[Music] what's going on guys Dan Watson learning cameras. com and I've got the Sony a6300 here I've been looking forward to this one for a while just a couple things to get started you can download the actual full resolution raw files JPEG files at my website learning cameras. com there's going to be a link below as well so definitely go check those out you can edit those raw files see these without any impression you can really take a look and see exactly how these files are going to work for you also the video files from this review again they're also going to be available for download so you can download it uncompressed from the website so definitely check those out and if you have any questions or anything information about this definitely hit me up in the comments below also I'm on Facebook Instagram uh also Twitter so those are great places to reach out to me you can go ahead and message me on Facebook or something like that as well if you have any direct questions about these or any other camera or just some of the stuff going on these are some pretty crazy cameras right here under 1,000 bucks for the body alone you get 4k video 24 megapixel some really high-end specs a lot of customization a lot of features from some topend cameras into these brand new autofocus system contrast and phase detection 425 uh points on that one so definitely a force to be reckoned with in this space it's an apsc sensor camera you have a full readout for the 4K video as well High high-end stuff can't go on enough about those but does that mean that this camera is going to be the one for you let's take a look at some of the features how I use this and some of the things that I thought about this camera after spending some time with it and see if your opinion might change one way or the other [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so first I'm going to talk about the photo aspects of the camera and then we'll touch on video a little bit later as a photography camera this is a very interesting model because it sits right in between where we would find like a Nikon d5500 and Nikon d7200 so you're right in between that kind of Semi-Pro market and the consumer Market as far as price is concerned but we're getting the same size sensors we're getting in those and also similar resolutions and the autofocus system has been upgraded to hopefully compete with those so what did I think about it overall the picture quality is unbelievable I think it is a step above what we would see in the Nikon d7200 and you're getting a body that's a lot smaller but still have has most of the features that we would want from a camera like that but let's talk about some of the weak points on here the biggest one for me was ergonomics it was not a fun camera for me to use as a photographer who's coming from a lot of different cameras on the market I was disappointed that Sony just seems to be going somewhere completely different with this camera now this isn't the first one this is obviously a redone of a 6000 and the 6000 is virtually unchanged from this so some of you might know that or be Sony 6000 Shooters and this might might be a big concern to you but I think there's a lot of room for improvement here we have no dial on the front so if you're used to having a front shutter dial it's not there you have one dial here which is kind of an awkward placement and it's not it has a good feel to it but it's not the easiest to get to and then your last dial is going to be this one here and it's my most hated one because if you're spinning this it's very easy to push one of these buttons and the biggest one is if you're pushing one of these buttons it's almost impossible not to spin this so I have this programmed to my aperture and I'm constantly changing my aperture while trying to adjust my ISO and all kinds of stuff like that so this connection to me is just horrible it has not been fun from an ergonomic standpoint you do also have one SD card slot which again kind of puts you a little bit more towards that consumer Market we're dealing with some small batteries here again not that big of an issue for photos you do have a flash on board and we do have the ports you would expect for videographers but we'll talk a little bit more about that later the tilt screen here is good it's not quite as good as the flip out screens but for photography it's okay you can still shoot down you can still shoot up and you get most of your range of motion you need for photographers the other thing is that Sony's lenses they've gotten a lot better but we're still missing some f2.
8 Zoom for apsc cameras and the only f2. 8 Zoom for this market right now is going to be a lens that's over $2,000 which is coming out now it's a new GM f2. 8 Series so we're really missing some options on that one now this is the 18 to 105 F4 lens but it's a little more Geared for video use and I did use it a lot this 50 mm uh also is a great lens on the market it's pretty cheap and it's an f1.
