paid to the government. If you add in state tax, local sales, property fees, Obamacare, probably almost 60% of what I earn, that's a lot. And I still wouldn't mind if Bernie Sanders would stop saying the rich don't pay taxes.
And [applause] something snapped inside HBO's studio that night, and nobody in the room saw it coming. Not the audience, not the producers, not even Bernie Sanders himself sitting there with that familiar grandfatherly grin expecting another cozy sitdown with an old ally. But Bill Maher wasn't in the mood for polite.
Not tonight. Not anymore. The lights hit, the cameras rolled, and within the first 90 seconds, Maher did something no liberal host has done in 20 years.
He looked directly at the face of the American socialist movement and started dismantling it in real time. No warm-up, no safety net, no mercy. Before we go any deeper into the cinematic ambush, do me one favor.

The kids think that stuff that happened before their appearance on the planet didn't really happen, but it did. We've run this experiment many times, and the results are always obvious.
Here's capitalist South Korea at night from space. [music] Here's socialist North Korea. Yeah.
In 1990, Venezuela [music] was wealthier than Poland. But then Poland, finally free of Soviet style economics, went all in on capitalism. And now their economy is as big as Japan.
And people there have high [music] wages, low inflation, cars, vacations, homes. Meanwhile, Venezuela traded capitalism for Hugo Chavez's Socialism for the 21st century, which turned out to be like socialism in the last century or any century. [music] mess.
[applause] Demar didn't open with statistics. He didn't quote economists. [music] He didn't cite think tanks.
He pulled up a single photograph. The Korean Peninsula at night from space. The South glowing like a supernova.
The North, nothing. Pure black. A country of 26 million people erased from the map by the very ideology Bernie has been selling for 50 [music] years.

No commentary needed. Then came the second punch. Poland versus Venezuela.
1990. Venezuela was richer, wealthier, prouder. Today, Poland is the fastest growing economy in the entire European Union.
Venezuela inflation cracked 200% this year alone. According to the IMF, their currency is confetti. Same starting line.
Two philosophies. One built roads. The other built ruins.
If you think New York can somehow reinvent this wheel, you're in for a rude awakening. [applause] Zoran can't make your wishes come true. You're thinking of Zar.
[applause] Democratic socialism is like a dating profile. Things look great until you meet up in the real world. For example, Bernie Sanders, [music] his big thing was always bringing singlepayer health care to our country of 340 million.
[music] But when liberal tie-dyed Vermont tried to do it for a population of 626,000, it collapsed like that poor in the Oval Office last week. [applause] Bernie, AOC, Mandani are not Democrats. They'll be the first to tell you that they're democratic socialists and that's a very different thing and I don't think people know that yet.
And then Mar dropped the line that turned the entire internet into a meme factory overnight. Zoran can't make your wishes come true. You're thinking of Zar.
The audience froze then erupted because everyone in that studio knew exactly what he meant. Modern socialism has stopped pretending to be a policy. It's become a carnival machine.
Drpping a quarter of resentment. Out pops a promise. Free rent, free groceries, free everything paid for by someone who conveniently isn't in the room.
But that wasn't even the weirdest part because the moment the laughter faded, Maher pulled out receipts nobody expected him to have. Well, I think Mandani is running an extraordinary campaign. Yes.
Uh he has, as I understand it, 80,000 people today knocking on doors for him. And that's how you win elections. And that's what I believe.
That's what I always believe. You don't go to people of money and do all these stupid 30-cond ads. You mobilize people at the grassroots level.
And I think in terms of democratic socialism, what people understand is there is something wrong in America today when one man, Mr Musk, owns more wealth than the bottom 52% of American households. Am I right? Mhm.
Yeah. When we have more income and wealth inequality than we've ever had. When in the richest country in the world, we have the highest rate of childhood poverty of almost any major nation.
the highest rate of senior poverty of almost any nation. We have a health care system which is falling apart. Kids can't afford to go to college, housing crisis.
And people are saying, you know what, here's the radical idea. This is what democratic socialism basically means. Let's have a government that works for all the people, not just the billionaire class.
Here's the part they don't put in the campaign ads. Vermont, Bernie's own backyard, the whitest, tiniest, most progressive state in the country. population smaller than Fresno.
In 2011, they tried to build Bernie's dream, the singlepayer utopia, the blueprint, the proof of concept. By 2014, it was dead. Governor Peter Shumlin, a Democrat, walked out to that podium and killed the project himself.
Why? Because the payroll tax alone would have hit 11. 5%.
Businesses were already packing bags. The math didn't just fail, it humiliated the movement. And here's the part that stings the most.
If 626 thousand people couldn't sustain it in the most Bernie friendly zip code in America, what exactly makes anyone believe 340 million will? That's when things completely spiraled. As to explain the [clears throat] American economy to me, I know I've said this before, I still don't get it.
Last week was tax day and as usual because HBO is so generous and I'm sure so will be the new owners. [laughter] I paid to the government if you add in state tax, local sales, property fees, Obamacare, probably almost 60% of what I earn. That's a lot.
