uh question the ra the rational of this uh question under the subtopic of chapter one is that um to connect the historical context of the 1980s to current Global Environmental challenges um as this question um would like to highlight the uh significance of Earth system studies and then moving on to chapter two the first question is what is the importance of the concept of anthropos in um evolve so um from the uh from the first chapter it is interconnected on this uh question that they have for chapter two since um antrop has been uh discussed

of environmental um changes so uh for this um this question further uh would like to ident to identify the um the indic uh the indicators that has been mention on that such as the carbon emission spacies ex uh Extinction and land that has been uh used for changes and then for the last chapter which is the chapter uh chapter 4 um what is the significance of Pat dependency in determining the outcome once a Tipping Point is reached and how does it limit future option for Societies or market so on the um on this uh particular
question it has been um it has been mainly highlighted on the subtopic of chapter 4 this particular um this particular term which is the path of dependency so uh for this same question that I have is that um uh it aims to um have a indepth um understanding of this particular concept to it a pivotal role in shaping the tra uh trajectory events once in point is um reach so uh by doing uh by having this question um by having this question um we'll be able to understand the lock in um um where in the

Global Research um efforts on the uh critical aspect of Earth's um ecosystem and biological cycle I thank you po okay thank you Miss adoma for the presentation so um just to give my com comment on the different memo presentations no different questions posed by the members of 31 and 32 it's very interesting to note that you have I mean come up with questions that do not just you know something that is outside of the readings so it made question for example what's the role of path dependency or what has what are the implications for human
societies how does it affect um societal resilience and it's very interesting because instead of just framing it as resilience you're actually focusing on a particular aspect of resilience for example and that is social resilience and um later on we would try to understand to um how do we enhance our resilience to what so tabbing resilience to a resilience for whom and resilience to what okay so thank you so much the questions that um you've presented you've come up with during um the reading of the material so um later on in my in my discussion as
much as possible I will try to work on addressing the questions that you had mainly focusing on um the reading material but also going beyond the reading material to show or illustrate the implications of these readings given that um Angus really um presented a very deep um discourse on climate change specifically from moving from ploen to hosin and now introducing anthropos so anthropos is not yet officially I mean it's not yet officially recognized although it's um people are widely aware of the anthropos because it shifts the focus from natural to human Centric um perspective okay
so with that I'm going to share my screen can you sh uh can you see my screen now so I do not see if my reactions or please unmute yourselves if like I'm asking a question because I could not see the screen okay see so we're now dealing with um what are the insights that we get from reading the materials and we'll be looking at um the anthropos in itself so Angus actually um introduced um the ropos and it tried to widen our understanding of this um not like unofficial Epoch and then what are its
climate implications so an you anthropos this is actually a a geological EPO which arised by significant human influence so from the word um from the root anthr so meaning we're actually focusing our understanding of geological processes on the basis of human activities and what are the implications of these human activities to the changing of the climate Okay so in other words an anthropos is looking at still with the natural environment per we added a very important factor that is human activities influence climate change human activities or VI versa so we're looking at the linkage between
these two um variables secondly how can we call it as anthropos basis on why we called this geological geological Epoch as anthropy scientists or Scholars on understanding the linkage between human activities and um climate change or the natural environment firstly rization so industrialization is characterized an know by um widespread use of mechanized production processes in other words this has lead to the increase of carbon emissions mainly because burning of coal oil natural gas um sustain uh let's say for example with Transportation or any processes that requires some sort of energy downside processes is that we're
using um this process called burning and this Burning is actually leading to the increased emission of of carbon gases so industrialization major and massive industrial activities that actually affected atmosphere because of carbon emissions and industrialization According to some Scholars have been the starting point of theanthropos okay second is urbanization so because of industrialization um cities or urban areas where um industrialization processes are taking place and with industrialization follows urbanization because with urbanization concentrate because of let's say for example because of jobs because of opportunities and because people are being concentrated on urban areas or in
