[Music] hello everyone this is kelly mara here and no it's not calamari i'm back with another video i know i don't usually post this frequently but i decided to do something a bit different today in that this video is actually gonna be unscripted normally i script all my videos because i find that i just organize my thoughts a lot better that way i can look back and move things around if i have to but i find that most of my video making time is spent on the script so i just wanted to do something a
bit more spontaneous and see how that goes and because it's my channel and i can do whatever i want so today we are gonna be doing some civilian designs for marinette from miraculous ladybug because i did her ladybug form which is the first video in my ladybug redesign series and people kept asking me if i was going to do her civilian form even though i've said in the video that oh i think her current outfit suits her weird bland vague personality pretty well because it's also weird vague and bland but you know i also am
a people pleaser so i'm not just doing one design you guys i'm gonna be doing three and then you guys can decide in the comments which one you think is the best design for marinette admittedly this video is going to be more of a redesign and less of a rewrite because i feel like i've pretty much covered everything i wanted to talk about in my first video so this video is really just an excuse for me to play around with my art style so i hope you guys still enjoy it and before we get into
the video i would also like to remind you guys that i have merch out at the moment it's really awesome and i hope you guys will enjoy it too orders close on the 30th of april and then it's gone forever so if you guys want to support me definitely consider getting one but aside from that let's dive right into the video [Music] so for this first outfit i made sure to pick out a reference photo first i just looked up really cute outfits i thought would fit marinette off of pinterest and for the most part
i tried to pull from different aesthetics but for this particular outfit i was especially drawn to this dark academia ensemble something about it just screamed marinette to me i think it's the comfy sort of casual cute vibes that i think would match her really well because it's a flowy skirt i wanted to give marinette a more dynamic pose so that we can actually see the skirt in motion so i kind of decided on this half stride type beat where she also has her leg up so you can see the kind of shoes she was wearing
i normally really struggle with shoes but somehow i lucked out on this particular one and after drawing in the face the hat and the hair this marinette just gave me really strong classical magical girl vibes like card captor sakura and sailor moon and i was really really into that i thought this was so adorable even if the face didn't quite line up with what marinette's model really looked like i loved the loose waves that the model had so i decided to include them in this design as well and for this particular drawing i wanted to
experiment with softer lines i've been trying to make my art look soft for a while now i've just never been able to figure out how i like doing line art i'm not particularly a big fan of coloring straight on from my sketch so i tried to work with this sort of soft pen instead of my usual hard pens and i used thinner lines with less pressure sensitivity and i thought it turned out all right i wasn't a big fan because the lines ended up looking pretty flat but i thought maybe the colors would help mitigate
that so i just started coloring in her skin and hair but when i got to her clothes i realized that this dark academia color palette didn't really suit marinette and who she is as a character so i tried playing around with the colors a bit i tried pink and white which straight too far from the academia kind of aesthetic so i settled on a light beige tone and white instead and flipped the dark academia look to more of a light academia and that ended up suiting marinette really well after that i just colored in her
eyes and shaded it up gave some color to her skin and shine to her hair and that was pretty much it i wanted to keep the drawing relatively simple i used to love adding white highlights because it just makes my drawings pop a lot more so i decided to do that here but regarding the softness of the drawing i don't think i managed to achieve it honestly it still looks pretty harsh i'm i don't think i'm gonna be doing line art like this moving forward [Music] marinette has always struck me as a soft girl kind
of girl so it was only natural that i also pulled from the soft girl aesthetic i wanted to avoid putting her in another skirt but i stumbled across this reference photo and i just knew it would be perfect for the shy reserved unconfident character that is marinette naturally her pose had to reflect this and so i opted for a more reserved feel [Music] [Music] i debated on what to do for her hair for a while but then i remembered marinette looks particularly good with a hair bun i wanted to do twin buns initially but i'd
already done that design for her ladybug suit so i thought as a contrast it would be nice to put it in a single bun i then went about drawing the oversized sweater which was a bit of a challenge because you need to somehow capture the character's form without forming it too much and it's a delicate balance to try and achieve i'm not classically trained in art so i'm not particularly familiar with how clothes work and the physics of clothes but i think i got there in the end i then went about adding details and in
the end i decided that marinette would have her foot up once again so you could see her shoes i thought it was a nice compromise because i didn't want to do a full body and i added some ribbons in her hair as well i thought that would be a cute little touch for her outfit the next thing to do was her close-up which was pretty straightforward i just had to transfer the design over and illustrate it in more detail i do still stand by my initial statement that i don't think marinette would wear any of
these clothes out in public i think these are just some things that she designed by herself that she wears around the house but probably wouldn't have the confidence to go out to school and meet up with her friends in so she likely still dresses in her usual canon outfit for the line art i decided to go back to my usual brushes and went with a harder outline this is a brush i haven't used in a while actually and i am kind of wondering why i stopped using it because it's so good the pressure changes are
