starting over in a new country can seem like a thrilling adventure but what happens when that dream becomes a nightmare cultural challenges or watching your savings vanish before your eyes this is the harsh reality for many expats including myself who regret the move in today's video I'll reveal the 10 countries most likely to ruin your future in 2024 and why some so-called dream destinations may not be all they promise want to know which places to avoid let's dive in number 10 Brazil Brazil is one of those places that will charm you with its Samba beats
stunning beaches and Carnival parades but behind the Rhythm and sunshine expats often discover a much tougher reality I remember my first weeks in Rio de Janeiro the energy was electric the Suns sets over Copa Cabana were jaw-dropping and I thought this is it but soon enough reality knocked on the door and not gently Brazil's crime rate is no joke in 2024 it stands at about 23 homicides per 100,000 people and trust me you feel that tension in big cities like re o o and Son poo I remember a fellow xat having her phone snatched right
out of her hand in broad daylight it's like you're always looking over your shoulder and that constant worry wears you down but it doesn't stop there finding a job in Brazil as a foreigner not easy the economy is a roller coaster and unless you speak fluent Portuguese your options shrink fast sure English is around in tourist areas but once you're living everyday life things get tricky I found myself in some hilariously frustrating situations where my limited Portuguese turned a simple coffee order into a game of Charades then if you're moving with a family get ready
for some serious sticker shock Brazil's public education system has its issues so many expats turn to private schools however the cost is anything but affordable tuition can range from $5,000 to $200,000 a year that's not something most expats expect when they think of a cheaper life in South America and don't get me started on Brazil's bureaucracy want to get your visa sorted be prepared to wait and wait I once spent weeks chasing down the right paperwork which left me wondering if I'd ever actually get to settle into the country or just keep filling out forms
for eternity oh and the weather yes Brazil's natural beauty is legendary but the climate that's a whole different story depending on where you live you're dealing with extreme humidity heavy rainfall and even the threat of natural disasters one minute you're enjoying a picture perfect Beach and the next you're drenched in sweat or caught in a downpour Brazil might look like a dream destination but the reality can feel more like a tropical survival course so the big question is are you ready for the real Brazil or have you ever had an xbat experience that wasn't quite
what you expected let me know in the comments below number nine France but what happens when you leave the tropical chaos of Brazil behind for the sophisticated Romance of Europe when I first moved to France I was seduced by the Romantic image of Paris cobblestone streets Charming cafes and of course the beautiful French language I imagin myself sipping espresso at a cafe and chatting with friendly locals but spoiler alert reality hit harder than I expected let's start with the language now my high school French had me thinking I could at least order a croissant but
I was wrong simple tasks like grocery shopping or handling a phone bill became a daily struggle and don't get me started on the paperwork ever tried opening a bank account in France it's like running an obstacle course but instead of hurdles you get endless forms in French you'll need proof of employment proof of address and honestly proof of patience I spent hours in line at the bank clutching what felt like every document I'd ever owned then there's the social side of things you'd think it would be easy to make friends in the city of love
right wrong French Social Circles are tight and if you're new you might feel like you're knocking on the door of a private club that you'll never get into many expats myself included talk about feeling isolated it's not that people are rude just reserved and it takes time to break through the work culture didn't help either if you're used to a flexible schedule brace yourself the French work long hours and take fewer days off than you might expect the work life balance it's not exactly what I'd hoped for now let's talk about the cost of living
Paris is stunning but it comes with a hefty price tag renting a one-bedroom apartment downtown can cost anywhere between $2,200 a month and even outside the city center it's not much cheaper utilities for a modest apartment another $160 or so add in groceries transportation and other Essen and suddenly you're spending close to $3,500 a month just to get by oh and if you want to rent good luck you'll need a hefty deposit a local guarantor and enough paperwork to make your head spin even Healthcare which France is famous for isn't entirely free the system covers
about 83% of your medical expenses but that still leaves you paying for the rest many expats opt for private insurance to avoid surpris prizes which only adds to the costs but if you think Europe is tough what about the so-called land of opportunity is the American dream still alive or is it just a really expensive experiment before you find out I have a special 10-second request for all of you listening if you can help me in any way just hit the notification Bell and hit that subscribe button it helps this channel so much and if
you do that I will do everything I can to make this show even better for you deal number eight United States when you think of the American dream you probably imagine success freedom and endless opportunities but for many expats the reality can feel more like a nightmare I've seen it firsthand the political climate in the US can be very tense depending on where you land your views might clash with your neighbors making you feel like a stranger in your own neighborhood and Trust me it's not just about who you voted for it can get awkward