cities it actually also lead to the increase of um energy consumption increase of waste production well as um natural environments being converted to built environments through for example Reclamation concentrated Urban are areas that we don't have spaces anymore for example with commercial buildings residential buildings schools whatsoever so Gaga urbanization is that it's actually not only um not only exemplifying increase of waste production as well as energy consumption but it's making um waves in terms of um Reclamation just so just so space for the different um um Urban um urbanized processes or um processes that are
important for sustaining urbanization as well as industrialization so shift from agrarian societies to Urban living now not only affected the um not only affected um carbon emissions but also destroyed natural habitats or natural ecosystems with in terms of land use or what we call as land use changes and it affected biodiversity second is environmental degradation so s anthropos focus is more on human activities and how human activities has has been linked to changes s climate now environmental degradation comes in many forms in theanthropos if we're using the lens of the anthropos environmental degradation can include
deforestation pollution habitat destruction as well as overe exploitation of resources anthropos we will be we will actually in the next slides we will be um realizing now there is actually overe exploitation of resources so this is the third characteristic of the anthrop no so overall what we're what we're saying is that the anthropos has led to to um accelerated pace and scale of changes gradual anthrop or accelerated scale of changes limited to a particular area May let's say for example for an urban area connect interconnected sh from one urban area to another urban area then
from Nation to Nation so accelerated Mas extent and pacing scale changes second human activities particular industrialization and urbanization have really altered the Earth Systems in a planetary scale okay because of um rapid acceleration of changes s environment s climate um changes as well with the Earth Systems planetary scale consequences climate change loss of biodiversity and environmental degradation early observations on the climate and how and why it changes firstly merong um scholar named John tindel and his observations on the greenhouse effect so C tindal he discovered that certain Gases such as water vapor and carbon dioxide
has the ability to absorb and chap heat so before he turned um these um processes as acous vapor and carbonic acid so para in his observations demonstrate gases carbon dioxide at acous Vapor or water vapor is acting like a blanket around Earth so it allows um solar radiation to pass through through but then it traps heat inside heat outside of Earth so in other words and carbon dioxide and the water vapor The acous Vapor are actually sort of um they're they're like blankets in other words as J John tendel termed it they're like blankets now
they can allow solar radiation to come to to to come through pero trap n heat inside Earth okay so an know implications of tendal research for climate change anyone from the class any want from the class Rick or CJ hello po Mom C please answer the question for me the implication of tindell's research on climate change um he suggested that the Earth is having a blanket so it covers or heat so it could lead to a widespread of heat high heat index that could affect not just human activities but also the environment especially um on
terms like increasing environment like um or Arctic okay thank you Rick CJ oh m uh I would like to agree I would like to add Lang for my own understanding I guess I saw po now it is somehow similar to the a lesson po I to the book now I read po before now uh it says greous effect it conts the heat just like what uh the planet of the Mars po characteristic which is before talaga and now is a huge problem absor heat but it it it is very difficult for it to release so
result is too much heatable for other for other countries it also kills po an know a lot of uh uh farms and other places before which is the high heat index a PO okay thank you see thank you CJ and Rick for answering the question so um yes no what are the implications of tindell's research for climate change it actually led to a deeper understanding of um a deeper understanding of how do the greenhouse um effect works P Greenhouse Effect and in terms of um regulating the Earth's temperature so it actually led to um the
understanding of how climate change happened an you processes on why climate change is is happening okay so very important factor you understanding as well of the greenhouse gases what are their roleso n TR heat um what kind of gases are called greenhouse gases so by identifying carbon dioxide as a heat absorbing gas finado tindal consequences greenhouse gases in changing the atmospheric concent ation of these gases atmosphere okay so now the more carbon emissions or the the more carbon gases are emitted to the atmosphere then it's most likely going to alter you um atmospheric concentration that
could lead to global warming so um these are the implications of thel's research um for change evolve climate change understanding in the 20th century so s book the chapters um the three chapters that was um given to you as a material for today's class um Evolution no from um Pline to holine and now um introducing anthropos so others believe that we are still in the holine ER per others also are claiming that we should shift our Focus to a new um geological Epoch which is um anthropos so evolution of climate change understanding starting with um
studies presenting results that there is a linkage between human activities and climate change or there is an influence a massive influence of human activities on the natural environment so now um recently ipcc so I think you've already heard of this um intergovernmental organization the ipcc is the intergovermental panel of climate change and they are uh the organization is a very important um intergovernmental representation for um really tackling issu around climate change and in proposing solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change so it's actually moving from just the scientific understanding of climate change and how
