hello everyone and welcome back to Global Connect this is our second video in this first week of class in which we're going to be talking about being b i n g and last time we talked about Genesis chapter 1 especially the imod de concept of being image bearers of God I want us to look at the second creation account right now which is found in Genesis chapter 2 and I'll be reading beginning in verse 4 I'm going to read verse Verses 4 through 8 and then skip down to verse 18 and I've got two points
to make from this passage on the day Yahweh Elohim notice the difference there Yahweh Elohim made the Earth and Sky when no bush in the field was yet on the earth and all the vegetation of the field had sprung up for Yahweh Elohim had not caused it to rain on the earth and humankind was not there to till the ground but a stream Rose from the Earth to water the whole surface of the ground then Yahweh Elohim formed humans from the dust of the ground and he breathed into their nostrils the breath of life and
humans became living beings now in verse 8 and Yahweh Elohim planted a garden in Eden in the East and he put humans there whom he had formed Yahweh Elohim said this is down in verse 18 it is not good good for the human to be alone I will make a helper as his partner now I want to point out two ideas from these verses right here in Genesis CH 12 recognizing that we've already been told that humans are created in the image of God and our identity is a part of being in God's image whose
are we we're Gods who are we really we're his children we're His Image Bearer okay now it says notice not just Elohim but Yahweh Elohim God is identified as Yahweh and I want to make a point about that what is Yahweh what is that term what does it mean well when you look over in Exodus chapter 3 we see that this is the name that God uses for himself and it's how he identifies himself to Moses in front of the burning bush but who is Yahweh the word Yahweh is built bu on the Hebrew verb
of be or to be so Yahweh is being that's who he is so this being who is God comes and creates humans our whole Essence is is drawn up by being in God who is the being who is God my Hebrew Professor was a wonderful Hebrew professor John Dr John Durham and when he would get to this term Yahweh in the Old Testament he would often translate it as simply is is Elohim is that God is present God is God is being that's who God is and he chooses us to be his image bearers so
we are bearing the presence and the image of God whenever we wherever we go now second thing I want you to notice here is in verse 7 then Yahweh Elohim formed humans from the dust of the ground and he breathed into their nostrils the breath of Y life and human beings became living beings we owe our existence to God the being Mr is the ising one however you want to say that Yahweh okay and we owe our being from him so this kind of a continuation of this idea of being an image Bearer who are
we we are Gods who are we really we are gods and therefore everything else that we do in life should proceed out of that when I was in seminary many many years ago I did an extensive study on the presence of God in the Old Testament and it was based on a book by Kristoff Bart and one of the things that I learned in that study was that how God is always present with his people he's always there even when it seems that he's been he's hiding even when the psalmist cry out God where are
you God is there because God is being and being means that he's present and being means that he is always with us I encourage you to read Psalm 8 uh sometime this week and just think about this Psalm in the context of what we're talking about here who are we what is our identity well according to the creation story both counts of the creation and according to the psalmist in Psalm chapter 8 we are Gods that's who we are and we are crowned with his glory and his honor therefore we need to have a sense
of that as we go throughout our day and go throughout our week thank you
