before we explore Jung's Concepts we need to understand how he crafted his psychology I mean from which point of view he was trying to figure things out what glasses we need to put on in order to really grasp the essence of his psychology and for that we're gonna have to explore some antinomies and after that his scientific approach so he introduces the notion of antinomis in volume 16 which is also the first book I always recommend people reading and for Jung the psyche is extremely paradoxical and we explored some paradoxes in the first video introversion
versus extroversion inner World versus outer World conscious version versus unconscious so in order to really apprehend and understand the psyche we need to be able to sustain this paradoxes that's why Jung um crafted this antinomis so we can like fully apprehend the psyche and the first one is psyche depends on body and body depends on psyche and why is it so important to have like both sides because if we go just with the first half psyche depends on body this means that the psyche is afraid of brain activity and this means that we can maneuver
the psyche through our body So It ultimately means that we could um directly affect the psyche by only using meds or I don't know physical activity or dieting so only this would be able to solve everything that is psychological and we know this isn't true right absolutely like dieting exercising and meds are able to affect the psyche in a sense but we also know that they can't solve everything there are only half of the equation so when we work with the second part that body depends on psyche we also know that whenever whatever happens psychologically
can also affect our body we just explore an example there where that guy who are suffering from these imaginary cancer exactly because the psyche can affect the body right so it is this system it is this Paradox and we have to be able to sustain them in order to really understand psychological processes so Jung was really trying to create a new science here and why I say that because if we stay with only the first half it means that we can study the psyche exactly as we study the body so when he puts this first
antinomy here what he's really trying to say is that we need a new method to explore the psyche that is different from the one we use to explore like organic things and whatever happens in our body we need this new method we need this new way to understand and explore psychological processes and that's what the first antinomy is all about so the second antinomy is the individual signifies nothing in comparison with The Universal and the universal signifies nothing in comparison with the individual there are as we all know no Universal elephants only individual elephants but
if a generality a constant plurality of elephants did not exist single individual elephant would be exceedingly improbable so this is a complex one to tackle especially because we live in a day and age where the materialistic point of view and the scientific point of view is extremely preeminent so when we are discussing psychology we are always dealing with unique people like we always dealing with individuality and when we try to go with General and Broad generalizations as our mother's psychology is trying to do is trying to create these recipes he's trying to create like general
rules that you can apply to everyone this can be extremely dangerous because we you will completely ignore someone's individuality that's why we have that individual signifies nothing in comparison with The Universal because the broader you try to go like the more General you try to go the last individual you are and when we are with a unique person in front of us like this General assumptions I I just you know and obviously we share some commonalities like we all have this disposition to feel emotions anxiety depression or good emotions happiness and joy we all have
this this positions to relate to people we all have the same instincts but even though we share those commonalities they all Express themselves differently in each person so it is quite a tricky situation because we can have like General guidelines we can have like General uh things and themes and and general rules we can follow in order to help someone but at the same time we have to know that we are always dealing with someone unique so that's why we have to sustain this Paradox the individual signifies nothing in comparison with The Universal and Universal
signifies nothing in comparison with the individual well you can see Jung really loved paradoxes because the third one is a psychological statement is only true if its opposite can be asserted and this is also a really complex one to understand so give an example to make it really simple so we have this queue main categories of people introverts and extroverts and what's true for one group is is it's the exact opposite for the other one so for extroverts they have the tenancy to base their life more on the outside more uncultural values so what's really
important for for them lies on the outside so they are oriented and guided by their relationship with the external world and also with other people and this means that there they have a difficulty to understand their own individuality so this is the exact opposite for introverts where they are more based on their unique experience their unique individuality and and it's harder for them to relate to the outer world because when you relate to the outer world this will come at the expense of your uniqueness and individuality because you have to fit in the society and
you have to absorb certain cultural values so this is why a psychological statement is only true if it's opposite can be asserted so whenever something is like a true psychological phenomena you will be able to see it from both sides and this happens a lot in dreams like a lot the same symbol that appears in a dream can be understood from a positive point of view or or from a negative point of view and as we explore the dream we will be able to understand like in which side this symbolize what makes more sense so
yeah another Paradox here and to finalize in Psychotherapy there are no rules now we briefly discussed this we can have like General assumptions and we can have certain General guidelines but when we are dealing with a unique individual the rules may not matter as much that's why at the same time we have General guidelines and general rules because if we didn't had them it would be impossible to study psychology it would just be impossible to write a book if you don't have like certain directions and certain guidelines but at the same time you can't be
extremely strict you have to respect someone's individuality that's why in Psychotherapy at the same time have rules because psychological statement is only true if it's opposite can be asserted and also there are no rules
