i easily fall in love with graphic design packaging and in fact i've bought things in the past simply due to packaging alone but how do you make packaging that makes everybody smile from ear to ear here are some golden rules of package design that will help you on your next projects and if you don't even work on package designs then you probably will learn something very cool anyway and sponsoring today's video is an absolute must for graphic designers it's where you can download over 55 million resources envato elements learn more about that later in today's
video firstly the best packaging out there actually represents the brand and also the product itself what does that actually mean and how can we use it for our advantage a brand or business is selling something to a specific group of people and those people are linked to that brand so you need to make sure the packaging reflects the brand's identity and it appeals to that certain group this really helps improve brand recognition the color palettes and typography need to be on brand but let's look at some relevant examples so take this package design for wally
it's a home sensor company and of course the package design reflects a brand's colors but take a look at the product itself it's a very minimal and very clean kind of product then take a look at the package design we have a lot of macro open white space with minimal illustrations and a minimal use of typography the font choices are modern and minimal with clean sans serif options the package design is an extension of the brand itself and the product and this is very very important to remember when you're working on package designs if your
package design doesn't help express the brand or the products then it's pretty much failed at this point furthermore moving on to the next and golden rule of package design the packaging needs to be absolutely tailored to the target market of the product itself and here's a cosmetics brand haradi you can see the logo uses a set of fonts which if you do watch this channel often you will know these fonts suggest luxury class and sophistication the packaging tries to appeal to the more wealthy and upper class target markets by adding hints of gold mixed with
white this reinforces that sense of luxury in a minimal kind of way we all know that people with money like to have luxury it's pretty much a given thing then check out this packaging for a noodle brand so how could this packaging appeal to its target market well pot noodles are normally seen as unhealthy but this brand is trying to appear more authentic natural and healthy with personalized illustrations hand-drawn doodles like this express trust and authenticity and they also appear kind of personal and friendly this is a very very good way to appeal to people
who want a handcrafted or handmade product and something that's not made in a factory the instant leap mentally is that it's going to be more of a healthy product the next golden rule is to make sure you consider the context of the package design use now is your clients going to have their product in a refrigerator where cold dampness might have an impact is it going to be shown outside of a shop or storefront where it's exposed to weather will it be shown on a shelf with many other competition products now when you properly think
about this you will begin to make decisions on how the packaging is going to look feel and what materials it will be made from context is often king the next golden rule is that your design should stand out from the crowd even if there are no products similar to the clients on the market you still want yours to stand out and grab attention but in a good way of course so do some market research and see what other brands are doing in the same niche that you're working on and of course remember to keep your
design on brand when considering being different to other products the next golden rule is ergonomics and this is a hugely important golden rule and it's something that cannot be overlooked when you're thinking about package design now is your package design user friendly there's nothing worse than a package that is harder to crack into than fort knox does the package feel good when it's handled and interacted with is it durable and most importantly does the package design protect the product these are all questions you need to be asking yourself and you need to do things and
test things before you send them to a client or even of course the consumer a big part of package design is the designing but it's also the printing the testing and the making the next golden rule for package design is super relevant in this day and age and as being eco-friendly the world is basically on fire at this point where there's crazy and most people are aware of our impact on the planet packaging is one of the main culprits of our undoing in this world not only will your design be eco-friendly but it's actually a
pretty good unique selling point in this day and age but here's a really good example cape town coffee shop decided to make biodegradable cups which actually come with a sleeve composed of herb seeds that will grow into plants now after you've drank the coffee you can plant the cup and the sleeve directly into your garden the cups aren't just packaging but now they're also an innovative way to reduce harmful wastes and heck even to grow something so these are some of the most important rules when considering package design so yeah thanks to the sponsor of
