Why aren't there so many young people sailing? In reality, in sports sailing there are many young people sailing. But in cruising sailing, not so much.
One of the barriers is certainly that buying a Cruise boat is not easy. I think it's easier than most people imagine. But not It's a toy and costs roughly between the price of a car and a house.
And if it's hard for the majority, even more so when this majority is starting their professional lives. Of any Anyway, it is not necessary to own a boat to start sailing. There are several other opportunities.
But I think it's not just that. What can I say, having once been a young man and being a sailor who has lived on board for seven years, is that if I had known what this was like when I had it, I don't know, about 20 years ago, I would have taken a different path in life. Something I didn't even dream of at the time.
And there is Yes, older and smaller boats that many young people could buy. Today I will talk with a sailor who not only has the experience of having lived on board for two years, but also He crossed the Atlantic and has experience with several other really cool crossings. Today she works as a skipper, piloting and transporting sailboats, and is a person who represents very well this new generation of sailors.
And I say new generation in a broad sense, not just because of age, but those women who recently started sailing. Some of them already make a living from sailing and in In a short time they acquired a very cool experience. Tell me where are you now?
It's in Ubatuba? Now I'm in Ubatuba, I'm getting ready there, organizing things, because I'm leaving on Saturday, huh? I'm going by plane to Italy and there I'm going to get a boat and bring it to Brazil.
So I'm going I'm working on a crossing now. And are you living on your boat in Ubatuba? Now I'm in land, but I brought Corumi here to Saco da Ribeira.
It's been about two weeks or so since I stopped living on the boat and came to live on land. So I made this transition after two years living on board, I came to live on land for a bit to realign my life, I think I needed it. It's important for me to have a base, right?
So much for organizing my things, leaving things behind Corumi too, because I took everything off, the boat is naked. Going through the internal renovation, everything is fine in a house now. But now that things are starting to line up financially, structurally, I chose this.
And the idea is to go back to live there or are you going to stay on land? In fact, this boat I have a partnership with Fábio, who is a great friend. Finishing the renovation, he takes over.
Thinking about us future projects, in the boats I want to have, in my dreams, I think it makes sense now also end this cycle with Corumi. I met you on a diving course there with the Uncle Spinelli and I remember that at the time you were, or I don't know if you still are, I don't know, from the area of investment. You came from this world, you are super young, right?
But you were already working with that and such. And then suddenly, wow, you're a sailboat skipper, you lived on a sailboat. It's a bit caricatured, isn't it?
Is it true that these two things cannot go at the same time? They can. I have the impression, and I Correct if I'm wrong, there's been a break in how to observe life, in goals.
Explain to me How was that? I started working very young, since I was 15 years old I have always worked. My family is from the countryside, I've ridden horses my whole life, I was from the countryside.
I'm a country bumpkin red. And when I was choosing a college, I remember that oceanography was at the top of my mind. list of courses.
Then I said, wow, I'm going to have to live at sea, I don't want to, I don't want to. I ended up giving up. And then I did it administration, which I thought, no, because I'm going to become an entrepreneur.
And it ended up that I did the administration and In my second semester of college, I started interning in the banking market, right? And then right away Then I went to an investment analysis company, until the pandemic came, right? I think that The pandemic was divisive for many people, that's a fact.
I was cloistered in São Paulo, so I was afraid of visit my parents and give them some illness. I started working sometimes at 4 o'clock in the morning, because I had insomnia, and this at 24 years old, like, having crises, fear. Beginning of burnout, diagnosed by a professional and everything else.
And then a friend who has a house on the beach, here in Ubatuba, said, oh, Theo, come here, because we're going surf, and then we can enjoy something, at least you won't feel so bad. I said, no, if I go, I'll go with the purpose of learning to surf. Since then, I didn't stop, I didn't stop, until I started to realize, like, no, São Paulo is not the financial market for me, I really like what I do, but I started to understand that, man, there’s not just that, you know?
Until Fábio, who is Corumi's friend, turned to me and said, Theo, why don't you go sailing? That's very like you. What do you mean sailing, Fábio?
This isn't for me, it's inaccessible. Imagine, my family has never, no one in my family has ever set foot on a sailboat, nothing like that. He, no, it will, it will be cool, you will like it.
Take a course with this one, you have to meet this gentleman here, Uncle Spinelli, he's cool. How cool, you fell in with your uncle, right? How lucky, how cool.
Then I went to take the course with Uncle Spinelli, in 2021, I think, it's, 2021, February 2021. I hit snooze and said, that's it, that's it, I want to learn now, uncle, I already want to go to Africa, how do I do that? And then the super uncle, too, we got along really well, so it was a meeting, So, a very interesting friendship, right?
