just before I went to study to the state I visited Korea that was my first visit I wanted to see United States and I wanted to see my ancestors country before I go abroad to u.s. to study but to me as a young student seeing something out there some foreign country with different culture different language different way of lifestyle everything was very exciting you know everything that I see and fear in Japan were ordinary so something extraordinary thing stimulate my brain my way of thinking the way of life and vision this was a quite high
opening for me if I didn't go study to the state totally different me so you know giving some kind of stimulus some change in my life dye election was but but exciting thing not just so much of studying English or studying some text book at the college it's really changing my circumstance when you are high school students or college student when you before you get your official job determine your life once you decide your job then you have one course already set but before you decide your job you have 360 degree of chance of choosing
the course and seeing and feeding abroad with totally different environment open your eyes I think that's that's the kind of thing that helps people think much deeper think differently and so we live in a globalized world to me studying abroad in u.s. or learning English was not only that meant to see the United States or learning English for for the sake of us life style it's the opening to globalization - of communication with any people around the globe you know good or wrong that's that's the de facto right see this is the picture that changed
my life this is page of computer science magazine when I was just walking and reading flipping through I found this page when I was a student in the state I didn't know what it was and then I looked at the next page and found out that this was one of the very early microprocessor I was quite amazed because in my days computer back then was a big computer and this is a small very small size it's a size of your nail so because I studied abroad in the United States and the US was ahead of
Japan in terms of the computer science that gave me the again the eye opening to the new technology world this is again my picture when I was a student this is the bunch of computers at UC Berkeley Roland's laboratory right yeah that was the actually nuclear nuclear thing and now I I don't like McRib this is the picture when I was studying there these scientists they were the first programmer and designer for the micro computer chip and so I was also going to the Space Science Laboratory this is the picture that I whenever the student
I be stood one of the computer show in San Francisco and this is this was I think a couple of years after Apple introduced a patoot this was even before before IBM PC was introduced I said wow this new life is coming new technology so looking at the the sad news of the death of Steve Jobs back then he was becoming a hero yes so that was the year the microprocessor was actually really introduced and all these young guys you know just a fresh college student they got so excited and went into this hobby and
you know actually quit the college to start the company right although we're here to promote study abroad not quitting cause when you a young you know when we were a college student it was the beginning of a microprocessor and a personal computer but later on when internet was introduced many of the revolutionary companies were actually started by students college students there so even within the United States I think there are some conservative culture area California is much more open and more challenge challenge oriented I think it's like a cowboy culture right throughout the world there
are quote Silicon Valley yeah it's a spirit of you know challenge challenge and entrepreneurship with the big high tech and so on I think that's that's really important to have that kind of culture artists you can be a sportsman or you can be you know entrepreneur but whatever the course it is I also want it to be become a painter you know art artists of painting that was one of my dream it's not money it's not Fame it's it's something that you wanted to become with as as we are passion as a dream I think
that's the key that time I said that I want to go study in a state and my uncle's aunt you know my relatives all tried to stop me and say massage why are you going to state when your father is in hospital and I said that well I asked our doctor and the doctor says fortunately he is going to recover but it's going to take time and I asked my father after the opposition from everybody else I asked my father father you know I want to go study in the state what should I do he
said he's the only person he said musashi go ahead I feel happier if you study in the state and get stronger that make me feel happier and stronger you are my hope so go ahead and he really meant it so you should give him that million dollars Yoga comes out right and yoga tells to the Jedi that you know ask to the force don't look at what you see don't listen what you hear just listen to the force and the Jedi ask what's false he says force is in your mind ask to yourself don't let
somebody else determine your life ask to yourself as to your own spirit you are you know inspiration you decide by yourself for yourself you know for your own life and don't let anybody else you know come across your way once you determine then you overcome any difficulties without deciding which mountain to crime and just walk around is just wondering and life comes you know only one time and pass away so quickly so don't just walk crime a mountain that you dream of if he wants to be an entrepreneur but he may not have an idea
a good idea and he thinks about the risks of starting up a company so if there's any good advice if you don't have any idea about studying starting your own company sink that's it I just started IKEA company I have a two questions I'm planning to go to United States for business also I'm planning to go to India like your father so if you were me which one do you choose and this is first question and second question is if I go to India could you give me 1 million dollars well if I were you
I would I would actually go both country looking at United State there are full of a business opportunity and I I actually visited India a couple of times and I visited China so many times India is going to grow dramatically so India you have plenty of opportunity even China I would say you know there are so many opportunities but whichever country you are your gut feeling you know determining yourself you should choose by yourself but if I were you I look at both countries please actually visit if you have the opportunity to do so actually
visit there both countries and decide by yourself million dollars if you are lucky you get from me or from anybody else bunch of venture capitalists now all over the world if you have great ideas you know they'll have full of money full of opportunity you just come up with great idea with your own passion with the business plan and the money will chase you okay I'm 20 year of 21 years old if you are my age what do you want to do except for hanging out with cow hanging out with cow because I because I
