pasquino good morning i hope everyone is doing well this morning it is truly a joy to be with you this is my third visit to brazil the second time for this conference and i often tell people that it can be easy to get discouraged as you look at the broad visible spectrum of professing christianity today christianism there is so much heresy there's so much dilution of the gospel and there's so many moral failings among among pastors or contemplating but one of the true joys that has been mine as an evangelist one of the true joys that has been mine as an evangelist is that by god's grace i've been able to preach all around the world could you repeat that i asked them to raise the okay by god's grace i've been able to preach all around the world and i can tell you that there are many many good churches out there god has his sheep all around the world and it does not matter where in the world i am important it doesn't matter what culture i'm in or what language is spoken it does not matter how much melanin we have in our skin [Music] when i am with like-minded believers in christ there's an instant bond there an instant and so it's my joy to be here with you this morning as eros has described to you we're having a number of technological difficulties technologically and so this may be a little disjointed but we will do our best in this session and my session on sunday morning i will be teaching about the roman catholic church and let me say that i know that many of you probably have friends or family members who are still in the roman catholic church family and it is not my intent at all to offend anyone simply for the sake of being offensive but the roman catholic church and its doctrines constitutes a different gospel is the roman catholic church is the largest organized theological cult in the world 26 of the 27 books in the new testament directly warn about false doctrine and or false teachers vince says only the book of philemon has nothing to say about false doctrine or false teachers at least not directly so warning about false doctrine and false teachers is a command from scripture the most loving thing that we can do for people is to tell them the truth okay the most hateful thing we could do is see someone in spiritual danger and say nothing about it if we love people we should love them enough to tell them the truth is so as we begin i want to just lay a little bit of doctrinal groundwork okay by talking about the importance of doctrine and theology first timothy 4 13 through 16. uh paul writes until i come give attention to the public reading of scripture okay go ahead read the whole thing to exhortation and teaching do not neglect the spiritual gift within you which was bestowed on you through the prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery take pains with these things be absorbed in them so that your progress will be evident to all pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching persevere in these things for as you do you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you paul says to give attention to the public reading of scripture the public reading of scripture was a central part of synagogue worship uh jesus did this in luke chapter 4 when he read from isaiah 61. the early church did this and added to it apostolic teaching when paul says exhortation he is saying that we are to obey what is taught not merely to be hearers of the word but doers also as james says in chapter 1 the only objective measure that we have of our love for god is our obedience to god and then paul says be absorbed in the reading of scripture to exhortation and to teaching to doctrine be absorbed in them the study of god's word should be the air we breathe and the more we have a right understanding of of doctrine and theology the more fruit that our lives will bear also paul says pay close attention to yourself and to your doctrine paul is saying that we must pay attention to our own personal lives and our holiness before god paul personal holiness and sanctification is an area that is tragically very weak amongst many reformed christians and i believe that uh josh bice will be speaking on this in his message george vice versa there is a lack of personal sanctification in many of our circles so pay a close attention to your life into your teaching to your doctrine the stakes are very high it is only sound doctrine and right theology that can ensure the salvation of ourselves and those who hear us psalm 144 verse 2 says the lord is my deliverer is jesus romans 6 17 through 18 speaks of being obedient to doctrine and being freed being delivered from sin homanus says liberty sound doctrine delivers but false doctrine destroys it is tragic that for the vast majority of professing christians today they have separated love of god love for god and knowledge of god [Music] for many professing christians the terms doctrine and theology have almost become bad words but the bible never separates knowledge of god and love for god paul says in philippians chapter one verse nine apologizing and this i pray that your love would abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment more divorces so so many people today say well i don't need doctrine and i don't need theology it always combines them in all of these people who profess how much they love jesus but they couldn't they couldn't tell you the difference between romans in revelation then i would submit to you they do not love jesus nearly as much as they profess to love him i want to make a statement of absolute truth here a person can have sound doctrine and live an ungodly life there are many people who have sound doctrine head knowledge of god's word especially so you can have sound doctrine and live an ungodly life but it is not possible to live a godly life without sound doctrine let's look at second timothy 2 14-18.