Because it's a generational difference, it's absurd, but, like, the uncle is my best friend today, the most special person I have today besides my family. This happened, right, that I took the courses with my uncle, But, okay, I don't have a boat, how am I going to practice? And then I started running regattas, and then I started running regattas on a third party boat, until there was a Santos-Rio that I raced, I got financial support from the boat owner, I said, wow, but he's paying me to be here, doing something I want for fun, and I'm not even that good, you know?
And he is paying me, covering my costs, and when he arrived the day before the crossing, I asked for an unpaid period to be able to cross, right? I still worked from home in the financial market, but they were already feeling, too, that I was very disjointed, so, shall we finish, Teodora? And I, damn, let's go, right, ok, and that's it, but I finished with butterflies in my stomach, Because, man, I'm going on a journey where I don't know how many days I'll be back unemployed, right?
Never in my life have I been unemployed, ever, and. . .
What a moment of transition, like, right, like, absurd, right? What helped me a lot is that I went to the crossing with my uncle, but I had made a reservation, I had a micro reservation of the years I've been working, right? So, I've always been a big fan of saving money, and then I thought, well, I'll organize myself and start looking for a new job, and until that happens, I'm keeping that reserve a little bit.
A lot of people say, oh, man, and it's true, like, can you work from a boat when you live on a sailboat? It does, right, like that, but often you don't want it anymore, you want to do something else. I say that, well, it's a phrase that I've heard from other sailors too, but that the crossing, it crosses us, and.
. . The truth is that the candle becomes a means, but the process that happens there is revolutionary, it is very internal, you know?
And sometimes there are people who say, oh, but not the majority who. . .
No, not the majority who will do that, but many people, more than in the past, are leaving their careers, it's not that they have stopped working, quite the opposite, but people sometimes put money as the ultimate goal, like, you know? Like, oh, the point of life is to make money. No, money is one thing for you to do other things with.
People have chosen a different career with this new reasoning, like that. I completely agree, but this way, I know that I arrived at the crossing and the opportunities began to appear in a very organic way, And that's when I understood and it became a key that, like, there are other ways of making money, you know? And maybe I won't earn much, or even what I earned before, now, or maybe even in the future, In 10 years working in this area, maybe I won't earn much, but everything I'm experiencing, you know?
The people I'm connecting with, I think that today I work with people's happiness, That's not always happy, right? You know that, that a boat is not just flowers, you can't romanticize it, And you also can't romanticize the idea of, oh, I'm going to drop everything and live off this. Not like that.
I had this little reserve that allowed me to make this transition, but I think it's also necessary to make such a drastic change, because the sea is no joke. Teodora is part of a series of sailors with a lot of determination and who have more experience in sailing than many sailors who consider themselves experienced. I met women like this in various parts of Brazil, but there in Urbatuba, where she started to have a very strong group.
This story that sailing is a boy's game, we're past that stage, right? It's not that we didn't have incredible examples in sailing, and there are several, I won't mention them here because otherwise I'm going to be unfair to a lot of people, because there are several examples, but I have the impression that sailing today is a little more feminine, and that's a wonderful thing. Well, it's normal for people to become interested in sailing later on.
Of course, it's also more difficult to buy a sailboat sooner, otherwise you won't accumulate so many things in life, I don't know, right? Wow, you liked this super early, tell me what it's like and what it's like for other people who, I don't know, college friends, things like that, who are in the same generation as you, and see this, what do they think? In general, all my friends really like it, admire it a lot, but I have my friends from school, from school, who are a little more pragmatic, so one is a lawyer, the other is a physiotherapist, biology, like, everyone follows a very strengthened academic career there, right?
These days I was talking about a situation on a boat, what happened, and then they capsized, You know you're almost 30 years old, right? You're not worrying about having a family, You're not worrying about buying a house, you need to grow, it's urgent. It stopped, you know?
What world are you living in? Because that, for me, is another vision, right? And then I went to talk to my mother, because my mother is my biggest supporter, So I went to say, mom, what do you think of her?
Enjoy, life is passing, time is passing, Enjoy it while you can, like this. Yeah, I don't know, so, it's clear that there are professions that perhaps at certain moments in history are more guaranteed, none are, but like, there's a better chance of you having an ok life or not, It's obvious, right? But, man, these professions, so, very confirmed and traditionally, like, these are good professions, right, but lawyer, doctor, like that, it's not a little thing that you turn around, thus, 100% for one side and zero for the other.
