They would stuff nails down the barrel to shoot at their enemies if they ran out of bullets. You see, loose gunpowder would be rammed into the barrel with a long stick, and almost anything could have been added on the top and pushed down. When the trigger was pulled, it would ignite the gunpowder, sending metal flying in all directions. So, even though it was designed to shoot bullets, almost anything could be turned into ammo.