human activities are influencing climate change to bridging it to policy so you political um economy no that we are trying to br climate science or previously s previous previous slides that we're trying to understand what climate change is but the climate change understanding has evolved to also include um policies and how does it and what are it uh its economic effects social effects for example so the intergovernmental panel in climate change creates reports I mean they do scholarly studies of climate change and its impacts on sustainability on sustainable development for example but they also at
like at the same time aside from scholarly studies of the climate change processes or the climate change impacts climate adaptation or climate mitigation they are bridging science and policy so nag instrumental ipcc especially with its um ipcc assessment reports Para uh Advance or increase level of awareness s climate change by providing scientific um comprehensible and comprehensive scientific knowledge of um climate change so pag um how important are these um scientific knowledge that is being shared by the atcc it has been critical in shape climate policy as well as in driving Global action so firstly United
Nations framework convention on climate change where in different um government um officials different ngos different um representatives from the Civil Society and even from the academ are coming together to discuss the most pressing issues s climate like let's say for example um when it comes to loss and damages so the developing countries are being able like they're able to have a platform to discuss the extent of Damages or impacts of climate change to to developing countries Soo naging um how how um how the pl how the impacts of disasters or climate change are not equal
in terms of developing countries and developed countries alsoo protocol when it comes to managing disasters or drr and then the Paris agreement for climate mitigation so lowering the carbon emissions okay so evolution of climate change understanding in such a case that already involves policies the government as well as taking into consideration the economic and social impacts of climate change so moving on from um climate change understanding we now look at the role of fossil fuels so earlier we have um we have like discussed John tindel and the greenhouse effect but we have to understand better
that with the accumulation of greenhouse gases due to the burning of fossil fuels it's not only altering the Earth's temperature but it's also um it's like a domino effect no it's also causing a range of climate related issues so global warming it's also um causing sea level rise as well as more frequent and severe weather events so 10 years ago typhoon Yolanda or typhoon hayan which the globan was badly hit and it was an example of how changes s climate of how the increase of global temperature is actually producing more frequent and severe weather events
so par domino effect that with the burning of fossil fuels through industrialization and with um adding to that is the concept of urbanization accumulation of greenhouse gases that has a wide range of consequences so in other words babalik ano climate change I mean is it a natural um is it is it a natural process you climate change and so we go back to the concept of anthropos where there is the linkage of human activities to climate change or to the environment so we now go back to human induced climate change who are burning fossil fuels
who are benefiting from industrialization so human activities human consuming humans um producing so this rapid and excessive release of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases due to human activities is the primary driver of anthropogenic climate change so this is the center um or the core of the anthropos so we now go now uh we now proceed to the climate change impacts earlier some questions that were presented by the memo presenters mostly it touched on what are the consequences okay an impacts for the society how can um how can we enhance the resilience of communities or
how can we enhance societal resilience but before we try to touch on the um societal resilience we now have to understand what are the climate change impacts okay so firstly as mentioned earlier increased frequency of extreme weather events so because of climate change it's actually leading to an increase um in increase also in the severity of extreme weather events as mentioned Kina um typhoon Yolanda typhoon odet so um s um severity wether events massive loss and damages so infrastructure it also led to loss of lives and disruption to communities production chains um Supply chains so
very I think um very observable impact climate change next is sea level rise so I think you're very um well aware of this this one in such a sense now um because of rising global temperatures it actually is causing the melting of the polar ice so because of the melting of the Polar Ice thermal expansion of seawater so level seaera s um like in in relation to LS so in other words those communities particularly Coastal communities or below sea level are particularly at risk so with the continuous melting of Polar Ice the coastal communities and
other communities below s sea level are vul vulnerable to increased coastal flooding erosion and the salinization of freshwater resources so um the the consequence of this is that more and more people will be depl uh displaced so climate um climate migration so the people um are being displaced or they're looking for safer places because of the because of their vulnerability to sea level rise next is biodiversity loss so habitat destruction convert natural environment into built environments are actually um really affecting our many many species so because their habitats are destroyed for industrialization or for urbanization