so dynamic and i had so much fun just filling in details with this pen when usually it's a bit of a hassle this pen in case you guys are wondering is called razuro's highlight pen you can get from the clip studio asset store really reawakened my love of sketching in fact i kind of liked the line art better when it was still black and white because you could see all the stroke details much more clearly the particular sweater i was going for has these specific knitting details and i didn't necessarily want to detail them out
by hand so because i'm lazy i downloaded some new brushes from the clip studio asset store that emulates knit cables and it really saved my life honestly i was really having fun with this pen so i ended up adding some more shading details as well because i think it's a nice contrast between hard and soft shading [Music] i just colored everything in i didn't change any of the colors this time because i thought they suited marinette perfectly and honestly i'm a huge fan of this color palette in case you guys haven't been able to tell
i'm a pretty big fan of pink so this is really right up my alley i'm pretty sure i have that exact sweater as well so i'm probably biased all in all i think this is a look that marinette could very easily wear around the house as she's working on some new outfit designs although i'd pretty much given up on trying to make my drawing look soft in this version it actually ended up looking way softer than the first one did and i think it was because i was a lot more comfortable with the line art
and i was catering to my taste as opposed to what i think i should be doing it just goes to show that art is really what makes you happy and not caring what other people think and not comparing yourself to other people [Music] on this third and final outfit i was determined to put marinette in some pants and so i did i gravitated towards this particular picture mostly because of the oversized sweater and because of the lacy tank top which i found was quite prominent in a lot of paris core type outfits i don't know
if paris core is actually accurate to what the fashion is in paris but that was the best i could do off of pinterest as you can probably see i was heavily inspired by that reference picture in my posing as well i thought it would be a nice change from the cutesy reserved poses marinette was doing before i imagined this as her just kind of trying on outfits in the privacy of her room her hair i wasn't quite sure what to do i thought maybe i could do a play on her usual twin tails but i
settled with a tied back look that was partially inspired by link's hair from breath of the wild and the tight back style you can unlock from pokemon legends arceus and once again i had to traverse the oversized clothing dilemma which was actually a lot easier this time around because i had a clear reference picture the form definitely wasn't as tricky as the previous one so i had a bit of fun with that and i also loved the necklace that the model was wearing because it just gave a nice accessory touch to marinette that i felt
she was severely lacking in the show for her close-up i decided with a side view so that you can see what i was trying to do with her hair a bit better and it's essentially just her hair being semi-tied back and then it's on to the line art i decided to use razzaroo's highlight pen once again because i had a lot of fun with it last time and it really made lining a breeze because it just makes the whole illustration really come to life when you have that line language i suppose i don't really know
how to describe it i think i've pretty much typecasted marinette's fashion as cozy chic with oversized sweaters the sweater can function as both a comfort and a way for her to hide herself if she feels self-conscious a small tip from me when doing line art is that i usually like to think about where shadows would usually fall on the illustration and in those areas i tend to make the line art thicker to emulate shadows that way even without coloring or shading your illustration still has a sense of lighting to it arguably the most exhaustive part
of this illustration was the sweater because this time i actually did choose to hand draw all of the patterns that would constitute a knitted sweater and it definitely was a lot but i still had a lot of fun doing it and i think the effort really enhanced the illustration so it was well worth the effort [Music] [Music] once again i added manual shading using the pen to the illustration i learned my lesson this time and made it a bit thicker so that it would show up against marinette's dark hair and just constitute more of a
shadow than it was last time where the lines were a bit too thin so that it didn't really stand out against the colors [Music] [Music] the colors i went with were pretty much identical to the reference photo and i'm honestly a huge fan of how it looks almost monochrome marinette looks really good in black and white [Music] one thing you might notice though is that i completely erased all of the cross hatching i was doing before and i've just replaced it with some block shading and i think it actually looks a lot better i even
left the line art black this time because i wanted it to be more pronounced and show in the illustration and i just think it worked with the color scheme as well and i'm really happy with the how this turned out i think recently i've really been shying from my comfort zone and trying to push myself into more realistic shading 3d art mostly because i feel lazy doing this simple style of shading even though i really enjoy it and i personally think it looks really good i guess i'm constantly telling myself that i should be doing
more i should be making things more detailed more realistic please let me know if you guys have ever felt like this if you're an artist god i'm really sounding like marinette aren't i and here are the final designs let me know in the comments which one you thought was the best one for marinette or which one you just liked personally thank you so much for watching all the way to the end and welcome to all the new subscribers i want to give a big thank you for 60k we're growing really fast and i don't know
