what is going on everybody peter mckinnon here welcome back to yet another video today we're talking nifty [Music] 50. now this is a question it's a question everybody's asked anyone that talks about cameras on youtube is probably asked what camera to buy what lens to buy what should i buy next and it's all relative on your skill on your budget on what you like shooting but one thing that transcends all of these variables is the nifty 50 lens the canon 50mm the ef version is something that i've said before and i've said in the past everybody should have in their camera bag because it is such a good versatile lens versatile lens versatile lens versatile versatile a or b what do you think let me know below with the new introduction of all the mirrorless cameras that canon's been doing with the eos r and the rp and the r6 and the r5 and so on and so forth we're having to use the ef adapter with the old 50mm lens until now so this is the rf nifty 50 bringing it back so you don't have to use that adapter anymore you can just put this straight onto your r series camera and here are a few reasons why i think everybody should own this lens and if you're looking for a lens to buy next why this is probably the one you want to put on your radar number one just it takes great photos that's just out of the gate because it's got such a fast aperture it's a 1. 8 aperture so everyone that loves those photos with the separated background where it's nice and blurry and you've got that beautiful bokeh in the background bokeh or bokeh a or b a or b let me know what you think below having that separation really makes those photos look professional it just makes them look pleasing not even professional they just look great and if you don't know what i mean here's a shot with that 50 millimeter lens of me shooting but notice how crisp the foreground is the subject stands out perfectly the detail is immaculate the background is nice and compressed giving you very clear focus on what the photographer's trying to give you clear focus on me here's a more extreme version of some leaves in the forest look at that incredible depth of field that slice that thin slice of focus looks so good and you're getting that because you've got a wide open aperture now the other benefit to a wide open aperture is it's better in low light more lights coming in which means you can shoot at a faster shutter speed which means if you're shooting indoors or at night events anything like that you're gonna have better results with more light when you're in super dark settings like i don't know a cave where there's almost next to zero light those three stops of low light in this lens are gonna give you results like this where you're still able to pull detail out of a shot that was relatively completely dark now this doesn't have image stabilization but if you are putting it on an r5 or an r6 then you will have the five axis in body image stabilization with it another new addition with the new nifty 50 being that it's an rf lens you've got the option now of using the control ring on the front now you might say but where's the focus ring this feature lets you select either the control ring or you can flip it over and you can use that ring for focus so it can be a focus ring manually or you can flip that over and use it as a control ring so that can be your iso or your shutter speed or whatever you want it to control so being able to fit that onto such a small little lens that's a cool feature you've got your metal mount as always back in the day these used to be full plastic so that's always appreciated another improvement with the new rf nifty 50 is the minimum focus distances is very slightly improved the old version i think he had just over a foot minimum focus distance this one's just under a foot this version being 0.
3 meters and the old being 0. 35 meters so it's not like a massive ground-breaking shift in minimum focus distance but it is improved so that's definitely something that's good my thoughts on this is it's one of those lenses that's good regardless of your skill level be it that it's just a backup lens that you throw in your case be it that it's the main lens that you rock on your body all day long and this is providing great results or something that you want to throw in a camera when you're balancing it on a gimbal because it's nice and light it's going to be easier to balance it's just got so many different options and versatility that it just makes a no-brainer to own also the price point of these is pretty fair so if you do lose it or break it or smash it or scuff it up and it gets to the point where you do need to replace it you're looking at 200 bucks us for this lens very affordable especially for the results you're getting when you are being able to take photos that look like this most people that look at these photos probably wouldn't think they were done on a 200 lens obviously the camera's gonna play a part in that as well but arguably the lens and the glass are an even bigger part so if you're a beginner that's looking for your next lens you're looking for something to challenge yourself take new photos with get creative try new things out this is what i recommend you pick up if you're a professional that doesn't have one of these and you've never messed around with it i think you'd have a lot of fun with this if you're someone that already has a nifty 50 and you're happy with your ef version do you need the rf version for your cameras probably not if you're happy throwing it on the adapter you already know the magic of the nifty 50. but if you want to lose the ef adapter then yeah pick this up and it saves you some space on the camera a little bit better minimum focus and you've got the control ring if that's something that you've grown used to otherwise the nifty 50 has always been the nifty 50.
