People think they can't get this because once you put a title on somebody, it becomes unreachable for everybody else because I'm Superman. This book lets you know that I'm the furthest thing from Superman. And that's why I did it.
It's it is a very raw real version of the hell I went through growing up as a kid and all the pitfalls. And so this isn't like a story that you know you have that all those stories you have this thing you get on this one hurdle and then you're successful. No.
Break down. Break down some more. Suffer.
Suffer. Suffer. Suffer.
Oh, I made it. [ __ ] suffer some more. Suffer some more.
Suffer some more. Junior high school. I couldn't read.
If you live that life, >> it feels good for people to Oh, man. You know, that's just David, man. He's just not real smart.
And he had a bad life. And you get a get out of jail free card. That's nice.
It sucks doing what I had to do to get here today. That was not [ __ ] fun. That darkness is there's there's nothing that dark to drive me the places I had to go to become successful.
On the flip side of that, if you come from a silver spoon family, you have to realize that. You have to realize, [ __ ] there's people out there like David Gogggins who had nothing. [ __ ] nothing.
And I've had all this opportunity in front of me and I'm a loser. I'm not [ __ ] So, what does that say about me? The conversations are very similar.
You have all this opportunity and you've gone nowhere with it. I'm at the bottom of the barrel and it could take me a lot longer just to get where you're at for the for the starting line to be fair. So, yeah, it's just how you look at life.
>> When you get in a horrible situation in life, your mind immediately says, "Get the [ __ ] out of here. " Everybody's does, even if you want to be there. Mhm.
>> But it starts to have all these different questions in your mind in that one second. >> And it says, "Okay, why are you here? Why you doing this?
Why this? Why that? " >> And then you start to say to yourself, >> if you don't want to be there that bad, I have a beautiful wife at home, man.
Why the [ __ ] am I doing this, man? Like this is stupid. This is going to get these guys injured for like like they're going to pay for this for the rest of their lives.
I'm not going to break my body up to do this. >> Your mind starts to say, "Yeah, this is stupid. " >> Mhm.
But if you have if you are already knowing that this is going to happen to you, you have all the answers to these questions that your mind starts to give you when you're in suffer mode. I have a mind that's very different than most people. And I have about what I'm saying is oh my god, David say like four personalities.
I'm able to realize I'm going to be out here for [ __ ] 70 hours. I'm able to go to a place that's so [ __ ] gone. I become a robot.
An actual robot. Seriously. I know.
I was like, "You're [ __ ] nuts. " No, I become a robot. I don't think.
I don't [ __ ] nothing. I just move. I let I let time go.
I sat back and I was like, "My god, I I'm I'm able to visualize years beyond where I'm at right now. How are you going to feel if you can pull this off? When I got them the the idea to become a Navy Seal, 300 lb, hate the water, can't run down the [ __ ] block.
Horrible. And I put everything on that. My whole life was I'm going to be a Navy Seal come hell or high water.
Who does that? Put no money in the [ __ ] It's just grit, hard work, and the Sergeant Jack disciple of discipline [ __ ] that got me there. So all these [ __ ] who think they may be stupid, who think they may not be able to get it done, I got something to tell you.
You can compete with the top minds in the world if you're willing to armor and callous your [ __ ] mind and outwork them [ __ ] and dig deep. When most people see four walls, I see a massive empty space that deserves all kind of creativity to make it look beautiful. When I grew up, it was just suck it up.
Yeah, >> it just make it happen. >> Yeah, >> you had to figure out it's it was called figure it out, man. And all these all these [music] nuggets that I gained along the way.
That's what it was about. It was about the trident. It about all those deon medals.
It was about any of that. And that's why I hate even talking about being a seal. You know, I mention stories, why you talk about it didn't define me.
The journey getting there was harder than going through it. >> Yeah. You know, so that's the whole thing about life, man.
It's it's that journey that that makes you who you are. >> Yeah. >> So the 40% rule is like we have a like a car.
