hello everyone welcome to another episode of two set talks and today we have a very special guest Chloe CH hello so chlo what have you been up to recently I've just released my second album which is the butterfly lovers fall in conto and Panini fall in conto number one inde yeah is that the one with the the famous Cadenza the really hard yeah sorry video right yeah oh we tried to yeah so that's coming out I mean we're filming this now so next week for us right yes yeah don't know when this podcast is going

to be out but that's exciting yeah I love it actually I have a gift for you which is this album whoa no [Music] way does everyone see it that's not you that's me but that's not you where where are your bangs that's someone else H yeah I actually wanted bangs for this pck but it wasn't it wasn't suitable so they just like flip it to one yeah oh so you didn't get a different haircut they just flipped it yeah yeah of course not nice nice nice That's super cool yeah can we get an autograph sure

sure I can sign it oh yes that'll be amazing go two two set violin all the podcast listeners without the video is just like the silence oh that's a nice signature why is a signature cleaner than ours thank you no problem did did you actually practice your autograph I used to and then now it's just like Chloe so I'm just like writing it yeah like anyhow I want did you ever practice your autograph I tried to but I never I thought it looked really good really thank you it's like really okay I I did I

did practice it but then I noticed it was like not always that consistent yeah so sometimes the curve is like wider or The Loop is a little bit bigger no sometimes I'll get really nervous and I'll be like yeah yeah and and you forget how you start like do I do this or do I do this yeah yeah exactly and then ruins a flow yeah yeah I just feel so weird like sitting alone by myself in my room this feels so weird I think I am yeah to be honest I still feel weird giving out

autographs yeah I don't know I just it's like can s like sure and I you just some want to ruin it yeah mine's always looks pretty different every time different every single one is different to put it but um and if if you're signing a lot too right yeah exactly like you keep going keep going it's just things happen this is valuable limited edition you guys can go get it but we got the signed version so yeah that's right you guys will miss out flexing wow thank you so how was it like um recording this

what was the experience like was actually really exciting I actually recorded the Paganini fist in last year September yeah oh wow last year September yeah okay and then I had one month break during October for my exams and stuff mhm and in November I recorded the butterfly lovers fing con wow yeah so in the midst of having my exam I also had to prepare these two pieces that is crazy all right so by the way our upstairs neighbor is drilling so I'm really hoping that you guys can't hear it but if you can this is

now the two set drilling podcast Yes actually back on this recording chlo I'm curious it depends on how long I have but for the Paganini I think I spent less than a month for the preparation for the recording and the concert yeah less less than a month from but what do you mean preparation had you already learned the piece before or you one month from the first time you've seen the music I mean of course I heard it before but last time I I used to play only the first few pages but it was wasn't

it was just like s through so it wasn't really oh wow so one month since you first started looking properly yeah and also correct me if I'm wrong was your recording also a live performance yes so I had to do um live recording and this audio like video and audio and I had concerts as well oh my so okay so some people like when they record it's just an audio recording and they do like 20 takes and then like oh yeah splice the favorite bits but yours you actually performed it live as well yeah I

did actually I did both but for the video I think it was just one take through guys you guys don't understand like if you don't play vland you will never understand like how crazy it is to learn Pagan con one month and also plus recording it in like in a live okay so walk me through like in that month what cuz you also at school dur did you take time off school or were you still studying yeah I was still studying because my exams were in October yeah yeah okay so what was your daily life

looking like during that period just practice study eat sleep that's all do you still go to school like between 8 8 or 9 to whatever or oh no actually my classes are like tuition yeah so it was basically at most like one and a half hours so pagy was like a side quest maybe maybe maybe okay but then when you're practicing let's say okay I'm assuming you practice 40 hours a day obviously but H how like how do you even approach a piece like that like what what's going on in your mind and senses and

everything when you're looking at the packan do you remember like when the first time you looked at it from that month just like huh and he go bam actually the first thing I looked at in the coneto was the cad Daner because I was just flipping through and I was like yeah this is the hardest CAD Daner ever like how am I going to do this like I was just planning planning things out in my head and see how it's was going to play this section and then just like play it once through get the

best effect I definitely don't do that I just St on the first note and just hope I can get through it same I'm always I start I love starting from the beginning and when it gets hard I stop interesting so you start from the hardest part I started looking at the score from the hardest part but when I practice it's from the first movement okay yeah so what's the difference between looking at the score versus practicing well when you look at its score I guess you could like you can clear up your mind and then