I know well when I was 21 years old I actually already started my own company when I was 19 years old so I was very busy actually studying but I also had a dream of becoming a businessman becoming entrepreneur so I think at your age or my age when I was you know same as yours having a big dream is the most important thing what's your dream think about your dream and have a strongest passion than anybody else then you will succeed in any dream that you have okay thank you but there are lots of
competitions so you have to work don't chase a girl let let the girl chase you when you have when you are shining when you are dreaming something big the girl will chase you I hope I pronounced the right mentor the master of your soul right you asked me about the meant I meant I meant I in Hakata he meant a mentor I am still you know still small I have lots of hero in my mind Steve Jobs is my hero Bill Gates is my hero it's good to have your own hero if I become your
hero I'm very happy that there are so many great people and having having a passion about learning those you are hero and you know make yourself become like that role model is very very good to me my my biggest hero is Duma Sakamoto since I was 16 years old he was my big hero that's why I decided to start study abroad it's very good when especially when you are young having your own hero and dreaming about such a such a thing is is actually quite helpful I think there are two kinds of mentor the physical
mentor that actually will help you guide you and support you in a day to day life another kind of mentor who is not physically supporting you on a daily life but it's a spiritual mentor that you study about him and or him or her and you run virtually from reading about it seeing about him and you virtually ask you know what is he thinking when if he were me and so on I think those that kind of spiritual mentor virtual mentor in your mind is sometimes even more important because then you can choose anybody to
become your own mentor and the guy wouldn't let you down well I think entrepreneurship is not something that you can understand by reading or hearing you would only understand if you actually challenged and experienced by yourself so I don't believe in you know consultant who has never started his own business there are so many business consultant who are like a specialist the person never done his own business entrepreneurship not necessarily can succeed by himself when he actually tried so the Entrepreneurship you would only understand if you if you experience by yourself it's not something that
I can explain in words I think in the back of our minds we want to become entrepreneurs now we're somehow affected but then if everyone thought that way and everyone became entrepreneurs like everyone would be making their own companies then don't you think some bad will come of it if everyone made their own companies or do you think only good will come of it and the mountain to climb tonight audience is I think is a special audience because you already chose to come here and already listening in English you are speaking trying to speak in
English and already over 50% of you are already interested in becoming an entrepreneur audience outside of you know this room or people walking on the street is not necessary 50% of them are interested in studying their own company so even if 1% 2% people decided truly decided to become in a great entrepreneur that is already very very good so you can think about it but when you actually decide to do it it's very small number of people it's it's very good I'm very happy that now you are feeling that you should become one of entrepreneur
it's it's not a situation outside of this room that much so I think it's we already doing something good right your second question what do I feel about myself which stage am I on my cramming mountain last year I thought that I was 10% of my mountain climbing maybe 20% and now I feel 3 percent you know the mountain actually became bigger for me big challenge big challenge and I think that you know I'm still too small compared to the dream that I have lots of way to crime up by the way only only about
the week ago I visited the Apple and visited the announcement of iPhone 4s at the Apple when I was having a meeting with Tim Cook who is the new CEO of Apple now I was having one-on-one meeting he said oh master sorry I have to I have to quit our meeting and I asked why why are you going he said well my boss is calling me so that was a day of the announcement of the iPhone 4s and he said the steve is calling me because he want to talk about their next product and the
next day he died as you know so even one day before he was you know passing away the first subject he wanted to call still you know the Tim Cook the day of the announcement of their newest product he wanted to talk about next product so he was calling Tim Cook come quickly to my home because I want to discuss but that's the kind of spirit through entrepreneur would continue to have until you died I feel that he was very sick very ill that the announcement of the newest product made him live longer physically he
was he could have died much earlier but his passion his love about his his own company and the dream of next products that made him you know energized and stalee I think it's it's very important that you have your spirits in your mind much younger when I was you know grammar school student I had four possible dreams I wanted to become a grammar school teacher I wanted to become politician I wanted to become artist I wanted to become entrepreneurs those were the four potential dream that I had at the end I chose to become an
entrepreneur but I still have a passion about becoming becoming a teacher of some kind so I start started supplying academia it's not to teach about the science or mathematics it's about teaching becoming you know entrepreneur or becoming my next successor of our group company so in one way I am you know still chasing my young dream of becoming some kind of a teacher I already decided that I would when I retire at the age of 60 s either between 61 and 69 I retire from the CEO job of Softbank then I would start painting the
only thing that I don't chase is becoming a politician I would say that as we were saying all all about tonight is having passion having dream for your own life life is only one time funny story my father just beginning of this year he asked me same masayoshi do you have a $1,000,000 can you give me 1 million dollars he asked me you know seriously so I said father why why is that what why do you need a million dollars of course I can help you you're my father I would give you money anytime and
he said oh I don't need the money but I just going to start a company 74 years old and I asked him what company do you start oh I was just going to start a company in Indian I said what India are you going to go India and start a comfort you don't even speak Indian language or English and we have no friends over there and you you say you're gonna open up a company in India and he said yeah India is going to grow - you don't understand you don't know India is going to
go you are smart enough to start a companies and invest in China and I was not smart enough at the attend but now I will say next one is India so I'm going to go ahead surgery invest a million dollars I call this it I convinced him to stay home he was so angry because she really wanted to start a company in India but I respect him even more because you know with his age and he doesn't need money here he has enough money but his spirits of you know still trying to do something new
overseas where he has no experience of visiting India so that's a speech is very important [Music]