they are struggling to adaptan and with deforestation as well so the the extinction or the loss of biodiversity is also or also has a domino effect on agriculture and human livelihoods for example with um let's say for example with the Philippine eagle so considered sh NASA Red List no so because of deforestation naan territory Philippine eagles this is particularly hard because Eagles are known as very territorial so say for example if this area which they considered as territory is let's say for example ma um Gina built environment so eag and it will be very it
will be a struggle for them to find a new home given that Eagles are very territorial is Forest given that it there might be another Eagle that marked it as as their own territory also with eagles um it's very hard for them to reproduce mon so once they marry I mean another Eagle for life um they would not like choose deliberately choose to mate with another eagle given that they've already have been married to to a female eagle so you challenge with with eagles that's why um it's very important to take into consideration that with
deforestation or with the conversion of built uh conversion of natural environments to built environments consequence like a huge um negative consequence to different species which affects overall biodiversity next is change in agriculture and food security so it's very evident that with the rising global temperatures it's actually also altering the precipitation patterns as well as the temperature regimes crop yields at quality so because of changes in the climate um negative um consequence for agriculture and food security next our health impacts so S Health side Naman because of climate change it can introduce new um health risk
for example heat related illnesses respiratory problems and the uh faster spread of vector born diseases like malaria and Dy fever on The Economic Consequences we're focusing more on the loss and damages that could um amount to billions of dollars so because of um loss and damages now in huge amounts H it could actually help uh not help but it could actually um it's a big challenge to local to to governments particularly um to to to gather funds for example for um roads or for health services and so on and so forth so it's therefore very
important to recognize the risks associated with climate change cuz we are not just talking about hundreds of thousands of um loss like in terms of loss and damages but we if we're actually looking at billions of dollars economic losses next is water scarcity and quality so we're not just looking at scarcity but we're also looking at quality of water in relation to the impact of climate change so um Rising global temperatures that could actually lead to Drought we're looking at precipitation patterns changes in precipitation patterns that could lead to salinization of freshwater resources so this
is affecting um a lot of people not only uh developing countries um parts of developed countries that are experiencing water scarcity and quality next is the displacement of communities so in terms of climate migration because of the severe impacts of climate change the local communities they are like they're very vulnerable to to to Drought they're very very vulnerable to sea level rise then they are like they have no choice but to find new homes and um from being as like a citizen of their country let's say for example um part part Community is L because
of sea level rise they have to find a new home and so they have to be a sort of a climate Refugee so usually is war refugees no let's say for example from Syria to seek Refuge from um the impacts of War but with climate change we also have people climate refugees that they have to find new homes in order to be safe from the impacts of climate change next is infrastructure damage so Hindi um economic losses my experience but also with um the damage brought by climate change impacts to roads to Bridges buildings so
any infrastructure that when repaired would cost millions and even billions of dollars second uh last is security and conflict so not only is um infrastructure not only are we talking about um climate migration but we're also talking about possible conflicts so because of changes in climate there might be instances scarcity of resources scarcity food supply and so therefore there might there's a likelihood social and political tensions especially with regions limited resources comp migration pressures as well as food insecurity that could create um political inst stability okay so any questions with climate change impacts before we

me need to say um end point economic system is always consumption uh production this distribution and then um consumption the problem is consumption uh was uh waste that the consumption that we create is um exacerbating or uh affecting the natural or the biophysical uh aspect of the Earth or our ecosystem and with that uh you capitalism it is uh the primary cause or driver of exacerbating climate change okay thank you analo for answering the question and yes no with capitalism and economic systems that actually favor um overe exploitation of resources so it is accelerating the
um biodiversity laws for example CU profit seeking and core capitalism so in other words capitalism would try to generate more and more profit in order to maximize economic growth in order to maximize their profits so because they're prioritizing finan IAL gains as well as Market um competitiveness it's actually leading to Resource exploitation so resource exploitation deforestation conversion of natural environments to build environments uh burning of fossil fuels burning of forests um extracting minerals um extracting water resources that could lead to ecological degre ation as well as resource dep depletion go capitalism or fossil capitalism in