think about how you want to play like this section or this movement so you don't have distractions such as intonation like how the Boe goes you know when you have like upbow Stato you're always like so distracted about how you do it perfectly mhm like when you look at a score you can just think about how you want to portray this piece to the audience interesting so you're already thinking about your interpretation before you even practice you haven't you don't even touch your VIN yet yeah I'll be like giving s a basic kind of plan

mhm yeah and when I play okay that's interesting so I mean I can just say we don't do that so we probably should what mean I do that are you do I plan all my I'm joking I'm Jing you no way okay so then my next question is how long is your planning process like and how do you plan like do you listen to recordings you look at the score what does that planning look like for you yeah so when I look at the schore half of the time will be me just thinking about how

I want it to be and then the other half will be me listening to recordings and learning from how others do it and then how I can input them into my plane for me I think the planning takes about maybe the first half of my whole preparation and then the next half will be consolidating and then just be like preparing for the concert so I'm just like making sure everything is the same every time I play yeah I think we have the same question right yeah can I just clarify wait you have four weeks in

one month yeah and so the first half is just preparation you just like looking you don't practice for the first two weeks you're just look oh I do I do practice I you mean like just looking at school for two weeks no no no of course not there some fre high IQ you're just like planning you can see the future like like dror strange the second violence is always going to be late in this bar so I have to pre them can never might have to like do something Trum burs will be too loud here

yeah the Vias the Vias always the Vias Okay no Okay so so you're planning two weeks but you're kind of practicing as well yeah so in the midst of practicing I'll be having like some time off and I'll just be like flipping through my scores okay and then but so you're assuming in two weeks time you kind of really know what you want musically from the yeah okay during that first two weeks I'm just so curious like on a given day is it like 30 minutes is it like 3 hours what does that look like

how much of studying needs to happen it depends on how much time I have in that day okay yeah if I'm busy maybe a bit shorter M but if I have the day like fully free it might be like 1 Hour 2 hours okay yeah that's actually a significant amount of time yeah cuz like recordings take a lot of time like you have to hear carefully and every detail yeah and then so you listen you look like what's an example like do do you mark your ideas definitely so what type of things are you usually

marking um I could say I could write like for this performance that person like took some time here like the rubat and the interpretation will be different for each section mhm wait wait my brain is lagging she she's getting too much memories now like all the recording you know what she's thinking she's just making it up so just sounds more she I just looked at it I a I got to make it sound like this St yeah know but yeah I'll just mark down like what different people do yeah and yeah interpretation so you might

be like o TR did this yeah but I won't exactly copy because I'll just do it from my point of view like s of you know that Mak sense and I'll just put it in my playing and see how things go if it doesn't sound that nice I'll just maybe change it somehow for sure yeah no I think that makes sense I feel like I mean you know we make videos we do like T parel designing even just talking to directors and stuff you notice a big part of the creative process is actually just doing

your research gaining inspiration like these artists come up with like the biggest mood boards and like all that and that's like the musician's equivalent right so for example when I remember when we're doing that caner [Music] um and then you like go into it right yeah so I'm guessing was that like inspired of a sudden recording that you heard yeah I guess I listened to one of the older recordings but that one was mainly my own interpretation cuz it's a cadenza and you can basically have like your free time or your creative creativity so I

decided to do more of my own things in that kader okay yeah okay so let's just go back so you're like two weeks of planning and practicing like go through it then the second half that's when you say you start getting serious like what not getting serious like just consolidating oh consolidating so what is just making sure you can consistently consistent once you decided how you want to play by that second to third week crossover you can already play all the notes notes I mean for me or from day one you dude you know she

got from day for me I guess the biggest problems are the notes but how I want to convey the music to the audience like how I want to how I want this piece to be told can't relate but yeah yeah I get it yeah no but it's true though it's true for me if I was to do Paganini it'll be like first month trying to play the first page notes second month trying to learn the notes to the second page third month realizing my bow technique sucks and so like doing open strings for a whole

month four months like maybe I shouldn't do this I should do something easier five months like regrets regrets no true but actually what Chloe said back to what she said like the interpretation part I remember my teachers and stuff they all say it's the most difficult part some ways and it's very unique it's very because you got to make it convincing as well right and it's only yourself that has this own interpretation so no one can copy it actually yeah so I have a question because this reminds me of a conversation we had with James

