African Whispers by Chinny
the AKA family lived in the village of umod they were the kind of couple that neighbors pointed to with pride Mr Mrs AKA were dedicated School teachers who treated every child in the village as their own yet despite their professional success They Carried a silent sorrow they had no children for years they tried every remedy suggested by friends and Elders Mrs AKA drank bitter herbal concussions and Mr AKA prayed fervently at every church service they also visited doctors in the nearby Town who offered little hope and so they waited when news of her pregnancy finally
came it was as if the sun had risen twice in one day the couple's Joy peeled into the streets where neighbors joined in celebrating the long awaited blessing when when their son arrived he was named Joshua God has remembered us this child would be special and would lead us to Greatness Mr AKA declared with pride we will raise him to be a doctor he will save lives and bring honor to this family yes his wife agreed he would definitely make us proud and so from that day the Aras began building a vision for Joshua's future
they were very determined he would follow Joshua grew into a bright curious boy with wide eyes and a sense of wonder from the time he could walk he explored every corner of their home and the surrounding Village touching observing and questioning everything his parents marveled at his intelligence he's going to be brilliant Mr AKA said one day as he watched his son stack toy blocks with Precision a mind like his own belongs to Medicine yes Mrs AKA agreed he will wear a white coat one day and people will call him Dr Joshua but as Joshua
grew another Talent began to emerge one his parents had not anticipated he loved to draw by the time he was 3 years old he would grab pens pencils or anything he could find sketching on walls papers or even the Sandy ground outside their home look mama he said one morning holding up a drawing of a goat the image even though crude showed surprising detail for a child his age that is nice my son she replied looking at the paper but you would need to stop wasting time on these things doctors don't draw goats Joshua tilted
his head in confusion why not Mama because doctors save lives she said and one day that is what you will do however Joshua's love for Arts only grew as he got older by the time he was seven his drawings had become more mature and he could spend hours catching scenes from The Village his classmates often marveled at his talents Joshua can you draw me his friend aica asked one afternoon after school okay Joshua said and grabbed his pencil within minutes he had created a striking likeness of aica wow EMA exclaimed you are really good you
should be an artist Joshua greened but when he got home that evening his enthusiasm faded what is this his father demanded holding up a notebook filled with sketches why aren't you using this book for your assignments I already finished my own work Papa Joshua replied I just wanted to draw draw Mr AKA repeated sharply this is not what you should be spending your time on doctors don't waste time drawing but Papa I don't want to be a doctor I like to draw his father's face darkened you don't know what you want you are just a
boy leave this nonsense and focus on your studies Joshua lowered his head sadly but that night he he hid his pencils and papers under his mattress determined to keep drawing in Secrets at every given opportunity the conversation often revolved around Joshua's future his parents spoke of his Destiny with total confidence Joshua do you know what doctors do his mother acts as the Earth they give injections Joshua replied with a frown and injections are painful his father laughed no my boy doctors save lives they help people who are sick but I don't want to be a
doctor Joshua said softly his parents exchanged a glance you will understand when you are older Joshua his father said trust us we are preparing you for greatness Joshua wanted to protest but he had learned that it was useless as Joshua entered Secondary School his parents effort to stare him away from Arts intensified they bought him science books and educational toys hoping to spark an interest in medicine and by the time Joshua reached his final year of secondary school the pressure from his parents had reached its peak his father bought the entrance form into the university
you'll be writing your entrance exams for medical school in one month's time so prepare her father Joshua reluctantly prepared he spent hours pouring over biology and chemistry textbooks but his heart wasn't in it when the results came out he had barely passed but it was enough to secure admission to a medical school the day his acceptance letter arrived his parents celebrated as if they had won a great Victory our son is going to be a doctor his father exclaimed will be Mama doctor and papa Doctor Joshua forced a smile but inside he felt like a
prisoner when it was time to leave for University the Aras gathered at the bus station to see Joshua off his mother packed a box of food items for the journey while his father handed him a stack of science textbooks remember why you are doing this his father said this is for your future yes papa Joshua replied at the University Joshua found himself surrounded by students who were passionate about medicine they discussed anatomy and physiology with excitement while he sat silently sketching in the margins of his notebook Joshua's roommate Peter was the first to notice his
quiet attitude hey Joshua how do you see this place Joshua fored a smile nice and serious so what made you choose medicine Peter asked I have always wanted to be a doctor my mom says I used to play doctor with my siblings when I was a kid Joshua hesitated it is what my parents want for me Peter paused looking at him curiously what's about you is it what you want Joshua Shrugged I guess I don't have a choice Peter laughed slly thinking it was a joke but when Joshua wasn't laughing his smile faded well I
