let's get started to understand the real truth about Christmas let's first go back to the gospels of Matthew and Luke which give us the most detailed accounts of Christ's birth these scriptures tell us about the miraculous events surrounding the arrival of Jesus Christ but surprisingly they never mention a specific date let's read Luke 2: 6 to 7 and so it was that while they were there the days were accomplished that she should be delivered and she brought forth her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a Manger because there was
no room for them in the Inn this passage beautifully describes the humble circumstances of jesus' birth the savior of the world the king of kings was born in a lowly Manger wrapped in simple swaddling clothes because there was no room for him in the Inn yet in this entire story there's no indication of a specific date certainly no mention of December 25th if the exact date of jesus' birth were important wouldn't God have revealed it clearly in his word so how do we determine when Jesus was actually born while the Bible doesn't specify a date
it does provide clues that lead many biblical Scholars to conclude that Jesus's birth likely occurred in the spring or fall not winter let's read Luke chapter 2:8 and there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field keeping watch over their flock By Night notice the detail here Shepherds were abiding in the field keeping watch over their flocks at night this might seem insignificant but it actually gives us a clue about the season in Bethlehem Winters are cold rainy and even snowy at times during this season Shepherds typically wouldn't keep their flocks in the
Open Fields overnight instead they would shelter their sheep in enclosures to protect them from the harsh weather the fact that the Shepherds were outside watching their flocks at night suggests a milder season such as spring or fall during the springtime Shepherds would stay out in the fields for lamming season when sheep give birth to their young isn't it fitting that the Lamb of God Jesus Christ who would take away the sins of the world John 1: 29 could have been born during this same time of year so if the Bible doesn't tell us that Jesus
was born on December 25th where does this date actually come from history reveals that the origins of December 25th have little to do with the birth of Christ and much more to do with ancient Pagan celebrations December 25th coincides with ancient Roman and Pagan festivals that predate Christianity by centuries one of the most notable celebrations is satania a Roman Festival in honor of Saturn the god of Agriculture and time saturnalia was a week-long festival starting on December 17th and concluding around December 23rd it was a time of great feasting drinking giftgiving and public merry making
normal Roman social structures were turned upside down slaves were temporarily freed and treated as equals people people exchanged small gifts often candles or Clay figurines the streets were filled with rry and festivity essentially satania was a time of indulgence and lawlessness a stark contrast to the humility and Holiness associated with the coming of Jesus Christ in addition to satania the date of December 25th also aligns with the winter solstice an important time for many ancient cultures the winter solstice marks the shortest day and long night of the year after which the days begin to grow
longer pagans saw this as The Rebirth of the Sun and celebrated the sun God's return with light fire and feasting for example the Norse celebrated Ule burning large logs in honor of the son's rebirth in mithraism a Persian religion December 25th was the birthday of mithras the sun god of light so where does Christianity fit into this as Christ Christianity spread through the Roman Empire the church faced a challenge how to convert Pagan populations without completely abolishing their deeply ingrained traditions in the 4th Century during the reign of emperor Constantine Who legalized Christianity church leaders
began to adapt Pagan festivals to make them more Christ centered rather than celebrating the birth of Saturn or mythis December 25th was designated as the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ the intent may have been Noble redirecting people's Focus from pagan gods to Christ but the date itself was never based on scripture it was a compromise interestingly the early church the first generations of Christians did not celebrate Jesus's birth at all their focus was primarily on his death and Resurrection which are Central to the gospel message Jesus himself never commanded his followers to celebrate
his birth however he did Institute the Lord's Supper to remember his sacrifice Luke 22: 19 and he took bread and gave thanks and break it and gave unto them saying this is my body which is given for you this do in remembrance of me for the first few centuries after Christ Christians honored Jesus through their daily lives and worship they remembered his life death and Resurrection but there's no historical evidence of Christmas celebrations during that time let's read Colossians 2:8 beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit after the tradition of men
after the rudiments of the world and not after Christ this verse is a clear warning from the Apostle Paul he reminds us to be cautious about Traditions rooted in man-made ideas or worldly philosophies rather than God's word as Believers we must carefully examine everything we do in light of scripture now let's take a closer look at some of the most po popular Christmas traditions the Christmas tree in Santa Claus where do they come from do they align with the Bible or have they been influenced by cultural practices that distract us from Christ the Christmas tree
is one of the most iconic symbols of the holiday season families gather to decorate it with lights ornaments and tinsel but where did this tradition really come from the use of trees in Winter celebrations goes back to ancient Pagan cultures The Druids of northern Europe would worship evergreen trees as symbols of eternal life they believed the trees had spiritual Powers because they remained green during the harsh winter months the Romans used Evergreen boughs to decorate during the Festival of satania honoring the God Saturn in Norse Traditions evergreen trees symbolize The Rebirth of the Sun and
