so I was scrolling on my feed today and UPC came the list of the top 10 most popular dogs and I got to say there's a few breeds on here that really surprised me let's get into it I'm K mccan welcome back to mccan [Music] dogs people are asking us all the time for some advice on what type of breed they should get for their family and just recently they released the top 10 breed list and um I do find that a lot of times people will go to these types of list to get inspiration
or to see if there's a breed on there that would be good for them but today I want to talk to you a little bit about that top 10 list and about how many of them are actually not the best family dogs and because I've owned many dogs myself and I also have access to hundreds and hundreds of dogs I've learned a thing or two about some of these breeds so I'm going to tell you everything you need to know about this top 10 breed list the German short hair pointer this is a dog that
is obviously from Germany hence the name they were originally a gun dog now these are pretty cool looking dogs actually one of our instructors has one her name is Friday and she's pretty darn fantastic the cool things about these breeds are the energy level so if you're a person who's really active that likes to hike a lot that is going to be able to give this dog a lot of exercise then it could be one to consider but do know these particular dogs are known for their energy level they also can sometimes be a little
bit independent a little bit selfish in a way so if you aren't super experienced or um haven't really had a lot of experience with training in general they could be a bit more of a challenge so the German short hair pointer would be perfect for somebody who is going to be living an active LIF style they would be particularly awesome if you were interested in field training or anything to do with what the dog is originally bred for because they do have a lot of really strong instincts that still run True to this day while
I've seen some people be very successful with these breeds it's typically not one that I would recommend for a family household they really just require just too much attention and exercise they really are better suited for people who are going to use them for what they've been bred for or are ready to exercise them like crazy next is the Rottweiler now the Rottweiler um is a lovely breed and it was originally bred to herd livestock and pull carts with like meat to to Villages uh definitely a working dog and I don't know about you but
I haven't seen too many Rottweilers uh hurting uh hurting around in our country anyways most of the time you see Rottweilers depicted on like movies and whatnot as like that big scary dog along with German Shepherds and Dobermans and whatnot but in my experience with Rottweilers uh although I've never owned one myself we've had all kinds in classes and they are so sweet they are one of the sweetest snuggliest breeds I've seen they look like you know they look big and scary at first but a lot of them are very very gentle Souls now obviously
if you were interested in getting a Rottweiler you would need to want a bigger dog they're a big dog they take up a lot of space they eat a lot of food that type of thing some of them can have a little bit more energy some of them can be super chill um but they are typically quite a nice dog so um even though they look big and scary I would still recommend them for a family because they can be gentle and kind I would say the biggest struggle that I see with people with Rottweilers
is just that of their size they are a big strong breed it is important that you train them to have least respect and not pull not jump on people um so you do need to be ready to do some serious training and if people are not firm enough with them and really make sure that they lay down the law in terms of what um their expectations are having a boisterous untrained Rottweiler could probably not be a lot of fun so it is important that if you decide to get one you do need to make sure
that you train it so that um you can control their size this breed in particular really appreciates a strong leader they're very very loyal dogs and they really like very clear Direction so if you're somebody who has good leadership skills or wants to have good leadership skills and are ready to take on a dog like that I think they would be a great choice next is the Beagle now beagles are also quite a nice little breed we don't see a lot of them in classes in terms of um family pets these days they were originally
bred as a scent dog and um they're still being used for that to this day they would hunt rabbit um they've also been very very helpful in Scent detection so something that's really great about the Beagle is they're a really nice size they're not too big they're not too small typically they're a very healthy breed in fact beagles have been used for different testings because they are such a generally healthy type breed in in all ways something to be aware of with the Beagle though is they have a very distinct bark or howl sometimes we
call it a [Music] b when I hear that sound I don't even have to look I instantly know it's a beagle because of the sound it makes which probably is why they make such good scent dogs because they make it very very obvious um I think beagles would be uh a fairly good family pet uh for people they have you know about a medium energy they can be pretty smart they also can be a little bit more in on the independent side I mean they were bred to go off into the forest and hunt you
know without somebody directing them every step of the way so they will go and do things a little bit more on their own which makes training them a little bit more challenging but if you're somebody who perhaps live in an apartment and don't need your neighbors listening to the dog then perhaps it would not be the best dog for you but if you don't live in a confined space and you have you know area backyard or something that you have space and time to you know exercise the dog adequately it could definitely be a great
