a coin was dropped into the slot and it fell onto a tray attached to a lever the weight of the coin pushed the lever down which opened a valve this valve let out a small amount of holy water once the coin slid off the tray the lever lifted back up closing the valve and stopping the water from flowing this stopped people from taking too much holy water at once making sure everyone got their fair share
