a job I had gotten at the end of high school and when I started college I went back to work every summer since it was close to my parents house then one summer right when I came home from college I saw that there was a new girl named Cara she was about my age not very tall and had dark hair I didn't really know much about her although we store clerks were few maybe about seven people at most I remember we worked in two shifts with some at the cash register and others distributed around the
store I have no idea when exactly Cara was hired but when I arrived we started working together I was usually on the cashier and in other sections and although I talked to her a couple of times we didn't get to be very close overall she seemed like a nice person but she wasn't the kind of person I would stay and talk to a lot so we didn't have much contact one night it was our turn to go out at the same time it was around 9:00 p.m. and I had been in the sports Department while
she was in charge in another section as we were leaving she asked me if I had come by car and I said yes then bluntly she asked me the favor of giving her a ride home not wanting to seem uncool I told her it was no problem and asked her where she lived and it turned out it was a nearby neighborhood only 5 minutes away nothing nothing complicated so I agreed to give her a ride we got into my car and she gave me her address it was a slightly old apartment complex and on the
way there she told me she lived with her guy I dropped her off right in front of her apartment block and she thanked me then she got out and that was it so I didn't think too much of what happened that night the next day I worked an earlier shift it was summer so I was available all day I remember it was around noon and the store was quieter than usual so I was organizing some shelves near the baseball area taking advantage of the low activity when all of a sudden I saw a strange guy
walking into the aisle the man was walking towards me with a rather aggressive attitude he was wearing dark shorts had some kind of bad haircut and although he wasn't very tall he looked strong this one stared at me and blurted out who do you think you are I stared at him somewhat confused and replied that I had no idea what he was referring to that's when he spat at me that he was Cara's boyfriend and started accusing me of trying to steal his girl at that point I understood that either there was a giant misunderstanding
or this guy was extremely jealous I didn't want to get in trouble but he threw the whole thing in my face at once without Preamble I tried to calm him down by telling him that I really hadn't done anything with Cara that I only took her home because she asked me to after work and that I had no interest in her I made it clear that I didn't even know she had a boyfriend until the night before when she told me when she heard me she seemed to calm down a bit I tried to make
him see that it wasn't my intention to steal his girl and that I hadn't even thought about it as a joke but just when I thought it was all cleared up he went back to the attitude that he didn't want me to treat her and to stay away from her I made it clear again that I had no interest in his girlfriend but he didn't seem to understand Spanish and before he left he made it clear that he didn't want to see me around Cara again then he left I stood there thinking still amazed at
how he had exploded over something so silly truth be told I didn't understand why she got so upset but hey that's just the way some people are they're crazy a few days passed since Cara and I started to think that maybe she was in a toxic relationship or something the next time I was at work I saw her and decided to approach her I said hello and told her what had happened with her boyfriend she looked at me and said I'm sorry but he gets like that sometimes I nodded a little worried for her and
asked her if she was okay that's when she told me that she had broken up with him the day before right after that confrontation she had with me she told me that she had moved back in with her parents and I told her that I was sorry and hoped that she would find someone better in the future she replied that she was fine and that she was happy she had made that decision after that I went on with my shift and didn't see her again that night Cara left at 7:00 p.m. and I finished at
9:00 after clocking out I walked to the parking lot and when I got into my car and started I noticed something strange Cara's ex's car was parked not far from me it was an almost empty parking lot so his presence seemed suspicious to me and as I got out I saw that he also got out right behind me as if he was stalking me as I was driving along every turn I made I looked in the rearview mirror and there he was following me it was night time so I didn't get a good look at
his face but something about the way he drove reminded me a little of carara when I got to my street I felt a little lost so I circled the block a couple of times with him glued to my butt but finally I decided it was best to pull into my driveway I couldn't keep circling the neighborhood trying to lose him when I arrived I jumped out of the car in a hurry and ran to the back of the house without looking back I didn't want to look back to see what the guy was doing so
I just ran I knew my parents always left the glass door to the backyard open so I rushed in through there and as I looked I realized the guy wasn't actually chasing me but I still quickly closed the door and latched it making sure no noise would give me away then I ran to the front window and peaked out from there I saw the guy walk back to his car and to my relief he was gone although my heart was still beating fast I felt a great weight lift as I realized I was safe after