8 it's a little more expensive than the Canon or Nikon f1. 8 but it does have stabilization built into it and that's great because we don't get stabilization built into the body like Sony's other high-end cameras so it's definitely something to think about there now you do have the option of installing one of these this is the metabones E Mount to EF mount for uh for Canon EF lenses onto this I used it quite a bit for photography it's not bad at all you have full aperture control all your electronics pass through and you also have some basic AF performance and I have a video to go a little bit more in depth but the the end result is it's pretty good for single point autofocus it's not as quick as a Sony lens or as accurate as a Sony lens but it's not too bad at all when you're talking about tracking it's a little bit weaker so if you're looking at doing something on the tracking side I definitely side with Sony lenses but it does give you an option to go Canon lens and you can also get it available for Nikon so if you have some other lenses from other systems they can be used on here and you will get some basic AF performance now the overall quality from this camera is astounding it's probably the best apsc camera on the market today in my opinion you have great dynamic range everything looks good on the as far as colors are concerned even low light results perform better than most of the cameras on the market today I had no issues using this at 3200 ISO and even 6,400 ISO and still getting some good usable pictures from that and that's mo more than I would say about a lot of apsc cameras right here I'm used to full frame and generally that's what I would need to be able to shoot a 6400 ISO and above overall great image quality and this is what kept coming back to the Sony for me so while I wasn't thrilled with the usability and the ergonomics of the camera you couldn't compete with the quality that you were getting at this kind of price point with this kind of camera system and still have the ability to shoot some amazing videoos so if you're doing both of those this is definitely highend in the market so with that let's check out some of the video from the ergonomics on video this actually took a little bit of a step down for me than on the photos side and some of the examples of that are a video button way over here that's almost impossible to get to we cannot remap it to the shutter button yet in the video mode also you can remap it to some of the other buttons but you're going to be using up some very important must have buttons and so I really needed something a little bit better it was almost no tactile feel it's hard to tell when you're recording or not from that button also we're dealing with uh a mic input but no headphone output so keep that in mind also I wanted to keep this here anybody who has ever shot video and had to mount that on a tripod or mon monopod will hate this screen because once you put this on here it's pretty much locked in place you can't move it you might be able to get a little tilt up upwards but you can't get anything down and I shoot weddings and most of the time our cameras are mounted very very high on tripods to try to get over the heads of guest and doing that I was unable to see the screen at all unlike the Panasonic G7 which I'm shooting this with which does have a flip out screen and does allow me to view it down also you don't get a touchcreen and a touchcreen is very nice for video especially as we're dealing with some good autofocus systems now for video so being able to tap to focus or to change your FOC Focus Point around is nice to have and being able to navigate much quicker and change your settings without having to push on the camera and actually move these dials around and risk doing something that you wouldn't want to it's really nice for for video to just be able to tap and silently change all of your operations from the screen even if it's fa the camera is too high Out Of Reach you can tilt that down and see all of your settings you're still dealing with the limited controls you're still dealing with the uh the buttons that if you try and press you're trying to you're probably going to accidentally hit this scroll wheel so definitely some things that I were disappointing to me we also have a flash button here that we can't customize to something else which would be nice for video because you might not be using that flash button so there are little things like that that got to me the viewfinder in here is pretty nice it's not too bad at all so definitely one of the best and that's a nice feature to have from video and you do have that on a lot of cameras but it's nice to see here and uh also we do have the options in the metabones adapter to be able to mount some Canon lenses very very quickly and efficiently and you know it makes a difference especially because the Sony lenses are fly by wire focused by wire and so it being able to pull off a focus pull is extremely difficult with one of these lenses now this is a more video geared lens there are some negatives so when you turn off the camera and turn it back on it goes back to its normal zoomed out setting there's no switch on here to switch in between manual focus so if you're uh doing manual focus on here you're going to want to make sure you have it turned off in the camera because if you just turn it off using one of the switches here every time you turn off and on the camera again it's going to uh put it back to whatever you had it on so if you had it on autofocus before you just hit the button switched it off and then turn off and back on the camera it's going to reset it to everything back on so it'll recalibrate and Reet your focus points and that might not be what you want to do if you're a video shooter so uh there are little things like that that got to me but the nice thing was the footage it looks great overall this is one of the best cameras on the market today and here is the area that excels the most it's going to be in low light I had no issues pulling off, 1600 3200 and getting a nice clean image and even 6,400 for me was definitely very usable especially with an apsc camera you got to go up spending 2500 3,000 or more to get a camera that's going to compete with this video quality especially in low light I did find the overall image tends to Tin a little a little bit green that's uh something I didn't like as much but you do