what's up guys my name is iman gadgy and for the last 30 days i've been taking cold showers now cold showers are often hailed as miracles by celebrities personal trainers and biohackers alike but if there's one thing people love more than cold showers it's making videos about them taking cold showers okay it seems like everyone on youtube has taken cold showers and for a weirdly specific amount of time 30 days so clearly i had to give it a go but before we start i want to make clear what this video is not it is not
an excuse for me to slip in gratuitous footage of me in the shower or accidental nip slips instead i'll be looking to answer three questions question number one why do people take cold showers question number two what happened to me after 30 days of cold showers in question number three should you take cold showers so with no further ado let's get straight into it so why do people take cold showers why after thousands of years of human evolution and more importantly the evolution of indoor plumbing are we subjecting ourselves to cold showers it's uncomfortable and
borderline torture well if you ask scientists they'll tell you that there are two major benefits the first is physical you see cold water causes your body to go into a state of vasoconstriction narrowing blood vessels which makes your heart work harder and like any muscle you use the more you use your heart the stronger it will get leading to improved circulation the drop in temperature especially after exercise can also allow your body to recirculate blood to areas like your stomach and intestines improving your digestion cold showers can also improve your skin hair and overall complexion
the second benefit is mental now if you know anything about me you know that i'm a big fan of things like intermittent fasting and controlled breathing not because of a masochist but because of this word right here hormesis this is what happens when you expose your body to stressors the more you expose your body to small safe doses of these stresses the more you build up a mental resilience and fun fact this is actually the inspiration for kelly clarkson's 2011 hit what doesn't kill you [Music] [Applause] powerful the idea with cold showers is the more
you intentionally put yourself in an uncomfortable situation in this case under freezing water the better you'll be able to deal with what life throws at you so what happened when i took cold showers for 30 days now in a second i'll share my general thoughts with you but before that i want to show you this ring right here it's called an o ring and it measures my sleep my heart rate my body temperature and a plethora of other things so what that means is i actually had some biomarkers to go off of and what did
my bio markers and aura show drum roll please absolutely nothing oh i'm not having this now it was a little disappointing to find that cold showers for 30 days had no actual impact on my sleep my heart rate or my body temperature and in fact my sleep has actually been worse for the last 30 days now this isn't exactly a surprise to me for one thing i had showers earlier in the day so it wasn't realistically going to lead to any meaningful impact on my sleep plus in the last 30 days i've been trying this
new carnivore diet i just moved into my brand new house there's so many different variables that got thrown into the mix it was really hard to just isolate the cold showers specifically it's disappointing but at the end of the day i didn't set out to create a scientific experiment this was something much more personal for me because there was one enormous benefit i felt and that is the mental one as i said earlier cold showers aren't fun and i like to think of myself as hyper masculine and strong-willed but i'll admit getting into a freezing
cold shower every day well it just sucks but every time i got out of the shower i felt a tiny bit better i felt like i'd accomplished something i felt like i'd push my body a bit further and i'll be honest in my day-to-day life i'm way too comfortable as a somewhat successful entrepreneur i'm able to live in a pretty nice place and travel around the world in great comfort and while the last thing i want to do is be ungrateful for what i have it also feels like a bubble a big comfortable bubble isolating
me from the real world it seems silly but sometimes all you need to burst a bubble is a cold shower and after 30 days of cold showers i felt happier i i felt more resilient i felt stronger so now i've answered the first few questions of why would anyone take a cold shower and what happened to me after i took cold showers for 30 days the only question left is should you take cold showers look if you're already into biohacking go ahead try cold showers try intermittent fasting try crazy supplements made from the frozen intestines
of wild mountain goats no god please no no but if you're just starting out it's worth asking what are you trying to achieve you see when it comes to improving your health there's two main things that you need to focus on you see start with low hanging fruits start with the habits in your life that are easier to control if you're feeling anxious or struggling to go to sleep try cutting back on the caffeine if you want to improve your mood start with a 20-minute walk to begin every day you see 80 of your problems
come from 20 of your behavior if you focus on easy wins to start you'll feel a massive benefit which will then just perpetuate itself and you'll be even more encouraged to take even more action the second thing is to be kind to yourself and take it easy see every time i speak to someone who's trying to change their life for the better i will see the same mistake they go too big too fast and hate themselves for it from day one they get up at 5am quick caffeine cold turkey take cold showers quit processed sugar
go vegan work for 12 hours and inevitably fail millions of would-be bio-hackers fail because they've started too quickly remember go slow and be kind to yourself i've said this multiple times now but i can't stress it enough cold showers suck i'm happy i did them but honestly i wouldn't recommend it to everyone i'm a biohacker and i'd like to experiment i like to try everything i can to improve my health and performance and i'll probably keep using cold exposure in conjunction with breathing but you know they aren't magic fixes and if you want to improve
your mental and physical health there are a myriad of other easier ways to start try to wake up earlier cut down on the caffeine you know things like waking up earlier or at least at a consistent time every day cutting back on the caffeine trying to remove processed foods from your diet hey maybe even give intermittent fasting a shot practice some mindfulness and lastly be kind to yourself ladies and gents thank you so much for watching this video let me know about your experience with cold exposure with having cold showers and any other bio hacking