the confrontation with Cara's ex-boyfriend it was clear to me that the guy wasn't going to stay quiet I thought about calling the police but decided that wasn't necessary yet as I hoped that at some point he would understand that there was no reason for him to stalk me however I took a few days off from work trying to throw him off the scent a bit and enjoy a breather in the process I needed it a few days later a group of friends and I decided to go to the mall there was a huge Mall not
too far from where I lived and we were having a great time shopping and laughing and everything was going great until suddenly I saw him Cara's X sitting alone at a table in the food court right in front of us I couldn't believe it I told my friends about my strange encounter and they suggested we confront him but I wasn't about to pick a fight over this so I decided it was best to ignore him and we stayed in the food court for a while longer however about 30 minutes later I saw him walking behind
us in the mall truth be told I thought it was a little scary did he really think it had something to do with his breakup but when we finally left the mall I didn't see him again on my next shift at work Carol was there too so I walked up to her and said hello then I asked her how everything was going and she said it was great as she was planning to move to Seattle in about 2 weeks that was a good distance from California then I told her about the harassment I had been
getting from her ex she looked at me in shock and asked why I told her I probably thought I was responsible for the breakup that statement made her laugh that's crazy you had nothing to do with it she said but I suggested she please let him know however her response was that she had him blocked on everything and had no plans to contact him again this made it clear to me what was going on clearly this guy had decided to turn his anger on me that night very determined not to let the situation go on
like this I even thought about getting the police involved when Cara left before me I stayed behind for a while longer about 20 minutes later I came out of the store walked to my car and to my horror saw that the same guy was parked next to me again at that point my blood boiled but just as I was about 10 steps away from my car he got out of his car and started approaching me with a very aggressive attitude I tried to ask him why he couldn't leave me alone but he didn't even answer
he just walked up to me and punched me in the face I tried to dodge it but he still punched me in the side of the head seeing that he wouldn't stop I hit him back but missed most of the time truth be told I was embarrassed this guy clearly knew how to fight well I hadn't fought since third grade and honestly I had no idea what I was doing so I was a little scared the guy hit me several more times but I barely did any damage finally I fell to the ground and curled
into myself trying to dodge the blows but then he started kicking me and when he realized he had already won he just walked away and went back to his car I was thankful he didn't kick me more than three times while I was on the ground once he left I tried to regain my composure and called the police explaining what happened they arrived quickly and checked me over I had some scratches and bruises but thank God it was nothing serious after that I learned that he had been arrested it turns out that he already had
a criminal record and a warrant for his arrest for failing to appear in court on another charge something to do with robbery I also filed assault charges and it was a relief to know that he would no longer be out there stalking me looking back I was Furious that I had gone through all this drama needlessly but in the end the most important thing was that I was okay [Music] my name is Riley Carter and I reside in a quiet neighborhood in Los Angeles whenever we could my girlfriend jeem and I would escape to a
hidden Beach about 70 Mi away which we discovered by chance it was our perfect gway a wooden bench overlooking stunning rock formations and a vast white sand beach that stretched for Miles talking with Gemma away from the noise of the city was the best thing that could happen to me amidst the hustling and bustle of the dayto day on the afternoon of June 2nd 2015 at about 1:00 Gemma decided to go for a walk looking to enjoy some alone time she usually returned in about an hour but that day she did not return anxiety slowly
crept over me unable to understand what was taking her so long I then called the authorities and an officer named Maya informed me that she had seen a woman fitting gemma's description walking in the opposite direction about a mile away at about 1:30 p.m. according to Maya the two smiled at each other as they passed each other from that point on the police searched the beach and surrounding area for 2 weeks but Gemma was still missing during that time I stayed at home in anguish unable to accept what had happened the truth was even though
I had no proof there was a part of me that knew she was gone two months passed and the pain was still intact until one warm Friday I decided to return to our special place maybe I'll get lucky and see her I thought as I approached our wooden bench as I got there I felt something strange in the air like I was being watched so I turned around and saw Maya the officer about 10 yards away leaning against a rock hi Maya I said a little surprised how have you been she replied with a look
full of understanding sorry it's been so long since our last conversation was about gemma's case she said I just nodded I've been fine I guess I don't know if that's true though I replied Maya came over and in a warm tone asked me would you mind if I sat here with you I don't mean to be intrusive but I thought maybe you might need some company actually in a way that sounded good she had been in the apartment for 10 years and although she was young she had a quiet Beauty her dark hair fell in