have video features Galore on this thing so slog 2 slog 3 tons of other picture profiles focus peaking uh you have basically everything that you would want from your high-end cameras inside of this camera but let's talk about a couple other things one of them is the elephant in the room is overheating on this camera as with most Sony cameras I've had it I shot a wedding it managed to not hit me on the wedding however I had it overheat with me when I was doing some General recording around at about 25 minutes also when shooting this review originally I was shooting it on the a6300 it did overheat on me so now I'm using the Panasonic G7 to do that and that was after about 20 25 minutes indoors it wasn't some direct sunlight from a window but these were issues that I was having so if you need to do continual recording for over 15 minutes this is going to be a very unpredictable camera after that 15 minutes now we do have uh 4 K recording up to 30 frames per second at 24 frames per second it's in a full using the full sensor and uh oversampling and taking that down so the quality and the sharpness and detail that you're able to get is unbelievable from this camera if you want to go slow motion you can go up to 120 frames per second it didn't quite look as good especially when you're used to the high-end 4K footage from me but it's definitely usable definitely good enough to be able to take with you and 60 frames per second again again is there as well so overall the quality is something that no other camera competes with another thing on here is going to be the batteries these batteries they suck honestly I was watching this thing just take into my battery life the numbers were going down as I was shooting I shoot weddings this might not be an issue for you however I can't drain a battery to zero and then replace it with a new one I have to constantly be evaluating my situation on what's coming up next and if I have speeches and toast coming up next I got to make sure I have a battery with at least 50% at the rate that these things run in so if I'm below that I got to change our battery so for me it was very very tough to use you're talking about maybe an hour hour and a half of actual recording on this thing and if you're using the camera and standby it's going to be even lower than that because you're going to be using up a lot in the screen and the overall recording of 4K so definitely something to deal with there your battery and uh the overheating are going to be your two biggest things that keep this from being a great video camera with such great autofocus performance as well in photo mode I really was hoping for some good options for video unfortunately it isn't quite there for me it was a bit slow it didn't quite keep up as much as I wanted it to and so it was good for single point and getting your focus and then turning it off it was great for that my only issue was that I couldn't just tap on the screen so moving the focus points around the screen is very very difficult and it wasn't quite reliable enough for me to track during video so I didn't use it as much for that again it's one of the better cameras on the market today however Canon Canon's cameras like the 80d and 7D Mark I are better when it comes to autof Focus performance in video than this camera so overall it wasn't my favorite camera to use in the world it it has some struggles ergonomics it has some struggle struggles with little things that get you down and keep you a little bit frustrated when using this thing in the field and I've been using this camera for a long time I was there when it first got announced I used it for 4 days in Miami with Sony and then I've had this camera for about 3 weeks since the day it came out so I've had a lot of use for this and I've taken it to a bunch of different scenarios and even shot weddings with this thing uh one with photography is my B camera and the other one I shot as my a camera is the a6300 and so I've had a lot of experience with this camera and still there are just a lot of things that are frustrating about it and keep me from loving it however the footage is there the video performance is there the photography performance is there and the customization is there so at the end of the day I keep asking myself well what else would I get and would I prefer to have that quality or the ability to shoot both video and photos and have them both look amazing and at the end of the day I normally say yes I would prefer to have the better performance the better footage and the better photos than to have some of the ergonomics of the other cameras so this is going to be a camera that I grudgingly recommend and I say that just because it it wasn't for me the most fun camera to use and the camera I prefer to take out there but it will be probably one of the best cameras for you depending on what you shoot so keep in mind those limitations if you're shooting video the limitations are harder limitations if you need to shoot more than 15 minutes probably not if you need good battery life probably not for the photo there are little things that you can work around and overall the quality that is coming from this camera is exceptional and something that most of the other cameras can cannot beat now some of your competition are going to be the Nikon d5500 Canon 80d both of those cameras the Nikon offers very very similar uh photo performance this will be a little bit better than that but very similar photo performance however the video performance on this is going to blow away the Nikon and on the Canon side the photo performance on the Sony definitely is better than something like the Canon 0d and uh also on the video side the quality of this is going to outdo the Canon on the market however the Canon does beat Nikon on the video side as well and the autofocus on video of the Canon is the only one that's really usable for me and it does have some nice things like touch screens and things of that nature that make it a little bit more fun to use on the mirrorless side Sony pretty much owns his space right now there's nothing else I mean there's plenty of mirrorless cameras Panasonic G7 I'm shooting this with but when it comes to the photo quality especially nothing else is really competing with Sony in this price range especially when you consider these video features that are available so again don't trust me for it head to the website learning cameras.
