hey everyone you know the planet Earth is home to a vast variety of climates from tropical rainforests to arid deserts however some places on Earth experience extreme cold temperatures that make life incredibly challenging so for today's video I'm gonna count down the 15 coldest cities in the world number 15 Russia their coyans Russia is a town of extremes it holds the world record for the hottest temperature ever recorded north of the Arctic Circle which was 100. 4 degrees fahrenheit as well as the coldest temperature ever recorded in Asia which was negative 90 degrees fahrenheit as you can guess Winters here are anything but Pleasant from a temperature standpoint the average monthly temperature in rohoyansk is negative 48. 5 degrees Fahrenheit the town has an extreme sub-arctic climate and it doesn't see much cloud cover which adds to its extremely cold weather the town along with omyakan is considered the northern pole of cold the poles of cold are the locations in both the northern and southern hemisphere where the lowest air temperatures have been recorded in fact Greenland and Antarctica are the only other two places on the planet that have recorded temperatures lower than omiacan and vercoinsk the area is ripe with temperature inversions because of the cold and dense air of the Siberian area on high pooling and deep Hollows and along with its record-breaking cold snaps for hoyask has the highest temperature range in the world at 189 degrees Fahrenheit or higher there's only about 1300 people that called this cold place home this town does have an airport though as well as a center for raising reindeer of course the extreme cold can be very dangerous and experience residents know well enough when it's simply too cold to go outside number 14.
utkevic or Barrow United States anything located near the Arctic Circle is going to be cold so it's no surprise that utkyovic formerly known as Barrow with its close proximity to the Arctic Circle is one of the coldest cities on the planet utkevic is the northernmost city in the U. S and one of the northernmost cities in the world and it's situated in Alaska now of course Alaska has a reputation of having some pretty cold Winters but when it comes to the crown for the coldest well that's utkivic it's got the lowest average temperature of all Alaskan cities the cold is exacerbated by high winds which can blow through the town at speeds of 60 miles an hour causing whiteout conditions and yet because the city is so far north the Sun stays below the Horizon for 65 days every year utkavek only has around 120 days per year where the temperature is above freezing and record lows here have reached as low as negative 56 degrees Fahrenheit the climate is classified as a tundra and the winters are so cold they can be dangerous to those not prepared for those frigid temperatures and freezing winds but if you can stomach the cold utkivic offers up some pretty spectacular opportunities to see the Northern Lights tourists can also behold the beauty of the surrounding Tundra which stretches for 200 miles to the South the city covers just over 21 square miles and has a population of only 5 000 people number 13 Harbin China Harbin is the eighth most populous Chinese city as well as the largest city of the heilongjang province so it's a little surprising that it's also one of the coldest cities on Earth with an urban population that exceeds 6 million people the original name of Harbin was Manchu which means a place for drying fish the city was established in 1898 and was originally inhabited with a flush of immigrants from the Russian Empire the city was also once a fashion Mecca in the 1920s the latest fashions from Paris and Moscow reached here before Shanghai so they had a little bit of a hand up when it came to the latest trends though Harbin also has another important characteristic it's known as the ice City Harmon has very cold Winters but instead of shying away from the cold this vibrant City Embraces it Harmon holds an ice sculpture Festival every winter called the international ice and snow festival and is known worldwide for its spectacular display of glowing ice sculptures Harbin also entices tourists with a plethora of outdoor wintry activities so much so that it was voted the top tourist city in China in 2004 by the China National tourism Administration Harbin is also a hub for scientific research and sits among the top 100 cities in the world for that Winters here are long and dry with daily averages in January sitting at 0. 3 degrees Fahrenheit and dropping as low as negative 35 and snow can cover the ground for half of the year in Harbin number 12 yakotusk Russia located about 280 miles south of the Arctic Circle yakotus is the capital city of Russia's Saka Republic the average temperature here in January is negative 41 degrees Fahrenheit so this frigid city is often considered the coldest city in the world not taking into account smaller towns and Villages the population here hovers around 350 000 people which is a lot considering the city's harsh climate the average annual temperature is only 17.
