There is a cup of tea that more than a million people drink tonight before bed without fully understanding what is happening inside their bodies while they sleep. Chamomile is the most consumed herbal tea in the world. It has been used medicinally for over 4,000 years across virtually every culture that had access to it.
And what modern science has discovered is that the reasons chamomile has persisted across 40 centuries of human medicine are not placebo and not superstition. They are specific compounds with identified mechanisms that act on the brain, the gut, the immune system, the cardiovascular system, and the metabolic pathways of the body in ways that are increasingly well documented. What I'm going to share with you today goes well beyond the folk medicine version of this story.
I'm going to take you through 10 specific research-supported benefits of regular chamomile tea consumption. And I am going to explain the mechanisms behind each one. Because understanding why something works is what allows you to use it correctly and to get the maximum benefit from it.
Stay with me because the benefit at number one on this list is the one that surprises almost every patient I share it with. And it has implications that extend far beyond what most people associate with a calming herbal tea. A study published in the journal Phytomedicine found that a specific flavonoid in chamomile demonstrated activity comparable to diazepam at certain GABA receptors in the central nervous system without the tolerance development, without the cognitive impairment, and without the dependency risk.
In adults over 60 for whom benzodiazepine medications carry documented risks of falls, cognitive decline, and dependency, that comparison is not a minor academic point. It is clinically significant information. Apigenin is the compound responsible for chamomile's most well-known neurological effects and several of its systemic anti-inflammatory effects. The second category is alpha-bisabolol, a terpenoid with documented anti-inflammatory effects on mucosal tissue, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract, as well as wound healing and antimicrobial properties. The third is chamazulene, a compound formed during the steam distillation of chamomile essential oil and present in smaller amounts in brewed tea with potent anti-inflammatory activity through COX-2 inhibition.
The same pathway targeted by many common anti-inflammatory medications. The fourth category is a range of phenolic acids, including caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, and ferulic acid, all with documented antioxidant activity. This combination of compounds, acting through different mechanisms on different systems, is why chamomile does not fit neatly into any single therapeutic category.
It is simultaneously a neurological relaxant, a gastrointestinal anti-inflammatory, a cardiovascular antioxidant, and a metabolic modulator. And those properties are not independent. They reinforce each other in the body in ways that are particularly relevant to the constellation of health challenges that accumulate after 60.

Apigenin binds to gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors in the brain, specifically to the benzodiazepine site on the GABA-A receptor complex. GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. When GABA signaling is potentiated, the excitatory activity of neurons is dampened.
The result is a reduction in the physiological and psychological components of anxiety. Heart rate slows slightly. Muscle tension decreases.
The subjective sense of mental alarm that characterizes anxiety becomes quieter. This is the same receptor site that benzodiazepine medications bind to. The difference is that apigenin is a partial agonist at this site rather than a full agonist.
It produces a gentler, more natural feeling modulation of GABA signaling without the sedation, the cognitive impairment, and the dependency that come with pharmaceutical benzodiazepines. A randomized controlled trial published in Phytomedicine found that chamomile extract supplementation produced a statistically significant reduction in generalized anxiety disorder severity scores over an 8-week period compared to placebo. A follow-up study by the same research group found that continued chamomile supplementation after the initial treatment period reduced the rate of anxiety relapse compared to discontinuation.
For adults over 60 managing anxiety, this mechanism deserves attention. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health challenge in older adults, affecting approximately 15% of individuals over 65, and they are frequently under-treated precisely because the available pharmaceutical options carry unacceptable risk profiles in this population. Chamomile represents a documented, safe, and accessible alternative that is operating through a genuine neurochemical mechanism, not through placebo effect.
Benefit number nine. Improvement of sleep onset and sleep quality. Chamomile has been used as a sleep aid for thousands of years.
What modern research has clarified is the mechanism by which it works and the profile of sleep improvement it produces, which is distinct from pharmaceutical sleep aids in important ways. The GABA receptor modulation I described does not produce sedation at the doses delivered through a standard cup of chamomile tea. What it does produce is a reduction in the physiological activation that delays sleep onset.