soft waves over her shoulders and her gaze was warm sure sit down I said making room for her we shared the silence for 10 minutes until I felt her hand gently rest on mine looking up at me she said I just wanted to offer you some comfort Maya I don't know if this is okay I replied a little confused by the situation she apologized visibly embarrassed I'm sorry I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable I just thought you might need some warmth at this difficult time I felt a little guilty about my reaction as I
looked at her dull face don't worry worry I really appreciate the gesture it's just that I'm still dealing with all this I told her she smiled kind of relieved and after a while I decided it was time to go when I got to my car I noticed that her small car was parked near me what a coincidence I thought as I made my way to the exit however on my way home I saw his car three cars behind mine maybe he lives in my neighborhood I thought to myself and thought nothing more of it over
the next few weeks I returned to our beach and on two occasions Maya arrived shortly after me on the first visit she brought a picnic basket and after sitting down next to me offered me a sandwich it was my favorite shredded beef with onions and a touch of mustard how did you know I asked in surprise I just had a good feeling he replied smiling at me I felt strange but I ended up eating not just one but three sandwiches at that moment she took my hand and rested her head on my shoulder older I
felt something in the air become both comfortable and uncomfortable if that makes any sense but I chose not to mention anything a week later I returned to the beach and this time I didn't see his car however as I approached the bench I saw her lying on it as if resting as she stretched her white dress lifted a little revealing more than I was willing to see I called out to her softly and she awoke in Surprise oh Riley I didn't realize you were here she said her eyes twinkling curiously hi Maya I replied noticing
how her gaze was hard to interpret she fell silent drawing me into a conversation I didn't know how to direct do you sometimes Miss what you lost she asked in a tone that seemed soft almost seductive her gaze made me hesitate and in those moments the tension in the air felt strangely palpable Maya I asked trying to sound calm though inside I was a mess the truth was I was feeling a mixture of excitement and fear and I could tell this was getting out of control O'Reilly come here do this to me do it now
she whispered breathing heavily his closeness made me feel vulnerable like he was pulling me into a dangerous Abyss however against my own desires at the time I knew I had to put a stop to it I couldn't let this go on Maya this is going too far I told her as I slowly backed away trying not to look back I need you to get away from me I repeated to her as I continued on my way to my car I'm so sorry Riley I thought I could help you feel better please excuse me his voice
echoed behind me he was following me that for some reason bothered me more it was like I was stepping on boundaries I knew I shouldn't be stepping on and yet I kept doing it with my heart racing I reached my car feeling anxious about what had happened I had left her behind on the way to the parking lot and didn't respond to her attempts to take me back I really thought that would be the last I would see of Maya but I was very wrong the next day as I arrived home from a long day
at work I saw her little Toyota yarus parked in front of my house what the hell is she doing here I wondered feeling anxiety wash over me I looked for some trace of her but there was no one in sight then the porch light came on and the front door opened and there she was Maya smiling like it was nothing I surprised you huh she said with a nervous laugh her attitude really irritated me how did you get into my house Maya I demanded Ed feeling anger growing inside me don't be angry please I wanted
to see you she said trying to sound sweet where did you get the keys I yelled feeling more and more overwhelmed but at that moment his tone changed drastically you know Riley I've always thought you didn't value me he told me turning away but as I turned again I saw a bright flash in his hand a pistol sit down she ordered me firmly pushing me down onto the couch as she kept it pointed at me you don't remember me do you she whispered I stood stunned bewildered and not knowing what to say of course I
don't but I'm going to remind you I'm Maya Richardson yes the school librarian I watched you every day and I really thought we were meant to be together but you chose Gemma it was in that instant that I remembered her face and it all made sense but horror took hold of me as well what happened to Gemma I asked feeling my stomach clench promise me you'll love me forever Riley and I'll put the gun away he said with a smile that seemed out of this world while his eyes were full of madness don't worry about
her I buried her next to a palm tree in a forest near the beach I did it quickly so you won't worry about her anymore it's our time now Riley no I could barely scream before I was overwhelmed with pain as she lowered the gun without thinking I saw my chance at that moment and tried to run away but a shot rang out in the silence and I froze I stopped immediately and began to feel my chest my abdomen and every part of my body to check if I was wounded but I was fine at
that instant I turned to her but then my eyes were filled with horror she was lying on the ground shot in the temple in a pool of blood rapidly forming around her I don't remember calling the police but they arrived as did the reality of what had happened the next few days were complete chaos gemma's body was found 2 days later in a horrible State and with each passing day my mind deteriorated more and more guilt and horror took hold of me and I was silent for 3 months since then I have been attending therapy
and facing my demons I don't know if I will ever regain normaly in my life but I keep trying I still don't know what drove Maya to take her own life at that time clearly I couldn't ask her but I guess she was really messed up in the head the thing is that this incident marked me deeply and I'm still trying to get back the sense of my life but without success so far and I don't know until [Music] when I'm going to tell you a terrifying story about my life with my husband Matt we