Some cars have a governor on it. >> And when you get to like 92 mph, that car start doing this cuz it can't go any faster. >> Those cars that don't have governors on like a like a fast ass whatever Porsche, whatever, that [ __ ] bury it gone.
We have that ability in this. We have put this governor on our minds and you have to the factory that put the governor on that car. The factory is now you that put that [ __ ] on your [ __ ] mind.
You got to take that [ __ ] off. >> Until you take it off, you're going to constantly get to 92 miles an hour and do this. >> Yeah.
>> Cuz you ain't going no faster. >> Yeah. >> And m fact, you might even go slower.
>> So basically, I started realizing this through my life through going through all these times. You have to live and win what you can and build the body armor. Start callousing the mind so you're ready for combat outside of your house cuz that's going to come.
And that's what I realized at a young age. I had no body armor. I had no >> callous.
>> So when life came at me, I I ran. I tucked. I lived in the fetal position trying to get away from life.
I wasn't protected. I didn't protect myself. I have nothing.
So I start realizing I got a form of armor to so I won't have to lie to you to make you like me. >> So I'm not approaching people feeling insecure. Saying I have all these material things that I don't have.
When you have that body armor, you tell people, "Hey man, I'm not real smart, but I try real hard. " >> Mhm. >> I'm not the f I won't win this race, man, but I've been running for the last four years every day.
>> That's pretty. Yeah. That's the That's the mentality that you need to have.
How do you have that? I have [clears throat] people who are not waking up till 3 4:00 in the afternoon, going to bed late, eating shitty foods, had no desires, had no goals, had nothing. And I sat there for too many years.
And I got involved with people like that. I had relationships with people like that. And what happens is that becomes who you are.
So, my biggest regret is not building myself fast enough to not go through the beginning of my life in the dungeon. It took too long to come out of the dungeon. Almost too long to where there would have never been a David Gogggins.
There is a time limit on everything, my friend. Everything has a [ __ ] expiration date. There is no tomorrow.
Some of us get granted a tomorrow, but there really is not one. I was lucky. And you never want to bring luck into your [ __ ] life.
So the most important conversation you'll ever have is the one you have with yourself. >> Mhm. >> You wake up with it.
You walk around with it. Eventually you'll act on it. >> Mhm.
>> And my selft talk was the most disgusting selft talk of all time. M. >> So the sewer of my mind, like I said, you have to go back in there and fix things.
A lot of us are afraid. Like right now, [music] 20 years ago, you wouldn't find me on this show. I was too embarrassed to tell you I stuttered.
>> I lied. >> All these different things, getting beat up, getting bullied, whatever happened. But that's where the true transformation starts to happen.
When you can look at people, anybody, thousands of people, one person and say, "Hey, this is who I am, and this is [music] where I have to fix myself. " And this is where it really happened. I thought it happened when I was in, you know, 19, 18 years old trying to pass this military test.
>> It happened here when I was almost 300 lb, spraying for cockroaches, >> making $1,000 a month. >> And, you know, people call me dumb. people.
My dad called me so many things and not even funny. Being beat just stripped me of all self-esteem. [music] This is when I realized I was alone on this earth.
I have God alone on this earth and I have to fix everything. So this is where I started to develop an indestructible [music] mental toolbox. And when I realized I had to keep that visual, that picture in my head for 17 hours.
It [music] took me 17 hours to break that record. So for 17 hours while I used to be loud everywhere I went, I put these headphones in and I never listen to music, but I listened to one song going the distance, you know, for 17 hours. It's 2 minutes and 13 seconds for 17 hours.
I had that in. >> That's a lot of Rocky. >> A lot of Rocky.
And I just went here for And so I was able to visualize every rep. So, I visualized my hand placement, making sure that felt right before I got going. I didn't ignore all the little pains.
My hands got sweaty. Okay, that means I was aware of everything. That means my Okay, my hands about to rip.
It's getting sweaty. Wipe it off. Be aware everything.
I was totally in the moment because of how I visualized everything. They want to put you in a box. They want to put a title on you.