Andis oh yeah where we were like do you have a you know favorite finalist right now that you kind of look up to and he's just like mean not really because I can kind of do whatever I want on the violence if I wanted to play like someone I would just play like someone yeah so he kind of just takes bits and pieces kind of like you right so are you do you feel like you're also at that level where anything you wanted to do you could do is just a matter of trying to figure

out what you want to do with the music yeah I'm still like figuring out like like with the stuff I have but I was definitely I'm definitely not I'm definitely you're good I'm definitely not as good as James anus yet because he's like really good and I have still a lot to learn so I'm just still exploring we're also not quite there yet to James and we have a lot to learn well we we'll get there one day one day see for me it's like cuz for I how you feel but for me it's like

I'll listen to recording I'm like I like that I'm GNA do that yeah that's not me too I'm like [ __ ] what happened there yeah I was like doesn't sound quite right yeah okay did do you still at this point think about technical things I mean when there is a need to of course okay so for you like when's an example when is an example of you need to yeah like those places that needs more Focus or concentration yeah just say really difficult places right yeah but cuz normally I practice technique with music because

if you practice without music it's like when you input the music inside the technique it yeah it Chang so it's not going to work you're right actually um the con Master SSO Sydney syy once told us that you think she should always practice technique in with the music as well other is isolated isolated it's too it's being it's too isolated and when the time comes it's very different yeah that makes sense it's also like if you think differently once you want to become emotional your body reacts differently up anyway it's just different right yeah it's

like being on stage it all changes you're like yeah makes sense yeah okay so I'm curious then during that time you're also studying mhm which was harder Paganini or your studies I say both had its own difficulties oh my God which which subject was the hardest for you math math Sagan was easier oh my God math math was fun but it's not fun in next yeah he Eddie Eddie you're good at math math any day over a Paganini yeah wow I mean I prefer practicing but for me math is way easier wow D I struggled

with math well what what what you doing for M like quadratics differentiation yeah basically off that integration yeah I don't even know what that is I remember hearing those words and I switched off I like matrices what a honestly I've forgotten like all the rules as well like how to sign I was going to say you could become a math tutor for two sets here oh I mean there's plenty of YouTube channels existing out there I don't think you need to hear that from me do you remember the quadratic formula yeah negative B plusus square

root of B oh yeah oh my gosh that one Dam I'm nervous right no negative B plusus the otk of b^ 2 - 4 a c/ 2 way is that right I hope so too s I'm going to check it right now 31 for5 92654 o you know it exists on the calculator though right damn qu yes I got it right you actually got right nice that's the only thing I but I don't remember what it does like how to use it anymore right like when to use it honestly quadratics was was pretty tough because

you didn't draw correctly no it wasn't draw correctly but you have to be really specific and if you cross like just one line on the graph it's wrong yeah it's almost like the violin right just so yeah like the intonation you just put place the one wrong place is wrong yeah yeah relable yeah okay so how do you juggle doing that Paganini and in school do you think this is a like do you feel like you have a normal childhood actually from your perspective I'm curious I mean I'm feeling pretty okay so I I guess

everything's fine yeah yeah I mean I know people in Singapore just like all the kids apparently just work super hard right like it's just normal here they study song I don't think I would ever be able to do that honestly in Australia it's just like like 300 p.m. and everyone just goes to the playground and plays there's no homework there's literally like no homework there's no homework no there's no homework like L homework takes like 10 minutes homework is invented by after school tutoring the Asian parents are like my kids are doing nothing our parents

send us to after school cheing Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday like anytime they could cram Us in anything math okay you're done you want to get English tutoring okay you go get some chemistry toring yeah Chinese toring on Sunday mornings MH no one on a weekday or Sunday morning yeah yeah but from school that's crazy yeah that's right blown she's like no way yeah no way I've never heard such thing called no homework no like we one assignment for like a turn yeah it's like they give you a whole two months to write the assignment but

we'll just cram in the last two days two months yeah how much how much time do you guys usually get to write like for homework yeah it's like you go yeah every day you have to hand up the next day at most like they'll give you a deadline it never that Australia will just quit like I mean like we get some homework but honestly to me it's like so like little bit it doesn't feel like but fa though you got like op1 top grade so it's no but like even for you right like it's not

like you spent ages doing school homework I just didn't do it I'm kidding I'm kidding exp no I did I did I did it wasn't that bad just I'm say that oh yeah um okay okay maybe we exaggerating bit there there was a little bit of homework but the the typical Aussie kids lifestyle was after school they hang out they socialized I think socializing was a very big part of the culture and I remember having this talk with my mom actually talk about this now but um I had a little bit of a disagreement with