lived in a quiet neighborhood right next to a national park we had an incredible view of the forest and were surrounded by fairly well-to-do neighbors and the truth is although we didn't make a lot of money at our jobs Matt inherited quite a bit after his first wife passed away away that left us with a healthy balance in the bank but aside from all that we were facing a strange problem lately someone was stealing our packages off the porch Matt used to buy a lot of things online but when we weren't home those packages seemed
to disappear we asked our neighbors but none of them had had the same problem it got even more suspicious when a very expensive video game console we had ordered from Amazon went missing so Matt decided it was time to do something about it he installed a security camera on the porch which was connected to his laptop it had a motion detector so we could see live what was happening on our porch to catch the thief we left a fake package on the porch and just waited the whole day went by and no one came near
but when night fell Matt got a motion alert but when he looked at the screen his face turned pale I peaked over his shoulder but he blocked my view it's just an animal he muttered but I could sense there was more to it he jumped off the bed determined to chase whatever was there away stay here he said and I nodded I stood waiting for several minutes but Matt didn't return worry began to creep over me and as I approached the door I noticed that I had left it open I immediately went outside but there
was no sign of Matt or anyone else only the package was still there Matt I shouted but got no response after a few minutes with no sign of him I began to panic what if something had happened to him what if he had tried to confront the thief and had been kidnapped with that in mind I ran back into the house slamming the door hard behind me I grabbed my phone ready to call the police but stopped myself first I needed to see the camera footage to get more complete information so I went back to
the room and opened Matt's laptop I knew his password so I quickly logged in and went into the camera app as I looked at the recording I took a few steps back because what I saw chilled me the recording showed a woman in a thread be white dress with matted hair covering her face she was thin and dirty looking like a homeless person the woman approached our porch looking around before bending down and grabbing the package then I saw Matt run up to her and overheard a bit of their conversation apparently it sounded like they
knew each other and Matt was asking her what she was doing there the woman mumbled something but I couldn't hear well then Matt asked her to return the package the recording showed her slowly returning the package to the porch but she stared at it for quite a while until she suddenly ran up to Matt and grabbed him by the shoulders I couldn't see exactly what she was doing but it looked like she was biting him in the face he screamed and fell to the ground as the woman grabbed a stick and hit him over the
head then with all her strength she dragged him down the porch steps out of view of the camera horrified I dialed 911 to report my husband's abduction I should have waited for the officers to arrive but I couldn't just sit idly by the woman on the phone told me they would send help in less than 5 minutes but I couldn't stand still I had to find Matt so I ran out of the house looking around like crazy but the street was deserted and I saw marks on the ground that looked like drag marks I realized
that the person had taken Matt in that direction and adrenaline coursed through my body a thousandfold as I ran deeper into the darkness with every step anxiety gripped my being as I wondered if I would make it to him in time all I could think about was how to find him and confront that woman I had to do something so I picked up a branch from the ground and started to follow the path that led into the forest but the darkness was overwhelming and I couldn't see anything clearly I walked a few steps and tried
to listen for any sound but everything was terrifyingly silent my heart was pounding I was too scared to go any deeper I knew the police were on their way and even though I knew Matt could be in danger it was smarter to get back to the street just as I turned around however I heard her voice I waited for you why didn't you come for me she wasn't talking directly to me at sounded like she was addressing Matt then I heard her groan in response it sounded like the blow he'd taken had left him quite
confused because he was slurring his speech I wasn't going to leave him there so I kept moving forward Guided by that woman's voice until I came to a clearing in the woods when I got there some light was filtering through the trees and suddenly I saw a small camp there was a tent a pile of supplies and a bunch of empty Amazon boxes that woman had been living here feeding on all the packages she had stolen I saw her Crouch there and across from from her was Matt lying on the ground none of them had
noticed me so I tried to approach quietly I stood behind the woman lifting the branch ready to knock her out and carry Matt to safety I saw that Matt was barely conscious but one of his eyes was completely swollen shut and I could see blood dripping from his nose ah you said you'd come back to me I heard the woman say at that instant my world stopped as Matt mumbled I'm so sorry I'm sorry Helen I couldn't believe it Helen was Matt's first wife the one who had supposedly died and whose inheritance had funded our
life was it possible she was alive and camping out right behind our house all this time my mind was a jumbled mess did Matt know about all this confused and terrified I raised the stick and hit Helen in the back of the head and she fell to the ground unconscious Matt I yelled as I reached out for him trying to help him up but he wouldn't move at that moment I heard noises behind me and when I turned around two police officers came running up one checked Matt while the other asked me what had happened