The anxiety, muscle tension, and mental hyperactivation that prevent many older adults from falling asleep within a reasonable time are all driven partly by excessive excitatory neural signaling. By gently potentiating GABA, chamomile quiets that signaling and makes the transition from wakefulness to sleep smoother. A study published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing found that new mothers who drank chamomile tea daily for 2 weeks had significantly better sleep quality and fewer depressive symptoms compared to a control group.
A study specifically in older adults, published in Complementary Therapies in Medicine, found that chamomile extract capsules improved sleep quality, shortened sleep onset latency, and reduced nighttime waking frequency compared to placebo over 4 weeks. The effect was modest in absolute terms, but consistent and statistically significant. The critical advantage for older adults is that chamomile does not suppress REM sleep the way most pharmaceutical sleep aids do.
REM sleep is the stage during which memory consolidation occurs, emotional processing happens, and the glymphatic system, which is the brain's overnight waste clearance system, does much of its work. Medications that suppress REM sleep to achieve sedation are trading one problem for another. Chamomile works upstream of that trade-off.
Benefit number eight. Anti-inflammatory effects in the gastrointestinal tract. Alpha-bisabolol, one of chamomile's primary terpenoid compounds, has specific anti-inflammatory activity in the mucosal lining of the gastrointestinal tract.
When you drink chamomile tea, the compounds come into direct contact with the epithelial cells lining the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine before being absorbed into the circulation. This direct contact delivers a local anti-inflammatory effect to tissue that in many older adults is chronically irritated. The gastrointestinal mucosa is among the most metabolically active tissue in the body with complete cellular turnover approximately every 4 to 7 days.
It is also heavily innervated and closely connected to the enteric nervous system. Chronic low-grade inflammation in the gut lining contributes to symptoms including bloating, cramping, irregular bowel habits, and what many patients describe as a general digestive fragility that seems to have developed with age. Research published in Molecular Medicine Reports documented chamomile extract's inhibition of Helicobacter pylori, the bacteria responsible for the majority of gastric ulcers.
Research in the European Journal of Gastroenterology confirmed anti-inflammatory activity in intestinal mucosal tissue comparable to some pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory preparations for specific digestive conditions. For adults managing irritable bowel symptoms, inflammatory bowel disease in remission, or general digestive sensitivity, chamomile tea consumed before meals represents a low-risk, evidence-grounded intervention. Before I continue to the next benefit, I want to share something about one of my patients that I think will ground this in practical reality.
Eleanor was 73 years old, a retired librarian who had managed what her gastroenterologist called irritable bowel syndrome for over a decade. She was on a restricted diet, had eliminated multiple food groups at various points in attempts to manage her symptoms, and described her relationship with food as a source of ongoing anxiety rather than pleasure. She came to me after reading about natural approaches and wanting to understand what, if anything, was based in real science.
Among several recommendations I made, I suggested she drink two cups of chamomile tea daily, one before lunch and one before dinner for 8 weeks. This is the benefit that generates the most surprise when I present it because most people think of chamomile exclusively in terms of relaxation and sleep. But there is a growing body of research suggesting that chamomile has meaningful activity on glucose metabolism.
A study published in the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation found that diabetic patients who consumed chamomile tea daily for 8 weeks showed significant reductions in fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, and insulin resistance markers compared to a control group. The mechanisms proposed include inhibition of alpha-glucosidase and aldose reductase, two enzymes involved in glucose processing, as well as antioxidant protection of pancreatic beta cells, which are the insulin-producing cells that are progressively damaged by chronic hyperglycemia. For the estimated 30% of adults over 65 who have diagnosed or undiagnosed impaired glucose metabolism, these mechanisms are not trivial.
Pancreatic beta cell preservation is one of the most important and least addressed aspects of diabetes management, because the progressive loss of beta cell function is what converts prediabetes into diabetes and what makes diabetes increasingly difficult to control over time. The polyphenols in chamomile, particularly apigenin and the phenolic acids I mentioned, have documented activity on several cardiovascular risk pathways. Apigenin has been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation, which is one of the steps in arterial thrombus formation. It has also demonstrated activity against the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which is the transformation of LDL particles into the form that contributes to atherosclerotic plaque formation.