my mom because all my Aussie friends were doing this thing called sleepovers oh where they're like every few weeks they get together they they have a sleepover they eat some like cook some cookies brownies and then they'll watch like a movie play some games I'm like oie friends are doing it and they're like Eddie you should come and so I ask my mom and she's like no you're not going like and then I was for a while I was like okay fair but then as I grew old like 15 I was kind of like come

on I'm already 15 can I go and she's like what's the point what what purpose and I'm like it's to socialize so I can have friends I remember I'll always remember this I'm so sorry M talking about you but I get both sides to be fair I get both sides you guys your sole purpose right now is your academic studies you don't need friends yeah yeah actually that that's like really typical to hear it's quite typical it's actually really typical to hear that I I get it though yeah I get it D like I see

both sides yeah but that's that's funny though that's very funny so that's kind of the Aussie culture versus yeah you're doing Paganini while doing quadratics at the same time do you think you could play Paganini and do the quadratic form no such no math is math math I'll just be like holding my violin and be like yeah how am I going to draw this graph oh my God sorry guys one second I just remembered what bubble tea oh to your place yes we got some bubble tea delivery dude sorry guys for the disruption we had

know me know when I wake up the first hour I'm basically dysfunctional Dead zombie especially before my coffee right so going down the elevator someone came in with a bike and they recognized me and they're like oh you're toet like yeah and it's just she's going in with her bike right and I was like cuz it's taking a while so I was like oh I need to hold the door open for it and I pressed the wrong one and I shut the door on and the bike and then she just kind of looked at me

like I'm like oh I'm so sorry I'm so sorry he said then the rest of the lift we went down we chatted a little bit and as she was getting out same thing right so I'll be nice I'll open for again this time but I pressed the wrong one again and it merely shot on her and she was just like I felt so but I always want to apologize so please if you're watching this I did not mean to shut got slam the door into you and your precious bike twice yeah yeah close trying to

know we didn't say that he I think sometimes they kind of look he didn't yeah I think he just saw us and we kind of saw but we ran past him we running cuz we running yeah and then but then we just kept running and then eventually I stopped cuz I got like winded out so I need a break and then this guy comes on I'm pretty sure that's a guy who ran past like two 300 meters ago so he was like running behind us and you're sweating very fit he was very fit nice and

he wasn't even running wearing like running shoes no he was wearing like working out like corporate yeah so imagine wearing corporate clothes the outoors there a backpack he's just running I was like wow yeah he I thinking these guys are slowest Runners they're useless oh wow okay and then you did your exams mhm what's your best subject at school biology oh yeah I actually love it cuz it's my interest as well okay yeah have you done I didn't do biology and you you did take science I did chem physics maths b matth c English music

music extension which is weird because usually we only do six subjects but I do seven subjects overachiever Flex don't flex on don't flex I yeah I should have the typical Asian kid moms look up until until you did music I'm joking well I mean I can't learn pan in one month so I had to say something to feel better about myself and he had to say it so so he feels like he's but okay and I got I got perils for myself so I feel bad about myself but biology is very correlated to like doing

Med right because medicine is like biology is very correlated do you have any thoughts of ever becoming a star Asian med student has that ever has I thought ever crossed your mind maybe not in Mets but just exploring more about like the DNA type of stuff oh okay like just the genes and you know those Gene modifications interesting how many genomes in a human body why are you testing me right now I don't know the answer to that I actually have no idea how many chromosones in the human yes it's unlocking a raw memory wait

so yeah cuz I remember once I left my textbook at home so was sharing and then so the teacher said oh read through these three pages right cuz he could teacher couldn't even bother teaching so he just like read the textbook and so I got down to halfway through the first page he already wanted to turn the second page no way that's fast and you're fast though I want to say I'm a fast reader oh but at least I know for a fact the way you recall memory like like he Eddie can read and understand

it yeah but um but he's fast fun yeah he's so almost said the same but and so I remember like in when 15 he'll just be like so I read about this thing called the heat death of the universe right what's that say yeah the entropy laws means eventually one of the three theories the universal just freeze and all that I'm like bro how do you know this stuff yeah so I think I'm getting a bit off we should go back to packing oh how about butterfly lovers how that we talk about butterfly lover oh

