this is one of the most important manga in Shonen Jump it's called ultimate Exorcist Koshi and I can only describe it as if one piece in Jutsu Kaizen had a manga collab at Hot Topic Koshi seems like just another Exorcist manga but it is one of the silliest and most refreshing manga I've read in the last year it starts out with the main character Koshi a talented young Exorcist who cares more about saving everyone and less about killing demons the first chapter comes off like a typical Shonen Jump manga because you have a pure-hearted protagonist
who just wants to protect his friends so when I read the first chapter last summer I didn't really think anything of it I thought it was funny enough but I wasn't in a rush to read chapter 2 but fast forward to the end of 20124 and I've heard nothing but good things I kept hearing about how good the art was or how cool the fights were or more importantly how great Kyoshi was so all this time I was like okay okay I should really try it again but I never made the time it wasn't until
I found out that the Creator shichi usui was an assistant to ichir Oda that I was like okay now I really need to check this out and it doesn't take long for you to realize just how one piece coded this manga really is Koshi is by definition an exorcist manga but it's formatted like a comedy manga consisting of mostly conventional paneling and a lot of running gags but the biggest giveaway is definitely the art style it's not obvious at first but the more you read Kyoshi the more you start to notice little quirks from One
Piece like you look at the hands and you're like oh those are one piece hands you look at the way usui draws smiles and you're like oh that's a Luffy smile and you see the way he draws certain titles and you're like oh that's the thing from one piece but the biggest one by far is this character aari you take one look from aari and you're like oh that's just Nami except now she's from Tokyo Avengers in fact a lot of these characters look like they're just from Tokyo Revengers it's a nice trick on Uso's
part because if it weren't for the literal demons it would be pretty easy to forget that this is an exorcist manga this is very different from something like jiujitsu Kaizen where a spirit shows up and Slaughters everybody in Kyoshi a demon will show up and then look embarrassed when it arrives before the main character this is a very light-hearted manga so by giving all of the characters these Punk designs usui presents a story that is much sillier than your typical Exorcist manga but clearly it looks different from manga like one piece or my hero Academia
it's these edgy looking characters that really give Koshi a unique sense of style and on the same note it's the characters that get you hooked on the story right away but before I say more on that make sure to like the video if you're enjoying it so far it's the easiest way to support the channel and it helps spread the video to other viewers like you now usually my criticism for a new manga is something about the characters I'll usually read a new manga and be like all right well the main character is cool but
I'm not so sure about the side characters yet or something like okay well I like these characters but I think they need to be fleshed out more ironically now that I'm caught up on Kyoshi I think its characters are its strongest selling point admittedly the comedy is pretty good but it's a show a jump manga so it's doing that thing where it's still dancing the line between gag manga and action Series so the comedy is good but it's nothing crazy and while there's definitely some potential for truly insane fights it's definitely not there just yet
but in just 26 chapters I'm already in love with kyoshi's characters Koshi himself is a cool character he's like the exact opposite of your typical protagonist usually they're like AA where they have no powers but they're really confident Koshi is actually super talented but he's shy and nerdy because he overthinks everything so he's fun because he's got all these cool Powers but he's also goofy because he tries to get 666 as a tattoo but screws up the Latin or he gets beat red when girls even look at him or he freezes up in a fight
because he's super talented but he's still really scared of ghosts now kyoshi's Shy Boy Antics are balanced out by his mentor sakaki and sakaki is part of the new trend of anime mentors that look like they should be giving tattoos and starting their own metal bands but are actually super chill kind of like engine from gachi AATA funny enough sakaki is in the same boat engine used to be in we don't know that much about him but we know he's cool he's got a cool design he's got a cool Power where he teams up with
a demon and gets a power boost by Rolling Dice and he's the most chill character in the main cast but we do know some stuff about him like how he saved Koshi when he was a kid and made him want to become an exorcist or how he's secretly working with kyoshi's grandmother who we haven't met yet but is supposed to be an even bigger badass plus he runs his own Chinese restaurant so if nothing else we love sakaki because we want to support small business owners now I also really like all of the other characters
there's aari who I mentioned before she's one of the more minor characters at the moment but on top of having a fun design she brings a fun energy to the team where she's always happy and even teases Koshi since he's always so nervous and usoi does a nice job of presenting her as weaker than Kyoshi but more experienced and she doesn't make it her whole identity that she's the weak one it's actually kind of nice because you can just have this fun character that doesn't feel like they need to constantly prove themsel you also have
the other side characters like kyoshi's new friend who can control a friendly demon or SOS The Talented Elite who always wants to compete with Koshi but is just as nerdy there's a bunch more characters but you get the idea they're all really fun and they all stand out with their Punk designs and like I said with most manga it's got some cool fights but I'm not really sold on the characters with Koshi I'm already in love with the characters obviously it's only about 30 chapters in and they still need to be fleshed out but it's
already nailed these character Dynamics to the point where I feel like this manga is completely different from anything that's in jump right now but I wouldn't go so far as to say Kyoshi has built its own spot and jump just yet which brings me to my my last talking point so with any new Jump manga there's always two questions when it debuts the first question is okay is it worth reading as I've just explained Kyoshi is definitely worth reading so now that it's got a few volumes under its belt the next question we want to
know is will it make the cuts Shonen Jump is unique in that it's more aggressive than other magazines when it comes to cutting new manga a manga could do the same numbers as a series in other magazines but because jump has certain expectations it usually Cuts new manga by certain points if it's really not doing well it might get four volumes Koshi is just around that point so it should be safe until at least this summer so the real question is will it last until the end of the year now if you ask me I
think Koshi is going to be a new regular in Shona jump it's an exorcist manga and manga readers love Exorcist series it's also a comedy and Japanese fans love their gag manga hence roboco and like I said its Punk characters give Kyoshi a unique sense of style ironically all this shown in manga is missing is some intense action I think if it's going to retain a spot as an exorcist manga I think it's going to need a big emotional battle with powerups and backstories that really draws in the more mainstream readers so far Kyoshi has
kind of tiptoed around the more conventional action tropes it did just have a small tournament Arc which played out well for an early Arc admittedly it has this power ranking system with factions and cross paladins and Demon Lords which feels like it might be ramping up too fast but I don't think that's any reason to be concerned just yet plus we are entering what seems like it might be called The Black Parade Arc where it's building up to be a massive demon Invasion we've already seen a massive battle with Kyoshi and a training Arc so
if this Arc plays out just right and there's serious fights with cool art emotional backstories and the characters get cool new powers then I think Koshi will successfully build a new home for itself in the list of running manga and shown and jump it has all the potential to be an exciting action series it's got a sense of humor that reminds me of Classics like Dragon Ball but it's also got an aesthetic that somehow brilliantly balances the styles of both one piece and Tokyo Revengers will it be the next big thing probably not if anything
I kind of see it filling in the spot left by Black Clover not that it's the spiritual successor of Black Clover or anything like that but Black Clover was always that series that gave the other manga a run for their money but could never quite stand in the same Spotlight Kyoshi is kind of giving the same energy right now it's definitely not getting the same hype as kagachi I do see people talking about it just as much as Ichi the witch but again it is still pretty early for now I can say this I love
the characters I love the art style and I'm really looking forward to how ultimate Exorcist Kyoshi becomes one of my brand new favorite manga but now I'd like to hear what you think how would you rate ultimate Exorcist Kyoshi how does it compare to Jump's other new manga share your thoughts and see what everyone else has to say down in the comments I'll pick my favorite and share it as comment of the week on my community Tab and if you'd like to help pick which manga I review next then make sure to become a Shonen
