this is the last video on our strata and it is all about his prime mover our Stossel claimed that if everything has a final cause of purpose this would lead to an infinite regression of final causes meaning a chain of course as it goes on and on without end for example walking being for the sake of health list for the sake of happiness happiness for the sake of something else and so on one thing always for the sake of another however Aristotle argued that the final causes cannot go on forever or cannot go on ad
infinitum otherwise you would be left with an infinite series of final reasons with no reason for the series itself and this would beg the question well why is there a series at all Aristotle argued that the series could not have come from nothing rather the series must start with something since nothing can come from nothing therefore there must be an ultimate final cause of the whole series of final courses in other words a final course before everything the whole universe but this final course unlike all the other courses must be itself uncaused Aristotle called this
uncaused final causer of everything the first course the first mover or the prime mover he surmised that if there is no first course then there is no course at all our saws have concluded that the prime mover must be uncaused or onion in order to resolve this series of causes such that it does not go on forever with no ultimate reason for being there must be a mover which amused them without being moved if it was able to move from potential existence to actual existence it would be dependent on something else to bring it into
being and would be capable of ceasing to be Aristotle said if something is moved it is capable of being otherwise than it is the prime mover must therefore be purely active it can't possess any potential since it can't move it is immutable unchangeable meaning it's free from change it must be perfect and remain so not subject to corruption or to improvement because these are both kinds of change getting worse or getting better the prime mover is transcendent the prime mover must be able to new things without moving or changing self which moves while itself unmoved
our subtle argued that it uniquely produces motion or moves other things by being loved this is unlike all other things which are contingent and changeable it drools or attracts things to itself through its perfection the prime mover is impersonal and transcendent as it does not act in the world in other words it is not imminent having no course of its own and being unable to come from nothing is previously argued the prime mover must have an eternal existence it must have always existed and always continue to exist stronger still Aristotle argued that its existence must
be necessary in other words it must exist it cannot not exist this is because it cannot be dependent on anything else for its existence it has no contingency Aristotle said it exists therefore of necessity as it can in no way be otherwise than it is and lastly Aristotle concluded that the prime mover must be pure thought a comple matter because matter is changeable can be broken apart and rearranged sir Aristotle said it must be of itself that the divine thought thinks since it is the most excellent of things so not only is it thought that
it also only thinks about pure thought in other words any things on itself since thought is pure and more perfect for matter its thinking is a thinking on thinking this video has been brought to you by jest education thank you for watching and please subscribe to find out more