A study published in the European Journal of Nutrition found that regular consumption of chamomile tea was associated with lower plasma levels of oxidized LDL in older adults compared to non-consumers after controlling for other dietary and lifestyle variables. The anti-inflammatory activity through NFKB inhibition that I described in the context of rosmarinic acid in a previous video is also documented for apigenin. Apigenin is in fact one of the more potent NFKB inhibitors among the commonly consumed dietary flavonoids for adults over 60 who are managing cardiovascular risk.
Chamomile represents a dietary addition that is addressing several of the same upstream mechanisms as pharmaceutical interventions at lower potency, but with essentially no adverse effect profile at standard consumption levels. A study published in Bone found that apigenin stimulated the activity of osteoblasts, which are the cells responsible for building new bone, while inhibiting the activity of osteoclasts, which are the cells responsible for bone resorption. The net effect is a shift in the balance of bone turnover in the direction of net bone formation. The magnitude of the effect in the cell culture and animal models used in that research was clinically meaningful.
Phytoestrogens in chamomile have also been proposed as a contributing mechanism. Because estrogen plays a major role in maintaining bone density, and its decline after menopause accelerates bone loss. Chamomile's mild phytoestrogenic activity may partially buffer this effect.
The clinical evidence in human populations is still developing, but the mechanistic rationale is solid enough that chamomile represents a rational dietary inclusion for postmenopausal women concerned about bone health. Benefit number four. Immunomodulation and infection resistance.
The antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties of chamomile have been documented in multiple research contexts. Alpha-bisabolol has demonstrated direct antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and several Bacillus species. Apigenin has documented antiviral activity in cell culture studies against several respiratory viruses.
And chamomile's overall anti-inflammatory activity means that it may help prevent the kind of chronic low-grade immune activation that paradoxically suppresses appropriate immune responses to acute infections. In older adults, a phenomenon called immunosenescence, meaning the progressive deterioration of immune function with age, reduces resistance to both infections and cancer immunosurveillance. The simultaneous chronic inflammation of aging, sometimes called inflammaging, further compromises immune function through a different mechanism.
Chamomile's activity at both ends of this paradox, reducing chronic inflammation while supporting antimicrobial defenses positions it well as a dietary tool for immune support in the aging population. Benefit number three, skin health through topical and systemic anti-inflammatory mechanisms. Chamomile has been used topically for skin conditions for centuries and the evidence for this application is among the strongest in the herbal medicine literature.
Alpha-bisabolol is a primary ingredient in many commercial skin care formulations specifically because of its documented anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties in dermal tissue. Chamazulene, the blue-tinted compound in chamomile essential oil, has anti-inflammatory activity through COX-2 inhibition that is particularly relevant for conditions including contact dermatitis, eczema, and rosacea. What is less appreciated is that regular oral consumption of chamomile tea delivers these anti-inflammatory compounds systemically where they circulate through the blood and reach the skin from the inside.
Skin inflammation in older adults is driven by the same NF-κB-mediated inflammatory pathways that drive vascular inflammation. Apigenin's documented NF-κB inhibitory activity means that drinking chamomile tea may be contributing to skin health through the same mechanism as drinking it contributes to cardiovascular health by reducing the systemic inflammatory milieu in which skin aging and skin disease occur. Benefit number two, anti-cancer mechanisms through apigenin's activity on cellular proliferation.
I want to address this benefit with precision about what the evidence does and does not show because it is an area where the research is genuinely exciting, but where over claiming would be both inaccurate and irresponsible. Apigenin has demonstrated anti-proliferative activity against multiple cancer cell lines in laboratory studies, including breast, colorectal, thyroid, and prostate cancer cell lines. The mechanisms identified include induction of apoptosis in cancer cells, inhibition of cell cycle progression at the G2/M checkpoint, inhibition of angiogenesis, which is the formation of new blood vessels that tumors require for growth, and modulation of specific oncogenic signaling pathways.
