in the name of the father the son the holy ghost amen the natural law is the structure or the design and the order in which god placed in human nature to incline us towards certain kinds of actions and behavior and the catholic church is the only church now that sustains the natural law as an integral part of the moral code required by god to follow in order to be saved but unfortunately that means that a vast majority of humanity is no longer following the natural law now part of the natural law is that there is
a recognition it's built right into our intellect to be able to judge there are some things or some kinds of behavior they're good and there's some kind of things that are bad and this is a natural inclination people can't help doing it even if they refuse to accept any moral code the fact of the matter is is that they accept certain things they don't so if they don't accept a moral code they'll say you're intolerant if you expect people to follow a moral code right well that's already that intolerance is another way of saying that's
bad right so there's an automatic built into human mind judgment about things that are right and wrong now the problem is that if it's not rooted in the natural law that judgment of what's right wrong then the moral compass gets shifted to what happens interiorly now you've heard me talk about this a little bit already but what we're seeing today is because there is no following of an actual law what is considered moral right and wrong or what's considerably acceptable has completely gone completely gone awry now how did this happen well it happened on a
number of different levels but as to far as to the moral code at least in our culture which is a protestant one what happened is it went awry when the protestants rejected the natural law and in the 20s said that you can use contraception because contraception is contrary to the natural law and once that happens once that happened the protestants lost their moral compass which meant in our culture it started drifting rather clearly in fact but the fact that the protestants rejected the natural lot was bound to happen the reason being is because they don't
have a philosophical underpinning to their moral code at all it's all based upon you know this interior subjective religious experience or however the spirit tends to move me well the problem is there's bad spirits too but the point is is that the objective standard which is the natural law this structure that god built into human nature is no longer the foundation for what's right and wrong this means that it'll start to drift and of course in the legal system in the 30s at least i think that's when it happened then that the supreme court declared
that the natural law is not the foundation for the civil law which basically means that it gets shifted usually to the public opinion or things of that sort but the point is is that that sent the legal system adrift and it also meant that our political system is adrift in that same way now why is this a problem well it's a problem because of the fact that if you take the fact that the natural law is no longer the foundation for people's moral lives but you still have this inclination from the natural law to judge
things that are right and wrong people are judging things that are wrong that are not wrong and then they judge things that are right as not right okay so let's give a couple of examples a classic example it's okay in fact it's considered natural for the person who's born that way to engage in the sin that's proper to or that's not proper but is common in san francisco but lord forbid you should eat a hard high carb meal that's morally sinful to be eating like that going to a fast food restaurant that's bad but in
living with your girlfriend that's good okay now this this is exactly what's happened because the moral cutlass has been completely lost this is what you get or another classic example is you know it's bad to pollute the environment but it's okay that you and your girlfriend are shacking up you know again this is a thing that you just people are just it's just disorder now i'm not suggesting that we shouldn't take proper care of the environment but somehow or another if i'm driving anything other than a hugo somehow it's mortally sinful i mean it's just
disorder another classic example is smoking and drinking the church has always said that these things used in moderation can be good things in fact one of the things that has been systematically held from the public are the hundreds and hundreds of studies done at the collegiate level university level as to the health benefits of smoking those have been systematically kept from the public instead they focus on all the negative aspects and talk about all these people that die from second hand smoke and now third hand smoke and who knows what they're gonna come up with
fourth hand smoke but it's true that the church has said if it starts affecting your health you can't use it but it and then it becomes sinful but if you're smoking and it doesn't affect your health or you get some benefit from it it's a good thing or drinking let's be clear christ changed water into wine not into marijuana now why is that an important point well because you got all this stuff pushing for legalization of marijuana when important fact is marijuana bad no marijuana is a good thing god created it for a reason just
like pio and all these other things that cause these weird things that happen in people's minds but the fact of the matter is that he put them there for a reason people cannot make a distinction between something that is meant according to the natural law for common consumption such as alcohol i mean it's clear from alcohol you can moderate it it has a good health benefit as saint paul says you know titus take a little bit of wine it's good for the stomach the fact of the matter is they can't make a distinction for something
like that that can be consumed regularly but moderately and therefore have the virtue of sobriety and because now they're calling alcohol a drug which is not it can have to have certain effects that are like a drug but it's not the same thing as a drug because why the moral definition of a drug is something which is ordered towards specifically by nature towards your health alcohol is not ordered by nature to its health it's a consumptive food it's like a food it's a drink of the sort so they can't make that distinction so they'll say
things like well the only reason you're against marijuana is because of the fact that it's not legalized no that is not the reason the reason is that and the alcohol is capable being consumed regularly without a detriment to your health but actually good for yourself and it's actually something that has a nutritive value whereas drugs are only to be used when it's ordered towards your health and this is something people don't seem to get and this is again because of the fact that they're not looking at the objective relationship that human the human nature has
to the thing in relationship to alcohol it's one thing relationship to marijuana it's another does this mean we should be against alcohol or marijuana altogether no people who are just categorically ever allowing any use of marijuana in any case whatsoever are unprincipled and the reason being is is because the principal state if the thing benefits your health and if there is a proportionate reason between the negative effect of the drug and the positive effect then it may be morally or may be required to be used marijuana may fall in that category but let's be clear
if you use a drug that alters your consciousness in any way it has always been the teaching of the church that you can find it right in the um the manual of prayers that was commanded the baltimore catechism called rash use of opiates because in that day marijuana wasn't too prevalent but the fact of the matter is to make use of something that actually detains or takes away from reason or has a deleterious effect to your health without a sufficient reason is mortally sinful and that's something people don't seem to get either so again you
got this scenario where something that is recreational use of marijuana which is morally sinful is somehow or another considered okay but the fact that you drink is bad in other words there's just some some fundamental disorientation in people's moral compass today how's it going to get straightened out there's only two ways it's going to get straightened out and both of these things have to occur the first is is that the people of this generation have to get through their thick head that we have to obey god he created us he owns us he keeps us
in existence nothing we have no good nothing we are is not except from him and therefore we owe him everything even the submission of our will which comes from him but the second thing is is that that being the case we can never violate what he has commanded us to do and part of his commandments is this law that he built into the natural law so if we're ever going to regain our moral compass that is what is going to be required in the name
