throughout the reign of Queen Elizabeth I to Worship in a different manner to the queen was incredibly dangerous Elizabeth dealt with Catholics ruthlessly and many priests were driven underground to conduct secret ceremonies and services and noble families paid large amounts to have priest holes and hides built into their homes where Catholic priests could be smuggled in if the authorities turned up to their doors hunting them the religious rules led to the execu utions and deaths of hundreds of people many incredibly Pious and peaceful men who just wanted to preach and spread their teachings there was
one woman who for Sheltering priest was even crushed to death by her own door but there was a lot of animosity towards these brutal rules across England and for one priest he encountered an execution method which was completely harrowing hanging drawing and quartering but the authorities were worried that he would attract a huge crowd who would help to save him and for this priest Joseph Lampton was executed in secret very early on a Monday morning and there was very few people if any who attended the execution but what is the story of this horrific death
and to support our Channel please make sure to subscribe Joseph Lampton belonged to a well-known family in the north of England in Durham and as a Young Man man he trained to become a priest he attended the English College a Catholic training school in France alongside a number of other men but whilst he was here in the mid 1580s Elizabeth I's government passed a number of laws against Catholics and it was clear that priests were to be persecuted heavily parliament passed a law in which priests and religious people who entered England were to become or
considered traitors unless within the first 3 days of of them arriving in the country they would take the oath of Supremacy in the company of a Justice of the Peace the point of this was so that the Catholic priests who had come from abroad could be found as they would refuse to accept Elizabeth I as the Supreme head of the Church of England and then these would be arrested there were already scores of priests in England who were being subjected to harrowing executions for their Catholic Worship but Joseph Lampton was determined to continue and he
wanted to return home and he was ordained as a Catholic priest in the lat Trin basilia in March of 1592 he was actually two months too young but special dispensation was made for this he then left England on the 22nd of April 1592 and he was to be sent to work and conduct Catholic services in the area of West mland however after landing in England he was arrested in the City of Newcastle and was then brought in front of a judge at the next assises alongside another Catholic priest Edward Waton they were both quickly sentenced
to death but the death sentences they would receive would not be Rapid or aimed at ensuring they died quickly Lampton was sentenced to be hanged drawn and quartered his execution was to take place on the 31st of July 1592 previously it had been arranged for days earlier so that it would take place on a Saturday in the Kenton area of Newcastle upon the point of this would be to have many people watching the harrowing execution of the priest however the local authorities then changed this as they thought that his execution could cause a riot amongst
locals who held Catholic sentiment it was also then decided that Lampton and Waterson would be executed separately and Waterson was actually given a brief reprieve to see if he would change his views but Lampton was not the time of his execution he was only roughly 23 years of age and he was incredibly young for a priest who was executed during Elizabeth the first Reign Lampton was on a Monday very early in the morning brought out to the execution scaffold inside of Newcastle to be hanged drawn and quartered this execution method had many stages each of
them more horrific first lampon was brought to the scaffold after being dragged through the streets of Newcastle many miles tied to a hurdle behind a horse this was excruciating and the cobbled Streets Could often inflict severe injuries to the head of The Condemned when he was brought to the scaffold he was untied and was then handed over to the Executioner the Executioner then took Lampton and he tied a noose around his neck and then threw the Rope Over The Gallows and he choked the life out of the priest but then when lamon was almost dead
he released the rope and lampon CED to the floor but this is where things get very strange the Executioner then gave up and he refused to execute Joseph Lampton and to continue with the hanging drawing and quartering he may have thought he was executing an innocent man or offending god with his actions and because of this the initial hangman gave up and then the rest of the execution sentence was carried out by a French surgeon who was working in the region he took the priest over to The Executioner's table where fire had been set and
he cut off the priest's genitals and burnt them in a fire and he then made a large cut into the priest's stomach and pulled out his internal organs and these were then also burnt in the fire Lampton may have been at this point still alive but then the sergeon used a sharp axe to hack the head off the priest and he finally finished by quartering his corpse cutting off the limbs before these were sent to different towns to be shown but in a macabra Act The Remains such as the head and limbs of Joseph Lampton
were then shown to Edward Walter the other priest to frighten and terrify him he knew what would receive if this was his fate if he did not change his mind but he viewed the remains as relics which were holy the execution of the young priest had been done early on a Monday morning due to a fear of great multitude of people and the authorities were worried that such a brutal sentence would have caused riot and public unrest the north of England was known to have been a more strongly Catholic area and in the decades previous
there were uprisings protesting religious changes made by Elizabeth I's father Henry VII but in the execution of Joseph Lampton it was a harrowing one and it was awful he was hanged drawn and quartered in front of very few people as the execution was carried out at Town MO in Newcastle incredibly early the sentence could have been carried out in private but this was not how punishment worked in the chuda era he was roughly 23 years old when he was executed meaning that Joseph Lampton was one of the youngest priests to have been hanged drawn and
