welcome to ignite Z my name is Elsie and I'm here today with one of my guests I'm going to allow him to introduce himself U my name is Shaka and uh nice to meet you yeah um so thank you very much Shaka for introducing yourself today's topic we're going to be talking about is social issues that are affecting our young people in our society and today's topic we're going to be mainly focusing on is academic pressure how young people are experiencing academic um pressure within the school system and with their academic as a whole so
Shaka tell me a little bit about your experience with academic um my experience with academic pressure like I said like um I was born like not born I I grew up in Siri so like most of the schools that like when you go to like it's kind of weird cuz like you're not surrounded with like a lot of the kids from like your diverse back background and like sometimes it can make it hard to fit in and like I feel like fitting in like it's not necessarily like like you don't have to fit in necessarily
but you have to at least feel like comfortable or something like with like to what school you're going to cuz then it if you're not it makes it also harder to learn like you might not want to go MH um and also on top of that I feel like like um teachers could kind of be better like somehow like supporting their students maybe like on 10one and if they don't have that time then they should be trying to like get the student like some other type of help like maybe from like a counselor or something
because like some students just don't have access to like um like extracurricular activities such as like cuman or anything that their parents can put them in and it also makes it harder like if they can't do that and a lot of kids nowadays like they don't have have like such a long attention span so if like they're doing homework or something and it's like they're frustrated and they don't understand then it's like 15 or 20 minutes will go by and then after that it's like they'll just give up so I feel like it's like very
like important to like get extra help like or get extra help to the students like in need like in any way possible mhm yeah well that's that's brilliant that's excellent um sh thank you so much for sharing that beautiful um um experience of yours and what's going on around our kids and our school system tell me like how how the academic system has impact your life um hasn't really impacting my life I feel like it could be like better like obviously like there's things in school that you'll like you'll learn that like you'll use in
everyday life but like I even have to learn how to do like my taxes myself like I didn't get taught that in school or like just like the basic stuff like how to apply for mortgage or how credit works like a lot of people don't like know how that works and like it's really really easy to get yourself into the depth literally all you have to do is just get one credit card yeah but um I feel like it could be way better like in impacting people's lives more like for daily lives not for like
in the future cuz like you never know like I feel like School prepares you to have like a certain type of jobs in the future not for the future so I feel like they should be preparing you more for like the future and for like actual life not for like a certain job that you might get in the future cuz not everybody is the same like the same student you teach something might become a doctor and then the other student might become like a YouTuber you know so like you never know I just yeah that's
my take on it okay yeah well thank you very much um I Heard earlier you mention about how we can support our youths or our young people with their academic achievement um what sort of way do you think or what advice do you have for us as parent who have young people who are going to school how can we support young people um how can you support them well number one I'd say like as for parents like get mad like I like you shouldn't really get mad if your student like doesn't understand anything mhm cuz
that doesn't necessarily mean that you're not paying attention in class M cuz like sometimes it might not be them there might like there has to be something that is either hindering them from actually learning what is in class or from not paying attention so I feel like you have to first try to find what that is and if it really isn't anything then I say you should just as a parent if you just don't know where to like start I feel like like trying to talk to like maybe like a counselor or just going to
see the counselor with your student um would make it like a little better yeah but I would also say like I know like for parents like they also wen't the best for their kids yeah but I'd also say like don't also try to like really like forcefully do anything because if it's like with kids like it's kind of like sens they're kind of like sensitive more like in high school year so like if you try to be uh forceful and everything then like the next time they might they have a problem or anything they might
not come back to you and it could just be for anything like it doesn't have to be for school like it could be for like one day they might accidentally do something like some drugs or something and they might like you know something happens like they won't want to come to you like they just won't know cuz they're not going to know how you're going to react right M like I feel like parents work well with their kids when their kids know how they are like when their kids know how they'll react like in certain
situations like if I know my mom is going to mainly support me after like maybe like a mistake I just recently did over rather than like be like be little me and like get mad at me and like I'm more likely to go to her but like if I'm also unsure of how she's going to react then I'm also less likely to go to her so I feel like it's also like reassurance too like parents should try to reassure their children that like they're just trying to like like really help them like not like not
