color in design is a very difficult topic for some people especially if you're new to graphic design which colors do you use for which logos why do certain logos have certain colors and what is the psychology behind these colors well today in this video i'm going to be giving you an outline of basically design color theory without most of the nitty gritty parts i'm going to give you what you need to know about how to choose your brand's color or how to choose a brand color for a client easily segment of this video is sponsored
by warling so something that you may not know is that color actually influences the way that someone sees something for instance the color red is a coca-cola color coca-cola uses color all the time in their branding and if you're a designer and you're starting out or even if you're a long-time designer you might think as to why well there are psychological tricks that are happening within branding branding in itself and marketing is all manipulation tactics when we design logos it's important to have the right color on the logo to make it fit within the industry
that we're trying to break into so how do you choose your brand color well first of all you need to know the mission of your brand you need to know what kind of personality your brand is for instance apple they are about simplicity and simplicity and design and ease of use and cleanliness they use the color white which is a strange color for a lot of brands to use they use the color white nearly on everything and that is their brand showing through their personality about keeping things simple you may have heard of the coca-cola
red color and that stands for passion excitement and a sense of importance and coca cola have had that red color for such a long time that it just stands today now but before you need to know all the color theory the first thing you need to make sure is to know what your brand's personality is for instance for my brand it's more of an infotainment on youtube so it's more about me showing you guys how to do something in a hopefully an entertaining format for my client work it stands to be a more youthful more
exciting playful and friendly brand and that's because of the way that the logo is designed in the new logo which you may not have seen and the colors that we use now you know your brand's personality it's time to look through some of the colors and how they influence people black is powerful it's edgy and luxurious it gives a modern but also a classic feeling too if you go for a gray color it stands to be neutral maybe classic serious subdued maybe mature it could also be masculine we've already talked about white but again white
simplicity cleanliness high-end maybe affordable so you'll see a lot of companies like cosmetic companies using this color along all their products brown is like an earthy color like down to the ground sort of person like you would see someone gardening or something you know getting your hands dirty it's more like an old-fashioned mood pink is feminine so i'm not saying that as a weird thing but i'm saying it is a feminine color with branding it also influences a modern vibe or gives a modern vive to it and also an innocence and youthful vibe purple you've
seen rarely but most of the time you'll see purple in a creative agency because it means creativity but be warned it can mean luxury as well and that goes back to how we used to get purple this color you'd only see it in luxury or royals if you go for dark blue it stands for professionalism it's very formal so you see a lot of banks using dark blue it's meant to stand for being mature and more trustworthy than others light blue is openness and being trustworthy if your company stands on these two things then you
could go for the openness and trustworthiness green is another one that you'll see in a lot of banks and places where you'll give money because it shows stability it's like a connection to nature as well so you'll see a lot of prosperous a lot of growth marketing in green yellow is a huge one nowadays in the modern vibe and it gives off a modern edge it also means playful excitable youthful the great thing about the color yellow is that it's attention grabbing you'll see me using it in a lot of thumbnails and that's for the
reason that it stands really well against white and black orange again it gives a bit of playfulness a bit of creativity also a bit of friendliness in there and that's what i use my brand colors for want to look friendly and red it's a double-edged sword it could be anger it could be passion and it signifies importance as well people look at me it's red so you've got danger as well because of the stop lights and the red stop signs that we all know red means danger that's inbuilt in us so those are the core
colors in brand identity how do you choose your color well you basically run through this list if you want to be very surface level obviously this is not the way to do it if you're very serious about brand design these colors give a inkling like an idea as to what you could go through but it's super important also to try out different colors let's try an example we've got a gardener they could go for a brown and green color because the grass and everything that they work with is brown and green it makes a lot
of sense if they go for like a white color it seems a bit strange or even a yellow one you wouldn't ever expect a gardener to have a logo with a yellow logo on it just doesn't fit it doesn't fit right if you go to a solicitor's firm obviously you wouldn't see them in comic sans because the typography has to generally be either modern or you know stand up to the test of time with serifs but you'll see a lot of the time that they're black gold or gray you won't see many solicitors big high
firms or anywhere that takes it very seriously with bright yellow you know pink or that it doesn't make sense you shouldn't have a pink logo with a solicitor and people would see that clear as day if they did have a pink logo so it might actually work in their favor to be fair now the way that i come up with bringing colors together there are many videos that i've put out about colors and how you can choose them and i'd invite you to go ahead and look at them down below however if you're struggling to
find a color for your brand or choose even a color scheme it's actually quite simple there are websites like coolers where you can go on there and generate colors lock one in and keep generating other ones that's a good way of creating new colors if you're trying to work out the contrast between two colors like the background and the foreground then what i would suggest to do is a great trick that's been around for quite some time is go ahead put the two colors together and then change the background and the whole thing into grayscale
if there's not enough contrast you'll see that the grays will sort of merging together but if there's enough contrast you'll be able to see it in the sort of black and white view you can also create a color scheme for your brand by taking two complementary colors together so you've got your main and your sub color that you bring in and use the blend tool inside of illustrator to merge them together blend them together and you've got a bunch of colors in this giant gradient that you can use now if you're a designer and you're
looking to do some brand identity then it's important to have an app or a way of communicating with your clients whether that's through a brief or whether that's taking a contract or bringing in some work or some ideas it's important to be able to communicate with clients especially now that we're working from far far away or working from home but walling is an app that does exactly that walling is a visual workspace that helps teams and professionals organize and share ideas you can use walling to organize all your creative work and collaborate more efficiently with