dog for you the next breed is a bulldog now in terms of Bulldogs there's all kinds of different brands of Bulldogs we already talked about the Frenchie but we also have American Bulldog we have English bulldog bulog British Bulldog the one I feel that they are referring to is the English Bulldog style nowadays the Bulldog is used more as a companion dog but way back in the day they used to be used as like bull bait they're like the big tough looking dogs that you know aren't really going to go anywhere very fast obviously that's
not what they're used for nowadays they're just like sort of big potatoes um that don't really do a whole lot they are they can be really really nice dogs very very sweet dogs I actually um was very fond of one from in classes a long time ago uh and his name was slim which I thought was the cutest name for a Bulldog ever we also had one named bean bag which also they just can come up with the best names for these dogs they are smart dogs they you know they can learn very very well
uh but they are a little bit more on the slower side and the thing that you do need to be careful about with them is they are a brachy spyic breed so with those squished and noses they sometimes have some uh breathing issues um bulldogs also have had some hip plasia in their lines in the past as well and there are some European countries that it's actually illegal to breed them due to their health concern so those are some things that you definitely want to be careful of I think the Bulldog could potentially be a
great family pet the dogs uh do not require a lot of exercise so um if you don't don't have a lot of time to exercise your dog it might be a breed worth choosing you do need to keep um their breathing in mind though obviously it doesn't mean that the dog can sit around doing nothing all day do need to exercise them for that uh for them to be healthy but certainly the exercise isn't going to make or break their energy level in the house the people who may not want to get a bulldog would
be people who are looking to be more active with their dog if you're looking to hike if you're looking to you know go for runs if you're looking to pay fetch if you're looking to do anything active um I don't think the Bulldog would be a very safe or Healthy Choice the next is the dash end or the dend or the wiener dog basically these are one of the cutest little dogs alive and um even cuter as a puppy now these dogs were originally bred to burrow and Chase Badgers um out of small holes they've
also been bred to hunt rabbits as well I would say nowadays they are very much a companion dog this is actually one of the McAn family's favorite breeds even though we have never owned one my father has always said that even when he retires he wants to get a wiener dog because they are known as very good companions but um not only are they cute they're actually quite intelligent little dogs as well and we've had a lot of students in class be very very successful with them because they're smart they like to learn they're motivated
they're sweet they're snuggly they are definitely uh a type of dog that I would recommend uh for lots of people something that you should know about them though because they are small and they have a very long back you do have to be careful with them in terms of what they do athletically coming from a sport background doc or Wier dogs sometimes have a harder time um navigating you know big obstacles and things like that so if you're like an advent hiker or you have like a bunch of stairs in your house or things like
that it might not be the best option for you they do have tons of energy they love to play and and do things like that um but their long back does pose um some problems as they get older so something to be aware of so if you were somebody that um would maybe have a hard time bending over to reward the dog for training or um you wanted to be doing a lot of hiking or you had a sore back things like that this breed might be a little bit more challenging to train because they
are very very small uh and low to the ground but if you're somebody who's looking for a great companion dog that would be quite good with kids that could be a great family dog and would be up for a good time anytime I think a a daxon would be great for you next up the poodle now if you know me you know that I quite love poodles but I am quite partial to the toy poodle and it just says poodle here and you may not know this but there's several different sizes and versions of poodle
there's the standard poodle there's a sort of a medium siiz poodle miniature poodle they call them and then there's also a toy poodle as well now along with the different size of poodles you also have everything under the sun that has been bred with a poodle you have Burna Doodles you have Goldie poos of course you have labber Doodles you have bee shampoos cavapoos um Bor poos I don't I can't even think of them all what other whatever poos that there are there's literally a million if there's different styles of poos that you can think
of feel free to enlighten me in the comments below something that you should know about them is they were originally bred to hunt game and bring game out of the water they're water dogs that's why um you know when poodles are cut with those fancy Cuts it's not just to look like poofy and cutesy and you know stylistic and fancy um it actually is specifically designed to make them uh fast swimmers and the hair that's left on them in those specific areas is to keep those parts of their body warm their hips and their shoulders