6 degrees Fahrenheit but the city has hit a record low of negative 83 in the past this city is the largest city in the world located on continuous permafrost the average winter temperatures here give the honor of the coldest winter temperatures for any City its size or larger on Earth although to some that might not be an honor to brag about from November to March the city has never in its history recorded a single day with a temperature above freezing the lowest temperature ever recorded here was negative 83. 9 degrees Fahrenheit and it was recorded on February 5th 1891. because the city sits on continuous permafrost most of the houses in this crazy cold City are built on concrete piles however despite this extreme cold yakutus has all the amenities you'd expect from a large city including art galleries and Opera and Ballet Theater sporting facilities and the only museums in the world dedicated to permafrost so when the weather becomes unbearably cold the residents can hunker down and remain safely indoors while still enjoying some entertainment number 11.
vostok Station Antarctica okay so vostok station isn't exactly a city or a town but there are people there and it is the coldest place on the planet so it deserves a mention the station is a Russian research station and is located in Inland Prince Elizabeth land fostok station has the lowest reliably measured natural temperature on Earth which is an unbelievable negative 128. 6 degrees Fahrenheit on July 21st of 1983. it also reported the coldest wind chill at negative 200 degrees Fahrenheit on August 24 2005.
the station was founded in 1957 and is at the southern pole of cold the name vostok is Russian for East and a lot of the research carried out there involves ice core drilling and magnetometry the population here is 30 people in the summer and around 15 in the winter and the station is operational all year round despite this harsh climate the station has Sub-Zero temperatures all year round and only receives about 0. 87 inches of precipitation as snow so not only clearly is it one of the coldest places on the planet it's also one of the driest and oddly enough it's also one of the sunniest places in the world although Sun hardly equates to warm at vostok the station is the coldest weather station in operation however the now inactive Plateau station which is located on the central Antarctic Plateau is sometimes given credit for having the lowest recorded temperature although it's been disputed and not deemed reliable so in terms of reliable lowest temperatures it's more stock for the win number 10. Astana Kazakhstan Astana is a modern city and the capital of Kazakhstan and has a January monthly average of 6.
4 degrees Fahrenheit and while that temperature might not have you freezing your socks off the city has recorded extreme lows that have dipped down to negative 61 degrees Fahrenheit although that's certainly not the norm in fact the city is so cold that its river is usually Frozen from mid-november to early April unlike some of the other smaller towns on this list Astana is pretty large with a population of over a million in fact it's the second largest city in the country after almati this city underwent a modernization plan after it became the capital city in 1997 so therefore it boasts a lot of futuristic buildings skyscrapers sporting venues and other tourist attractions however as the second coldest national capital in the world anyone who visits this modern city in the winter months better Dawn some pretty serious winter gear number nine sagni Quebec although a lot of people widely consider Winnipeg Manitoba to be the coldest city in Canada sagne in Quebec has some really cold weather the coldest temperature ever recorded in sagni was negative 49 degrees Fahrenheit which took place on February 5th 1916. there are on average 47 days per year where the temperature drops below negative 4 degrees Fahrenheit and seven times per year where it hits below negative 22. low temps are caused in part by The Frigid Waters of the labrador current and the Hudson Bay as well as the Northerly location the city has a population of just over 160 thousand and it's about 120 miles north of Quebec City sagne is divided into three boroughs and the city itself is located in a depression in the Canadian Shield called the sagni graben this location gives it a warmer climate than its surrounding areas which allowed for it to be inhabited the city often claims the title of Canada's coldest city although it depends on what metrics are being used such as cold as days coldest annual temperatures or record-breaking cold so the title is sometimes contested although sagne has the coldest days with the lowest maximum temperature amongst all Canadian cities number eight Fairbanks Alaska Fairbanks Alaska is the largest city in the interior region of Alaska as well as the second largest in the state but those titles don't exactly come with a large population since Alaska as a whole isn't very populated the population of Fairbanks City proper is just over 32 000 so although it's the second largest in the state it's still not very large by most standards perhaps maybe because Fairbanks is so cold the city is very far north and it's known for having long snowy Winters heavy snowfall here is pretty much a given from October to February but it's not uncommon to see snow from March to may as well during the winter the average temperatures about negative 20 degrees Fahrenheit but the lowest recorded temperature is much lower than that at negative 66 degrees Fahrenheit the city sits at the bottom of the Tanana Valley and its location causes cold air to accumulate around the site the warmer air rises to the tops of the hills just north of Fairbanks but the cold air lingers at the bottom of the valley wrapping the city in frigid temperatures Fairbanks is widely considered to be the coldest city in the United States the nights are long and dark in the winter on the shortest day of the year December 21st the Sun is up for only 3 hours and 41 minutes although Civil Twilight extends the actual daylight hours to about six and although it's extremely cold Fairbanks offers some stunning surrounding landscapes in fact Fairbanks is the epitome of a winter wonderland with its lovely white snow set against the sky illuminated by the Northern Lights number seven snag Canada Canada of course is home to some pretty cold cities and towns especially since Canada extends pretty far north so cities and towns are in constant competition to snag the next record-breaking cold temperature but snag Canada has snagged the coldest temperature ever recorded in Canada with a remarkable negative 81.