fast then there's Healthcare oh the US healthc care system you might need a PhD to understand it and the costs astronomical if you end up in a hospital you could be staring down a bill upwards of $100,000 and that's without Universal coverage especially if you have a pre-existing condition suddenly that dream of living the good life takes a hit when you realize even basic health care might cost more than you ever imagined safety is another big concern let's talk about gun violence while some states are safer than others in places like New Mexico or Alaska
there are over 700 violent crimes per 100,000 residents making you think twice about walking the streets after dark on the other hand States like Rhode Island and Maine report much lower rates of violent crime but still the overall atmosphere can leave you looking over your shoulder more than you'd like and the cost of living it's no joke rent alone can be a shocker imagine paying around $33,000 a month for a three-bedroom apartment downtown and even if you move to the outskirts it's still about $2,000 compare that to other countries and you'll see why so many
exbats start feeling the pinch moving expenses yep you're looking at thousands just to get settled and once you're in your new home there's always something that needs fixing Transportation isn't cheap either Americans Fork over around $4,200 a year just to get from point A to point B plus mortgage rates can leave you locked into an expensive deal especially if you move during the pandemic when the housing market was unpredictable so while the American dream shines bright it's worth considering the challenges that come with it is it still the land of opportunity or just a really
expensive experiment you decide number seven Japan when I first thought about moving to Japan I pictured polite people spotless streets and endless bowls of ramen it felt like the Ultimate Adventure but once the initial excitement wore off the reality hit me and let me tell you living in Japan is not quite as Instagram perfect as it seems one of the first things I noticed was how hard it is to integrate into Japan's homogeneous society no matter how friendly people were it always felt like there was a line between me and them an invisible barrier that
said you're not from here I wondered if I'd ever stopped feeling like an outsider then there's the language sure English is taught in schools but don't expect everyone to be fluent my first grocery shopping trip let's just say I spent way too long trying to figure out if I was buying soy sauce or something completely different and don't get me started on Reading utility bills every envelope felt like a cryptic puzzle work life buckle up Japan's rigid work culture is a world of its own long hours strict hierarchies and a level of company loyalty that
would put any superhero to shame where I come from work life balance was a thing in Japan balance means staying at your desk until it's dark outside every single day burnout anyone the cost of living also adds to the stress a one-bedroom apartment in central Tokyo expect to pay over $11,000 a month and that's before you factor in utilities groceries and train fairs suddenly the dream of living in Japan started to feel a lot more expensive than expected and let's not forget the weather summers in Japan are hot and humid while Winters can be harsh
especially in the north but what really keeps you on your toes earthquake typhoons and the occasional tsunami warning there's nothing quite like waking up to your bed shaking and wondering is this the big one now here's something people don't talk about enough mental health Japan is not exactly known for being open about therapy and counseling if you're feeling stressed or isolated finding help can be tricky And discussing mental health can still feel a bit taboo so is Japan still the dream destination for some yes but for others the reality can be much more challenging than
expected you might find yourself asking is this what I signed up for what about a vibrant country like Mexico surely it's more laid-back well let's see how living South of the Border compares to the Land of the Rising Sun number six Mexico Mexico seemed like the Ultimate Dream sunny beaches vibrant culture and affordable living but as they say Reality Bites and for xats in 2024 it's biting hard picture this over 30,000 crime related deaths a year yes that's 30,000 and no that's not a typo cartels are running parts of the country and they're not shy
about using heavy weapons and drones we're talking Hollywood level action but in real life and trust me it's not as fun as it sounds kidnappings murders and attacks on journalists and human rights activists aren't just headlines here their daily concerns now about the economy Mexico is known for being budget friendly but don't be fooled costs are creeping up fast sure you might find rent for $600 to $1,000 in major cities but the day-to-day expenses add up I've heard from exbats who thought they'd live like kings only to be shocked by their grocery bills and utility
costs and then there's corruption picture this your sty by the police for something minor and instead of a warning they're expecting a little something extra to let you off the hook paying bribes isn't just a possibility it's practically a routine I've talked to folks who say they carry cash just for these situations fun right Healthcare is another mixed bag it's affordable sure but quality that depends in the cities you might get top-notch treatment but outside of urban areas it can be hit or miss oh and you'll never trust tap water again I know people who
