[Music] in 2010 a 40-year-old woman was driving home from work in Colorado City Texas with the two young kids in the backseat of her car it was a normal day just like any other nothing out of the ordinary when she suddenly got a headache it came on Fast and then within seconds her vision blurred like to the point that she couldn't hardly even see the road anymore so she pulled off on the shoulder put the car in park hoping this thing would pass but it didn't she passed out slumped over and died right there on
the front seat her kids who I'm sure were terrified were actually able to call 911 for help but by the time they arrived it was too late they tried to revive her but ultimately she was pronounced dead on the scene the name of the woman in this story was Catherine and she was my first cousin they later found out that she had a brain aneurysm that burst and caused a cerebral hemorrhage a brain aneurysm she probably had her entire life and just didn't know it this was obviously a tragedy in our family and it affected
all of us in different ways if I'm being honest I really wasn't that close with Katherine I hadn't seen her in years at that point um but you know when we were kids we were around each other quite a bit at Family reunions holidays stuff like that but I think it's safe to say that didn't exactly do wonders for my chronic existential dread that in this pervasive feeling I've always had that you never know you Tres you might to eat well and stay healthy take care of yourself you can do all the right things and
there's still just a host of things that can go wrong in the human body some of which you may not even know you have until it's too late so I took it upon myself to look into some of the deadliest conditions that can happen to the human body without you even knowing that it's happening but don't worry we're also going to talk about some of the things you can do to catch these things earlier and look at some of the medical advances that might make some of these issues a thing of the past all right
before we get too far into this I should be clear that there is a whole lot of diseases out there that don't really show symptoms are called asymptomatic diseases or subclinical diseases sometimes and um and not all of them are anything to panic about you probably have one yourself oh good that makes me feel so much better in fact it's kind of hard to pin down exactly what a normal body is supposed to be in the first place uh we're all kind of messed up in our own special ways but there are some that kind
of just sit there under the skin under the surface for years sometimes decades before finally reaching a Tipping Point and when they reach that Tipping Point that's when things start to spiral and things go downhill really fast so in this video I'm going to talk a little bit about both some of these are absolute life Enders some might just do some permanent damage but some like this first one well they sneak up on you and are a lot more troubled than you might think our first disease is high blood pressure yeah high blood pressure now
I know a lot of you out there are probably like high blood pressure come on what like that's you know what are you talking about in fact chances are probably half of you out there watching this have some level of high blood pressure and you probably think it's not that big a deal you have it you deal with it probably somebody else in your family has it I mean it's not even really a disease is it to which I would argue a uh just because it's common doesn't mean it's harmless and B it's fair enough
um it's really more of a condition than a disease but it is a condition that can lead to all kinds of other diseases high blood pressure also goes by the term hypertension uh but is often nicknamed the silent killer for reasons I'm about to explain high blood pressure means that the force of your blood pushing against your artery walls is too high meaning the heart has to work harder to pump the blood this obviously puts extra stress in the heart which according to various medical experts that I've talked to uh you need you need your
heart it basically creates more stress on everything in your body everything has to work a little bit harder to do its job and that just causes it to wear down faster more stress on the walls of the arteries means more chances for burst vessels and anisms like I just talked about and damaged arteries means more likelihood of debris from that damage causing a blockage and now you got a stroke stress vessels in your kidneys can lead to lower kidney function and kidney disease possibly kidney failure if all that is not enough reason to take it
seriously it can also damage blood vessels in your eyeballs meaning you could lose your vision and then you wouldn't be able to see my pretty face on your phone while taking a dump and none of us want that there's really no one cause of high blood pressure uh lifestyle choices and diet are usually talked about but honestly they only get talked about because those are the things that you can actually control uh truth is most of the reasons that you get high blood pressure are actually out of your control things like genetics um age race
stress levels the good news is high blood pressure is very easy to catch you can get your blood pressure tested all over the place anywhere at the gym or whatever and there's a whole host of treatments available so you know as long as you get checked long as you stay on top of it you can prob avoid the worst outcomes but it can definitely be that silent killer thing if you don't do anything about it so you can learn about it the easy way or the hard way I suggest the easy way next let's talk
about gum disease okay so here's the deal if you just let out a sigh when I said gun disease because there's nothing really scary about gum disease um you are wrong like so very very wrong like it's actually terrifying like every last one of you is going to be flossing after you watch this video and you should be flossing your teeth because gun disease is kind of one of those canaries in the coal mine things like like it's not dangerous itself but it can be a precursor to a lot of really bad stuff stuff like
