her husband and my wife if not for her I would still be oblivious to what was happening right under my nose in my own house 3 days earlier Sally had informed me Mr winter I have a Mrs Mason in the lobby to see you she said that her husband Sam works with your wife and that it's urgent she speaks with you thank you Sally did she say what this was about no sir she just said it was personal tell her I'll be there in a few minutes I had a bad feeling about this why would

a woman I had only met once at a company Christmas party be coming to see me about a personal issue it was only 11:00 a.m. and I had done nothing all day but put out fires and now this what's worse is that it's only Monday maybe it was time to scrap my rule of no drinking until after 5:00 p.m. I walked into the lobby and saw pretty brunette sitting on the sofa Mrs Mason I'm Jason Winters please come back to my office and we can talk thank you but please call me Cathy she said as

okay last Thursday I was in town running some errands and decided to surprise Sam at the office to see if he wanted to grab lunch but when I got there he wasn't in his office I asked around and was told that he left for lunch around 11:00 a.m. I thought that was strange since I had packed him a lunch that morning like I do every day so thinking he might be running some errands I tried to call him to see if he wanted to meet me somewhere but he didn't answer I could see tears forming

in the corners of her eyes as she paused for a moment at this point I knew I needed to get her through this story before she broke down I handed her a box of tissues from the table and asked asked so where does Annie come into this she wiped her eyes and nose before continuing when he still hadn't returned my call by the time I got home I started to worry because that just wasn't like him then it hit me about 6 months ago when our oldest son started driving I downloaded one of those apps

was to install three cameras each in the master bedroom room the guest bedroom and the great room Bill promised he could set up the cameras to provide a 360° view of everything in those rooms the cameras would be motion activated and capable of automatically adjusting to capture clear footage at any time day or night the cameras transmitted a signal to a receiver that bill installed in my attic and I could monitor the feed through a phone app the video would also be saved to the cloud in case I needed it later now all we had

fight and that you stormed out of the house and won't answer her calls that doesn't sound like you so I got scared that something might have happened well that didn't take long I thought Savannah I can assure you that nothing has happened to me what your mother failed to tell you is that we were arguing because she decided I wasn't good enough for her so she found someone else and started sneaking him into the house so it wasn't exactly a fight it was more like I'm divorcing her and I never want to see her again

now she thinks she can explain it all away if I'll just listen to her but it'll be a cold day in Hell before I listen to any more of her lies I suddenly realized I was raising my voice at my daughter and paused to catch my breath it was then that I heard her crying on the other end well I obviously didn't handle that very well did I I told myself I managed to get my emotions in check and explain everything to Savannah making sure she understood that this didn't have to come between her and

her mother this was between Annie and me and I wanted her to maintain her relationship with both of us after I hung up with Savannah I called Mark and Jeff to let them know what was going on unfortunately for Annie they both inherited my temper and they were both really upset with her they'll eventually make peace with her but she will face a lot of Anger from them before everything settles down the next few weeks passed by fairly quietly I buried myself and work in the gym trying to stay too busy to think about the

chaos my life had become my only social contacts outside of work were my kids and Cathy Mason I talk to the kids several times each week the boys kept the conversations focused on school and sports while Savannah would catch me up on what was happening with her though she also tried to bring up Annie who according to my daughter was not doing well at all Kathy Mason and I met for lunch every Monday it might not have been the best idea given our circumstance ances but we both needed someone to talk to someone who understood

what we were going through I was moving Full Speed Ahead with the divorce but Kathy was having some second thoughts it was different for her she still had children at home and a divorce would be much Messier for her and Sam she often used me as a sounding board for the decision she was facing on the last day before her deadline Roger informed me that Annie had finally signed the papers and returned them to his office now it was just a matter of waiting the 3 months for a court date to finalize the agreement Annie

had only one request that I let her talk to me before we go to court despite my objections Roger made it clear that things would go much smoother in court if I met with her he said that most judges wouldn't look favorably on a spouse who was ending a 25-year marriage without any counseling or at least some honest discussions between the two parties I finally agreed to meet with her but only when I was ready over the next month I reverted back to my old habits before I met Annie I worked hard worked out like

a madman and played hard my business required me to be out of town a couple of nights each week and most of those nights included dinner and drinks usually at a bar after work I am a creature of habit so this was a pattern I had followed for years but normally after a couple of drinks and some conversations with whoever was sitting near me at the bar I would head back to my room and call Annie and the kids there would sometimes be some harmless flirting with other patrons but it never went beyond that I'm

not proud to admit it but since Annie shattered our marriage I found myself drinking more than I should when I was on the road the harmless flirting started to get out of hand I ended up getting involved with a few women I met while traveling some were single and some were married but I didn't care I was furious with Annie for what she did and I hated Sam for involving himself in my marriage now I had allowed myself to do the same thing to others I was searching for anything to make the hurt go away

a cab to our hotel it was one of my favorites located across from Central Park and our room had a view of the park it was just after 5:00 p.m. when we checked into the hotel we quickly unpacked and freshened up for dinner our reservations were for 7:00 p.m. and the restaurant was only a 10-minute walk from the hotel so we had plenty of time time Cathy was standing by the window staring out at the city while I tied my tie when I walked up beside her she turned and wrapped her arms around me well

promised to keep her posted on Mark and we agreed to talk later in the week we both needed a little time to process everything that happened in New York and decide where to go from here I found my car and headed to the hospital to check on Mark this was going to be really hard I was about to see Annie for the first time in months and I really didn't know what to say or how to act I was also going to have to face Savannah and explain why her father was in New York in