won't even brush their teeth without bottled water thanks to the dodgy infrastructure and power outages get used to them especially if you're not living in a major city if you're a punctual person prepare to lose your mind Mexico operates on Mana time tomorrow could mean anything from next week to never if you're waiting on a delivery a repair or really anything don't hold your breath in the words of blogger Adventure R Kate Mexico will lure you in with its color and warmth but staying comes at a cost so before you pack your bags ask yourself
is the risk worth the reward but what happens when you mix political oppression cultural isolation and economic struggles the next country on our list will show you number five bellus when I first landed in bellarus I thought this could be a fresh start the Charming architecture the calm streets it all seemed so promising but then reality hit and let me tell you it hit hard one of the biggest reasons expats regret moving here is the heavy blanket of political oppression that you feel everywhere it's like living in a place where big brother is always watching
and any hint of personal freedom feels like a distant memory if you come from a democratic country brace yourself because you're in for a shock the government keeps a tight grip on everything conversations about politics you won't hear them in public expressing dissent not a chance for many especially those from open societies this environment quickly becomes suffocating that's where the regret starts to creep in but that's just the beginning the sense of cultural isolation is something I didn't expect to feel so strongly as a Westerner you stick out and not in a good way I
tried to blend and went to local events and learned the language but it always felt like there was this invisible wall locals often seemed indifferent or downright suspicious it wasn't just about not speaking the language fluently it was about feeling like you didn't belong and let me tell you loneliness hits hard when you're in a place that doesn't want you there then there's the money the average salary here is around $500 a month Yes you heard that right 500 with rent and basic living expenses it's tough to make ends meet even if you manage to
find a job as a foreigner don't expect it to be a high-paying one plus the economy isn't exactly stable prices keep rising and the currency isn't the most reliable planning for the future here feels like trying to walk on quicksand you never know when things will sink and if that's not enough safety concerns Loom large the political instability feeds into a general sense of insecurity cyber fraud is rampant two cases skyrocketed from 10,000 in 2019 to over 25,000 the next year foreigners are often Prime targets which doesn't exactly help with feeling at ease number four
China when I first arrived in China I was excited a land of endless opportunities fueled by the country's booming economy but here's the thing the dream can look a little different when you're actually living it China's economy might still be massive but it's slowed down recently and that's when things get tricky jobs suddenly harder to find expats like me quickly realize that finding the perfect job or even an acceptable one might not be as easy as we thought on top of that government restrictions on foreign workers can make life a lot more complicated now let's
talk about language Mandarin is the key to survival here and if you're not fluent everyday tasks can feel like climbing a mountain ordering food challenging renting an apartment a nightmare socializing forget it it's all a bit overwhelming many expats think I'll learn as I go but the truth is Mandarin is not easy and if you don't speak it you're going to feel lost a lot I haven't even mentioned Healthcare yet it's a bit of a mixed bag sure in cities like Beijing or Shanghai the quality is better but try explaining your symptoms in a language
you barely know it's stressful and let's not forget the air pollution on some days you can't see the sky through the smog breathing in that much pollution takes a toll on your health I mean who would have thought a face mask would become part of my everyday wardrobe and oh the legal system China's rules are different from what many expats are used to there's a lack of transparency and if you get into trouble good luck navigating it I've heard horror stories from fellow expats who felt like they were on the wrong side of a system
they couldn't understand then comes the political environment you quickly realize that things like freedom of speech and privacy don't work the same way here certain websites are banned and there's an unsettling amount of surveillance imagine living under constant facial recognition or being judged by a social credit system for someone who values privacy this gets really uncomfortable really fast and as we approach the top three the next country might shock you especially if you thought the UK was an easy Choice number three United Kingdom like many expats I discovered that reality in the UK can feel
a bit more like a NeverEnding drizzle than a picture perfect postcard if you think your rent is high now now just wait until you look for a place in London the average house price in the capital is over $600,000 that's right double the national average renting a one-bedroom apartment in central London will set you back around $2,150 a month and this isn't a palace we're talking about it's enough to make your wallet cry and with that Financial pressure your dream life in London might feel more like a battle to stay afloat and then there's the
weather sure everyone knows it rains a lot in the UK but no one truly understands the constant drizzle until they've lived it picture this 133 rainy days a year that's almost half the year under gloomy skies and in the Lake District it rains even more the lack of sunshine doesn't just affect your tan it can dampen your spirits too some xats even develop Seasonal effective disorder from the never-ending cloud cover the National Health Service or NHS is often praised for being free at the point of use but many expats find the long weight times frustrating