and um you know their ankles their ears the top of their head all of those things needed to be kept warm while they were going in and out of the water all the time now of course now in today's day and age um we just see the fancy poodle cut and we think like oh that's so wild and crazy um but there was actually intention to it back in the day now I'm a little bit surprised in a way that poodles are you know this far down the list because they're in my opinion one of
the smartest breeds around and we have had people do very very well with poodles in class they are a breed that quite loves to work their problem Sol solving skills are exceptional um I have a toy poodle and I can tell you for a fact um you know I have bordes and toy poodle and her problem solving skills are absolutely excellent in comparison to the bicol which I'm used to they are very loyal dogs and they're also the type of dog that is prone to being attached to one person in the home typically they're a
little bit more on the aloof side so they're not necessarily the super friendly like jump all over everybody type of of breed in my experience they kind of hone in on on one person which can be good or bad depending on whether you like that um the thing that's challenging about a poodle is also that they're so intelligent and we see a lot of poodles that think a lot faster than their human does and for that reason there can be some struggles there um they also can be very uh confident especially in more standard uh
breeds um very confident very full of themselves they require somebody that can really um you know give them the direction that they need uh but they're very creative they um are excellent um athletic dogs as well I will say the one thing that I don't like about my poodle that might actually prevent me from getting one again would be the haircuts and again this is personal preference some people love the haircuts and they have no problem with the haircuts me I find it really annoying I just really find it's hard to keep up on it
um so I just have her in like a boring puppy cut all of the time people can really have a lot of uh fun with it but they do require a lot of grooming on a regular basis so you definitely need to be ready for that if the poodle is something that you uh would consider getting next on the list is a German Shepherd dog so German Shepherd now I will start off by saying that I think that this is a wonderful breed and when they are in the right role they are fantastic they are
great police dogs they are great dogs in a lot of Senses the issue that I have is not with them it's with 99% of people that decide to get one that should not have one very rarely do we see Shepherds in class match with people who I think should actually have a Shepherd they are a lot of dog they are big they can be very stimulated by motion they can be a little bit skittish sometimes um and uh you can hear them coming from a mile away if they're Barky and Loud um and usually it's
you know a young family or it's an older older couple that perhaps maybe have picked the dog because they want it as a companion or protection and it's just blatantly too much dog for most people and unfortunately I think that it gives the German Shepherd a bad rap because a lot of the time when we see them in classes people really really struggle with them um and I don't feel it's the German Shepherd's fault I think sometimes they're just paired with people um and families in situations where it's really just not the right fit so
what is a good fit for a German shepherd German Shepherds are um as I said very intelligent they also have a lot of energy and they require a lot of attention and um they need a job just like a lot of the working dogs out there they are not really designed to like lay around the house and um you know just go for a couple walks a day they really require a lot more than that they're also big powerful dogs so if you somebody who isn't that strong or wouldn't be able to have good control
over a large breed dog without a lot of training and technique they could be a dog that you struggle with so again I think the the the breed as a whole is a very good one um I do think over the years it has been bred um a lot so that its shape and body has really Chang and there's a lot of hit problems and things like that in um you know ver versions of the breed that have been overbred over time but if you get a really good well-bred German Shepherd they can be really
lovely in my opinion based on the hundreds and hundreds and hundreds that I've seen I would not recommend them to be a regular family pet I don't think that they're a good fit you need to be somebody who's ready to do something with the dog um it needs to have a job maybe you're involved in you know a dog sport of some of some sort that would be a better option uh in my opinion next up is the good old golden retriever now this um this is a great breed for sure this is a super
popular breed it has been a popular family uh dog for years and years and years and I can understand why typically speaking they are very Cooperative dogs um typically you know on the friendly more friendly side they can be great family pets they also can be active you can hike with them you can bike with them you can do all kinds of um you know sportier things with them as well they typically like the water they're good for the cottage all of that kind of stuff um the only thing not going for them is the
fact that they have longer fur which nowadays people don't like as much but typically they're wonderful wonderful wonderful dogs in my opinion things to look out for they uh have been bred over the years to be a little bit more on the softer side and in my experience I have actually seen in the last 10 years or so a lot more possessive issues with them because they're sort of these soft dogs that are kind of lacking confidence a little bit but at the same time uh energetic and you know we have had like bone possession