life after the winter solstice when Christianity spread into Europe some of these practices were adapted and merged Ed into Christmas traditions many point to ancient Pagan practices where trees were worshiped even the Bible warns against this Jeremiah 10: 2:4 thus saith the Lord learn not the way of the Heathen for one cutteth a tree out of the forest they deck it with silver and with gold this passage describes a practice among ancient Pagan Nations where people would cut down trees decorate them and even worship them as Idols while this doesn't directly refer to Modern Christmas
trees it does highlight God's warning against adopting Pagan Customs or symbols that distract from worshiping him the question we must ask ourselves is this are we honoring God with this tradition or has it become a meaningless ritual many people today use the Christmas tree simply as a festive decoration with no Pagan intentions however as Believers we should always eval valate the origins of our traditions and ensure that they glorify God if we use a Christmas tree let's make it Christ centered perhaps by placing a star or angel on top to symbolize Christ's birth and the
heavenly host that announced it another prominent figure during the Christmas season is Santa Claus the jolly old man in a red suit who delivers gifts to children but did you know that Santa's Origins Trace back to a real person Santa Claus is rooted in the story of St Nicholas of Myra a fourth century Christian Bishop from modernday Turkey St Nicholas was known for his incredible generosity and compassion for the poor one famous story tells of how he secretly delivered bags of gold to save three poor sisters from being sold into slavery he did this at
night tossing the gold through their window so no one would know it was him over time Nicholas became venerated as the patron saint of children Sailors and the needy as centuries passed St Nicholas's story was combined with European folklore in the 19th century Dutch settlers brought the legend of casses to America where he eventually became the Santa Claus we know today complete with his reindeer sigh and North Pole Workshop while St Nicholas's story reflects Christian values of generosity and kindness the modern Santa Claus often overshadows the true meaning of Christmas children are taught to focus
on receiving gifts and pleasing Santa instead of recognizing Jesus as the greatest gift ever given let's read Matthew 6: 19 to 21 lay not up for yourselves Treasures upon Earth where moth and rust doth corrupt and where thieves break through and steal but lay up for yourselves Treasures in Heaven for where your treasure is there will your heart be also the Bible reminds us that material possessions are temporary while gift giving is a wonderful way to show love we must keep our hearts focused on the Eternal gift of Salvation through Jesus Christ at their core
Traditions like the Christmas tree and Santa Claus are man-made while they may bring joy to families we must ask ourselves are these Traditions drawing us closer to Christ or are they distracting us from the true reason for the season as Christians our focus should always remain on Jesus his coming to Earth was the Fulfillment of God's greatest promise to save you Humanity from sin and offer eternal life whether you choose to have a Christmas tree or talk about Santa Claus with your family remember this Traditions are not inherently wrong but they should never replace or
overshadow the truth of Christ let's use this season to point others to the gospel and remind them that Jesus is the true reason we celebrate now that we've explored the origins of Christmas traditions let's focus on the most important message of all the biblical purpose of Jesus's coming why does his birth matter and how should it impact our lives today to truly understand the significance of Christ's birth we need to go back to the beginning In the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve disobeyed God sin entered the world creating a separation between humanity and
God sin brought death and eternal separation from him let's read John 3:6 for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life this verse beautifully summarizes the purpose of Jesus's coming out of his incredible love for us God sent his son Jesus Christ to bridge the gap that sin had created Jesus came to save us from Eternal death and offer us everlasting life but how did Jesus save us by becoming the ultimate sacrifice for our sins let's read the scripture for
the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ Our Lord Romans 6: 23 our sin earned us death but God's gift through Christ brings us eternal life long before Jesus was born the prophets of the Old Testament foretold the coming of a savior who would deliver Humanity from sin let's read Isaiah 7:14 therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign Behold a virgin shall receive and bear a son and shall call his name Emmanuel Emmanuel means God With Us Jesus wasn't just a man he was God
In the Flesh coming to dwell among his people and provide the way back to him let's read Matthew 1: 21 and she shall bring forth a son and thou shalt call his name Jesus for he shall save his people from their sins the name Jesus comes from the Hebrew name Yeshua which means the Lord is salvation this is the very reason Jesus came not to be celebrated with materialism but to save us from the power and penalty of sin when we look at how Christmas is celebrated today filled with shopping decorations and distractions it's easy
to lose sight of why Jesus came he didn't come to give us a holiday season filled with material gifts he came to give us the greatest gift of all salvation and eternal life the birth of Jesus isn't something we should recognize just one day day a year his coming should transform our hearts and lives every single day Jesus came to make us new if we believe in him repent of our sins and follow him we are no longer slaves to sin we are given a new identity as children of God so how can we honor