patients can wait over 18 weeks just to see a specialist and the shortage of doctors and nurses makes things even worse the system is a bit like a free buffet you're thrilled it's there but when you finally get to the front of the line you might be too exhausted to enjoy it and the British while lovely are known for being reserved making friends here can feel like cracking a very polite tea drinking code don't even get me started on Small Talk there's a reason the weather is such a popular topic finally the immigration process is
a maze applying for a Visa involves a mountain of paperwork and it feels like just when you figured it out there's another hoop to jump through many expats say navigating UK immigration makes them feel like they're living in a never-ending game of bureaucratic whacka mole number two Canada Canada is a land of maple syrup kind neighbors and endless opportunity sounds dreamy right but the reality well let me tell you it's a different story and one that many exbats don't see coming until their knee deep in snow or debt take Toronto and Vancouver for example two
cities that are constantly topping best places to live lists but unless you've got a mountain of cash lying around good luck finding place to live a one-bedroom apartment in downtown Toronto can easily set you back nearly $2,000 a month then you add groceries which can run up to $375 monthly and don't forget utilities about $158 a month for a modest apartment pretty soon you'll start wondering if you should have stayed put and here's the kicker wages haven't kept up with the cost of living many immigrants arrive with dreams of Landing a a great job only
to find their professional qualifications aren't recognized I've met Engineers driving Ubers and doctors working retail all because their hard-earned degrees don't hold up in Canada it's like showing up to a party with the wrong invite awkward frustrating and just plain disappointing then just when you think you've budgeted for everything taxes sneak in and add about 15% to almost everything you buy and let's talk transportation if you think owning a car might make things easier think again car insurance can range from $1,300 to $1,800 annually but if you're a newcomer it can Skyrocket to $4,000 but
beyond the financial headaches there's the challenge of fitting in Canada may be welcoming but integrating isn't always easy many immigrants experience subtle discrimination or feel isolated in the workplace add the bone chilling Winters to the mix because yes it's cold and things start to feel even tougher and don't think starting fresh is as easy as hitting reset Canada doesn't recognize Foreign Credit histories so you're starting from scratch getting loans or even just a credit card can feel like an uphill battle many expats begin to wonder if Canada's dream life is more of a mirage the
question is are you ready to take on the challenge or will you be left with a case of expat regret and finally what about India the culture the chaos and the challenges are on a completely different level ready for the reality check number one India India seemed like the perfect place to dive into a new culture but soon I found out that life is an expat there wasn't as picture perfect as I imagined let me paint the scene for you picture bustling streets filled with the constant honking of cars motorcycles and Rick Shaws add in
some overflowing trash bins and you've got a daily soundtrack that's hard to ignore traffic don't even get me started getting across town in a reasonable time feels like winning the lottery rare and almost impossible it's not just about the noise it's the sheer chaos that comes with it navigating the streets as a pedestrian can feel like you're dodging a never- ending obstacle course then there's the pollution you know those smoggy days where you think this can't be healthy well in cities like Delhi that's almost every day breathing fresh air becomes a luxury and I found
myself reminiscing about the crisp clean air of home more often than not healthcare too is a mixed bag sure India has some world-class private hospitals but they come with worldclass price tags the public healthc care system well good luck with that it's overcrowded and underfunded meaning you'll likely be stuck in a long line before seeing a doctor it's one of those situations where you have to weigh the cost of your well-being literally and if you're a woman The Experience can be even more challenging safety concerns are real from Petty crimes to harassment and it's hard
to feel entirely at ease especially at night it's not that danger is around every corner but the constant awareness can make daily life exhausting now let's talk about the cultural differences the hustle of life in India is intense social norms are different communication Styles can leave you confused and even simple tasks like buying groceries turn into an adventure not always the fun kind markets are crowded haggling is expected and sometimes you just wish things were a little more dot dot dot organized I'm not the only one who's noticed travel blogger Drew binsky once said India
isn't for everyone it's amazing but it's also one of the most challenging places I've been and he's right India has a way of overwhelming you with beauty and Chaos all at once so before you pack your bags for this vibrant challenging country ask yourself can you handle the noise the traffic the pollution and the unpredictability if not you might find yourself longing for the quieter simpler life you left behind if you found today's video interesting don't hesitate to hit the like button and subscribe to the Discover Globe Channel your support is very important to us