I know a lot of people in Nautica who are making a living and living well, and sometimes not making as much money, but spending less than, like, sometimes having such a career, for example, being an advertising film director, You make money, but you spend a lot of money too. I agree, I agree, I say that when I worked in the financial market, I bought one shoe a month, one high heel shoe a month, and it wasn't even because I liked it, It was because I needed to look that way, but today I've had the same Havaiana for years, Havaiana is here almost falling apart, I don't buy a shoe, I don't know what it means to buy a shoe, I went to put on sneakers these days and the sneakers squeezed my foot, because I walk so much barefoot and in flip-flops, I think my foot has even widened a little, you know? I find it very funny that a group that has in its storytelling, in its vision of itself, the image that strives for efficiency, for reason, has the habit of wearing such inefficient clothes, especially in the heat of Brazil.
Did anyone stop to calculate the cost of air conditioning? and also the amount of money that employees need to earn to buy clothes? But any other group in society has its rituals, and there is nothing special or wrong with them.
in this, but it seems to me to make it somewhat obvious that beneath a veneer of extreme rationality, an enormous symbolism, more than those who work in the field would perhaps like to assume. A suit isn't very different in that sense from an indigenous person's necklace or something like that, If you mess around, it's even less functional. Okay, and if you say that, Oh, is it because it inspires confidence?
Exactly what I'm saying, it is something exactly symbolic, abstract and not at all objective. It is good too. When I told him that I was giving up a solid career, a prosperous career, to move to something completely uncertain, becoming self-employed, a job that requires physical effort, he was completely against it.
Because he has a life story that comes a lot from that. He's very young, almost my age too. He had a very promising career in a multinational company and he gave up everything to undertake and broke a lot of face, right?
So, I think that was marked in his life. And we didn't speak to each other for a few months. And then, out of nowhere, one day I receive an audio from three minutes of it.
Then I, wow, what happened, right? My father sending me the audio, him talking to me. And the audio of him talking, it's my daughter, I was reflecting here, sorry to have been against, if in fact I created you to be free and now I'm here wanting to cut off your wings, it doesn't make sense.
I really believe you're right, because today I'm here with I'm 60 years old and I'm sick, I can't enjoy it. So there was no point in working and worrying all this time, disappointing myself with people who don't care about reaching out now and I can't enjoy it simply because I'm sick. And time I won't be able to buy, the time I won't be able to return.
And you're enjoying the time. Besides everything, you are living and enjoying. If perhaps you left this to live in the future, you wouldn't live.
Then Enjoy and I'm here and I'll support you. This validation, this endorsement from him was special. How difficult is it to be a young woman, you know, among so many older people and generally men, to have achieved the confidence you have today?
You have to invest initially, it’s not possible, Just like other professions, you have to try to make connections with people who can sign there How beautiful, you accomplished this task. People who validate you, in my case I had my uncle. When I started as a woman, it was very interesting, one of my first clients was a woman, Carla, who bought a boat and started sailing at the age of 60, she started sailing at 60 years old, served me a lot of encouragement.
I think that because I had this experience with my uncle, I had a little easier time gaining initial respect here from the Ubatuba community. Then the sailors started to see me differently because they understand what I went through, They understand what it's like to participate in this journey, they know their uncle too. I thought it would be woman would be a problem, until a person you actually know, who is Otton from Flip Boat, we were talking and he said, Théo, did you know that there is a great advantage of being woman?
For people who are family men, have a wife, it's great to have a woman on board, they feel much more comfortable that their wives can enjoy wearing bikinis, When you can talk, women look at you and look up to you too. I really like to be serious like this, even sometimes I try to manage it because navigation, for me, I'm very caxias. On a weekend, which is not a crossing, we can relax for a while little bit, you don't need to be as cachias as on an expedition, on a more serious crossing, on a bad weather day.
If you sail on the weekend, you will bring someone who never sailed, to have a barbecue and dive, just like you sail in a regatta, man, you will drive everyone crazy. You'll drive everyone crazy. And I went crazy some people, because I was like that a lot, and that responsibility, right, because you are in command of the boat, anything that happens there, someone breaks a finger, man, it's your responsibility.
Then, I always took it very seriously. I think taking it seriously is where it made my clients respected me, even though I was young and even though I was a woman, right. Because there is a paradox that, Sometimes people get upset because they don't understand this.
Almost a mantra, which I said several times Sometimes, I try not to repeat so much, because I've already said so much here. We have a lot of freedom big on a sailboat, but the more freedom you have, in general, this freedom, it charges It’s a huge responsibility, right, that you have to do on your own. It is wonderful, but it also requires you to think further ahead, like this.