this regard is to generate more and more profits and so they don't have this um they don't have a regard for um the ecology they don't have a regard for the environment what they want is to maximize profits so in order to maximize profits they have to exploit resources but is there is already overe exploitation of resources so dep um uh ecological degradation but more so fil capitalism capitalist is the pursuit of low cost resources so this is an implications for um in the environment in a sense that they're centering on environmentally destructive practices such
as mining um irresponsible mining over fishing or deforestation so G fossil capitalism also anov mentioned earlier about um consumption no so fossil capitalism we have this um practice of over consumption or consumerism so because um the capitalists are offering like more and more resources at a very low cost but with the um with the thinking that they would profit more with this one because it would increase demand over consumption so over consumption is um the over consumption is also an indirect result of over production or excessive production G is for example with fast fashion produce
produce low cost but at the same time the consumers who are consuming these Goods particularly for example with fashion or or like not necessarily Luma but after how many months you have this urge to buy again okay so exacerbate resource depletion but it's also um generating vast amounts of waste recycle or not properly managed usually if you are in the mall and there is a sale for that um shoes or bag or clothes you have this urge deat to buy that bag and you're thinking your mindset might be next month whatsoever you have this urge
to consume to over consume if you still have a shoes like if you still have a pair of shoes so um this is also um the how fossil capit ism is impacting um the economic thinking of individuals as well as the overall um um economic system and its processes second is the unequal impact of um climate change so climate change dis disproportionately affects vulnerable and marginalized populations exploit resources profit from the exploitation of resources are the ones less affected so unequal distribution of climate impacts that raises issues of environmental justice with fossil capitalism it's only
the um marginalized populations who are affected by the impacts of climate change but not the capitalists who overexploited the resources and led which led to deforestation which led to the um release of of uh increased release of carbon emissions okay okay so that's the end of fossil capitalism do you have any questions any questions so far none po ma'am okay see so before we go to the activity before we go to the activity let's discuss all of the questions of the memo presenters let's start with um 31 so let's choose okay I will let okay

of climate change for example um sea level rise or climate migration so with with climate migration consider involve K land where and how you see climate migration then second identify factors or causes that may be part of the problem reason for climate migration is it um sea level rise is it drought is it burning fossil fuels Etc and then you put identify as many factors as possible next is for each of the factor brainstorm possible effects that may be related to the factor such as increased food costs declining Water Supplies Etc and then finally brainstorm
or research potential potential solutions for the factors you have identified and discuss how positive change can help slow the effects of climate change so I would suggest now uh take a picture of the instructions then we will be doing this um we will be doing this individually I'll create a submission bin we will do this now so I'll create a submission bin and then I will ask somebody to share their um their activity the output I will share uh to share their output later on so clear on instructions any questions take a screenshot of this

is an absorbent of uh CO2 so naturally just like trees and the forest in absorb ocean carbon dioxide atmosphere and when sea water absorbs carbon dioxide absorption chemical uh reaction which dissolves s CA this chemical reaction causes a decrease in the pH level ocean making it more acidic um since the industrial Industrial Revolution 30% acidic so involved s um involved effects n marine life including coral reefs shellfish um and other marine marine living things and also human beings such as consumers and Fisher folks and included industry um this during the Industrial Revolution due to increase
in CO2 emissions and burning of fossil fuels effects of this can be felt all over the world um how can we see this effect we can see it by viewing our Coral our coral reefs as we can see bleach Sil and they have structures now and there is also a visible change in the behavior of fishes um decline in the production of shellfish and mosks and its effect on livelihood especially folks um the factors contributing to this is because of the burning of fossil fuels I've mentioned ear the first improper waste management and human activities
why improper Waste Management it is because s Philippines example Philippines Philippines we rely heavily on landfills until now so ums land acid oans and human activities uh including agricultural processes in which we use fertilizers um increase n uh carbon dioxide emission and greenhouse gases um effects of this degradation of marine life slower growth rate of coral reefs fish decline disruption of food web since um weaker shells Shish a ocean and impact our food supply and Industry which is self-explanatory solutions for is of course reduction of CO2 emissions carbon sequestration in oceans and proper Waste Management
