hi can you explain who you are and what you do my name is alexis murphy and i am a senior account executive at a marketing agency called momentum worldwide and what does that mean um our agency specializes in experiential marketing so live events and sponsorships which is obviously struggling right now so we've just transitioned from live events into virtual events uh and what does it mean to be a marketer what does it mean to be a marketer um i think marketing is going through something really interesting right now where you know you had sort of
the old like mad vanguard of advertising and now it really means you know understanding a lot of points of view um being sort of a generalist in terms of understanding you know people's different backgrounds what people might be interested in what might catch somebody's eye and just listening to a lot of people's opinions um which isn't something that you know traditional advertising tended to do so it's actually a pretty exciting time to be involved in that right now and how did you get into what you do um so i went to college as an english
major actually i loved english it was always my favorite subject and i never quite knew what i wanted to do after college but i knew that you know i loved reading and writing i loved music i worked at the radio station in college and i wanted to sort of find a good medium of all of that um so after college i was doing a couple temp jobs and a friend of mine from the radio station was working at the agency that i work at now and she actually referred me for a job in communications that
was entry level for american express so i was working sort of in their entertainment department um doing email communications for them and then sort of worked my way into the event space for for amex and what's the coolest part about your job um the coolest part of my job is or used to be before covid traveling to music festivals and being on site um for our activation so if you've ever been to a music festival and you walk by sort of a branded tent or a lounge or you know something of that nature that's what
we would create um and build from the ground up so we would be there for basically an entire month and we would be there to run the entire thing so i love traveling for that i love being in that atmosphere um now that we've transitioned to virtual events i think the best part about it is dealing with artist talent teams which is something that i've always wanted to do and it's you know always been a little bit inaccessible but now that artists can't tour or can't perform this is sort of you know a new territory
for them too so everybody is learning everybody is kind of like creating a new standard as they go so that's been super interesting as well what advice would you give to other students who are really interested in humanities english history um i would say if you can read and write you can pretty much go in to i don't want to say any field but a lot of fields um and you know it will be a valuable skill for the rest of your life so don't be discouraged by not having a very specialized degree if that
is the route that you choose to take just understand that it might take a little bit longer to find to find your path and where do you currently live um i live in brooklyn and what's your favorite part about living in new york city um i love living in new york city because even though you know you can't really like go out and do a lot of things right now it's still a very vibrant vibrant community um that you know you always meet a lot of interesting people there's always places to walk around always things
to do and yeah it's just a really good place to live do you work remotely or from the office during non-coveted life during non-coveted life worked in the office and now everybody works remote um and has made a surprisingly really good transition because our you know in office format was always very much collaborative everybody's in a board room tossing ideas around and somehow people have managed to make that happen from home so that's pretty cool and what other advice do you have for upcoming seniors and juniors about college and then beyond um advice would be
learning about what you like and what you're good at is just as important as learning about what you don't like and what you're not good at um and and you know just because you have an experience and you realize oh you know i hated that or i thought i would love it and i wasn't good at it like that is just as important as understanding what you are passionate about because you wouldn't find that out otherwise and your time is valuable your thoughts are valuable and so are your skills so um you know that takes
time to figure out great thanks
