last year Media made a bunch of changes to their algorithm pce structure and requirements for monetization making the process of getting started a little confusing now that the dust is settled I wanted to make another video outlining exactly how to get started writing on medium in 2024 and most importantly start earning money let's get into it so if you're brand new to the idea of medium here's a quick breakdown of why it's one of the most popular writing platforms out there essentially medium is like YouTube for writers you sign up start writing and get paid
based on the views and read time of readers on medium although unlike YouTube there are no specific requirements you have to reach to join the medium partner program and start earning from your articles you do though need to be a paid medium member so what I'm going to focus on in this video is first the specific steps to set up your profile and earn back your initial monthly investment and then how to scale those earnings to earning $100 per month 1,000 and turn medium into a profitable side Hustle or full-time job I've been writing on
medium since 2019 and have successfully navigated all sorts of changes so if I were to start a new medium account in 2024 here's exactly what I would do so I have my account here Jim newbie you can see here zero followers and the first thing I would do is apply to the partner program to start earning from the partner program you do need to be a paid member and you have to have published at least one article I always recommend starting off with what's called an about me story it's quick relatable and will help introduce
yourself to the readers on medium and start building an audience go to the search bar here and type in about me stories tab over to Publications and you're going to click on the first publication at the top here called about me stories follow them as that is one of the requirements to submit a story and then you're going to click on submit on the left here there's a story called start here you're going to click there and read the requirements to apply to become a writer on medium you have two ways to publish you can
either publish straight to your own profile simply by writing a story in the story composer and Publishing it this will be broadcast to anyone who is following you or the topics that you tag the story in or you can submit to a publication where your story has to be approved by the Publications editors and when is published it will be broadcast to those who follow you as well as all of the followers of the publication now this is just my recommendation you can skip the step all together and simply click right and publish your first
story here this is my recommendation because applying to Publications is a great way to get more exposure on your stories and start to build your initial audience for more information on submitting to Publications I will link a video in the description below where I go more in depth into it but for now I want to just give you the basic steps as it can be a lot to take in when you're just starting out and I don't want to overwhelm you so after you have published your first story you can apply to the median partner
program and then at that point I would wait for them to approve your application this is because you will only start earning money from views that come after you have been approved for monetization they generally get back to writers very fast often the same day the same week at the very latest 5 to seven business days during that time I would continue to write but wait until you've been approved to publish your next story in the meantime you can expand the Publications you are a writer for and start to understand the types of articles that
will actually perform well on medium in my experience the most successful stories on medium all hinge on three Core Concepts the most successful articles all combine this information with personal experience medium has made it very clear that they want to steer away from the use of AI instead they will want to be a voice for personal stories and nurture authentic human storytelling so the stories that perform the best on medium come from a place of personal experience and I found the two Master headlines that almost all popular articles are built upon is I tried this
this is what happened or here's what this taught me about this mediums out algorithm will naturally promote stories that involve personal storytelling and although you always want to speak to your reader and talk about how you can provide value to their lives the stories that perform the best and that will earn you the most money on medium start with your own personal experience if you're a numbers person I have a post on my hubstack page that breaks down the demographics interests and reader behavior of the readers on medium I will add in the description below
it's also a great resource if you're looking to expand your income writing online but with all that said even if you write the best story ever written it won't do you any good if no one sees it so this next step will help you build your initial audience and start creating momentum which will eventually roll into your bank account and that is to apply to a publication called illumination I love this publication for beginners because they will like accept all writers at any level and they publish stories on any topic how you can do that
is by searching for Illumination in the search bar clicking again on Publications and clicking this top one here click on inquiries which will take you to the page to apply and become a writer after you have been approved they will send you an email with the next steps and then when you go to your story composer to publish your story you will see illumin as well as a list of sibling Publications which you can submit your stories to and increase your reach all stories are medium earn money based on a domino like effect starting with
a view which turns into a read a high read time which will then Garner engagement from readers and will create that toppling effect cascading around the homepages and inboxes of more and more readers on medium earning you more and more money so I won't go too into detail into exactly how how to maximize your earnings in this video because I want to keep it succinct and because I have another video where I outline all the metrics and strategies I use to maximize the income of each of my articles which again I will link in the
description below but just to give you an idea the most important aspects of your article should come in what I call a top down approach because you can't have a long read time without first having a read and you don't get a read without first getting a view you the smartest way to prioritize your energy when writing articles is that of the Journey of the reader so starting with the headline the introduction and then the body when somebody clicks on your article that then counts as a view once they have read the story for 30
seconds that counts as a read and if they continue to read your story that read time determines how much you get paid the level of Engagement that is claps highlights comments and follows will all contribute to telling medium's algorithm that this story is worth reading people like it and it will push that story out to more readers if this continues to happen that essentially is the nuts and bolts of going viral all of this stands on what I believe is the most important habit on medium and that is a foundation of mutual engagement so in
a perfect world we would all post our stories people would read them they would love them we get paid lots and lots of money we wouldn't have to work jobs we don't enjoy and we can just stay at home all day write stories and get paid for it and although this is achievable chances are if you are signing up for medium for the first time you're either a new or developing writer so in order to get to that point where you can just focus on writing and getting paid from your stories you will need to
build an audience and for most people that audience is built on what I call Mutual engagement and what that means is you want to have a group of anywhere from 5 to 20 writers who engage with all of your stories helping to give them an initial push to medium's algorithm and help that story be presented to more readers there are Facebook groups you can join that promise this engagement and some writers have organized courses or cohorts where they provide this as well for a fee but in my experience having try these methods they don't work
and that's because they are based on a selfish desire to promote one's own stories as opposed to a shared interest I found this method that I will outline now to be the most effective and it doesn't cost you anything other than time so what I currently do and what I have been doing for years is every time I post a new story I go back to my old story and I respond to all the comments I go to the profile of everyone who left a comment and I read one of their stories I genuinely engage
with it meaning I clap for it highlight a section that stood out to me and leave a thoughtful comment what you'll find if you do this is you'll see the same people coming back to your stories because they too are writers wanting engagement on their stories and they enjoy your writing enough to do the same for you and it's mutually beneficial not only for helping to ramp up the early engagement on your stories but also to expose yourself to new forms of writing ideas and perspectives now if you're just starting out and you haven't written
any stories you don't have any comments to go back and respond to so what I would recommend to do is find stories you're genuinely interested in that have been posted within the last 90 days and leave a thoughtful comment on the story I don't mean saying follow me back or I would like you to comment on my story as most people are more inclined to do things when they feel like they are doing it on their own free will as opposed to being forced or asked to and if you do this enough maybe aim for
5 to 20 per day eventually you'll find people reciprocating this engagement and over time you'll build a community of writers who mutually engage on all of your stories starting out I would aim for a basis of five writers who come up on all of your stories and over time scale it up to 20 personally I post a medium once per week and I have Capp the amount of comments I respond to to 20 because I'm also writing and creating content on multiple platforms and will get burnt out if I respond to too many comments in
my experience this is the most powerful habit for growing and earning money on medium and I liken it to mining for gold just like everything on medium I recommend focusing on quality over quantity and if you leave genuine comments on enough stories over time you'll find people who genuinely want to engage with your stories as well and aren't just doing so to build their own engagement this handful of steps is literally the basis of everything you need to grow and earn money on medium I would recommend to post at least once per week focusing on
