Lester Holt it is great to be with you Happy New Year to you all we have a terrific lineup ahead including this penguin and a baby mandrel who were both Turning Heads plus we'll put you to the test in this week's Pop Quiz but we're going to kick things off with our good friend Dr Sue Vara who was here with some important tips on how to make and keep the important part keep a New Year's resolution a New Year's resolution is when we make up our mind to do something and we say that we are
determined and we are committed to doing it it could be something new it can be something we want to change about ourselves um but the idea is that we are committed to it for me I always love to make mental health a priority so that is one of my New Year's resolutions and there's so many ways to keep healthy when it comes to your mind and your body three big tips are one learn spend time even 15 minutes a day learning something new it could be something that is interesting to you it could be a
skill it could be a hobby it doesn't have to amount in a good grade or somebody giving you a pat on the back it's about you wanting to learn and challenge yourself the second one is grow grow in your emotions whether it be awareness of what you're feeling sometimes in your body if you're not feeling good it might feel like a headache or it might feel like a stomach ache but connect to your emotions both the negative ones and also the positive ones when we connect to our positive emotions we find that we're more likely
to have positive things happen to us and having a practice of gratitude which is finding something positive to be thankful for can be really beneficial and the last one is give yourself Grace give yourself a break we have all been through so much you are strong healthy capable remind yourself of that and one way to show appreciation to experience positive emotions and to have growth is by giving back and we can give back in a variety of ways whether it might be giving back in the form of volunteering whether it might be s checking in
with somebody how are you goes a long way happy New Year and I'm with you doing the New Year's resolutions right alongside Dr Sue varmer great advice thanks very much okay time now for our Pop Quiz the subject this week is the US government both the Senate and the House of Representatives will convene on January 3rd when the new Congress is sworn in so the question this week how many senators are elected from each state is it a 2 B 4 or c 1 I'll give you a few seconds to think about it okay time's
up the answer is a two the US Senate is composed of 100 Senators two for each state each Senator is elected to serve for a term of 6 years now let's head to Massachusetts where a group of firefighters have a unique way of teaching teaching kids about fire prevention we get details from our friend Malcolm Johnson compies send about 7111 you are looking at the very first all Latino firefighter crew in Lawrence and they do more than fight fires they teach children how to prevent them as a group called Station 8 answer the and their
viral videos have millions of of views online children need to be engaged these days you know especially with with kids coming out of the womb with an iPad before the [Music] video the songs were meant to help Osio Rodriguez's newborn son fall asleep and songs that are going to come out in the future are songs that were written as like lullab so they sung like they fight fires as a group they like quickly stepped into action and that's like where the wheels like really started turning first they come up with the songs Iggy's the music
guy and he makes up the Melodies and I help him out with it and then we start you know making the lyrics to the songs what's Jean going to put on next then they come up with the lesson we start thinking about like what do we want the kids to take out of this video between the Charities and classroom visits it's the community Connections in Lawrence that mean the most makes my bigger to be honest um and uh it's just it's it's Priceless I guess is the way the best way I could put it it's
Priceless just seeing the reaction the community and watching these kids reacting to the videos and like that's probably like just the connection that's probably the best part all right Malcolm thanks so much okay time now for our picture of the week Wellington the rock hopper penguin a frequent guest on this program just celebrated his 37th hatch date Wellington became a big hit a few years ago when videos of him and other Penguins taking field trips went viral the penguins at the Shed Aquarium in Chicago regularly visit different spots around the aquarium as part of the
overall plan for the well-being of the animals the shed says the trips encourage physical exercise and mental stimulation and now Wellington returned to explore the expanded habitats and new spaces Wellington is one of shed aquarium's longest living Penguins we got to love those videos don't we now let's head to Texas to learn more about Jasper Jasper is a rare baby mandrel born recently at the Fort Worth Zoo we get details from our friend an Thompson in September the Fort Worth Zoo welcomed a baby mandrel named Jasper the second born this year after his big sister
Ruby bigger sister is doing a phenomenal job and being protective over Mama scarlet and also Jasper so it's actually really cute to watch kind of how they're already integrating but not only that but also he is independent they're one big happy family you'll see JJ dad being a little more involved with Ruby so then that way Scarlet can spend a little more time hanging out with youo Jasper it's really awesome to see our little family become bigger but also flourish Jasper is already making his presence known Ruby at this age was still a little closer