And I still wouldn't mind if Bernie Sanders would stop saying the rich don't pay taxes and And while I'm sure the super rich with their army of accountants and corporate loopholes get away with murder, us regular rich people pay a ton of taxes. And who stands up and gives us a pat on the back? Nobody.
That's who. [applause] The top 10% pay 72% of all federal income taxes and the bottom half [music] 3%. The Democratic socialists talk about socialism like we don't already have a lot.
Social Security, unemployment, Medicare, nutritional assistance, Medicaid, Obamacare, disability, housing subsidies. Again, not against it. Just the same question.
How can you be soaking the rich and failing the poor so badly? This is the moment everything shifted. Mah didn't have to attack Bernie.
Bernie attacked himself on camera, live, unedited. He praised Zoron Mandani as the future. He name dropped Elon Musk as the villain.
He owned every label the moderate Democrats have been trying desperately to peel off him for the last decade. Mah just leaned back and let it happen. Because here's the truth the DNC has been trying to bury.
Bernie isn't accidentally standing next to the Socialist Wing. He is the Socialist Wing. He built it.
He fed it. He handed it the microphone. And now it's swallowing his entire party whole.
The clip circulated for 72 hours straight. Twitter, Tik Tok, Instagram, every corner of the internet lit up. Because when the founder of the movement confirms the movement on tape, there's no plausible deniability left for anyone wearing a blue tie in Washington.
Question to you, I guess, is the word socialist. I want to get right to this because I want to help your campaign. I want to see you get the nomination.
I want to see you do [cheering] um [applause] we have to not we have to teach Americans what this is. We do. And I I don't know if we're doing that yet.
I don't think most Americans realize they're already socialists in certain respects. Okay, let's start off with what it is not what we want to change. We want to deal with the grotesque level of income and wealth inequality in America.
Very few people think it is acceptable or moral that the top onetenth of 1% owns almost as much wealth as the bottom 90%. That we have seen a proliferate. But see Bernie, you always say that and I I think even the even the Republicans are not for income inequality.
They hear that but it doesn't compute that that's going to be solved by socialism. Socialism is the programs they already like. They like social security.
That's socialism. They like Medicare. They like the VA.
They like the military. Then Mar dropped the statistic that Bernie's entire career has been engineered to avoid. The top 10% of American earners pay 72% of all federal income taxes.
The bottom 50% 3%. Three. Read that twice.
Then read it again. Every rally chant, every viral Bernie tweet, every tax the rich t-shirt at Coachella, all of it built on a myth that IRS data destroyed years ago. The Tax Foundation has been publishing this pattern for over a decade.
It's not hidden. It's not controversial. It's not up for debate.
The rich are already paying massively, disproportionately, overwhelmingly. So, if they're paying that much and Americans are still drowning in medical debt, still watching their paycheck shrink, still losing homes, the problem was never the tax rate. The problem is what happens to the money after it enters the building.
I don't know if we're still undemonizing this word socialism. This is my big thing tonight to get you to [snorts] undemonize this word because you know they do polls on who people would vote for like would people vote for a woman, a Jew, a black? Those are in like the the low 90s like 92 91% of the people and of course the other 8% I think we know who those people are.
You you won't be getting their vote. Uh then like 75% of Americans would now vote for a person. That's a big change from 10 years ago.
60% would vote for a Muslim. 58% would vote for an atheist. Socialist 47.
It's at the very bottom of the hear socialist. They think herpes. Bernie.
Then Mah leaned forward, looked Bernie dead in the eye, and delivered the sentence that reframed the entire conversation. Americans are already living inside massive socialist programs. Social Security, Medicare, the VA, public schools, the military itself, the largest government-run enterprise on planet Earth.
The country isn't starving for socialism. The country is drowning in dysfunction wearing a socialist uniform. Mars argument wasn't just clever.
It was surgical because if the programs we already fund can barely function, adding five more won't fix anything. It'll multiply the failure. Bernie sat there, blinked, adjusted his glasses, tried to pivot, but the internet had already screenshotted the moment.
But [applause] now this has been studied. The amount of tax revenue that we would get just from taxing the people who I think your fans think you're talking about the people who own a yacht does not come close to covering what you want to pay for. Not true.
Not true. Come on. You you're saying by only taxing the top.
No. What I'm saying is there have been articles out there that have been really unfair and wrong. For example, what they are suggesting if we move toward a Medicare for all singlepayer program which guarantees healthcare to all people, it would cost a lot of money.
That's true. But what they forget to tell you is it would be much more cost effective than the dysfunctional system we have right now, which is the most expensive per capita on earth. But it couldn't even work in your home state of Vermont.
They were going to institute it and and the governor said, "It's going to cost too much money. We just can't do it. it would be the entire budget.
Then came the data point that hit like a brick through a window. Only 47% of Americans say they'd vote for a socialist. 47 lower than atheists, lower than every other category Gallup has tracked in four decades of polling.