diabetes heart disease cancer and Alzheimer's disease yeah from your gums like researchers found that men with gum disease are 49% more likely to get kidney cancer and 54% more likely to get pancreatic cancer which spoiler alert that will come up again in this video and gum disease has been connected with an increased buildup of beta amid proteins in the brain which leads to Alzheimer's disease in fact there's a type of bacteria called pomonis gingivalis um it's a big part of gum disease you've probably heard of gingivitis from those Listerine commercials that's where that comes from
but anyway um that bacteria has been found in the brains of Alzheimer's patients the exact connection between the two things is still kind of unknown it's still being researched but the mouth that no are like the entry point for the body like everything that enters your body unless something horrible has happened enters your body through your mouth this is like the gate and draw bridge on the castle of your body this is where the outside world meets the inside world if a bacteria is going to get in chances are it'll get in here so if
you have a runaway bacterial infection it doesn't just like erode your teeth and gums and make your breast smell bad it gets pump throughout your whole body every time you swallow you are swallowing that bacteria it can cause all of digestive issues it can create a a chronic immune response in your body that can cause inflammation that leads to other problems like hypertension excess white blood cells in your vessels can coagulate and cause blockages and strokes like I know I know I get tired of the dentist nagging me all the time about flossing too I
used to be terrible about it uh but lately I've just kind of just made it part of like my nightly routine you know I I before I go to bed I floss I rinse and guess what my gums don't bleed anymore but it really isn't about your teeth and about your gums and about the Aesthetics of it it's not a vanity thing this is about the health of your entire body and that really doesn't get communicated very well so seriously just take 30 seconds every day and just Jam some floss between your teeth like that
in wearing sunscreen if you did those two habits alone you could probably extend your lifespan by 5 years is that true I don't know I just made it up whatever just flash your damn teeth now something just for the ladies we've got polycystic ovary syndrome that was probably a better way to introduce that polycystic ovary syndrome as the name implies affects only those people with ovaries and it affects up to 10% of all women of childbearing age but only 50% of those who have it are correctly diagnosed it's a condition where the female's body overproduces
male hormones that then can interfere with ovulation and increase the risk of heart disease type 2 diabetes and endometrial cancer so a lot of women have no idea that they have it until they get diagnosed with something way worse you might be seeing a pattern here by the way it's not that it doesn't give off symptoms it does produce symptoms it's just that the symptoms it produces looks like a lot of other things for example one of the most common symptoms is just irregular periods which a lot of women have irregular periods for all kinds
of reasons other possible signs might be things like adult acne body or facial hair or the hair on their head may start to thin kind of sounds like an adult woman going through male puberty which having been through male puberty I would not wish that on anyone in fact if there's if there's anything in the world that's worse than male puberty it's well female puberty probably now this is something they can check for with physical exams uh blood test sometimes ultrasounds can be done on the ovaries so yeah if any of this is sounding like
it's familiar setting off alarm Bells you might want to give your doctor a call and check it out now you might have notied that all of these so far have been like small things that can lead to worse things if you're not careful now we're going to talk about the worst things the number one thing you can do to survive cancer is to catch it early fortunately you've gotten a lot better about that over the years but there are still frustratingly some cancers that you just it's really hard to know you have it until it's
too far along to do anything about it one of them is ovarian cancer which kills up to 14,000 women yearly in the United States kind of like the polycystic ovary syndrome I just talked about it's its symptoms are fairly mild and they look like a lot of other symptoms so they often go overlooked until the cancer gets a foothold and that's why most of the time when they're finally detected the Cancer's already to stage three or four and the scary part is there's no screening test for it you just kind of have to wait for
the symptoms to show up which is why if you're experiencing things like bloating lot of appetite or pelvic pain please see your doctor your best offense is to take these symptoms seriously by the way I should probably take a second here to remind everybody that I am not a doctor and neither is Google or ask GES or duck Dugo I am merely conveying this information I suggest you take it to a doctor to find out what to do the one that freaks me out the most though by far is uh pancreatic cancer and again this
might be kind of personal to me because I've actually lost people I know to pancreatic cancer my uncle died di 5 years ago from it and it was like I mean 6 weeks after they found it he was gone and I know some of you in the comments are going to say that that's the way you'd prefer to go like quick like that but assuming you want to survive cancer pancreatic is not a good one it's just it's totally asymptomatic until it gets into the later stages at which point it's just too late to really
do anything I want to be clear though it's not like completely hopeless things are getting better treatments are getting better uh if you get diagnosed with pancreatic don't just give up and die there's plenty of things that can be done um but it's it's one of the worst diagnosis to get this is also true of coloral cancer which is why there's been such a big push for colonoscopies in recent years I mean at least with those you can get up there and take a look so you know get up there the one in here that