food possession things like that in uh goldens which originally years ago was very surprising being that they are very popular family dog um so something just to to look out for it is important that you get um one that is confident easygoing but they are quite quite intelligent dogs they love to work they like to uh be active with the family and typically speaking as long as you're not getting a golden from like field lines they can come with a pretty nice off Button as well if you're looking to get a golden retriever I would
suggest it would be somebody who is going to leave a little bit more lead more of an active lifestyle golden as a rule can have some hip issues and uh they typically tend to be very very overweight I think most family dogs do though because people are just petting them and giving them treats all day um so they need to be moving around they need to be kept fit and light so that we're not putting extra strain on their hips that's really really important um but typically speaking they would be a lovely choice for um
for an active family and especially a family that has children as well next we have the labrador retriever now this is another one that comes in lots of different shapes and sizes and colors there's a lot of similarities uh between a lab and a golden in terms of um how great they are as a family pet in my experience there can be a wide range of energy level for the golden but also specifically for the lab and sometimes the energy level can be um related to the color of of lab as well now this isn't
necessarily set in stone but from our experience we would find we would the LA yellow lab as the calest although lots of them aren't super calm um then the black lab and then the craziest most rambunctious would be the chocolate lab um again we've seen lots of colors that you know are completely opposite to what I've just stated but typically speaking that sort of what we joke about as dog trainers is is the change in the color um Labs can be really really nice again same comment I made with a golden retriever because they're such
a common family dog they tend to be be uh treated as more of a companion without um getting a lot of regular exercise they're often very very overweight because they're overfed and um that can lead to a ton of health problems um hip dysplasia and arthritis and things like that so um when you're getting these types of breeds it's super important that you make special effort to keep them light um lightweight so that they live a super long healthy life that's going to be really important Labs typically have a very nice nature that's why they
make such great family pets but they also are ready for a good time if you're have somebody who wants to do a lot of hiking or biking or um boating or anything active that you would want a dog to be able to come along um with you a lab would be a great choice they're pretty hearty dogs um typically they're pretty stable as well um just a lovely dog all around but just keep in mind they do come in a ton of different energy levels so you want to make sure that you look into that
before you get that puppy to make sure that it's going to be well suited for the energy level of yourself and your family before I tell you what the top uh top dog is I want to just speak about the fact that I have this perfect little angel dog right beside me who is a bordoli and I am very offended that the bordoli did not make the top 10 list um I say that a bit tongue and- cheek because I also know enough to say that a borol absolutely should not be in the top 10
list in terms of the most popular family dog and if you guys have have any breeds that you guys have that is I haven't talked about that you'd like to learn a little bit more about uh make sure you post that in the comments below and perhaps we can make a video and I can share my experience with the breed of that you might have coming in as the number one breed on the most popular list is the French Bulldog or we affectionally call it the Frenchie now I can't say that I'm particularly surprised by
this because there are so so many Frenchies out there and I think one of the main reasons is they are so freaking adorable Frenchie puppies might be one of the cutest puppies I have ever seen in my whole life now Frenchies are a cool breed um they are uh they're quite lovely they have a really cute and Sweet Disposition um and they are originally bred as a companion dog so even though some of the other Bulldog breeds um were bred for um you know pit fighting and bull baiting and things like that this particular style
of bulldog the French Bulldog um obviously originating from France uh was bred all the way back from the 1800s as a companion dog um and they are just that they are really a great household dog um they can be energetic energetic enough that they do still require um exercise they're not just like a lay around all day type of dog but they can do that which is why they have a good balance between the two I think that they would make a great dog for a lot of people now things to keep in mind about
them is again they have that brachy spyic uh type of uh squishy nose which does sometimes lend to um some breathing issues maybe not as um bad as the Bulldog or Boston Terrier or things like that but something to keep in mind so again I think that they would be a great choice for the average person they are typically very friendly with other dogs and and other people that's why they're a great companion dog um you just have to be ready for some of the um limitations that they might have in terms of their health
you heard me talk a lot about the importance of leadership in today's video so if you want to learn a little bit more about that make sure you check out that video right there and if you already know the breed that you want but you want to learn about how to pick the perfect puppy watch me go through that exact same progress in this video right there on that note I'm kale happy training