guess you'll figure it out the first lecture hall Joshua entered was packed with students the anatomy Professor a St looking woman in her 60s introduced the course with a mixture of excitement and gravity medicine is not just a career it is a calling a privilege you will be taxed with saving lives there is no greater honor around him students scribbled notes nodding in agreements but Joshua stared blankly at the professor her words bounced off him he flipped to the back of his notebook and began to sketch her face capturing her Stern expression in fine detail
for a brief moment he felt a deep sense of Joy what are you doing Peter whispered peeping at the drawing are you drawing the professor Joshua quickly closed his notebook it's nothing you are good man Peter said but you know you can't sketch your way through medical school right Joshua smiled wickly I know despite his lack of passion Joshua managed to graduate from Medical School it wasn't easy he struggled through exams barely passing his courses and often felt like he was drowning in a sea of expectations but his parents Pride kept him going until he
graduated the graduation was a grand affair with students dressed in Crips gowns and proud families gathered to celebrate the akas were among them and their faces glowed with joy our son the doctor Mr AKA exclaimed shaking Joshua's hands this is the proudest day of Our Lives you have made us so happy his mother added as tears streamed down her face this is what we have always dreamt of with their influence the Aras secured Joshua a housemanship position at a prestigious Hospital under the mentorship of Dr Tony a seasoned surgeon known for his patience and skill
welcome to the team Dr Tony said warly when Joshua arrived for his first day you'll be walking under me observing surgeries and assisting when needed don't worry I will guide you every step of the way thank you sir Joshua said you do fine Dr Tony added surgery is an actart you know it requires Precision patience and practice the word acts caught Joshua's attention but he quickly pushed the thoughts aside this wasn't the kind of art he loved after a year of housemanship Joshua was retained at the hospital but he continued to work as an assistant
shadowing Dr Tony in the operating room he learned the basics of surgery but his heart wasn't in it he avoided taking initiative preferring to let Dr Tony Take the Lead Joshua Dr Tony said one afternoon you have been with me for over a year now when are you going to start stepping up Joshua hesitated I am just trying to learn as much as I can sir you have been observing for long enough Dr Tony said firmly it is time to start putting those skills into practice don't worry I'll be here to guide you Joshua nodded
but the thought of taking responsibility terrified him he felt like an imposter in the operating room pretending to be something he wasn't so he remained contents being in the background until one fful afternoon when the thicking time bomb exploded it was a quiet day at the hospital with no major surgeries shed doed Joshua was reviewing patient files when a nurse bust into the room Dr Joshua she said breathlessly we have an emergency a woman has been rushed in with severe abdominal pain it's a twisted intestine and she needs surgery immediately Joshua froze where is Dr
Tony he's out of town for the medical conference the nurse replied you are the only surgeon available Panic gripped Joshua transfer to another hospital please I can't do this there is no time the nurse insisted the patient is critical if we don't operate now she might die Joshua's heart pounded as he weighed his options his Instinct screamed at him to refuse to run but he knew he couldn't he reached for his phone and called Dr Tony sir there is an emergency he said with a trembling voice a woman needs immediate surgery and I am the
only one here you have been assisting me for over a year now Dr Tony replied calmly you know what to do Joshua trust yourself but sir Joshua began but Dr Tony cut him off do the surgery Joshua you are capable of this the call ended leaving Joshua Fe feeling more alone than ever Joshua stood in the operating room staring down at the unconscious woman on the table the surgical lights illuminated her pale face and the sound of the heart monitor echoed in the sterile silence you can do this Dr Joshua the N said we are
here to assist you Joshua took a deep breath and nodded he dawned his gloves and prepared for the incision his hands trembled as he picked up the scarel okay he said let's begin the first cut was slow and deliberates as he worked the steps he had observed countless times under Dr Tony's guidance came back to his memory the surgical team moved efficiently following his instructions hours passed but Joshua did not even notice his Focus was on one thing saving the woman's life when he finally SED the incision closed he heaved a sigh of relief the
operation was over and the patient was stable the following day Dr Tony the following day Dr Tony returned and called Joshua into his office I heard about the surgery Dr Tony said proudly well done Joshua you saved her life thank you sir Joshua replied coldly Dr Tony studied him for a moment you don't seem happy what is wrong Joshua hesitated I just I I don't feel like I belong here I did the surgery but it didn't feel right Dr Tony frowned Joshua you have the skills you need to believe in yourself medicine is about more
than skill it is about the heart find that and you'll Thrive Joshua nodded but his doubts were still there he knew he didn't have the heart for medicine and no amount of encouragement could change that two weeks after the surgery the hospital received a call that would change everything the woman Joshua had operated on Irene was back with complications Irene was rushed into the emergency room with a swollen stomach a series of tests were run on her but the results were inconclusive her condition baffled everyone nothing pointed to the source of her pain unable to