kind of surprised me is prostate cancer um I didn't realize it was so widespread but apparently 30,000 men die from it every year it's actually the most common cancer among males after skin cancer with more than 270,000 cases diagnosed every year so considering 270,000 cases there's 30,000 deaths you can kind of determine the death rate from that it's not the deadliest thing it might be more of a thing that just men don't go to the doctor as much as women do but this is definitely one things screen for by testing prostate specific antigens so yeah
it's a good idea to do regular blood test and just catch it early moving away from cancer for a minute let's take a look at some neurological diseases that you may not know until it's too late one of the most nightmarish ones uh for me anyway is Huntington's disease which causes nerve cells in your brain to deteriorate you can kind of describe huntingtons as like having Parkinson's and Alzheimer's and Dementia at the same time like it eats way at your memory and your cognitive abilities but it also attacks your motor cortex making you stumble and
drop things and until you get to the point where you can't walk anymore now as is a case with a lot of these neurological conditions the damage happens at a cellular level so you don't notice it for like a really long time but once it does get to where it's done enough damage that you notice it it's already kind of gone exponential and then it just quickly develops from there so you might have Huntington's disease for like literal decades and have no symptoms and no idea that this thing is just slowly eating away at your
brain but there is one really good way to test to see if you have it it's actually really simple test um just look at your parents Huntington is a genetic disease so basically if one of your parents has it there's a 50% chance that you'll have it like only 2% of cases or from somebody whose parents didn't have it their genetic test you can do to see if one of your parents had the gene um their test you can do in utero so you can know before you pass it on to somebody if you get
pregnant so it's definitely less scary if you don't have a family history of it but uh yeah if you do um yeah you might want to get one of those genetic tests done I think there are some treatments they can do to slow down the progress in the early days um but it's something you definitely need to know so I mentioned Alzheimer's a minute ago it's it's kind of the same thing with Alzheimer's that I just said like it it does most of its damage asymptomatically so that by the time you start to see symptoms
there's really only so much you can do Alzheimer's disease of course affects parts of the brain that control language memory and thoughts almost 5.8 million people in the US have Alzheimer's as of 2020 that number is expected to go up to 14 million by 2060 and yet we still don't completely know what causes it um the leading theory is the what I was talking about a minute ago the buildup of amalo plaques in your brain flash your teeth people uh but we still don't really know the best way to prevent that buildup or how to
combat that buildup some of the early symptoms you might see including like memory problems that start to disrupt your daily life things like getting lost in a store um asking the same questions over and over again familiar tasks may become harder um sometimes people's personality can noticeably change and while there have been a flurry of drugs to help kind of slow down or reduce the symptoms there's unfortunately still not a cure for Alzheimer's so you know how I started off this video talking about high blood pressure and how it can lead to all these other
things and some of those other things were some of the stuff that I talked about like the you know the heart problems and whatnot um there's some even worse ones like I know I already covered some of the you know complications of high blood pressure those are those are problems but uh these are the ones that will end your life right now like my cousin at the beginning of this video she died very suddenly very unexpectedly from a brain aneurysm high blood pressure can do that an aneurism is is basically a spot in your blood
vessel where the wall kind of gives way like a balloon and that's not dangerous in and of itself you could live your entire life with an aneurysm and be just fine unless that aneurysm bursts yeah it's not the aneurysm that kills you it's the bursting that kills you um in the same way that it's not the fall that kills you it's the hitting the ground part but just like a balloon you know when that vessel wall gets stretched and bulged it becomes weaker and it becomes more likely to tear and if that happens to a
really important artery that can be a serious problem so you know you got weak spots and vessels and important places in your body how do you think high blood pressure affects that yeah it greatly increases the chance of ruptures and that rupture happens in the brain and causes bleeding you have what they call a hemorrhagic stroke and unfortunately there's no real symptoms to having an aneurysm in your brain in fact I bet many of you watching this have one and don't even know it stop say that they can be found with CAT scans but in
general insurance doesn't really cover it unless there's some reason to look um so yeah most aneurisms are found by accident while looking at something else but that happened to a friend of mine um she was getting a CAT scan for some other reason and they got her head and uh they found an aneurysm in her in her brain like it it could go off at any moment she has to be aware of that usually the biggest symptom of a rupture is a sudden and severe headache usually followed by blurred or double vision nausea or confusion
so yeah if you're suddenly hit with that out of the blue don't be a hero get help immediately in that same vein we're talking about blood vessels ve high blood pressure can also cause DVT or deep vein thrombosis uh if you've ever heard anybody say don't have a thrombo this is what they're talking about well Bessa don't have a thrombo this is when a blood clot breaks off on the inside of a vessel and then travels up to your lungs where it blocks arteries and causes what's called a pulmon embolism basically it it blocks blood