I tried to explain but it all sounded so strange so surreal that I didn't know where to start when the ambulance arrived it was as if time Stood Still The Paramedics did their best to help him but it was too late for Matt he had died from his injuries but worse the woman Helen had disappeared running off deeper into the woods I had no idea why she had faked her own death and gone into hiding anything Matt might have told me was gone forever and I had a bad feeling that no one would ever find
her again Matt's death broke my heart and left me with my head a mess of questions I couldn't stay in that place so I decided to move out of the house and try to rebuild my life without him but every night the nightmares came back to haunt me and I couldn't shake the image of that woman haunting my dreams seeking revenge on me somehow I never heard from her again but even today I am intrigued to know what really happened between her and Matt my ex Dexter was a real mess we were together for 3
years before I finally decided I'd had enough and kicked him out of my life about 3 months ago since then I've seen Dexter hanging around my work and watching me from a distance he had become a stalker although at first I thought it was just my imagination but over time he became more insistent and less subtle in his Pursuit I never said anything but I began to worry that would ever try to approach and I was becoming very fearful for my safety I was considering filing a restraining order but I knew that would only make
him angrier so I thought it would be best to install security cameras around my house and a doorbell camera on the door even if he never showed up at my home at least I would have some peace of mind knowing the cameras were there after installing them I didn't see Dexter for over a week I started to hope that this was finally over but then came Friday which was a terrible day at work I am an insurance agent and had to break the bad news to a couple that their apartment had been consumed by fire
and their policy did not cover the damage they didn't take it well at all and I actually felt terrible about it I was in a very bad mood when I left the office that afternoon normally I enjoy my job but it's always hard to deliver bad news like that but it was about to get worse as I was walking through the parking lot I suddenly saw him Dexter was hiding in the corner of my building watching me but as soon as I looked at him he disappeared behind the wall my heart raced and I ran
to my car and immediately got the hell out of there when I got home I made sure to lock all the cars and windows I was still nervous the Dexter might be lurking but I tried to calm down a bit knowing that I was safe at home I spent the next few hours watching television but I could barely concentrate it was frustrating to let his presence affect my mood so much when I was in the kitchen heating up some leftovers for dinner my phone vibrated it was an alert from the doorbell camera app someone was
outside my door I opened the app and Bam there was Dexter standing just outside the door with a ski mask on I was shocked what the hell was he trying to do I didn't know but I knew I was up to no good so I ran into my room and called the police the operator told me they couldn't send anyone for at least half an hour and asked me if I was in immediate danger and even though I was scared I said no I was afraid that was a big mistake I opened the app again
and noticed that Dexter was gone but had left a package on on my welcome mat I was left wondering whether to wait for the police to check the package or whether I should inspect it myself I was frightened at the thought that it might be a bomb or something so with my heart in my throat I walked to the door the house was eerily silent and I felt completely alone I peered through the peephole to make sure Dexter wasn't hiding somewhere and then very slowly opened the door the box was small cardboard and showed No
Label or markings I had no idea what to expect from that box but to be honest I wondered if it really could be a bomb did I really think it could be that the truth is that I realized that going near it was a bad idea so I decided to go back inside the house but it was too late with one quick move Dexter jumped out of the bushes and before I knew it he had me pinned down grabbing me around the waist I started screaming for help but I knew there was no one around
who could hear me he dragged me through the bushes until we reached the side of my house there he threw me to the ground and stood over me please stop I begged him I told him I wanted nothing more to do with him and to leave before the police arrived but he let out a derisive laugh and at that moment I noticed something strange in his voice as I looked up I realized it wasn't Dexter I couldn't believe it this guy was taller and stockier it wasn't him and the ski mask didn't help reassure me
you ruined my life he suddenly said and then I understood who it was it was the client in my office whose insurance claim I had turned down he must have followed me and taken advantage of the situation to trap me but while I was trying to come to terms with this new reality he reached into his pocket and pulled out a gun was he going to shoot me my God I had been so naive believing he was my ex at that moment I looked around desperately searching for someone who could help me but the police
had not arrived and the yard was deserted I had a fence isolating me from the street so no neighbor could see me even if they wanted to the guy then cocked his gun and I saw him smile through the mask no one's going to help you he said just before I could fire it was at that moment that I saw a shadow in the back of the yard at first I thought it was the man's wife but as I got a better look I realized it was Dexter he was there lurking and clearly wasn't expecting
