one two three good afternoon so today is a great day to stay inside we also literally have to stay inside so I'm gonna tell a story this is the story about how my dad's met [Music] so for some context my dad's grew up in small towns in Pennsylvania and Michigan but growing up in a small town doesn't mean that you don't have big ambitions here's what I mean both of my dad's wanted a job and career that they cared about they also wanted to move to New York but more than anything they dreamed about becoming
fathers to start a family [Music] so by 1990 my dad's had begun establishing themselves they had jobs that they liked and they were loving New York and then finally in 1991 that's when they met each other they met each other in Fire Island at their mutual friend's house let me show you where that is so they exchanged numbers the old-fashioned way and it's really late right now I add up a little bit of an all-nighter but since we're talking about an Italian place [Music] so they went to this place called die Umberto and they had
a really memorable conversation so of course I wasn't there but from talking with them they said that the conversation was memorable because they talked about wanting to have kids wanting to become fathers and wanting to start a family and in the gay community at that time there was no guarantee on whether or not you would be able to become parents would be able to start a family so that was a special thing for them so I had the chance to sit down with them recently so I'll let them describe the night for you yeah yeah
the great outdoors she said the time when you guys met I remember meeting it was soon a sorority set up between the two of us like my my sorority your sorority you know I was the older group and services group of he's talking about all the else all our girlfriends I was led to understand my initial meeting with Sam that he once gone to a bar in Pittsburgh or something and all the guys lined up cuz they were doing a two-step or something and wanted to dance with Sam something so that's how we met then
we had a first date and I think we did talk with him yeah we talked about babies the first day and I remember that the first the first your first nice had been born it was a baby Nicole and you were just you know what kind of excitement about it ya know and that's why that's why I knew for all the guys I dated that's why I knew you were different cuz you were the first one that we actually talked about that important thing that was that was superb oh yeah seven years Carolina all my
friends thought Sam was really a nice guy so cute nice guys [Music] so as you probably tell my dads are pretty funny guys and yeah that was their first date that was the first impression that got of each other and this interview continues and we talked about how their relationship continued to grow to the point where they were ready to start talking about the next steps in becoming fathers and starting a family but little did they know that that would just be the start of a ton of challenges and a ton of hurdles that they
