[Music] i got a reusable starbucks cup and it's the best thing i've ever done i've started to make my own matcha lattes at home and oh my gosh so good hey guys welcome back to my channel my name is petty and my channel is nella grace my most popular video two videos that i've ever done wasn't talking about active recall and from those videos i got hundreds and hundreds of questions about how to implement at a recall how to do it and i've done subsequent videos showing you practically how i actually study if you don't
know what active recall is active recall is a proven scientific evidence-based um learning method which is based on the idea of actively recalling information so asking questions repetition and all that stuff but one of the questions that and kind of concerns that i got the most on those videos was well how do i make sure that i can remember this stuff i'm actually learning so a lot of you were saying that okay it's all good and well me listening to my lectures me reading a book but how do i actually remember this information because either
you're saying that you have a problem with memory you feel like you forget everything that you learn or it's just not sticking in your brain if that sounds like you then this video is for you because i'm going to be sharing with you ways that you can improve your memory and improve your focus improve your concentration in order for you to actually apply active recall and therefore be able to learn better so if that sounds interesting then please keep watching i actually have a full video about brain foods so if you're interested to find out
more about the things you can eat the things you can start consuming to improve your brain function i actually have a whole video about that that you can watch there i think this will be a really good video to go with this one so after you finish watching this video you can go watch that video to see kind of the things that you can start consuming to improve your brain function so your brain functions by creating connections through neuronal pathways so neurons connect to each other create different pathways for different things learning memory almost anything
that you're learning what anything that your brain kind of takes in it creates pathways so they used to think they being the scientists used to think that older people or the older you get you were not able to kind of expand or grow your brain or make these new pathways but in the last decades we found scientists that there's actually something called neuroplasticity and neuroplasticity is just the ability of your brain to make new pathways and therefore enhance your learning process and you can learn new things so there's people that are like 80 obviously that
can start learning how to drive or start learning how to flip flipping fly a plane and they can do it because of neuroplasticity so when it comes to learning when it comes to memory when it comes to anything to do with kind of studying you want to kind of work with this principle of neuroplasticity and improve your ability to make neuronal pathways and therefore improve your ability to remember information the first thing that i wanted to actually share with you guys is this amazing technology and headset called forebrain so for brain is for your brain
new just said it out loud and he thought it was funny so i just said it i just repeated to him so it's just basically a headset like this and this is an evidence-based scientific headset that basically trains your brain it uses this incredible technology using the audio vocal loop so what this means is it uses your own voice in order for your brain to give your brain kind of like a sensory workout so when you're speaking the headset conducts your voice through the bone which is the faster faster way of conducting sound to your
own brain instead of like just through the air once it does this it gives your brain a workout a sensory workout so this helps you to remain focused it helps to improve your cognition your cognitive functions it helps you to concentrate if you have actual learning disabilities like dyslexia like if you've got a speech impediment it's incredible for that but specifically for students like mike like yourself or for people like me who are still trying to learn something what this will do is improve your memory so all you need to do is use this headset
for 20 minutes one to three times a day while you are studying so how i'm using it is as you guys know i'm currently waiting to start working in a few months time and while i'm waiting i'm still learning i'm still reading my clinical handbooks i'm still trying to make sure that i don't forget the information that i you know last learned like months ago so what i do is 20 minutes a day i will open one of my clinical handbooks i will speak out loud by reading like a condition or do two conditions a
day um as in a clinical condition read it out loud and then i try to active recall by closing the book and then trying to remember what i just said and saying that out loud again without the book so what's happening while i'm doing this is i'm reading it out loud this headset is picking up my sound it's giving it back to my brain through the bone conduction and the filter and is giving my brain that exercise that we're talking about that sensory exercise and improving my cognitive functions and improving my memory and improving my
focus so it's such a great technology like i said it's evidence-based there's been a lot decades of research that's went gone into something like this so this is an absolute incredible tool to help you with your active recall so just like you would usually study instead of studying by yourself use this headset speak out loud use active recall close your book try to record that information that you've just learned with your closed book and continue to do that practice this every single day 20 minutes three times a day if you can one to three times
a day with this headset and within six to eight weeks you should be able to start seeing results when it comes to your improvement in memory your improvement in other areas not just memory but in your focus in your concentration in your productivity in your efficiency so a full brain sounds like something you want to try then definitely go check out the link in my description box and so that you can go buy it for yourself or at least find out more information about how it works and the science behind it definitely check out the
link in my description so that is the first thing that i would recommend to use in order for you to improve your memory so that you can do active recall in a more efficient way the second way that you can improve your memory for active recall in order for you to actually utilize active recoil the best way is to learn how to tell a story i know you're like what how does that work basically there's this technique with memorization where if you attach like a story a picture something like that to the thing that you're
trying to learn it will help you to remember it better so my news actually been using this for bible memorization so he's trying to memorize all the books of the bible yeah so what he does is he remembers he basically summarizes that chapter so for example genesis chapter one in the bible is about the creation of human beings so he knows that chapter one is about creation just took the bigger story of that chapter attached it to a word and then he knows what that is so basically by being able to tell a story with
