Are these allowed on the Duolingo English Test? What’s up everybody? It’s Caroline here from the Duolingo English Test with tips to help you to your best.
This week we’re talking about equipment. I see so many comments that are like, can I use this? Can I use that?
And today I’m going to answer them all. And I have a special box of props with me to show you each piece of equipment And I’ll let you know if you can use it or not. So we’re going to start first with our trusty laptop computer.
This is a yes. You need to take the Duolingo English Test on a computer That said you can also use a desktop computer if that’s what’s available to you It doesn’t have to be your personal computer, you can borrow one from somebody, just make sure you’re following all the rules and requirements. So, yes computer.
Next up we have an external keyboard. This is allowed, so this is a yes But remember that you can only use one keyboard to take the DET. So if you’re using this, and you have your laptop computer, don’t switch between them.
Choose one and use that for the entirety of the test. Next up we got, these are speakers, external speakers. You are allowed to use external speakers on the DET My recommendation is make sure they are really reliable and that they work well, because if your speakers don’t work halfway through the test, that’s going to be a bad situation So speakers, external, is OK.
See what else we got here. I’ve got my trusty headphones. I hope I’m not yelling.
But these are not allowed. Do not use headphones. No over-the-ear headphones, no earbuds We need to see your ears visible and uncovered, with no headphones for the entirety of the test.
That’s another reason why it’s important to have good speakers, because that’s where you’re going to be listening to all your listening prompts. Next up we have an external microphone. This is quite a heavy one, yours might look a bit different than this.
But an external microphone is allowed. The only thing that’s not allowed is if your microphone is connected to a pair of headphones. So imagine like a pair of wired headphones that have a little microphone right here, you’re not allowed to use that microphone because of the no headphones rule.
But something like this or a little stand microphone is ok. Desk is getting a little crowded. Ok next up we have an external webcam.
This is allowed to use if your computer does not have a webcam built in, or if the one that’s built in isn’t great quality. You can definitely use an external one. Just make sure when you attach it to your computer, it’s at eye level, like this, and make sure your face is centered in the frame.

This is a yes, this is recommended to have your computer connected to a power source The only thing I’ll say is make sure you do that before the test begins. Because you don’t want to be getting up in the middle of the test and connecting your computer to a power source, that could disrupt your test. So start off with your computer plugged in if you’re going to plug it in.
I’ve got a mouse in here. External mouse is OK if you want to use this. Same rule as with the keyboard, if you’re going to use an external mouse, don’t switch back and forth between a built-in mouse and the external, just choose one.
So yes. I’ve got a pen and paper in here. This is a no, you cannot take notes during the test, this is a digital test only.
So don’t have any pen and paper around you, make sure you’re area is nice and clear. I’ve got a second monitor here. This is a no!
Um, my cell phone? Also a no! You’re going to want to put this in another room so that it doesn’t go off during the test, and you’re not distracted, you’re not tempted to look at it.
These are not allowed. Last but not least, I’ve got a bottle of water, this is a yes. Stay hydrated test takers, very important.
