[Music] who doesn't love food come on you know it's it's the spice of life food is healing for your soul 100% Tom Low knows a thing or two about food and healing I've always dreamed about being a doctor I've always dream about being a chef why not do both an anesthesiologist by day Chef By Night growing up he loved cooking even gaining experience in a bakery before heading to Yale University ultimate he felt he had to choose one path I told my parents I'm going to defer med school to go to cooking school and they
they said I was so excited they not so much but they knew I had this passion for cooking so after you say I want to do this what happens I moved to New York to go to the French coloring Institute and I just discovered this entire world of Cuisine Tom loved cooking but was unsure of the stability of the restaurant business so he worked in finance and was in the World Trade Center on September 11th 2001 I was on the 73rd floor and it was actually my 23rd birthday I just heard this huge Boom the
North Tower got hit I was in the South Tower and I started walking down and a few moments later that's when um we got hit and literally uh the my tower started to sway back and forth for about 2 seconds I thought if we go down which I thought we were I'm not going to survive this I got to get out of here so that's when I walked down my mom said I had 23 Angels escorting me down the stairwell and that that day wasn't uh wasn't my time so I I'm grateful for that how
did that experience change you when you have a confrontation with mortality like that and you survive that untouched um gives you a different perspective on life I try to make every moment count it would seem to me that one of the things the outgrow of experiencing something like that is you you can have more in one dream 100% that was probably the start of a moment when I started kind of realizing I need to go back into medicine Tom went back to school eventually becoming an anesthesiologist along the way always reminding himself that food was
his medicine so Tom continued working in different kitchens until he finally opened his own restaurant in 2022 chi in New York City running the business while attending the to patients what's your goal as a doctor and a chef what I would love to do is actually bring the service side that I've you know learned from Hospitality into medicine in terms of food I would say many people in America what they think of when they when you say Chinese food is beef and broccoli Wan soup General General Chicken yes which is great which I love but
there's so much more to Chinese food than just that and I would love to bring that more to the mainstream whether in the kitchen or in the operating room Chef Dr low gives each practice his all both of those take a lot of effort concentration how do you do it it's a balance time management but also in this life there's there's so many things I love to do love to practice medicine I love food I love cooking there's no reason not to do them seems like you're living the dreams I'm trying now I'm trying I
just adore this guy and his wife they they're just a terrific family uh while I was there uh Chef Dr low showed me how to make the the signature cucumber salad uh and it it's Simplicity unto itself it really is we'll put this on our website is amazing and he he ended up getting into business and starting shoe with another Chef all because of this cucumber this cucumber got a nice SP I don't like cucumbers Nei you know and this is fantastic so was it easy to make pretty easy to make pretty simple yeah this
