Hi everyone, it's Agnieszka Murdoch from 5-Minute Language. Welcome to my channel in this video we will be talking about the 20 most common english phrasal verbs so the 20 phrasal verbs that you definitely need to know if you want to speak english with confidence but before we start i want you to leave me a comment and tell me do you think learning english phrasal verbs is easy or difficult what do you think leave me a comment now so let's get this video started the first phrasal verb i want to explain is to give up so
i gave up sugar last month which means i stopped eating sugar to give up is usually used to talk about habits or negative things that we do that we want to stop doing such as smoking or eating sweets for example so you can say my friend has given up smoking she has stopped smoking to look after to look after means to care for somebody you can look after a child for example or you can look after somebody's pet for example when they go away on holiday so last sunday i was looking after my friend's cat
because they were away on holiday so i was taking care of the cat to bring up to bring up means to care for somebody for a child until they grow up so often this phrasal verb is used in the passive voice so for example i was brought up in the countryside which means i grew up in the countryside that's where my family lived and that's where they raised me so to bring somebody up is to look after them while they're a child and until they grow up and become an adult to call off means to
cancel something so for example my meeting at work was called off it was cancelled usually we use call-offs to talk about things that were scheduled and then they didn't happen because the person who organized them canceled them to carry on means to continue doing something so for example i was really discouraged when i first started learning english because it was difficult but i carried on learning it means i continued to learn despite being a little bit demotivated to look forward to it means to wait for something impatiently when you're excited about something so for example
i'm really looking forward to my holiday and this phrasal verb is often followed by a verb with an ing ending so for example i look forward to meeting you next week to put off means to postpone something so for example you've got an arrangement you're supposed to be meeting somebody but your meeting has been put off it has been postponed so instead of meeting next week you're going to meet in two weeks time to break down to break down means to stop working so usually it's used for things that are quite mechanical for example cars
cars can break down so if your car breaks down it means it stops working and you're not able to drive it anymore so you can say my car has broken down or i was delayed on the train because the train broke down it stopped working it couldn't go anywhere to find out is the next one it means to discover something or to learn about something so for example i need to find out where the best cafe is in this town so i arrived yesterday and i need to learn where the best cafe is i need
to find out sometimes it's also used in the passive voice and when somebody is found out it means they were trying to do something secretly but somebody found out about their secret so they were found out to get by means to manage to do something with the bare minimum so for example it's often used when you talk about foreign languages so somebody can ask you do you speak french and you can answer i get by in french which means i managed to have a basic conversation but just a basic one it's okay i can manage
you can also use it when you're talking about money so you can have little money but you still get by which means you manage to pay your bills and buy food even though you just have the very bare minimum to grow up means to get older so for example i grew up in a big city so this means when i was a child when i was getting older and becoming a teenager or an adult i was living in a big city that's where i grew up to run out of something means to use all of
it so you don't have any left so for example you can run out of milk i ran out of milk this morning so i couldn't have my coffee it means i had already used up all of the milk and there was nothing left i have run out of milk to work out means to exercise so for example i like working out in the morning which means i like to exercise in the morning there is also a noun which is work out and it means your exercise routine so for example i did a very difficult workout
this morning which means the exercise routine that i followed was very difficult to get away with something means to escape punishment it means that you do something wrong and normally there are consequences or punishment but you managed to escape it so maybe nobody found out that you did something wrong or there were just no consequences so for example i got away with not doing my homework yesterday which means the teacher didn't really mind there were no consequences of that action for me to give something away means to give something to somebody for free or to
donate something so for example you can say that you're clearing out your closet and you're going to give away all of your clothes all of the clothes that you're not wearing anymore so you can give them away it means you give them for free you can take them to a charity shop or give them to a friend but essentially you're not selling them you're just passing them on for free there is a noun as well it's giveaway and you can see it on social media quite a lot a giveaway is basically usually a competition where
you can get something for free somebody is giving away some things or prizes for free to let down means to disappoint so usually it's used in the passive voice you can say i was really let down by my friend's behavior i was really disappointed i was let down you can also say my friend really let me down he really disappointed me he didn't help me when i needed help so he let me down there is also a noun it's let down and it means disappointment so for example i was really looking forward to watching this
new film but it was a real letdown it was a real disappointment i really didn't like the film it wasn't good it was a letdown to put up with something means to tolerate something that is perhaps a little bit annoying but you tolerate it you put up with it so for example my neighbors are renovating their house it's very noisy but i can put up with it i can tolerate the noise even though it's inconvenient and a little bit annoying i don't mind too much i can tolerate it i'm not super happy about it but
i can put up with it to set something up means to organize something or arrange something so for example you can set up a meeting which means you you organize the meeting for you and other people so i set up a meeting for me and my colleagues yesterday you can also set up an organization or you can set up a company it means you create it you organize it and it comes to exist to throw something away means to dispose of something or just put it in the bin so for example i had some fruit
that had gone off in the fridge so i had to throw it away i had to put it in the bin and finally to break up means to end a relationship so for example my sister and her boyfriend have broken up it means they ended their relationship so i hope you enjoyed this video those were the 20 most commonly used english phrasal verbs and don't forget to leave me a comment to tell me do you find phrasal verbs easy or difficult i'm really interested to find out what you think and i will see you in