4 degrees Fahrenheit now truth be told there are quite a few other towns and cities in Canada that have broken records too including Winnipeg which is notoriously cold in the winter and has the record for the most consecutive days below freezing Yellowknife which also has some intensely cold weather and Eureka Nunavut which is considered the coldest place in Canada based on its yearly average of negative three degrees Fahrenheit but snag located in the Yukon Territory Takes the Cake when it comes to the record for coldness day the town was first settled during the Klondike Gold Rush and although it was never really a big town it once was fairly prosperous the village is located in the Valley of the White River and along with being a gold fresh settlement it was also once the site of a military Airfield however the gold dried up and the Airfield closed and people hit the road probably to find somewhere warmer to live snags at the cold-breaking record in 1947 and although no one lives in Snag anymore it can really blame him the legacy of the coldest town in Canada lives on although technically it's not the coldest town in Canada as far as average yearly temperatures go it's just home to the coldest temperature ever recorded in Canada number six hell Norway Norway is cold with some pretty extreme temperatures the coldest part of Mainland Norway is the finmark plain while the coldest temperature ever recorded was in karashok at negative 60 degrees Fahrenheit and while the name of this town might conjure up images of raging fires and endless heat hell Norway is anything but the town is easily one of the coldest towns on Earth with temperatures often dipping down to negative 13 degrees Fahrenheit so yeah hell literally does freeze over here the town is small and quaint with a train station a grocery store a gas station and a retirement home although retiring in hell isn't exactly what most people dream of for their retirement the town's population is just over 1500 and the town hosts a Blues Festival every summer and although the name of the town doesn't exactly have positive connotations for most native English speakers the name of the town actually means luck to Norwegians the town wasn't named for being lucky though the name really comes from the nearby overhanging Cliffs called helier in Old Norse in any case hell is a really cold town with seemingly endless pun opportunities which I won't get into here number five International Falls Minnesota the United States is known for a lot of things but being really cold really isn't one of them so it might shock you to see an American city appear in this list that isn't in Alaska truth be told this little town is right up there with the coldest of them all International Falls in Minnesota United States It's a Small Town known for copious amounts of snow and record-breaking coals during the winter the average snowfall is around 73 inches and because the town is so cold the snow really doesn't have a chance to melt so it's not uncommon for there to be five feet or more of permanent snow from December to March as such International Falls has earned the nickname the icebox of the nation and seeing as how the town spends an average of 109 days per year with a temperature below 32 degrees Fahrenheit it is a well-earned nickname International Falls was founded in 1870 and covers an area of about 6. 4 square miles it's got a population of around 5 800 people and during January the town celebrates its icebox status with its annual icebox days number four Ulan Batar Mongolia Ulan Batar in Mongolia holds the title of the world's coldest national capital the city is located 4 430 feet above sea level it's known for its extreme weather in the summer the temperature can soar to 102 degrees Fahrenheit but in the winter months temperature drops to a frigid negative 44 degrees Fahrenheit the city itself boasts a lot of stunning cultural sites from Modern Art Galleries to magnificent Tibetan style Buddhist temples it's in the Tulu Valley and borders on the bog Khan UL National Park the city was once a nomadic Buddhist center but in the late 18th century it became a permanent site despite these frigid temperatures a lot of students live in Ulan Batar and attend one of the 13 National universities or 75 private colleges the high concentration of students contributes to the young demographic of Ulan Batar it is one of the youngest cities in the world with more than 60 percent of its residents being under the age of 35.