diagnose the problem the hospital transferred Irene to a larger facility with more Advanced Equipment there an intensive city scan revealed the horrifying truths a surgical scissors had been left in her abdomen during the operation the news hit josua like a thunderbat he sat in Dr Tony's office with his head in his hands as the senior surgeon read the reports a surgical scissors Dr Tony asked with disbelief how could this happen Joshua I don't know sir Joshua whispered I thought I double checked everything double checked Dr Tony said sharply clearly you didn't this is unacceptable do
you understand the gravity of this mistake Joshua nodded in tears I am sorry I didn't mean to too sorry isn't enough Dr Tony said coldly you have jeopardized this Hospital's reputation and a patient life Irene's Family was Furious they filed a lawsuit against the hospital demanding Justice for the negligence that had endangered her life the media caught wind of the story and soon the hospital was at the center of a scandal Joshua was summoned to a disciplinary heing where his medical license was revoked the shame was unbearable his parents who had once been so proud
of him now hung their heads in disgrace Joshua was sentenced to six months in prison for negligence the small cell he was confined to became a place of reflection and bitterness he spent his days replaying the surgery in his mind wondering how he had missed such a crucial Step at night he blamed his parents for pushing him into a career he never wanted during one of their visits his parents sat across from him filled with regret Joshua his mother cried we are so sorry we never made for this to happen we thought we were doing
what was best for you his father added can you forgive us Joshua looked at them with resentment I don't know if I can Joshua's release from prison was bittersweet on the one hand he was free to return to a world he barely recognized but on the other hand he carried the crushing weights of failure and Public Disgrace the once promising son of the AKA family had become the subject of gossip and judgmental glances he returned to his family house and that evening they sat around the dining table to eat but the meal was quiet and
sad finally Joshua's father broke the silence Joshua we are deeply sorry for everything that happened we never wanted this for you Joshua didn't look up you wanted a doctor you didn't care what I wanted his mother's eyes filled with tears we thought we were doing what was best for you we wanted you to have a secure future Joshua smiled bitterly a secure future indeed Look at me now I am a failure I almost killed someone I have ruined your socalled perfect reputation don't say that his mother pleaded you are not a failure you made a
mistake but that doesn't Define you Joshua shook his head no this mistake defines all of us you pushed me into a life I didn't want and now I am paying for it the table fell silent again except for the quiet sound of his mother weeping for weeks Joshua isolated himself in his room avoiding the village and barely speaking to his parents he spent his days staring at the ceiling absentmindedly one afternoon a Maka his childhood friend came to visit he knocked on the door and when Joshua's mother let him in he went straight to Joshua's
room Joshua you look like hell AA said Joshua looked up from his bed thanks for the compliments EMA sat down in the chair by the desk I heard what happened the whole village as but I did not come yet to lecture you then why are you here Joshua said flatly to remind you of who you are EMA replied pulling out a Sketchbook he had brought with him do you remember this Joshua's eyes widened it was one of the sketch books he had filled during Secondary School long before medicine had taken over his life he took
it from a maker's hands and flipped through the pages you were born to draw Joshua AA said gently not to save lives in an operating room but to create something beautiful and you still can do that Joshua stared at the sketches and for the first time in weeks he felt hopeful that evening Joshua dug out his old pencils and sketchbooks and began to draw the lines came hesitantly at first but as the hours passed his confidence returned he drew his parents the garden and the view from his window he felt like himself once again original
the next morning his mother noticed the drawings on the desk and smiled through her tears Joshua this is beautiful you haven't lost your gift he nodded it is the only thing I have ever been good at Joshua's Art became his Refuge helping him process his pain and find purpose he spent hours sketching experimenting with different techniques and creating pieces that reflected his emotions one day a maker returned and mentioned a local artist Club in the nearby town they meet every Saturday in Maka say you should join them it is a supportive group they help each
other grow Joshua hesitated but eventually agreed the first meeting was strange for him but the members welcomed him warmly they were a mix of painters sculptors and illustrators each passionate about their crafts in their midst Joshua felt appreciated and valued over time the club became a second f family they encouraged him to Showcase his work and with their support he began participating in local exhibitions one evening after returning from an exhibition where one of his pieces had been sold Joshua sat down with his parents mama papa I know you wanted me to be a doctor
but I have found my purpose in arts his father nodded slowly we see that now Joshua we we are very sorry for trying to force our dreams on you his mother smiled we are proud of you no matter what you do for the first time in years Joshua felt a sense of peace with his parents and the rift between them began to heal his Arts gained recognition over time he was invited to larger exhibitions and even began receiving commissions his name became synonymous with vibrant Arts that celebrated African culture and life his parents now proudly
introduced themselves as mama and papa Joshua the artist and their home was filled with his work thank you for watching the story kindly share your thoughts about this story in the comment section give this story a thumbs up and share with your loved ones subscribe for more interesting story thank you and remain blessed