whatever you're learning you're able to remember it more so if you're trying to learn scientists you might be like how am i supposed to tell a story with scientists one place that does this really well is sketchy so sketchy farms sketchy micro they do the exact same thing they have stories that surround microbiology subjects pharmacology subjects it's absolutely amazing i use this all the time in my first and second year and that's literally how i managed to pass pharmacology because i just found pharmacology so difficult but when i could attach this picture to these medications
and tell a story it was incredible it really works it worked for me when i was doing pharma if you don't want to make up your own stories you can find pictionaries you can find you know other apps and and websites that already make stories for you for certain subjects obviously i'm talking about medicine specific but you can do this in other subjects as well where it applies the third way to improve your memory for active recall is by practice repetition repetition repetition the more you repeat something the more it is going to be in
your brain so it doesn't make any sense for you to learn something one day only go over it once and then never go over it again in like three months it just doesn't work this is where space repetition comes in and things like that but practice practice practice some of you are in your a levels you're in your gcses or you're starting your a level soon you're starting a gcse soon you're always asking me you know does this work for my a levels my gcses how can i apply this for my for you know for
high school practice get practice papers get get past papers do loads of questions if you're studying math or engineering do lots of formulas over and over and over your equations over and over and over until you get it i was really weak at maths in my a levels i was like it was my weakest subject the only way i managed to improve my math in my a levels was to do lots and lots and lots of the equations especially integration and differentiation all that a lot long equations the only way i could do it eventually
was because i kept doing it over and over i had to get an extra tutor for extra lessons outside of school and that's how she managed to help me to know it is by repetition off by memory and then the more you get it wrong keep trying until you get it right and so forth so practice practice practice that is my third tip the fourth way that i would say to help you with your active recall is to learn to summarize it kind of goes with the other two that i'm talking about when it comes
to for example when i'm saying i tell a story you have to learn to summarize i used to take notes a lot of notes in my first and second year i have an old note-taking video that in that video i tell you guys i used to write really long notes and then a and then kind of summarize them into shorter notes and then i would um even summarize them into like bullet points but with active recall i have learned over time how to summarize into just bullet points straight from just learning something so i will
read a lecture slide and i've just learned how to kind of read it once and straight away make it into like three bullet points and i will remember that let that whole lecture slide from those three bullet points so you need to be able to learn how to summarize long text of information into literally bullet points and those bullet points you need to be able to see those bullet points and immediately remember what that was trying to say like as an expansion-wise this is how you can also utilize active recall for essay-based based um courses
and questions which is another question that you guys asked me like does this work what if i'm having my exams are essay-based how am i supposed to remember a whole essay you can summarize your essay in five bullet points like for five paragraphs for example and you can literally just write one word for each paragraph that will help you to remember each what each paragraph is supposed to talk about and then write under each bullet point one or two references that you're going to have in each essay that way you're only memorizing things that you
have to memorize like a reference like i used to reference actual authors in my um biomedical sciences essay-based exams because i just memorized the the the author and i memorized generally what he would have to say and i would make one point and that's how i would remember my essays so learn to summarize a long piece of information into bullet points and i promise you your active recoil can be applied to anything even essay-based questions last way that i would share with you guys about how to apply active record also improve your memory when it
comes to learning the active recall method is to learn to teach someone so when you've learned all the information that you've learned try to teach someone it's so easy to think you know something until you're asked a question about it by someone else and the thing that you actually should try to do is teach someone who knows nothing about the subject and i know this can sound counterproductive because you could be like well i'd rather teach someone who knows about the subject because they can correct me but why this is actually really good to teach
someone who doesn't know anything about the subject it forces you to simplify it and if you can simplify something from a very complex idea to a very simple idea and teach someone who doesn't know anything about that and then be be able to get something from it it means you have learned whatever that thing is really well it's very difficult to teach someone a complex idea in a simple way unless you understand it for yourself because if you're getting something wrong i guarantee you the person you're trying to teach they won't get it and they
will ask you questions they'll be like but i don't get that what does that mean but how does that work new does that to me all the time like i'll try to explain a concept to him like a medical concept to him and he'll be like but how but how does that work but but how does that connect with that and i have to think i have to be like oh my gosh okay so how does that work it helps me to identify the gaps in my knowledge but also it really boosts my confidence when
i know that i can explain something really well to someone and again especially if you're doing essay-based questions this is a great way to learn because essays are basically you explaining a concept to an examiner so this is why teaching someone would really really help you when it comes to active recall okay guys so all these ways that i've actually told you about how to improve your memory are forms of active recoil teaching someone is a form of active recall because you're getting it from your brain with no notes so is i'm telling a story
so is using forebrain by you know teach speaking out loud closing your book and then trying to remember that thing and saying it out loud again that is a form of active recall everything that i've shared with you guys is ways that want to improve your memory but whilst also doing active recall as you're doing it and i promise you you'll be able to see really great results as many of you have already told me that you have and i hope that that can also help you to know how you can implement it and alter
it for different subjects it doesn't have to be like you know multiple choice-based questions this can be used for absolutely anything including essay-based questions as well so guys thank you so much for watching don't forget to check the link in the description below if you want to get the headset and i genuinely really recommend that you do at least try it and then see how it goes for you otherwise thank you so much for watching guys and being part of my back to school series i will see you guys on my next video bye