No, you're putting a title on me to make yourself feel better about yourself. If you read this book of mine and you see where I came from, this person was this this person was not built. This this this person was not made by God.
>> This person, sorry, this person was built. I made this person. I made this person by diving into the insecurities that life gave me.
Cuz now they're yours. They're yours to own. If you're not smart, call yourself dumb.
It's okay because you are. But take that knowledge. You're putting yourself down.
If you're fat, call yourself fat. I used to be 300 lb. >> We We want to talk so soft to ourselves.
We're looking for that recovery day. And that recovery day is everything in your life. Everything in your life is a recovery day.
We're looking for it. It's not coming. It's not coming.
>> Get over there. >> And that's what life is about. Sometimes you are raised in a position where you are behind.
We have to make that time up. I'm sorry. It may be inhumane.
You may be unbalanced. It may not look right to you. I don't give a [ __ ] It's the situation that wife put me in.
And I need people to say when I don't want to get up at 3 in the morning, I need a [ __ ] in my life that sees me go to bed at 12 and wakes me up at 3 saying, "You need to get this [ __ ] done. " That's the foxhole. I don't need critiquing.
I need pushing. I need pulling. I need anger.
I need passion. I need drive. I need them [ __ ] man.
Those bad days. I don't need somebody in my ear saying sh man because then that's all a person needs is that support can go a lot of ways man it can go a lot of ways I support you in everything you do and I support you in everything you don't do I don't want the support in everything you don't do I need to support always the things that you do do >> what changed me was I had to be hard on myself >> y >> and I have to continue to grind myself into a fine dust. Yeah.
>> Period. That's where I feel good. I feel like I accomplished something.
If things come easy, it's not fun. I must fail at [music] something repeatedly. It has to haunt me.
And then once I complete it, I feel like I accomplished something here. I don't want to set out and say, "Oh, there's an A. We're good.
" It's [ __ ] stupid. No. I want to turn in a million times and say, "You failed.
You failed. " I said, "Okay, Roger that. " And sit there and analyze [music] what I'm doing wrong.
Go to these places that people don't go to anymore cuz all this [ __ ] social media [ __ ] and everything's [music] computerized. >> I want to go to that dark place in my mind, okay, how are we going to get this done? What haunts me the most is that if I would have died at 300 lb, let's say I was 75 years old, I got to heaven and God has a chart like that on everybody's life.
God knows all. Let's say that. I don't care what you believe in.
Doesn't matter. I'm not judging anybody. But let's say my thing is God.
You get to heaven. I'm 300 lb. I sit down.
I was a cockroach terminator my whole life. And we're sitting down just like this. You're God and I'm David.
And he gives me that chart and he says, "Look at this. " And I'm looking at this chart. And on the chart, it has all these different things, but my name's on it.
But these things aren't me. I was going to change the world. I was going to I was going to set records.
I was going to be a Navy Seal. I was going to be >> all these things in the military that I accomplished. You're going to get the VFW award.
You could be honored here, honored there. And I'm like, God, I was This isn't me. Like, it says David Gogggins.
I was an ecoab guy. I pray for cockroaches and I'm 300 lb. It says here I'm 185.
It says here I got a a bachelor's in the masters. It says all these things. And God goes, "No, that's who you were supposed to be.
" >> Wow. >> Most of my true ability comes from the discipline of mind. And that's where my motivation was is that most people put me in a category.
They didn't know the side of me that can write deep, thoughtful books and give people things that can make you cry, make you happy, make you sad. I can bring you through an emotion. I can give you 10 YEARS OF LIFE WITHIN THREE PAGES.
For me, I grew up and I thought I was real stupid. I thought I was dumb, you know? I thought I couldn't read and write all these different things, man.
So, the motivation for me now is that while I do run a lot and I do do a lot of working out, that's where I go to school. That's my school, man. That's where I learn.
That's where the deepness of my thought comes from. That's where the philosophical side of me comes from. That's where all my parables come from.