Read that again slowly. Americans would rather elect someone who doesn't believe in God than someone who believes in Bernie's economic model. Meanwhile, capitalism polls above 60%.
Socialism sits at 39% and falling. This is the seal scene Bernie has smashed his forehead against for his entire career. This is why he lost in 2016.
Why he lost in 2020. Why the movement keeps losing house seats in swing districts while winning applause in college auditoriums. You cannot rebrand a word the country has already rejected.
And Mah just held up the receipt on prime time. Money can't buy happiness, but it sure can buy healthiness. Half the country can buy access to concierge doctors, specialists, new treatments, personal trainers, nutritionists, private chefs, and whatever Gwyneth Paltro is putting in her.
And the other half has the place I was just talking about, Remote Area Medical, the popup healthc care clinic that rolls into town once a year like a county fair, except instead of riding the tilt world, a volunteer doctor pulls your infected tooth. And the saddest thing in the 60 Minutes piece is that nothing has changed since they covered it in 2008. Same line of cars parked overnight so people make sure to get seen.
same people who work two jobs but still can't afford to see a doctor unless a touring nonprofit sets up shop in a parking lot. But here's the truth. You're not going to get health care to these people by threatening to tax and eat the rich.
[music] You raise billionaires taxes, they just leave the state or they leave the country or in some cases the planet. Then Maher went international and global and brutal. Raise taxes too high, he said.
And the wealthy don't complain. They don't protest. They don't tweet.
They just leave silently, elegantly, permanently. California lost 260,000 residents in a single year. The wealthiest earners led the exodus.
New [music] York, over 100,000 gone. France tried a wealth tax and watched an entire class of investors relocate to Belgium overnight. And here's the twist.
Nobody in the Eat the Rich crowd wants to hear. When billionaires leave, the middle class inherits the entire bill, every promise made at every rally. Suddenly, it's coming out of the plumber's paycheck, the teacher's paycheck, the barista's paycheck.
The tax base doesn't shrink, it transfers downward. That's when things completely spiraled. The recent government shutdown, he volunteered to pay all the TSA workers himself.
You know, with couch money. That's how super rich our super rich are. They can single-handedly fund entire government programs.
Okay. So, let's make that a thing. The adopt a Cause Challenge for billionaires.
[applause] Teachers who buy school supplies with their own money or people without homes or disaster victims. Whatever it is, make the rich competitive about solving it because that's all they care about anyway, beating each other. [applause] Yeah.
Just skip the middleman, the government and the healthc care bureaucracies that for whatever reason, no matter how much they take in, never seem to get enough to the people and just shame the billionaires into doing it directly because they have all the money. And then Mah pitched something so absurd it accidentally became genius. Let billionaires adopt problems like adopting a highway but bigger.
Elon takes the space program. Bezos takes the postal service. Zuckerberg takes Okay, maybe not Zuckerberg.
The audience laughed because it's a joke, but it's also not a joke. Remember the last government shutdown? A single billionaire volunteered to pay the salaries of every TSA worker in America out [music] of pocket from his couch.
If one guy with a phone and a checkbook can cover an entire federal payroll during a crisis, why is Washington still failing to deliver mail on time? Why are veterans waiting six months for a doctor? Mah didn't ask that question to be funny.
He asked it because nobody else on liberal television has had the courage to. Then days later, Greg Gutfeld picked up where Mah stopped and [music] delivered the sentence Bernie will hear echoing in his ears until retirement. If the top 1% pay the largest share of taxes, which the IRS confirms every single fiscal year, then why should their rate be higher instead of lower?
The room went silent because it's the question that unravels the entire fair share language the socialist movement has been built on. Because fair share was never about fairness. It was about resentment dressed up in policy clothes.
And resentment has never built a functioning economy. Not once, not anywhere. Not in 5,000 years of human history.
From Rome to the Soviet Union to Venezuela to San Francisco, the pattern is the same. Punish the productive, reward the loudest. Watch the whole thing collapse in slow motion.
How he's saying it, but the stuff he's [snorts] saying is infuriating. Who pay? He says, uh, it's the top 1% get the most.
They also pay the most taxes, the top 1%. And he always says this thing, billionaires should say pay the same rate as everybody else. No, everybody else should pay the same rate as a billionaire.
Why does it have to go higher? Theirs should go lower. Yeah.

Bernie Sanders has run for president twice. 1 zero. His movement has grown louder, angrier, more theatrical, more meme friendly than ever.
But the polling gets worse. The state experiments keep failing. The math keeps rejecting the vision.
And now even Bill Maher, the guy who used to defend him, is publicly dismantling him in front of millions. The country has read the fine print. The receipts are in.
The satellite photos are undeniable. The Vermont graveyard is real. The Gallup ceiling isn't moving.
Bernie built a movement powerful enough to reshape a party and unpopular enough to hand the White House to the other side in 2028. That's not a prediction. That's arithmetic.
And Maher just did what no Democrat has been brave enough to do in a decade. He said it out loud on camera without flinching. So now I want to hear from you.
