But did you know that, in addition to the game going viral among YouTubers, it also gained fandom animations and even a funk version? The independent game, created by Vietnamese developer 2OO2, was released on October 9, 2024.
Bad Parenting is just 30 minutes long and its aesthetics are inspired by the cartoon Courage the Cowardly Dog. The game tells the story of a boy and his abusive parents, and went viral after its release, due to famous content creators who played and shared their reactions, receiving millions of views both abroad and in Brazil. In short, Bad Parenting follows the story of Ron, a child who lives with neglectful parents.
His mother works all day and only comes home at night, while his father, who spends his time drinking, takes out his frustrations on Ron. What many didn't expect was the twist: Ron's father, Mr Red Face, is the one who kills him in a fit of rage. After a fight with the mother, who announced the divorce, the father enters his son's room drunk, with the mother only finding the son after 14 days, which is how many times the door in the intro opens.
And this musical introduction is called Old Yazoo, by the group The Boswell Sisters, and became a landmark of the game, being a song from the 1930s that became associated with the door opening scene in the intro. Many YouTubers were initially excited by the song, but after the game's twist, their reactions completely changed as shown in this viral edit, being called the Bad Parenting effect. The song became so notable that, on October 22, 2024, DJ CEREJASS released a funk version of it, generating a trend of edits, especially related to football, with the skull emoji.
Furthermore, the game's creator shared behind-the-scenes footage of the famous door scene and confirmed that Bad Parenting 2 is in development, with a release date scheduled for 2024. The game, even without having such great visual quality, was a success, not only for its plot about abusive parents, but also for its intro song, which became a symbol of the game and went viral as a funk song and in thousands of edits.