You will have the best experiences in life risks, that's the truth. This is whether on the boat or off it. You go on a trail, you go on a waterfall, there is risk.
If you go and learn to surf, there is a risk, it is dangerous. What do you want to do, he knows? Yes, and having a completely risk-free life is an absurd risk, it is almost certain that you will have a very boring life.
It could be that in the end, there, man, you lived very little. Total. So, like, look, you live in an apartment, have a job, CLT, there, it's like putting the money in the CBD, it's about putting happiness in the CBD.
It's already there with income tax, right, I don't think it even pays, right? I don't think so does CBD. Today, I think it looks like a savings.
Then, like, and you keep going around in the world crazy, then, like, it's, like, buying shares in NVIDIA, Tesla,. . .
No, it's crazy. It's action, it's crypto, it's NFT, it's everything. There's a lot to gain, but you also have to be careful.
Also have There's a lot to lose, then, is managing risks. The discomfort, for those who don't know anything and are Listening to us, it's obvious, but what do you gain? I think the feeling of really living, the feeling of belonging to the planet.
Today, I feel like I belong to planet Earth, you know? I I feel like I belong to the sea and every day, every day, I unlock an ability that I didn't even know I had. I was capable, you know?
I think this, for me, is very important. When you go live aboard, the boat turns you into a functional adult, because you have to know everything. You have I had to learn risk management and I think that's why I felt so comfortable, too, to start this career.
I learned to work with fiber, wood, do electrical work. Never had changed a shower in my house. Learning to look at the forecast, do meteorology, for me, It's a very incredible, very special thing.
You learn to observe time, you know? I remember that, When I worked at the office, sometimes it rained, it was sunny, there were rainbows and I I hadn't even seen it. Like, there was a lot of water falling outside, I hadn't even seen it.
And the time I was going although, I said, wow, did it rain? You feel like you belong to nature, you know? You feel belonging to the universe and free.
It's not a situation, like, oh, I do what I want and whatever comes your way. No, but it is capacity. Like, it's possible.
What were the longest crossings? cool moments or moments you remember? You have a lot of amazing diving photos, you have a lot So, moments that seem to have been really cool for you and that, on your Instagram, inspire, with I'm sure other people want to try this, right?
I don't know if as intensely as you, some yes. I really like sharing these images and photos for that very reason, he knows? I think people don't need to live so intensely, but I would like them to at least once in their lives, they could see it with their own eyes, you know?
It doesn't have to be every day just like I have done. You don't have to change your whole life. Once in your life you can see, because, people, is very beautiful.
The sea is very beautiful. But my most special crossing of all, without a doubt, went from Paraty to Ubatuba, here in the backyard, bringing Corumi after the hull renovation from him. It's really crazy because we think, oh, the most important crossing.
Do you imagine a return to the world, a trip to the poles, something like that. But, in fact, my most important and What was more special was a crossing of just a few miles, here in our backyard. So it made me cry.
No You can't think about it and not cry. So, it was special. This, certainly, without a doubt, the most important crossing of my life.
Everyone looks at something in a different way, with a different lens, which is based on everything you've been through, that you've carried, right? This trip from Corumi has a whole story about the difficulties you went through, of things like that, which gave a filter there that, for someone else who didn't experience it, it would have been a legal crossing or not, but for you were everything. It was a unique moment, you know?
So, I think that also one of the advantages of having a Life like this is because we are able to value things that, for others, would be commonplace. We can live much better with them. You had a very difficult moment, right?
Which was the reason, perhaps, that this crossing was very cool. And do you want to tell me about her? How was it?
For those who don't know, I lived on board the Corumi, which is a Fast 310, and I always stayed in Ubatuba and then I spent a season in Paraty, and then I started working a lot, then I stayed, I stayed, and I got, like, always I stayed at the anchor there, and then there was a period when I got a slightly better job and then I managed to grow in it, and then in this job they provided me with a stay at the Marina. That's where I chose to leave the boat on a pier for the first time. A storm came and caught everyone really surprising, many boats that day were damaged, and I was on board because when I saw the cloud arriving, I said, oh, I'm going to go to the boat and wait for the cloud to pass, and then I went to Corumi, That's when the storm came, the cloud came, and everything happened.
