- Do you know what this is? - A beetle. - That's right.
Do you know what this one is? - A spider. - You're very good.
Some people call them bugs but what's the proper name? - Insects. - Isn't she great?
Hello. - Hi. - What is your name?
- Clara. - And I'm Alice. I'm very happy to meet you.
Ooh I love your skirt. - I just went to ballet. I got two stamps today which means I did a good job dancing and a good job listening.
- Wonderful. - How old are you? - 101.
(gasps) Do you know anybody who's that old? - No. Where are you from?
- Well originally I was born in Philadelphia which is a big city in Pennsylvania. - I was born in New York City. - Oh you were.
So you're born in the east too. - Yeah. Like what did things look like in the old days?
- There were not any trucks. They had wagons and horses pulled them. - So, like, if I wanted to go to Hawaii from Seattle, I would have to let horses pull me all the way over there?
- No. If you wanted to go to Hawaii in the old days you would have to get on a ship. - Did you have forks or knives in the old days?
- Forks and knives? Oh sure. And spoons.
- Was it hard being a girl back then? - Yes, I really wished I was a boy. - Why?
- It's really hard to be a girl in the old days. They didn't have slacks or pants for girls. We had to wear skirts and stockings, even in the coldest weather.
- Girls couldn't wear pants? - That's true. - That is not fair.
- No. - Do you have a cell phone? - No.
I have a landline. - Do you have a computer? - Oh I have a computer and I write books.
Could I show you my books? I bet you'd like to see them? - Yes please.
- Here's one called Wonder Cat Rusty. And it tells all about my kitty. - I'm sorta scared of cats because they scratch sometimes.
- But this was a lovely sweet cat. And here he is taking a nap. Now isn't that nice?
- He's cute. - He was lovely. So do you have brothers and sisters?
- I have a brother. - Is he younger or older? - He is two and a half so I'd say he's younger.
- Uh huh. - Do you have any siblings? - I had a brother but he died long, long time ago.
- A person in my family died. It's my great grandfather. - Did you get to say goodbye to him?
- Yeah. He was fun. We still have a picture of him up on our mantle to remind us of when I was playing with him.
- That's wonderful. Pictures are so helpful, aren't they? - Yeah.
They help me remember the ones I still love. - Right. - What's the secret to living a long life?
- Being happy, working hard. I made friends and talk to people. And we go on trips.
And we get exercise. And all of those things make you live a long time. - Yeah.
I like playing out side. - I do too. - Thank you Alice.
- Have a wonderful life. I'm very proud of you.
