hey it's renee from origins and today i'm going to be teaching you how to perform a depth jump in this video i'm dropping down from a 40 inch tall box which is about as high as you need to go for this exercise the higher the drop the harder it'll be to get a fast take off if you're a beginner you're going to want to use a box that is about 12 to 24 inches tall whereas stronger jumpers can use boxes that are 24 to 40 inches start by standing on the edge of the box keeping
your legs perfectly straight step forward off the edge like you're walking the plank try to resist bending your knees or lowering yourself take that full drop like a champ but seriously though you improve this exercise by taking off of higher things and you defeat that purpose by lowering yourself into the takeoff now as you're stepping off the edge try to pull your toes back so that you can stretch the muscles and the tendons of your lower leg almost like stretching and pulling back an elastic band the landing and the take off from the ground are
the most important part of this exercise the sequence of the landing and the takeoff need to be done forcefully and with as much speed as possible absorb with a minimal bend of your hips knees and ankles then quickly push through your feet to take off depth jumps can be done with different styles of jumps including vertical jumps broad jumps and box jumps for parkour athletes i primarily recommend doing vertical jumps vertical jumps have more emphasis on hip extension because you do not need to close your hips in order to bring your feet forward to land