the true purpose of Jesus's coming number one obey his teachings Jesus said in John 14:15 if you love me keep my Commandments let show our love for him not just with words but through obedience living lives that reflect his truth and Holiness number two share his love with others Christmas is an opportunity to share the gospel the good news of Christ with friends family and even strangers let's use this season to tell others why Jesus came and how they too can have eternal life number three Focus On Christ every day don't let Jesus be just
a part of your Christmas celebration make him the center of your life every day of the year spend time in prayer and study his word serve others with love and compassion praise him for his incredible sacrifice and the hope he brings so after learning about the origins of Christmas the Traditions associated with it and the biblical purpose of Jesus's coming many Christians may ask should we celebrate Christmas at all is it wrong to participate in this holiday given its mixed history let's look at what the Bible says and how we can approach this in a
way that honors god let's read Romans chapter 14: 5-6 one man esteemeth one day above another another esteemeth every day alike let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind he that regardeth the day regardeth it unto the Lord and He that regardeth not the day to In this passage the Apostle Paul addresses disagreements among early Christians regarding ing the observance of special days some Believers set apart certain days as holy While others treated every day the same Paul's message is clear Christians have the freedom to decide as long as their intentions are to
honor the Lord if you choose to celebrate Christmas do it with a heart focused on Christ if you choose not to celebrate it that's also fine just ensure your decision is grounded in a desire to please God and follow his word Paul also warns Believers not to judge or look down on one another over such matters what's important is not the day at self but the attitude of our hearts are we glorifying God in our actions or are we letting Traditions distract us from him while Christians have freedom regarding Christmas we must be cautious about
how we celebrate it the world has turned Christmas into a season of consumerism and Indulgence people rush to buy gifts sometimes going into debt just to to keep up with expectations decorations Santa Claus and holiday feasting often take center stage while the message of Jesus birth gets pushed aside let's read 1 Corinthians 10:31 whether therefore ye eat or drink or whatsoever ye do do all to the glory of God this verse gives us a powerful principle to live by everything we do should glorify God if we celebrate Christmas it should be done in a way
that points people to Christ not to materialism not to empty traditions and certainly not to the distractions of this world here are a few questions to ask yourself during the Christmas season does my celebration focus on Jesus Christ and his gift of Salvation am I using this season as an opportunity to share the gospel and reflect God's love have I allowed worldly Traditions giftgiving or materialism to overshadow the real reason for the season if the answer to any of these questions concerns you it might be time to refocus your celebration if you choose to celebrate
Christmas here are some practical ways to keep Christ at the center one read the Nativity Story with your family from the Bible especially Luke Chapter 2 and Matthew chapter 1 reflect on the humility of Jesus's birth two pray and give thanks for God's Incredible Gift of Salvation Christmas is an opportunity to remember and celebrate his love three share with others instead of focusing on receiving gifts follow Christ's example of generosity by giving to those in need whether through acts of kindness charitable donations or sharing the Gospel Four worship together attend a church service or gather
with other believers to honor Christ in prayer worship and praise let your celebration reflect the joy and hope that Jesus brought to the World on the other hand if you choose not to celebrate Christmas because of its pagan roots or because you feel convicted that's okay too what matters is that your decision is made with a heart that seeks to honor God let's read Colossians 3:23 and whatsoever ye do do it heartily as to the Lord and not unto men whether you celebrate or abstain do it as unto the Lord as Christians we need to
extend Grace to one another regarding this topic some may celebrate Christmas as a time to honor Jesus's birth While others may choose to abstain to avoid associations with Pagan Traditions both positions can honor God when done with the right motives Romans 14:13 let us not therefore judge one another anymore but judge this rather that no man put a stumbling block or an occasion to fall in his brother's way let's avoid unnecessary arguments or divisions over personal convictions instead let's focus on what unites us our faith in Jesus Christ and our shared mission to glorify him
so is it wrong to celebrate Christmas the answer depends on your heart and your motives if you celebrate Christmas let it be a time to worship Jesus share his love and reflect on his gift of Salvation if you choose not to celebrate let it be a decision that honors God and avoids distractions from his truth whether you celebrate or not remember this the key is to honor God in all things stay rooted in biblical truth and keep your focus on Jesus Christ he is the reason for every season not just December 25th to summarize Christmas
as celebrated today has many Traditions with roots outside the Bible while there's nothing wrong with celebrating Jesus's birth let's remember the real reason he came to save us from our sins and give us eternal life don't let the world's Traditions take away your Focus On Christ keep him at the center of your life not just on December 25th but every single day if this video blessed you or opened your eyes to the truth please like comment and share it with others and don't forget to subscribe for more biblical insights God bless you and see you