paul writes remind them of these things and solemnly charge them in the presence of god not to wrangle about words which is useless and leads to the ruin of hearers be diligent to present yourself approved to god as a workman who does not need to be ashamed accurately handling the word of truth but avoid worldly and empty chatter for it will lead to further ungodliness and their talk will spread like gangrene among them are hymenaeus and philetus men who have gone astray from the truth saying that the resurrection has already taken place and they upset the faith of some ah in this text paul talks about the deadly dangers of unsound doctrine numero testo paulo falados in verse 14 he says it will lead to the ruin of hearers [Music] this word ruin is the same word used to describe what happened to sodom and gomorrah uh yes it leads to the ruin of unbelievers by presenting them a false gospel a false jesus in a false gospel does not save jesus and we will shortly see how the roman catholic church has a false jesus and a false gospel unsound doctrine can also lead to the ruin of believers the main levels not in an eschatological sense if you are truly in christ you are safe and secure in him christ but by ingesting unsound doctrine for the believer it will cause confusion discouragement and disobedience as a christian you need to take heed be careful to the preachers that you listened to as i said a christian can is in no danger should never fear losing his or her salvation but unsound doctrine will severely limit and hinder your sanctification and growth in christ my son the true work of the holy spirit is not what we see in the charismatic movement it's not angel feathers and gold dust falling out of the sky no some angels know so uh the holy spirit of god if he is strong enough to to save us he is also strong enough to deliver us out of deception the holy spirit of god pulls his own people out of deception like that of the roman catholic church foreign a true christian will not remain in the roman catholic church we all start off as baby christians and so the only christians that you would find in the roman catholic church would be very young very immature believers but if a person truly does get converted you know as being a roman catholic peso catholic they will not remain a roman catholic permanente it may not happen overnight but they will leave a contest paul also says in verse 16 that unsound doctrine will lead to ungodliness bad doctrine always yields bad fruits and paul says that unsound doctrine spreads like gangrene it spreads like cancer apologies we as christians must have no tolerance for heresy in the roman catholic church the entire doctrinal system and its structure is that of undiluted heresy has unfortunately most evangelicals today think of the roman catholic church as just another denomination rick warren is the pastor of one of the largest churches in the united states if the southern baptist convention had a pope it would be rick warren rick warren says we have far more in common than what divides us when you talk about pentecostals charismatics evangelicals fundamentalist catholics they would all say we believe in the trinity we believe in the bible we believe in the resurrection we believe salvation and through jesus christ these are the big issues this the best way i know to describe rick warren is as a theological chameleon rick warren is whoever his audience is on that particular occasion rick warren changes his theology like we would change and he says that roman catholics agree with us as evangelicals on all of the big issues catholics i want us now to look the rest of my pres of this presentation and the one on sunday will be dealing with the roman catholic view of the five solas process of the reformation so sola gratia salvation is by grace alone island [Music] salvation is in christ alone sola deir gloria salvation is for the glory of god alone uh sola del gloria gloria sommencidada adeus and god's truth god's gospel is revealed to us in scripture alone so let's look at the first of these five solas solar gratia grace alone so i have a a chart here contrasting biblical christianity with roman catholicism biblical christianity teaches that salvation is of the lord psalm 37 verse 39 states this explicitly however the roman catholic church teaches that salvation is of the church and if you are outside of the roman catholic church then you cannot be saved biblical christianity teaches total depravity or total inability romans 3 10-11 says that there is none righteous not even one homanus there is none who seeks after god no but the roman catholic church rejects total depravity or total inability the bible teaches that we are dead in trespasses and sins we are not spiritually sick but we are spiritually dead and there is nothing within ourselves as unregenerate people that would ever want to come to the gospel is sinners of people who are unregenerate have neither the desire nor the ability to come to christ i should qualify that they have no desire no ability to come to the true christian many lost people will follow a false christ a false jesus jesus christ but not the jesus of the bible the roman catholic church however rejects total depravity they believe that we can come to god in and of our own will in and of our own merit and good work the roman catholic church also redefines grace biblical christianity the word of god teaches that grace is unmerited favor bestowed upon us by our sovereign god the roman catholic church however redefines grace the roman catholic church teaches that grace is a thing or a force merited by our good works which is obtained through the sacraments of the church [Music] you may have noticed that in the last 10 years or so the roman catholic church has begun to adopt a lot of evangelical lingo and terminology evangelical roman catholics used to never refer to themselves as christians ten plus years ago if you were to ask a roman catholic are you a christian the the catholic would have responded well i'm catholic catholic you used to never hear roman catholics talk about being saved by grace through faith in christ you used to never hear a roman catholic talk about being saved but now you do my voice they'll say oh we are saved by the grace of god so they are using some of the same lingo but they are reading into those words a very different meaning they may talk about grace but they do not mean what the bible means let's look at what the bible teaches about justification and what the roman