story behind that product they want to know who made it why they made it and how it's made it isn't enough to just make some skin care that you like and then bottle it for sale customers now want to peel back the layers and find out what your formulation philosophy is and what you stand for and against this is why Indie Beauty has taken off in such a big way the mainstream Beauty Giants are struggling to keep up because it's so much harder for them to change the way they've worked for decades when a customer

speaks to a huge mainstream brand their feedback will most likely never even reach the formulation team and let's not forget that the beauty Giants are faceless and don't have that strong connection with their ingredients that you do you as an organic skincare entrepreneur can exploit those weaknesses in the global beauty industry by being different by actually connecting with your customers and you do that through your formulation philosophy so what should your formulation philosophy cover well I'm going to share a couple of secrets with you that I've learned from my years in the organic skincare sector

firstly you need to know what natural means to you organic means that an ingredient is grown to org organic standards but the term natural is more open to interpretation which is why you need to Define it some people will view a natural ingredient as being picked directly from nature and having undergone no chemical processing whereas others take a more pragmatic View and are happy to accept some chemical processing if they're going to use an ingredient that originally came from nature but has been modified slightly to become a functional ingredient let me explain formula Botanica has

redefined what natural means in cosmetics and our definition is now widely used across the Indie sector we've done that by defining three main shades of natural which are shade number one is purely natural these ingredients have been picked directly from nature and only undergo a degree of physical processing which hasn't changed the chemical structure of the plant examples include shea butter or cold pressed carrier oils such as this avocado oil shade number two is naturally derived these ingredients have been harvested from and have then undergone a degree of chemical processing in order to create the

finished ingredient examples include many functional ingredients such as this emulsifier which we're going to use in lesson three to make your natural Emulsion shade number three is nature identical these ingredients have been made in a lab and are chemically identical to their natural counterpart examples include citric acid which is also used as an acidity regulator it can be derived from citrus fruits but is typically labs synthesized for ease of use and cost might be more sustainable to make it this way too as a skincare formulator it is up to you to determine what natural means

there is no right or wrong answer in this case there is only a spectrum of what natural means and how you interpret this definition so that's the first part next you need to know why you chose the ingredients you're working with what do those ingredients mean to you and your story where have they come from under what conditions were they grown or harvested what do they do for the skin how can they help the person using your formulation how far have they traveled to get to you how were the workers who grew or harvested your

ingredient treated your customers will care about all of this information and you should too and then finally you need to know why you chose to make that formulation who are you trying to help with your product why is your formulation different how are you going to change your customer's life with the blend that you've created of those beautiful Botanical ingredients what story are you trying to tell with your formulation so you can see these are Big questions and they won't be easy to answer but they will help Define your formulation philosophy and ultimately your future