an even more dangerous guy to show up being my only hope for salvation I turned to him begging him with my eyes to come help me I saw that he hesitated for a second but then decided to just turn around and run you [ __ ] coward I said in a low voice the man with the mask noticed this who are you talking to he asked I was going to tell him the truth but then it occurred to me that this might be my chance to escape that's my boss I shouted back he's the reason
your life is ruined he's the one who denied your claim at that instant I could notice a change in the guy's gaze immediately the masked man dropped his focus on me and seeing him running away he lunged towards Dexter as he was trying to climb the fence and suddenly everything went into chaos I couldn't see exactly what happened but I heard scuffling shouting from Dexter trying to explain to the man that I had lied but it didn't seem to have any effect the bushes blocked my view but then I heard a gunshot and then everything
went eerily silent less than a minute later the police arrived an officer ran up to me and asked if I was okay trembling I nodded and pointed toward the back of my yard the policeman ducked into the bushes and although I thought about following him fear stopped me that was the right decision when he returned his face showed seriousness we found your ex dead on the ground he said there was no one else there a few weeks later the masked man was arrested and confessed everything now he's in jail and I finally feel safe but
just in case I still have my ring camera and if anyone leaves any of those boxes on my porch I'll just leave them there I'll never risk being caught again this true story happened a few years ago when I was about 12 years old at the time I was living in New York but we also had a summer home on Cape Cod where we spent weekends whenever we could Cape cot is a peninsula on the east coast of Massachusetts and in the summer it gets crowded with tourists but in the winter it becomes almost deserted
most of the houses are summer homes so in the winter the area feels empty very different from New York where at least there are street lights the only Main Road in Cape Cod goes from downtown to the beach outside of that route everything is pitch black at night that said as Cape Cod extends out into the Atlantic the bay offers incredible views with sunrises over the ocean and sunsets over the bay on clear days it's truly beautiful however that also means that there is little artificial light which makes the stars shine brightly and the Milky
Way is easily visible on clear nights the story I tell happened between Christmas and New Year's Day after the celebrations there was a mountain of leftover turkey and pumpkin pie on the table the combination of the festivities and the food was driving us all crazy and one night my older sister who is 6 years my senior had the idea to take a walk down to the harbor it was about a 20-minute drive from the house and while I felt a little unsafe walking through a deserted Seaside town on a cold winter night I also thought
it might be fun and even a little exciting we left our class classic Cape Cod cabin which was right across the street from a field that overlooked a forest I was a little afraid that a psycho was watching us from the bushes maybe crouched down with an axe or something I knew that was Just My Imagination Running Wild from years of being a horror movie buff but still the wind was moving the tall grass in a way that didn't help to relax the sky was moonless and full of bright stars creating a perfect setting for
a horror story like something out of a Stephen King book on the way to the main road we drove on for a bit bit and then turned onto a side street that ran down towards the harbor that street ran alongside a two-story Hotel painted a light yellow which in summer is full of life but on that cold December night the hotel was closed and there was nothing but Darkness with Windows covered with wooden planks my sister commented that the sight of the hotel with its desolate appearance reminded her of a horror movie where the characters
always make the wrong choices and end up in the worst places imaginable and I couldn't agree with her more at the end of the street we decided to continue to the left the road went down through the forest to the harbor it was not a dense forest as we passed a few houses set back from the road in the occasional driveway most of those roads had reflectors on the rocks or fences reflecting the lights of cars as they passed I mentioned this because we weren't going to see anything that night the whole place was Pitch
Black and the road seemed to Fade Into Darkness as we continued on the silence was almost overwhelming and I began to feel uneasy every rustle of branches or Whisper Of Wind made my skin crawl there was something in the atmosphere as if the forest was living its own horror story but in spite of everything we kept going and although I was afraid of what might be in the dark The Thrill of the adventure pushed me to continue I never imagined what we would actually find on that walk it was something that would change the way
I saw the world forever come to think of it it was was strange that we didn't see a single car or anyone on the road since we left home my nerves were on edge and at only 12 years old I tried to Stand My Ground so as not to look scared in front of my sister the woods along the road were Eerie with trees almost touching the asphalt on both sides that seemed like a perfect place to hide someone or even something the houses beyond the woods were in complete darkness as vacationers hardly ever come