I tried to save the boat from all shapes, but it happened that it exploded at the bow, it came loose, and we kept hitting it, right, against the pier, until it opened a very large hole in the hull, right, at the stern. We're done sinking, we sank, like, three meters, I almost sank with the boat, because trying save things, you know, I went down to try to save what I could, there was a time when I got stuck, I went trying to climb back up the ladder, I couldn't, and then suddenly I jumped onto the pier, the moment I managed leaving, I jumped onto the pier, the moment I jumped onto the pier there was a bit of an air bubble and the boat went with everything, like, and then I looked and I was like, man, it was seconds, like, it was seconds, so it was my house, my things personal items, clothes, toothbrush, everything was in it, my work, because I went out with Corumi, I did ride, there was the sailing one, so losing it, seeing your house going to the bottom, is quite shocking, So, when everything happened, the nautical community embraced me in a way that I didn't. expected, the people I knew and people I never, who to this day I have never met, who I have never I saw, which I may never see, I think, without a doubt, if I managed to lift that boat it was because I I had people strengthening portals.
Luiz, who is the manager of Marina do Engenho, and he is all serious, right? He's all, like, polite, with everyone, like, tough, and then he came and said, why are you crying? Then I looked, like, there he, come on, come on, come on, go, get up, then I looked, like that, crying, his tears, So where are we going?
Get this boat out of the water, so I, Luíz, need to see how I'm going to do it, I don't have any money him, am I asking you for money? Then Uncle Spinelli also came, moving groups and groups, Fernanda do Talismã sailboat, I had a visit from you which, for me, was a turning point there, because we had a kitty going on and, man, after that, just a few minutes, there, of your conversation with me, the kitty changed like that doubled, you know? So, a lot of things happened because of these people, everyone, you know?
Everyone, My desire is to be able, one day, to welcome everyone on board and sail with everyone on board and be able to give a hug in each one. You know, I received a lot more help in life than I was able to give, you know, but I always when I help someone and then I ask myself, wow, how can I repay them? I say, man, move on, because I think the world is better this way.
I helped you, you helped others and, thus, we close the circle. Without a doubt, going back to work also helped me regain that confidence, my first client after shipwreck was a shareholder in Flipboat, I will never forget it. Like, I got on board and I was still very tense, Man, the people were super trusting and really hugging me, you know, welcoming me.
So, having people in our life That they believe and that they are with us is fundamental for anything. Support network is everything. How would you say that life, the two years you lived on board, all these crossings, changed you?
I think that, actually, coming to the sea didn't change me, coming to the sea rescued me, because, as I said at the beginning, I was from a farm, I rode horses, I always had a very strong connection with nature. I was raised with chickens, I had a pet cow, so, when I went to São Paulo, you know, study, go to college, I just went to São Paulo because I won a university scholarship and then everything went well, I said, no, this is it and I'm going to make a lot of money and I'm going to have my horses again. It was essential to have gone to São Paulo to study, I'm not trying to say that, oh, I don't speak badly about the capital markets, because I still like it today, I love it, but I feel like when I went there I lost my essence.
So I stopped being that simple person, I stopped being that person who looked at nature, who looked at the tree and analyzed, like, how is the flower looking, how is it not. And then, when I come to the sea, I feel a rescue, so it's a rescue of who I am, of who I like to be, a real freedom of expression, of being able to be who I really am, to go after what I believe. I think in the end, Adriano, my invitation is for people to get to know you, you know?
I think no one needs to live the life we lead, no one needs to be radicalized, but at least they know, you know? I have friends who are super sailors, but who like sailing in Guarapiranga and that works for them, you know? But they met, they had this opportunity, so today my invitation is for people to at least get to know you, you know?
Because I didn't realize I loved boats like I do, you know? I didn't imagine that I would feel so comfortable diving deep, doing an apnea session, how I like it, how I love it and how I have this ability, I didn't know I was capable of it. Being able to experience it is the most important thing.
Sometimes we look for the right things in the wrong places. Does the search for financial freedom, which one day you may or may not achieve, Won't it take away many other freedoms and dreams that were possible and you let pass by? And after you finally reach that pot at the end of the rainbow, if at all, How long will you enjoy this very specific freedom?
We often look for strength in the greatest, the most powerful, when in fact the true strength lies elsewhere, not in musculature, but in determination, in the ability to take a fall and move forward, even with the pain, even with scraped knees and a face covered in dust or salt water, sweat and crying. Other times we think that now we have found freedom, but it was just independence. Freedom is another thing.
Be careful, because I often look for intelligence, I found it, but I ended up breaking my face, because what was actually missing was wisdom. I'm really glad you watched this far, I hope you enjoyed the episode, See you next Sunday at 10 am, or in the Telegram group if you are a supporter, and if you haven't gone yet, think carefully and leave anything there at Aia-se, In this link that appears here in the description, it helps us a lot to do what we do here, okay?