yeah I was still having my exams during the butterfly lovers MH but I was so lucky because I think for that whole week I didn't have exams until the next week so I had this one whole week just for my concert and my preparations and my recordings you did butterfly lovers in one week um no no no like I started learning it like in October so with my exams yeah and then I performed it stressful I performed it start of November yeah okay I love how Chloe say a week is a lot of time the

exams I mean for preparations for kinds of preparations are you right Eddie okay out of the two pieces though how how would you describe kind of its own challenges were there any challenges was this just like for you mean for for both yeah Panini was more of techniques and stuff and I guess for butterfly it's about the emotions because it's a Chinese piece and it's romantic in a Chinese way because the ancient Chinese people they express love in a really ambiguous way like they don't just straight up say I love you they'll say like oh

your eyes are like something something yeah they'll just really get into details but they won't really say it that was one part which was actually quite interesting and I was trying to bring that up in my playing because it's not like as if you're playing other Western romantic pieces there's something really different about it but it's just so small it makes such a difference okay can give an example basically one of the examples was during time who who is the female main character has to leave L Shan which is the male main character and then

so at that point of time L Shan didn't know that Jing Tha was a female but they had like feelings for each other because they spent a few years together studying and like having fun and then they basically just enjoyed each other's company MH and then when they had to leave there's like this feeling how do you say it in English like P oh sa Sab likea yeah yeah it's like oh you're testing my translation skills um no sometimes I just feel like Chinese can just bring out that feeling but I can't find the word

yeah it's like you can't bear to part way and that there's this kind of feeling where you're just like wishing that person won't go it's it's like a breakup in a way right or like leaving like a farewell but no not a breakup because um [ __ ] has to go back home because the parents said there was some emergency but just a marriage with another guy she didn't like oh really yeah so actually why does it sound like a K drama yeah it actually it actually kind of sounds like K drama there's another person

love triangle sa is so hard to explain yeah is there's certain words you can't explain English actually yeah it does remind me though I know like cuz Japanese culture is similar as well um you you never say things to directly yeah and so I mean this was this was something I learned on the internet so I never fact checked it but apparently there was a poem where instead of saying like I love you the guy said like the Moon looks so beautiful tonight oh together outside the Moon looks so beautiful and the conation is like

you are beautiful I love you or something but it's that kind of like there's layers in between and feel that feeling through the subtlty because we're not meant to say it so directly um what what have you had to do with this it's like damn the vibe is smelly the Moon looks pretty bad today hey like I smell something yeah just you know what I mean and so be like like trying to interpret what they try to say that's that's a funny thing right like sometimes you want to say something you don't want to be

rude yeah so some people are of the belief they just say it honestly but other people are like they got to be empathetic for their feelings right so like let's say imagine today someone had like really stinky breath would you tell them I mean like stunk like stinks so when I go the whole room the whole room just goes boom what' you tell him um this may or may not be there can be a few Solutions I can buy brass mins for that person but I'll be like oh it's a gift that I got on

the way here no you have one you give one to them too hey do yeah yeah that's more subtle subtle but then some people don't get that right like some people will be like oh am I but then other people might be like oh yeah I'll have a no actually maybe like to make it even more subtle I'll eat it first so it's that's mean you have one and you give one to that yeah so when you eat it it's like not dead okay but what if the person goes no I don't want one oh

or maybe he has it but he doesn't real he or she doesn't realize it's um you're telling them that they're breast things cuz ideally you want them to go to the dentist or something right like to fix my hair my hair is tingling with a weird Aura what is that I don't know the Moon is so to think of like Poetic stuff to try and tell people you know but that's interesting though I've never thought about that too but I mean it makes sense right like sometimes with music if you're overly exaggerated and dramatic in

your expression it feels too performative it's like I remember my teacher my first teacher you just say it's like you're being a clown on stage it's not real yeah yeah yeah when when it becomes like it's beyond what you're trying to say in the music and it's like you're trying to oversell it with yeah but it's tricky because other times you do also have to exaggerate in the music other people don't hear it yeah you have to have like a balance a good balance between being performative and having this sense of like you can hold

back and not be being too performative CU I feel like there's two types of perform is my theory one is that very extroverted and you're like projecting this energy into the audience and I feel like the second type of performer is the one that draws you in oh yeah and they they don't they feel like they're just kind of playing the thing here but then like you lean for the seat I'm getting Goosebumps like legit thinking about you got goosebumps cuz no it's true when I hear performance they draw you in I'm like wo that's