in the winter I noticed that my sister was uncomfortable too and that was just when I felt it A Rush of energy ran down my back that uncomfortable feeling when you feel like someone is watching you it's complicated to explain but I still feel it sometimes like a sixth sense that kicks in when someone is watching me from behind by now we were in the middle of the forest heading down towards the harbor and my thoughts were going a little crazy I wanted to stop pretending to be calm and propose to my sister that we
go back but before I could say anything she suggested it's late maybe we shouldn't go on to the harbor I said yes and also that the darkness made me feel sick the back of my neck was shaking and I struggled to stay relaxed as my instincts screamed at me to go into survival mode yeah it's got a creepy feel to it we'd better go back to the house and visit the Harbor tomorrow my sister said and we turned around she held my hand so tightly it hurt it was rare for her to do that I
don't remember the last time she held my hand like that but just when I thought everything was going to get better the story got even crazier as we walked out of the woods my sister yelled I have a knife and I'm not afraid to use it and she didn't stop walking fast as she said it we crossed the street and headed around the back of the closed motel and she kept squeezing my hand glancing back nervously from time to time my heart was pounding I was terrified but there was nothing strange in sight just her
increasingly odd behavior then suddenly she said when I tell you to run you run okay I didn't have time to nod when she yelled at me run it was as if an alarm had gone off in my head run he yelled again and let go of my hand and we started running as fast as we could back my heart skipped a beat and I could hear our footsteps echoing against the asphalt but I could also hear other footsteps behind us we cut across the lawn to a shortcut that led to our street running between our
neighbors Gardens as if in a race against the clock finally we reached the front door and with a big bang we slammed the storm door shut which had a bunch of glass panels in it I was scared and in a state of panic not really knowing if there was a reason to feel this way or if I was just going crazy the transition from the terrifying Darkness outside to the warm light of our house was strange and once we were there we looked at each other wondering if there was really a threat or if we
were just letting our imaginations run wild out there I asked my sister what she had really seen and she replied that there was a guy standing at at one of the entrances one that we had passed on our way back she said that when we were behind the motel he crossed the street and followed us for a while watching us even though we were doing our best to get out of there she said the guy was having a hard time following us but still she felt he was too close it didn't make sense for someone
to be there in that dark and lonely area honestly I don't know what happened that night and I have my doubts about how much of what my sister said was true maybe she was confused used or nervous in the end it doesn't matter because something in me was triggered a kind of certainty that I would never try that night walk again from now on I prefer to walk to the harbor alone in the daytime with sunlight and the possibility of other people around that definitely makes me feel [Music] safer my name is Arnold Diaz and
I live on the second floor of an old apartment building on Green Street Soho in the heart of New York I retired a couple of years ago and I'm now 63 I was a paratrooper in the Army and keep my body in good shape by exercising daily I sometimes consider myself a watcher of the neighborhood since instead of having a TV I spend my time sitting on my balcony enjoying the hustle and bustle of life on the street the other day I went to buy some fresh rolls at the bakery a block away from my
apartment it was chilly and the aroma of their freshly baked goods made me realize that I had never entered the shop before when I arrived I met Allison the owner the bakery was filled with delicious smells coming out of the oven and suddenly I saw a guy in his 30s standing guard by the window the man had dark hair an old pair of jeans and a black leather jacket but he looked out of place like he was on the prowl nice place you have here I said to Allison as I glanced at the guy she
smiled thanks are you from around here yeah I'm Arnold nice to meet you I live just block from here I replied as the guy outside shifted his gaze from Allison to elsewhere she with a warm smile offered me some free muffins as a welcome since you're a new customer take these muffins on the house Mr Diaz that's very kind of you Allison I promise I'll come here every time to buy my sweet things I said cheerfully but as I left I noticed that the guy had crossed to my side of the street I felt instantly
uncomfortable so I started walking back home keeping an eye on him as I reached my building I saw him approaching the bakery again I didn't like something about that guy so I decided to follow him but when he saw me he quickly turned around adjusted the hood of his jacket and ran away I stood there waiting for about 10 minutes to make sure he didn't come back Allison was a kind person and I was concerned for her safety the next morning I got up at 4:30 a.m. as usual I made my coffee and lit a
cigarette while sitting on the balcony at 5:30 a.m. I saw the same guy just as suspicious leaning against a wall about two blocks from the bakery he was lighting cigarette after cigarette surveying his surroundings nervously and somehow I knew he was there waiting for Allison by about 6:30 a.m. I saw Allison in the distance getting off a bus and heading to her store as she approached the guy straightened up and pulled out a dollar looking at his phone like it was busy hello beautiful morning for a beautiful lady he said with a smile trying to
sound friendly thank you what a compliment what's your name Allison replied with a bit of dignity my name is Fred he said as they walked together I noticed that Allison was uncomfortable because after all he was a stranger you have to be careful there are some truly crazy guys around here I thought to myself well okay she replied while just wanting to be polite but sniffing the tension in the air I could tell Fred was watching around her constantly which made her more uncomfortable I didn't like the situation at all and I knew I had