flow to the lungs what does it have to do with high blood pressure well when the arteries are stretched little micro tears can happen and in the process of repairing those tears clots can form those clots can collect and get bigger and cause plaques and if the blood pressure is high enough it increases the likelihood that one of those plaques could break off and then now you're in trouble DVT usually happens in the legs and may not cause any symptoms at first but if you start feeling cramping or soreness in your calf that just won't
go away and especially if it's kind of tender to the touch and warm on the lower leg you might want to go see a doctor as soon as possible yeah they can catch it in your leg before it gets to your lungs you stay in a good chance of surviving but if you suddenly experience chest pain shortness of breath or maybe even a fainting spell then that might mean that the blood clot out to your lungs and you should seek medical attention immediately and one more high blood pressure related one are uh silent heart attacks
in case you weren't afraid enough of normal volume heart attacks now there's silent heart attacks according to the American Heart associate ation there are around 85,000 heart attacks in the US every year out of those 170,000 of them are silent and of course by silent they mean that the person who had the heart attack showed little to no symptoms meaning these people had a heart attack and didn't even know it silent heart attacks are usually found by accident kind of like the anism I was talking about earlier it's usually when a patient's being given an
electrocardiogram and they just happen to see the readings for it like I know a guy who um had a silent heart attack apparently but he didn't know that he had it until he got his his blood taken for some other reason they did a blood test and they found that his C reactive protein was through the roof which kind of cracks with a heart attack so while a silent heart attack is obviously survivable um even not particularly unpleasant it does do damage to the heart sometimes significantly and can increase your risk of heart failure by
35% it can also increase your risk of having a stroke some of the symptoms you can look out for include indigestion uh feeling like maybe there's a strained muscle in your chest or in your upper back and um if you have excessive fatigue that lasts for a really long time that's something to pay attention to well there's a couple more diseases I want to talk about that are not high blood pressure related or cancer related but they are my nightmare related the first one is rabies so look we really don't hear that much about rabies
anymore mostly because we've done a really good job of vaccinating ourselves and our pets against it so now it's very uncommon to actually get rabies but the reason we did such a good job of vaccinating against r rabes is because rabies is a nightmare it's a disease that's really easy to prevent but if you somehow fail to prevent it and you get it and you start showing symptoms uh you will die the end there is no treatment for rabies once you have it you are done finished it has a 100% kill rate you will be
lucky to last a week and during that last week of your life what you can expect to find is fever or a headache at first maybe slightly flu like symptoms you'll have some nausea some vomiting and then things will start getting confusing you'll be anxious and agitated for no reason you might not know where you are sometimes you'll lose your balance you'll hyper salivate and drool all over the place while your limbs begin to uncontrollably nervously shake and that's when things start to get really weird cuz people in the later stages of rabies develop Hydrophobia
a fear of water basically that's so severe that it prevents them from drinking a lot of people rabies literally just like die from not drinking any water because your body will literally not let you drink water like something in their brains just sends them into convulsions if they try to drink this has been captured a few times and it's super harrowing like you you can you can see that they're not fully in control of their brain anymore and it's also just harrowing because these people absolutely died within a few days of this being taken but
yeah in the final stages you basically just lose your your mind you can't sleep there are constant hallucinations your body becomes paralyzed until eventually you just stop breathing rabies is a virus that attacks the brain but it can travel from animal to animal in salivary glands uh when that animal bites another animal the virus infects the motor neurons Under the Skin this travels up the central nervous system to the brain where it does all its damage so yeah this is why people who work with animals are so serious about their shots this is a terrifying
disease and it's easy to prevent so just just do it just do the right thing get vaccinated and last but probably worst are pron diseases and yes that is multiple diseases prons simply put are proteins that don't fold correctly and then those messed up proteins reproduce themselves and create more messed up proteins and this happens over and over again until the cell ceases to function and when this happens in brain cells it can cause a Cascade of damage to horrifying effect and in keeping with the theme of this video you can have this disease for
up to a decade before you have any idea that this thing is just churning away inside you and then once the symptoms start to show up it's too late to do anything some of the various pron diseases include cor Feld yakob disease fatal Familia insomnia gers myrer Shanker syndrome and Kuru and preon diseases are transmissible you can get it by eating animals that have the disease or sharing food with someone that has the disease in fact I talked about Kuru in my Mysteries of the human body series on nebula it's a disease that was brought
about by canni iism in a tribe in Papo New Guinea they would um actually consume the bodies of their loved ones as part of their funeral rights and this brain disease that they call Kuru just kind of kept spreading around that way in cows it's called mad cow disease and in Deer it's often called chronic wasting disease research is ongoing into preon diseases but at the moment there's no cure or even treatment to slow down the progression of the disease uh just drugs to ease the symptoms by the way some of that research is going
