welcome everyone this is activity 3. 1. 2 packaging specimens for shipment to referral sites we're still under module 3.
1 pre-examination phase and qms 3 path of workflow management the key message for this activity is if the laboratory receives a quality specimen then the patient can receive a quality result in this activity we learn how to properly packaged specimens for transportation to referral sites using triple packaging principles to ensure not just the viability of the sample but safety for all stakeholders let's review the requirements for examination by referral Laboratories from ISO 15189 specifically Clause 6. 8. 0 it states in the notes a a referral laboratory is one to which laboratory management chooses to submit a sample or subsample for examination or when routine examinations cannot be carried out so either as a lab you choose that particular laboratory to run certain tests for you for whatever reason it could be that um your hospital offices the services but you don't have the infrastructure equipment to carry out that test so you come into some Financial agreement with a referral site where they do the test for you it could also be in extenuating circumstances for example if your equipment has broken down and you cannot carry out the test that you choose a referral lab that you then refer the samples in your patients to so in the sequence of referral this is what happens so you have yellow Hospital you see a patient in yellow hospital and you take a sample for a specific test request this sample you do not run in your facility and so you have an agreement with blue lab for them to be your referral lab and to run that sample so we package and we transport that sample to Blue lab blue lab does the examination so they perform the test as the referral lab and then they send back the result to Yellow hospital and then that result is then used as information to make the diagnosis and to determine care for the patient let's look further at the requirements and the 6.
8. 0 where it talks about unless otherwise specified in the agreement the referring lab in this case yellow hospital and not the referral lab shall be responsible for ensuring that examination results of the referral laboratory are provided to the person making the request so here it is really clear that you yellow lab who is referring the sample is ultimately responsible for ensuring that the result is obtained back from the referral lab in this case blue lab and sent to the clinician for testing so again the referring lab is responsible for reporting the result from the referral lab to the requesting physician this way the referring laboratory can monitor tat and report on content as well so it is the referring lab's responsibility and not the referral lab when we look further into closes 6. 8.
1 and closes 6. 8.