catholic church teaches about justification justification is a divine act by which god declares a sinner to be innocent of his sins it is a judicial act of god in which the sinner is declared righteous as though he has perfectly satisfied the law of god [Music] but god demonstrates his own love to us in that while we were yet sinners christ died for us much more then having now been justified by his blood we shall be saved from the wrath of god through him [Music] god's sheep his elect are justified by the blood of christ titus three verse seven three so that having been justified by his grace we would become heirs according to the hope of eternal life the bible is crystal clear that we are justified by the grace and only the grace of god christianity but the roman catholic church rejects this i want to read to you what the council of trent adopted dealing with justification split the council of trent lasted from 1545 to 1563. this was the roman catholic church's answer to the protestant reformation as dr lawson said last night the protestant reformation turned the world upside down the power and the authority of the roman catholic church was rightly being threatened by the gospel and so they put together this council to answer the protestant reformation is 14 of the council of trent says this if anyone says that man is truly absolved from his sins and justified because he assuredly believed himself absolved and justified or that no one is truly justified but he who believes himself to be justified and that by his faith alone absolution and justification are affected let him be anathema absolutely absolutely so if you believe that you are justified solely by the grace of god through faith then you are anathema according to the roman catholic church including in other words if you believe that then you will die and go to hell. every inferno now some roman catholics today try to say oh well if an anathema doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to hell some roman catholics are trying to soften that language but i want to read to you a statement from pope zachary uh in the chapter uh chapter 11 of his work entitled well it's a greek word son latin uh pope zachary from the year 741-752 says this about anathema yeah okay but go ahead i'll find it have you got it i think so maybe it's out of place here you want to read it it's further down pope well let me just sum up so pope zachary says of those who are anathema uh we judge him condemned to eternal fire with satan and his angels and all the i reprobate i got the wrong one here that's it i got the full you you're just summarizing yeah i just read the last line okay [Music] it's the same word used in romans chapter nine verse three paul says for i could wish that i myself were accursed anathema separated from christ for the sake of my brothers my kinsmen according to the flesh when paul is paul writes in galatians 1 8-9 but even if we or an angel from heaven should proclaim to you a gospel contrary to the gospel we have proclaimed to you let him be accursed anathema as we have said before so i say again now if any man is proclaiming to you a gospel contrary to what you received let him be accursed and so the roman catholic church is clearly stating that if you believe you are justified by god's grace alone then you are anathema you will go to hell.
[Music] if anyone says that the justification received is not preserved and also increased before god through good works but that the said works are merely the fruits and signs of justification obtained but not a cause of the increase thereof let him be anathema preservatives and yet the bible teaches the exact opposite romans 11 verse 6 says this only says jesus but if it is by grace it is no longer on the basis of works since otherwise grace is no longer grace grace the roman catholic church teaches that you must earn god's grace and you must perform good works to increase your justification [Music] you've got to go to penance and confess your sins to a priest you've got to attend mass every time it's offered you've got to do this you've got to do that and that somehow earns the grace of god but dear friends that's not grace if paul says it very clearly if grace is on the basis of works it's no longer grace apologist you've completely nullified the grace of god completely so you see roman catholics may use some of the same language but they mean by those words very different things than what the bible means dear friends our good works will profit us nothing before a thrice holy isaiah 64 says that our works are as filthy rags before a thrice holy god lay your works down they cannot earn one ounce of god's grace i want us now to look at the second of the solas sola fide faith alone and i can't see the screens but i should have a chart biblical christianity on the left roman catholicism on the right solar fiedex christianism biblical christianity teaches that we are justified by faith alone imputed righteousness the bible teaches that our sins were imputed to christ when he was on the cross christ and then we must have his righteousness imputed to us we have no righteousness on our own we must have the righteousness of another. of christ and the righteousness of christ is imputed to us when god grants us faith in him in repentance from sin christ the roman catholic church teaches the opposite of this the roman catholic church doesn't deny the importance of faith importance you've got to add works to your faith this is infused righteousness infused righteousness comes when you do good works before the roman catholic church uh and we'll talk more in depth about the mass on sunday morning you know zombies then you get a shot of righteousness you get some infused righteousness but then you commit sins and that righteousness wears off so you have to go back to mass to get some more righteousness dear friends there is a difference there is a chasm as great as eternity itself between imputed righteousness and infused righteousness is imputed righteousness leads to heaven infused righteousness leads one to hell a justice imputation fungi are romans chapter 4 verse 5 says this but to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly his faith is credited as righteousness the roman catholic church rejects this you have to add to your faith through the seven sacraments of the roman catholic church sacramento de grace catholic baptism transformation penance penitencia marriage anointing the sick holy orders hazard romans chapter 3 27 through 28.