into studying the connection that might be there between prons and Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease too also they're looking into chronic traumatic incopy that's a that's CTE that's the the football head injury thing that you always hear about so this has been a lot we talked about a lot of scary stuff here today but scientists and researchers are working on new ways to catch some of these diseases so that they can be treated in their early stages for example coloral cancer so in July of 2024 just a few months back the FDA approved a blood
test to detect it in people 45 years and older it works by screening for DNA fragments the tumors release into the bloodstream uh which is great but that said it's kind of limited in this detection of early stage colar rectal cancer and it's not considered a replacement for the tried and true colonoscopy researchers in the US recently developed a test that can identify 18 early stage cancers which is amazing and I can't wait for this to be a thing the test works by analyzing the person's blood proteins and plasma samples what they discovered was that
a limited set of proteins could differentiate normal samples from cancer samples they could even identify different types of cancer with pretty high accuracy the researchers that are working on this hope that someday they'll have a multis screening test that can test for all different types of cancer in one blood drop which is kind of what Theos was trying to do fraudulently it's a good idea if somebody could pull it off so hopefully that'll happen so when it comes to Alzheimer's and cool stuff happened in July at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference where some researchers offered
results on several new blood tests for detecting the disease it was found that the privity ad2 blood test that measures to and amalo beta ratios detected Alzheimer's better than doctors and it had a 90% accuracy rate those another blood test it focused on finding tow proteins that said that it could find Alzheimer's patients even though they weren't showing any symptoms so this is like early on in the process and for those who are lucky enough to catch their Alzheimer's early the FDA approved a drug this year called dmab that has been shown to slow down
the process of the disease there's also some cool AI tools that are coming along that are detecting diseases earlier in a study published in nature medicine in June researchers showed that they could train a machine learning model to identify circulating tumor DNA from blood tests they showed success with the technology in people with breast and lung cancer melanoma and precancerous coloral polyps they were able to use AI to find subtle patterns in the sequencing data that would have been impossible for a human to do essentially it was able to separate the signal from the noise
AI is also being combined with thermal imaging to help predict a person's health researchers at peing University in Beijing are using AI to study the relationship between chronic illnesses and facial temperatures in a study of more than 2,800 participants the researchers found that people with warmer cheeks had guess what higher blood pressure I think by now we all know that we need to get our blood blood pressure checked so time to panic no it's not time to panic not necessarily look obviously if you have a family history of any of the things that I've talked
about in this video I definitely invite you to go deeper and do some better research and especially if you're experiencing some of the early symptoms you might want to see a doctor otherwise you'll probably be fine or I should say you can focus on any of the other many things that can go wrong in your body don't worry there's plenty more to stress out about actually know if there's anything that I've learned in researching this video it's that uh if you can keep your blood pressure down and your gums healthy you're good that alone will
solve or help prevent a lot of major problems so uh yeah that's the message of this video focused on the little things that you can do I for example have been trying to keep my blood pressure under control by eating fewer Meats so I recently switched to the vegetarian options over at Factor that's one of the really cool things about factor is that they've got different plans according to what you're going for whatever your diet AR needs might be like calorie smart keto Protein Plus or the one I just talked about vegan and veggie if
you're not familiar with Factor they deliver pre-made meals that have been designed by dietitians working alongside professional chefs to come up with nutritious meals that hit certain macros but are also very delicious like I've always kind of turned my nose up at things like cauliflower rice but there's a few meals from Factor where I I got to say it's pretty good we've also got Gourmet options with fet Mion shrimp truffle butter broccolini and aspar I guess for those nights when you want to be extra fancy and for those times when you just want to grab
something and run out the door their smoothies are like literally one of my favorite things in this world I have been an actual customer factors for a few years now and I like how they basically just make eating lunch the simplest thing in the world just 2 minutes in the microwave it's one less thing to worry about it's less expensive than restaurant delivery but it's just as good and like I said it's healthy I can feel good about eating it you want to give factor a try just to reward you for making it to the
end of this video they'll give you 50% off your first box all you got to do is head to factor75.com or click the link below and use the code 50 Joe Scott to get 50% off plus free shipping on your first Factor box if nothing else just go check out all the different meals they offer you're sure to find something you'll like so once again that's code 50 Joe Scott at factor 75.com to get 50% off plus free shipping do it you'll like it just do it don't ask just do it all right thank you
