] that you're afraid cuz there's no courage without fear. And when I made peace with that, it changes everything in my life because [music] I made peace. And I said it to even in my opponent like, "Yeah, I'm scared of you, but no matter what, I'm going to freaking walk the walk on Saturday night.
" And there's nothing [music] you can do. And the way you counter fear, whether you're a fighter, an entrepreneur, or whatever, [music] it's with the preparation. The more well you prepare, the more you [music] will build up your confidence.
>> Mhm. >> And if you have confidence, remember, confidence is not the absence of fear. It's knowing [music] that you have what you need in order to succeed.
And as far as regrets and things I wish I would have done differently, of course, hindsight, [sighs] hindsight is 2020. And looking back, of course, who wouldn't want to take another go at something and improve on the first try by doing it again? And then why not do it again and again and again?
And why [music] not just do it over and over again until you have it perfect? But the fact is, [snorts] you don't get that chance. You get one shot.
[snorts] One shot at this gig right here. Life. One life.
That's all you've got. and regret in and of itself. It's worthless.
It does nothing for you. In fact, the only valuable thing in [music] regret is the lesson you learned, the knowledge that you gained. But walking around filled with regret gets you nothing.
Don't let regret beat you down. Don't be a slave to [music] regret. No, let it teach you.
Let it make you [music] better. Let the fear of regret [music] fuel you to take action today. Now, the magic [music] you are looking for is in the work you're avoiding.
The magic you are looking for [music] is in the work you're avoiding. Every single time that there is something in front of me that I I feel like things aren't coming my way sufficiently quickly, [music] I'm not making the progress that I want, it's because I'm about over here and there is a large frog in front of me [music] that I need to eat. I need to spend another half day reading a book.
I need to spend [music] some more time researching online and upping my skills in this particular area. I [music] need to do whatever it is. >> I was a very public failure and I even thought about running away from the valley.
But something slowly began to dawn on me. I still loved what I did. >> I stopped pretending [music] to myself that I was anything other than what I was and began to direct all my energy into finishing [music] the only work that mattered to me.
Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena where I believed I truly belonged. I was set free [music] because my greatest fear had been realized and I was still alive and I still had a daughter whom I adored and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so Rock Botton became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.
You might never fail on the scale I did, but some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to [music] live without failing at something unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all. In which case you fail by default.
>> Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond [music] measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that [music] other people won't feel insecure around you. We were all meant to shine [music] as children do.
It's not just in some of us. It's in everyone. [music] And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to [music] do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. Sir, I just want to say thank you. Those days when I'm tired or worn out or just basically sick of the grind, what what do I do on those days?
I go anyways. I get it done. Even if I'm just [music] going through the motions, I go through the motions.
I don't really want to work out, I work out. I I [music] really don't want to hammer on a project. I hammer on the project.
Don't really want to get up [music] and get out of bed. Yeah. I get up and get out of bed.
Don't take today off. Not today. Wait until tomorrow.
Don't Don't give in to the immediate gratification that is [music] whispering in your ear. Shut that down. Do not listen to that little voice.
Instead, go through the motions. Lift the weights. Sprint the hill.
Work on [music] the project. Get out of bed. You need to get [music] things done.
But if you are going to rest, that is one thing that you should procrastinate on. That's the [music] one thing I want you to put off until tomorrow. And if when tomorrow comes, you still feel like you need to rest or you need to take a break, then okay, take it.
But the chances are you won't. You won't need that rest. Chances [music] are you will realize that the desire to rest was just weakness.
It was just the desire to [music] take the path of least resistance, the downhill path, the easy path. And by [music] simply going through the motions, you overcame that path. Then you stayed on the righteous path, the disciplined [music] path.
You stayed on the war path.