to do something when they got to the bakery Fred said to Allison thanks have a nice day oh sure Fred she replied a little awkwardly though she was trying to be polite he stood there smiling as she walked away and seeing this I decided to put on more decent clothes and head to the bakery to check on Allison but as I walked I noticed the guy slinking off into a nearby alley that guy is stalking you Allison I said as I entered the store I think he just wanted to come with me she said making
me feel a little more relieved yeah sure but there seems to be something off about him I don't trust that guy I replied relax I'll pay attention to him his name is Fred Allison said as the friendly gesture faded a bit don't worry I'll take care of you I promised as I said goodbye take care Allison later at 5 p.m. as I stood on my balcony I saw Fred cross the street again he had his hood up again and suddenly I saw him enter the same alley as before as he crossed I got a little
nervous before long I saw Allison come out of the bakery and move toward the bus but just then Fred came out of the alley startling Allison with his sudden appearance you gave me a scare Fred she said noticing that her Palms were damp with nerves he replied I'm sorry but remember I'm none of those crazy people as he laughed in a strange way he then told her that he would walk her to the bus something that clearly did not please her no thank you Fred I don't need company I'd appreciate it if you'd leave me
alone she told him visibly annoyed I watched her walk away thinking he would leave her alone as soon as Allison walked a few blocks I decided I had to follow her so I hurried down the stairs and kept some distance as I followed her as the bus pulled away I saw Fred standing with his arms crossed pointing toward her with an unsettling smile I tried to approach him but as soon as he realized I was there he was lost in traffic and I lost sight of him but at least I knew Allison was safe for
the time being for the next 4 days Fred kept stalking Allison and she was getting more and more frightened the whole thing was disturbing and we decided to go to the police to report what was going on the next morning I jumped awake it was 7:30 a.m. so I peaked out on the balcony but Allison's Bakery was closed and neither She nor Fred were around something wasn't right I knew wasting no time I quickly got dressed skipping coffee altogether and went straight to the bakery I tried the door and to my surprise it wasn't locked
that was an alarming sign I walked in slowly looking around there was no sign of anyone Allison had a small kitchen in the back where she seemed to make her tea and take lunch breaks I opened that door slowly and what I saw rung my heart Allison was bound and gagged unable to scream adrenaline took control of me at that moment I knew I had to act fast Allison's hands and feet were bound and her expression showed absolute Terror she didn't say a single word but her eyes were moving frantically as if she was trying
to warn me of something suddenly I felt Fred's presence and as I closed the door behind me I saw this guy standing there with a butcher knife glinting in his right hand hey old man he said in a menacing tone didn't your mother ever teach you to keep your nose out of other people's business he began waving the knife defiantly clearly intending to intimidate me without losing my cool I assumed a defensive posture as if ready for a Tai Chi fight you're a pathetic old man he sneered making me want to teach him a good
lesson and shut that filthy mouth mouth of his as Allison struggled and moaned with the gag still in her mouth Fred moved a little closer but before he realized what was happening I drew strength from where I didn't think I had it and lunged at him in an instant the knife flew from his hand as I broke his arm and I pushed him back in one swift decisive Motion in just 15 seconds I had knocked him out bleeding from the mouth eyes and nose as he screamed in despair that's what you get for messing with
a former paratrooper you miserable brat I told him feeling a mixture of adrenaline and satisfaction then I kicked him in the head to make sure he didn't get up and immediately rushed to free Allison removed her gag and untied her she gasped as she caught her breath thank you Mr Arnold she repeated visibly relieved where did you learn to fight like that she asked me admiringly I just smiled at her age is just a number girlfriend after releasing her I used those same ropes to tie the guy up and we took a moment to regain
our composure before calling the police they arrived in a hurry and after asking a few questions carried Fred still unconscious to their van the two officers couldn't believe that I had knocked out a guy much younger than me in the blink of an eye after that Allison and I began to bond more as friends at least we knew I would never have to deal with Fred again as he was charged with harassment kidnapping trespassing and attempted murder which will keep him in prison for quite some time although it was a traumatic experience for her this
news generated a surge of new customers at the bakery people people were drawn to the heroic story of Allison and the paratrooper who had rescued her when questioning Fred the police discovered that he and Allison had gone to the same school he confessed that he had been an overweight boy and had always held a grudge against her because despite his attempts she never reciprocated he had spent a decade waiting for the moment when she would finally notice him and when he realized that she had forgotten him he became obsessed with her and wanted Revenge but
his plan to assault Allison was foiled by a 60 three-year-old who proved to him that bravery knows no age