a hotel room with a woman she didn't know about then suddenly In a Moment of clarity it came to me I needed to put all of that behind me for the moment and focus my attention on my son who needed my immediate care then I would deal with Annie and all of the unresolved issues and feelings when I caught her with Sam I reacted out of anger cutting off all contact with her then I tried to boost my self-esteem by having casual flings while I was traveling I had tried to move on and start a

relationship with Cathy but I still hadn't found any peace it became clear that until I worked through everything with Annie and brought closure to our relationship I could never truly move on I got off the elevator and followed the signs to Mark's room before I opened the door I took a moment to gather my courage I was actually nervous about going in how had it come to the point where I felt uncomfortable seeing my own family asterisk okay Jason get yourself together just go in and be yourself asterisk I took one last breath and opened

huh yeah I laughed I guess I won't have to take Mark along just to keep him from getting jealous but when he's back to normal we'll have to play it cool and ask him to come along too I turned to Mark's bed where he appeared to be asleep Annie was sitting by his side as I knew she would be it was obvious that my presence was making her nervous she hadn't even looked up to acknowledge me if we were going to get through the next few days I knew it was up to me to ease

the tension I walked over to the bed standing beside her so Annie how's our boy not too bad at the moment but he gave us quite the scare yesterday she answered for the next couple of hours we sat around Mark's room reminiscing about the kids growing up and some of the crazy things they did after the initial tension everyone seemed to relax around 700 p.m. I insisted that everyone go home I told Savannah and Jeff to return to school assuring them that either their mom or I would call as soon as Mark was out of

surgery I also urged Annie to go home she looked exhausted and I wasn't ready to be along with her yet the next day Mark's surgery went well and a few days later he was released to go home Annie and I managed to get him settled into his room being back in the house brought back some unpleasant memories but I promised myself I would just suck it up for Mark's sake after he was settled I told him goodbye and that I would stop by to see him tomorrow I was almost out of the house when Annie

stopped me to remind me that I had promised to talk with her about what had happened before our divorce was finalized and that we only had a few weeks left before the court date damn I knew she was right okay I guess I've put this off as long as I can I thought how about a come by on Saturday morning and I'll let you tell me everything you have to say yeah Saturday would work for me how about around 8:00 a.m. I'll fix some breakfast she offered sounds good Annie I'll see you then I spent

the next two days catching up at work and figuring out what I wanted to say on Saturday Cathy and I met for dinner on Friday night and talked about the previous weekend I just wanted to make sure she was all right with everything that had happened and she was we both agreed that neither of us was ready for another serious relationship right now but we also agreed that an occasional date was still on the table just to prove it to ourselves we spent the evening together before she headed home to her boys true to my

her her apology did mean something to me on a certain level but I wasn't sure if I was ready to accept it yet I had forgiven her weeks earlier but that was more for my own sanity I had been so wrapped up in my anger that it was making me ill at times Cathy had convinced me that I needed to forgive Annie helping me understand that forgiving her wasn't about condoning what she did it was about allowing myself to move on with my life when she realized that I wasn't going to respond she decided to

continue also just so you know I've been seeing a counselor for the past couple of months to try to figure out why I did did what I did a lot of this comes from my discussions with her great I thought now comes the part where all of this is somehow my fault or her parents fault or the kids's fault so I sat there for the next hour letting her say everything she wanted to say just as I promised I would it was all a load of excuses of course but I let her speak I'm sure

it made sense to her apparently this all started when the boys left for college she felt lonely and depressed she had spent the past 20 years focusing most of her attention on the children and now they were all gone and didn't need her anymore she had always suffered from mild depression and the kids leaving home only made it worse I was wrapped up in my work and didn't spend much time with her her counselor told her that when children leave home parents must shift their focus from the children and find fulfillment from other people or

activities preferably from their spouse according to her I had my work which I always turned to for fulfillment but she had nothing her job was just a job to her a way to keep busy so she felt bored and lonely and then Sam came along inviting her to lunch she acknowledged that it was wrong but said she was lonely and he was so attentive over a few months their conversations became more personal as they started complaining to each other about me and Kathy then one Wednesday they were at a client function and after a few

too many drinks Sam walked her to her car and kissed her she didn't know why but she kissed him back until guilt stopped her and she pulled away the rest of her story was sadly predictable they kept having lunch they kissed again which led to more physical encounters she swore that it was never about love just loneliness and the way made her feel good about herself feel wanted she didn't enjoy the physical aspect as much as the thrill of doing something she knew was wrong she still loved me and wanted to stay together and work

on our marriage but by by the time she finished I was feeling more frustrated than understanding I took a moment to gather my thoughts before responding so I only have two questions first was this the first time you cheated on me and second have you continued seeing Sam after I left the house what she didn't know was that I already knew the answers I just wanted to see if she would be honest with me oh my God Jason please believe me this was the first and only time that I've cheated I actually believed her I

had hired a private investigator to dig into her in Sam's past Cathy and I had provided access to all of our cell phone and banking information and I gave the investigator access to Annie's personal laptop he found nothing suspicious on any of Annie's devices or our bank accounts until a couple of weeks before she and Sam came to our house for the first time at that point there were tons of late night messages between them okay Annie I guess I believe you I have no reason to think there were any other Affairs now how about

the second question we talked a few times to compare notes on how to handle things with you and Cathy but we haven't actually seen each other since the day that video was recorded well so much for honesty I knew for a fact that she had seen him twice in our house since I left Annie here's my problem I know that's a blatant lie Sam was in this house the first two Friday nights after I left and he stayed here the entire night both times a look of panic spread across her face do you remember Bill