like they're not mad at anyway yeah yeah so basically you're saying that parents needs to support their kids in any ways no matter what yeah um the circumstances of the child is like trying to understand or communicate properly to that child whatever they're going through like like I understand like what you're trying to derive at like as African parents or diverse as a whole our expectation for education is very high so it becom comes like yes you need to bring an a you have to be an a student and it's not really about that it's
about the focus of what the child is needing right and also I feel like a lot of student I mean a lot of parents get wrapped up about like what's like so good like the best jobs that they've seen like back home or anything like a lot of parents don't know like it's such like a new world like a lot of people can make money literally just like sitting on their phones and doing a certain thing like if you if you have that certain type education then you'll know how to like you know exactly what
I'm talking about yeah so I feel like they should really focus mainly on what like like the future they want for their kid obviously like like as in by Future I don't mean like you shouldn't really trying to be controlling your kid as in like oh this is what you need to be this is how much money you need to make or this is what you need to get in school maybe try to find out their interest first yeah and if like they don't align with something that's as so good in the future you could
try to ADV like advise them but what they do then just obvious honestly just try to encourage them in like what that is and like even if you might not see the value in it such as something like content creator and creativity yeah like you should at least give your child like a chance to show you um show you like the value in it like how like they can prosper from it or like how like they can grow from it like you shouldn't just like like um like write away way like just like cancel it
just cuz it's not like a doctor or like a lawyer you know what I mean like you should at least give it like some sort of chance cuz you never know like most of the parents that um like have brought their kids here are like now like pretty old like like I said they're only used to like the normal jobs you know they don't know about like the like like there's so many jobs out there like even just online like it's actually kind of crazy like so I say parents who just try to give like
their their children like a chance to become what they want to become you know but yeah wow that's that's amazing you know like hearing from you as a as a young person um just giving your voice out there like how parents um needs to understand what the education system is all about it's not about just being a doctor being a lawyer but there are a lot of professions out there that you can become in the society today we live in and to become a successful person in in societ so that is so amazing now one
more question I want to ask you um when it comes to like supporting um young people because you mentioned in your previous conversation that um kids who are struggling with academic um problems I don't like to use the word problem but just academic um issues that are going on how do we support especially like with the community like what things do we need to put in place to support these children who are struggling and also who have parents who doesn't understand how to move forward to support these children uh that's like a really really hard
question to my like but I'll would say mhm I feel like um maybe well I'm speaking for mainly like if I was just to say like like for black people mhm like I said said like a lot of the schools here is like it's kind of really hard to fit in yeah so I would say um probably it would be best like if there was like if there was like a certain program almost like like at certain schools or somewhere that could help like kids like come together it doesn't have to be black people just
all kids from any races yeah but like mainly reaching out to um like African uh descent like um I think it help help kids like connect and like if you just if you made it more revolve like around like their schooling and just actual actually try to bring like actual professionals like maybe Tutors or something that could help the students then I think like that would help a lot um it is kind of hard to say though cuz like children and like every people are like changing every day yeah so I feel like there's not
one certain right answer to help everybody but I think that would help like certain people MH um also maybe like yeah that's okay that's fine no worries yeah um maybe be more like what their parents if their parents like don't understand like like a certain like if their parents don't know how to help their child then they should at least try to talk to the counselor and try to see if the counselor can help your child MH cuz I feel like like counselors are in school like like for a reason yeah so you should like
be able to use them yeah like they shouldn't just be getting paid for doing that thing yeah but um yeah I think they're really good resource oh okay yeah that's good well that's good to know because you know I know a lot of um parents who probably don't understand what the mean like important of having a counselor in school and they try to like just avoid it and it's very important when you have counselors in school because you get resources from them they give you the support that you need so I'm really glad that you
kind of brought up that topic to kind of like kind of mention that in that the use of counselors in school is very important um to have but thank you so much um Shaka for coming here to talk about your experience and I really appreciate it and I hope that we can make a little bit of a difference in our society in our community and um yeah thank you so much for being here and thank you so much for watching and don't forget to follow us on YouTube Facebook um Instagram and Tik Tok thank you