A review published in the journal Cancer Letters summarized the preclinical evidence as compelling and noted that apigenin's favorable safety profile makes it a strong candidate for further clinical investigation. What the evidence does not yet show is that drinking chamomile tea prevents cancer in humans. That claim would require clinical trial evidence that does not currently exist.
What the evidence does show is that apigenin, the primary flavonoid in chamomile, disrupts the cellular processes that allow cancer cells to survive and proliferate through mechanisms that are biologically plausible and well documented at the cellular level. Whether consistent dietary exposure to apigenin through chamomile tea translates into measurable cancer risk reduction in human populations is a question that ongoing research is beginning to address. And we arrive at benefit number one, the one I mentioned at the beginning, the one that may be most immediately relevant to the most people in this audience, and that most completely reframes how chamomile should be thought about after 60.
Benefit number one, neuroprotection and cognitive aging. Apigenin has demonstrated specific neuroprotective activity that is generating significant research interest in the context of Alzheimer's disease and cognitive aging. A study published in Aging Cell found that apigenin promoted the differentiation of human neural stem cells into neurons and the formation of long and elaborate neurite networks, which are the connections between neurons that underlie cognitive function.
This was a direct cellular level demonstration that apigenin promotes the growth and interconnection of brain cells in ways that are relevant to cognitive health. A separate line of research has documented apigenin's activity against the aggregation of amyloid beta protein, which is the primary pathological protein implicated in Alzheimer's disease. Apigenin reduced amyloid beta aggregation and associated neuroinflammation in multiple preclinical models.
The neuroinflammatory mechanism is particularly important because neuroinflammation is increasingly recognized as both a consequence and a driver of cognitive decline in aging. NF-κB mediated inflammation in brain tissue, which apigenin inhibits, is a central mechanism in microglial activation, which is the process by which the brain's immune cells shift from protective to destructive activity in neurodegenerative conditions. For adults over 60 who are aware of their risk for cognitive decline, the convergence of apigenin's neurotropic activity, its neuroprotective activity against amyloid pathology, and its anti-neuroinflammatory effects through documented mechanisms represents something worth taking seriously.
The evidence does not yet support the claim that drinking chamomile tea prevents Alzheimer's disease, but the mechanisms by which apigenin acts on the cellular processes of cognitive aging are real. They are well documented and they are operating every time you consume a well-prepared cup of chamomile. Now, let me address the practical question of how to get the maximum benefit from chamomile because preparation and frequency are the variables that determine the difference between therapeutic exposure and negligible exposure.
Chamomile tea from a quality source steeped in water just below boiling at approximately 85° C for 8 to 10 minutes with the cup covered during steeping to prevent the volatile compounds from escaping with the steam produces an extract with meaningful concentrations of apigenin, alpha-bisabolol, and the phenolic acid compounds. Under steeping, using water that has cooled below 80°, or leaving the cup uncovered during steeping, all significantly reduce compound extraction. Two cups daily, one in the late afternoon and one in the evening, provides consistent systemic exposure to the compounds I have described.
Consistency over weeks is necessary for the anti-inflammatory and metabolic effects to accumulate to measurable levels. The acute sleep and anxiety effects are perceptible earlier, often within the first week of consistent use. Choose whole flower chamomile or high-quality tea bags from producers who specify the source.
German chamomile, Matricaria chamomilla, has a stronger research base than Roman chamomile, Chamomellum nobile, for most of the benefits I have described, and the two are sometimes sold interchangeably despite being different plants. For adults on blood-thinning medications, chamomile's mild antiplatelet activity warrants a mention to your physician before significantly increasing consumption. For most other adults, chamomile at the doses I have described has an essentially benign safety profile that has been established across 4,000 years of documented human use and confirmed in modern pharmacological analysis.
So, we have covered 10 specific research-supported benefits of regular chamomile tea consumption. Anxiety reduction through GABA receptor modulation. Sleep improvement without REM suppression.
Gastrointestinal anti-inflammatory effects at the mucosal level. Blood glucose regulation and beta cell protection. Cardiovascular antioxidant and anti-inflammatory protection.