to Mom and Jasper is full Spirits he is running he's exploring he is rooting around he's um just all over the place he's just super curious about everything he's got something to do all the time he's always looking through hey he's they they're you know start starting to groom one another he's got so many things to to do that he's just a busy bee he'll kind of venture away Venture away and then figure out after like a couple minutes he's like wait where's mom and then he starts to yell and then he goes tries to
find Mom or what's really cute is that Scarlet um she'll kind of like look over and see where he's at and then Ruby comes in is like hello brother I can go ahead and help you out but he'll need to stick with Mom for the time being he's the Spitfire he likes to test boundaries he um but also likes to stay close he's not necessarily having his own diet but he is starting to mouth some of the things and he might steal a bite here or there but he is still predominantly nursing off of scarlet
Jasper was named after the red gemstone we actually wanted to kind of pay homage to Scarlet Ruby being red but also having the letter J for JJ and so it's actually a gem that's red so we thought how fitting is that that we can kind of pay an homage to keeping the red gemstone but then also paying homage to Dad JJ scarlet and Dad JJ are the perfect mandrel match so JJ came to us um and we had another female that we still have and um they were slated to potentially breed if they were a
a good pair after a couple days they were just like you know what we're going to just hang out we're going to be friends and then a couple years later we got scarlet and it was like love it first sight and so I think that was kind of special they're a phenomenal pair their great parents and so seeing that um has been kind of just really wonderful to just watch did you know male and female mandrels have different coloring so it's the males that have the more colorful face Jasper is actually going to be a
little more colorful and he'll start forming those different colors in a couple months he won't get the full color like his dad JJ until they're about five or six mandrels are listed as vulnerable making Jasper and Ruby's births even more significant they do face a pretty high risk of being extinct basically why their population numbers are falling is because habitat loss and also poaching in the wild they're found in just a few countries in West Central Africa there's not many in our Zoo industry and so this is huge for this particular species and you know
having two back to back means that they can grow up with each other an exciting moment for the zoo marking an important milestone for the mandrills and thanks so much finally what's old is new again before there were smartphones some people maybe even your parents maybe even me use disposable cameras to take candid photos and now disposable cameras are making a comeback let's get more from our friend Gotti Schwarz from Snoop Dog at the Olympics to Hope walls at the Democratic National Convention suddenly those old disposable cameras that your parents used growing up are making
a big comeback one two three for photographers and Friends Allison Blackman and Asia vres that was a good one it's all about that vintage look and a slower more intentional experience why a disposable camera I think just the easiness of it it's cool because it's you don't know what you're seeing and what you're going to get do you carry disposable cameras with you yes I always have one on Deck do you have one right now wow we set out to shoot a few rolls two one nice at one of the most photographed places in La
let's hope it's in frame I like it just because it keeps me very present and compared to the smartphone cameras we were all carrying in our pockets all right so we' got a pH it's 10 times better it's 10 times better I'll promise you you could unlimited pictures the quality is better it's a Vibe it's a VI according to Kodak moments it's more than just Vibes sales of the company's single use cameras have doubled over the last 5 years driven largely by Millennials and gen Z it's social media they're seeing it on Tik Tok they're
seeing it on Instagram Phil stey owns a dark room in San Clemente California before digital cameras came along everyone used to send their film to Labs like this to develop their photos these technicians process and recycle two to 300 disposable cameras every single day young people now enjoy it a lot they didn't grow up with physical prints where old people like me that's how we saw our photos that and then there's the weight go ahead take a picture which is probably quite a bit longer than most kids are used to they're explaining there no you
can't see it there's nothing in the back back at the lab each photo that's printed becomes a time capsule into the past it's the beauty of it it's kind of like Christmas morning opening up your photos and seeing and remembering all those little moments Gotti thanks than very much well that is going to do it for us parents just a reminder if your child has a question about any Topic in the news email a video to us at nightly neww kids nbcuni.com you can also follow us on Instagram at nightly kids thanks for watching Everybody
