thousands of people are under evacuation orders in Southern California as strong winds fuel new wildfires in the Los Angeles area the Hughes Fire has scorched more than 10,000 acres in Los Angeles and Ventura counties as of Thursday evening it's currently 14% contained the smaller lagona fire in Ventura county is 0% contained and the seula fire in Los Angeles county is about 60% contained it adds to the ongoing destruction in the area as at least 28 people have died in the going wildfires in the state the Palisades fire is roughly 72% contained the Eden fire is
95% contained both of those have been burning for more than two weeks CBS news reporter Andre Gutierrez joins us now Andre what are the conditions well Lindsay when these fires break out they are fast moving and so are the developments let's begin with the lagona fire that broke out in Camario this morning at this point it is under control it took firefighters in Ventura County 2 hours to get it under control burned 50 acres right now as we speak there are 200 firefighters that remain on scene tending to hot spots at one point they had
to evacuate the campus of Cal State Channel Islands that is no longer the case no structures were destroyed because of that fire that is also the case here in cast The Heart of the Hughes Fire that broke out yesterday morning and it was one of those fast moving ones that at the beginning started with 50 acres grew up to 5,000 acres in the first two hours let's set the scene out here right now as we speak the containment is at 24% we have beyond that Ridge in the distance cruise on the ground creating a fire
line over across the road here H Lake Hughes Road you'll see the reservoir this is where we have seen Choppers throughout the afternoon one actually seems like it may be coming in they have been coming in to suction out water so far more than 113,000 gallons of water have been used to conin the fire here and battle it out let's see if he's moving in uh to that Reservoir it looks like he may be going in if it does happen we'll show it to you live on television uh but the biggest thing has been the
wind we are under a Le Red Flag Warning have been throughout the day and will go into the tomorrow morning uh however even though we have had winds gusting up to 30 m an hour that has been under the threshold allowing these Choppers to fly in the air cuz at certain point they can not be able to go up in the air uh however that has been able to those winds have not been that bad uh at this point uh we are just waiting to see uh if any other fires were to break out but
the biggest thing is that these firefighters are battling these blaz blazes that break out aggressively Andre thank you to so much to you and your camera person for showing us that that was incredible what can you tell us about the much-needed rain over the weekend but also the concerns associated with that so the thing with all the fires that are broken out in the Pacific Palisades in the eaten and Altadena area is the fact that you have scorched earth right you look at this it is uh bured through the vegetation so there's nothing holding the
soil down so any amount of rain moderate rainfall can create essentially mudslides uh and so they are bracing for that so besides these fire Crews working on the containment issues you also have in uh over in the aladen area fire Crews that are filling up sandbags and distributing those to Residents to make sure that they are able to shore up their properties uh in case uh the drainage system gets overwhelmed with any amount of rainfall because they don't want that toxic debris to be flowing down the streets of alauna or the Pacific Palisades okay Andre
Gutierrez again a big thank you to you and your crew
