today's video topic is the difference between food allergy and intolerance food allergy and intolerance are two different conditions but they can have very similar symptoms so many people get confused trying to differentiate between them so what is the difference food allergy a food allergy is when your body has an immune reaction to a particular food it can be something that other people normally eat without any problem but for some reason your body sees it as a threat so it triggers an immune response the reaction can be mild symptoms like a rash or some itchiness vomiting
and diarrhea or it can sometimes be severe and cause serious symptoms like trouble breathing or swelling of the throat in severe cases it can even be life-threatening if you have a food allergy you need to be careful and avoid the food that causes the reaction the foods that have the highest chance of causing this reaction are soybeans milk fish peanuts and eggs sometimes you will need to read the food labels carefully or ask a lot of questions when you're eating out it can be a hassle but it's important to do because even a tiny amount
of the offending food can cause a reaction food intolerance intolerance on the other hand is when you can't digest a particular food properly it's different from an allergy in that your body doesn't see the food as a threat instead your body has trouble breaking down and absorbing the food this is because your body doesn't have enough of the needed enzymes to digest certain types of food this is known as enzyme deficiency intolerance can cause some of the same symptoms as an allergy like stomach pain diarrhea and vomiting but it's usually not as severe and it's
not life-threatening if you have a food intolerance you might be able to eat small amounts of the food without any problem or you might need to avoid it all together it depends on how severe your intolerance is so what's the difference between food allergy and food intolerance an allergy is when your body sees the food as a threat and has an immune reaction to a food and an intolerance is when your body can't digest the food properly both can cause similar symptoms but an allergy is usually more severe and can be life-threatening if you have
